Bought some Verbatim Dual Layer media. My NEC ND-6500A drive doesn't seem to have a problem with it.
I tried to to simulate a data burn on one of the disks but Nero said I cannot do that. Wasn't about to waste a whole disk on some test burn for those prices.
So I have to find a movie I like to make a copy of it that's larger than the 4.7 GB of a regular single layer disk. -

I'm sorry. I misspoke. I have an AMD 3000 and want to upgrade to 3700+ 754 socket. Is that doable?

You can remove anything and everything you will not use.
My problem was caused by my not rebooting after each major removal, the computer apparently got confused. System Restore got it back running easily.

Hello guys, I was just wanted to check with you guy 1st, if anyone here is using the preview of window xp professional 64? I just want to know if xp 64 is working pretty good or it crash your system, before i download this demo. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/upgrade.mspx

jnmigr...
I am using windows XP64. I had a little problem finding drivers for the video but after modding the INF file I got the Nvidia XP 64 drivers 66.96 to load with no problems(yet). The only drivers I have not found a 64 bit version of are the PCI modem drivers and the "base system device" drivers. I am guessing that the "base system device" is the sound controls on the front of the notebook and/or the HP proprietary connector on the left side which I have yet to test. Everything else is working including the wireless card as I am comfortably resting on my couch as I type this [].
If you have any questions about setting it up feel free to ask...I frequently browse this thread.

jnmigr,
I am assuming that the driver that you are asking me about in the first line is the video driver. Most notebooks, while using the GPU from a major manufacturer (ATI, Nvidia),have proprietary changes that are made to the installation of the chip when installing them into the notebook. Because of this, they have a certain identifying code integrated into the chip when they are installed. In the INF file (that the setup.exe file uses when installing the driver) there are a list of codes that identify which chips the driver will work with. The setup.exe file looks at that list and if your card is not listed there then the setup file will not install the drivers. I simply copied the device code from the inf file of the HP driver installation from the 32bit install folder to the inf file in the 64bit install folder and the setup.exe file installed the 64bit drivers. So far they are working just fine.
The Broadcom drivers I found on a website and I cannot remember where exactly but if you need a copy of them let me know and I will email them to you. I thought that they had automatically loaded with the OS install but I realized later that I had my pen drive in the USB slot that had the drivers on it and windows might have searched there when starting up.
I do believe that the "base system device" is the HP proprietary expansion slot on the (err...right side) of the machine. I have an expansion module at my work that I could use to test the slot to see if it is functional at all. Until that point I can only assume that the "base system device" refers to that slot. Maybe someone else can helpout here...
The sound controls on the front of the machine work fine....no driver needed. I incorrectly stated that they did not work in my previous post.
Although there may be drivers for the modem, I have not bothered to look for them because I never use it.
If you want to try installing XP64 just to fool around with it you could either partition your hard drive and install it to one of the partitions or you could try an external drive. You may even be able to install it to a 1gig USB drive. Have not tried this yet but I have read a few articles about people carrying there OS's around on USB drives.
I have found that XP64 seems to run a little "smoother". You notice this when doing memory oriented things in the OS such as swapping back and forth from programs and/or webpages (IE 64 comes with the XP64 installation) Also having a large amount of programs running at once does not seem to slow down the OS as much.
I have not tried to benchmark anything yet so I really couldn't give you more specific details. Would you notice a difference? Maybe.
I work in the IT field and we are always taking things apart and putting them together and playing with stuff. I installed XP64 to play with it and to get familiar with the problems that will arise with this OS.
I would not suggest loading XP64 if it is your only computer and you rely on having an up and running OS. I have had no problems yet but we all know about running 1st version software.

Thank for the advice punk, but last night I couldn't hold my self to trie it. Now I not sure what happen if is install or not (win xp64), because I downloaded it from microsoft, copy it to a CD, reset the notebook with the Cd on it. This where I got cunfuse I press f12 while it show the hp logo, it will take me to another and had a slash flashing for a while and write something and start loading winxp (regular) automatically. Then I also trie by pressing f8 and f10 on the hp screen, f8 took me to a screen with 4 or 5 choice but no matter what I choice it would take me to the regular xp loading and f10 doesnt do anything just load xp.
Now does the loading screen for xp 64 is different from xp? How could I know if have installed xp 64? Oh btw I found Nvidia XP 64 drivers 66.96 and was able to install it without any problem, then I trie to install the newest version that nvidia have for win xp64 (release march 3) and wasn't successfull, it said that I was missing one of the components.
Thank for your help Punk. -
I've been reading this thread for the past couple of weeks and it has been very informative. I finally decided to go for the hard drive upgrade. I'm hoping you can answer a question for me regarding the Fujitsu MHT2060AT PL 4200 rpm and the Hitachi TravelStar 7K60 7200 rpm. Installed the Hitachi as my new "C" drive with the intention of doing a clean install of Windows XP Pro. Windows could not find any hard drives installed on my computer. Put the Hitachi in a Vantec Nexstar external enclosure - returned the Fujitsu to the laptop and managed to partition and format the Hitachi. I'm not sure what I've done wrong - main difference I notice is that the Fujitsu has a black adapter over pins and the Hitachi does not. Fujitsu does not fit in Vantec enclosure with that black thingie. Obviously my goal is to have the Hitachi in the laptop and the Fujitsu as the external removable. My notebook is the Pavilion zv5200, AMD 3400, 512 mb, DVD-CD rom. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

brianstretch Notebook Virtuoso
Remove the adaptor from the Fujitsu and put it on the Hitachi. Carefully, of course.
-
brianstretch Notebook Virtuoso
I don't remember what I used, I might have used a pocket knife blade to help pry the adaptor off, or used needle-nose pliers to pull it off, or just used my fingers... dunno.
As a rule I recommend sticking with Crucial and Kingston memory (in that order), but since you know you have a Samsung stick it makes sense to see what Newegg/etc charges for another Samsung PC2700 512MB SODIMM? Be sure to verify the new configuration with http://www.memtest.org after you're done. -
Hi brianstretch. Thank you for your fast response - I really appreciate it. I know you've said "carefully." This piece seems pretty firmly in place. I know many people on this forum/thread have chosen this drive (Hitachi TravelStar 7K60) - including you - did encounter this when switching drives? Should I use a little tiny flathead screwdriver, or just try wiggling with my fingers?
Hey, while I have your ear - I was planning on doing a memory upgrade as well, I ran CPU-Z, which tells me I have Samsung memory (a single 512 mb sodimm) - I'd like to add an additional 512mb. Any recommendations - (after reading this thread, I haven't noticed anyone with "Samsung" memory).
Thanks again! Regina
(zv5200, 512mb, dvd-cdrom, hopefully 60gig hitachi travelstar 7200 rpm soon) -
Thanks! - I'll try what you suggested - just comforting to know that's the correct way to proceed. As to the memory, thanks for your input, I was leaning towards "matching" what I already had . . . just wasn't sure. I will check out NewEgg. I've built a couple desktops (AMD, of course!), and I'm definitely not a expert, but this notebook stuff has me frazzled.
Thanks for the info!

I think the HP person made up that answer. Externally, the XP-M is just as fast as the Athlon 64. My only concern is that they did something deliberate to prevent you from swapping in an Athlon 64, but odds are they didn't. Someone has to try and let us know.

HP has e-mailed me to say that the motherboard that comes with the AMD 3000+ is too slow for me to upgrade to 3700+. Does anyone have better information?

The motherboard I am talking about is in a ZV5410us. Currently with a AMD 3000+ that I would like to upgrade to a AMD 3700+. Could I burn out(?) the motherboard components by doing a swap? Bill

OK. I'll try the AMD 3000+ to AMD 3700+ upgrade and report back.

I do not know if this is of any use or not, but the utility Belarc Advisor reports my motherboard is "Board: Compal 08A0 32.41".
Good luck on your upgrade. I may try it at some point, but my upgrade path is clearcut.

I don't see how, so long as you take the usual care when doing CPU swaps. It's theoretically possible that they used different motherboards that can't handle the higher wattage the DTR-class Athlon 64's burn, but I seriously doubt it. I'd pick up some Arctic Clean and Arctic Silver 5 along with that new CPU, btw.
-
brianstretch Notebook Virtuoso
CPU-Z says I have a Compal 08A0 32.40. It figures they've done some board revisions. I have one of the earliest zv5000z's. I'd assume that folks with the 32meg GeForce 420 Go have yet another board revision.

Bill :::: zv5000z :: 3200+ :: 1GB :: 100GB 5400rpm :: 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) :: XP Pro -
Hello... I'm interested in knowing if anyone here has experienced an issue similar to the one I'm having with my brand new zv5000 (3700+, 1GB, 80GB 5400, 15.4" WSXGA+, XP Pro).
When running on the battery, everything works great. When plugged in, if I run anything that brings the cpu utilization up to 100% (setiathome works great for this by the way), the cpu fan kicks on within 1 or 2 seconds. 4-6 seconds later, the fan kicks in high for 3 seconds, then the system simply shuts off.
All of this happens very quickly. I would think, if it were an overheating problem, it would take a little longer than 6-10 seconds, and it would probably happen when on the battery.
I'm not sure if it is an issue with true heat, the heat sensor, or something else. I guess the heat thing makes sense if the cpu speed is scaled back when running on the battery. I haven't found anything verify if it works that way or not.
I spent 40 minutes of "quality time" with a tech support rep. After trying to explain the issue and going through several "tests" (obviously from a script or flow chart), the tech support person put me on hold to talk to a tech supervisor. Five minutes later, he returned and stated the problem was the power adapter, and they were sending me a new one.
Personally. I don't think it is a power adapter issue. Checking mine with a meter showed a steady 18.8 vdc (though it was not tested under load).
So, while a wait for the new power adapter, I figure I would ask around.
Any input or feedback would be appreciated...
Thanks...

Confirmation that XP-M to Athlon 64 upgrades work here.
dstuart: it could be the brick, but the fan behavior does make it sound like a heat problem. The top speed is limited by a couple notches while on battery, which makes a dramatic difference in heat output. Plugged in, things can get very hot, but not THAT quickly... so I suspect someone forgot to apply thermal paste to the heatsink or something simple like that. If you're feeling ambitious you can try cleaning the CPU and heatsink with Arctic Clean (or rubbing alcohol) and applying Arctic Silver 5 (read the instructions on arcticsilver.com), I'll give better than 50/50 odds that'll fix it. Meanwhile, try undervolting with Clockgen for nForce3 motherboards:
http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php
Set your Power Scheme to "Always On" and try full speed at 1.3V core (vs. 1.5V default). That (almost?) always works (AMD's default voltages are very excessively conservative). Run MobileMeter to monitor your system's speed/temps.Last edited by a moderator: May 5, 2015 -
I know you all recommend the Mobile Meter but have you checked out the AMD PowerNow! Dashboard?
I have not seen it but was just wondering what the thoughts were on it.

Hey all. Great forum!
Ok, stupid question for you all. My analytical brain gets me in trouble sometimes by "over-thinking" things.
Anyway, I had the same trouble most are having in that my MHz reading was stuck at 797MHz, as read in the System Properties. As suggested here, I downloaded the Mobile Meter and found Windows to be wrong (wow...really?).
So, I spent the next 3 hours watching the "Frequency" graph, on the Mobile Meter, jump from 800MHz to 1800MHz. I began thinking (of course) about whether it was actually worse for the processor to stay at 1800Mhz or constantly jump from 800MHz to 1800MHz. I honestly do not know, as I am not sure what is involved in the on-demand frequency changes.
Is there any opinion on this?
BTW - zv5410, 3000+ 64, 512MB, Geforce 440 64MB
Thanks!

Kudos to HP Repair Quick turnaround -
My zv5000 amd3200+ 2gb 100gb drive has been ill for about 3 months (CF card reader intermittent, switching to battery while plugged in, CD intermittent). The CD died totally last weekend- 13 days before end of 1 year warrantee. I sent it in to HP afternoon of 22nd - it returned fully fixed the morning of 24th. Only issue was that Norton antivirus said it had invalid activation code (HP swapped Mobo) so I had to reinstall Norton.
I bought another year of warrantee.

It was just pointed out that CrystalCPUID will do automatic frequency scaling at whatever core voltages you like. I set 1GHz/0.8V, 1.6GHz/1.025V, and 2GHz/1.225V on my Mobile-class Athlon 64, and the speed jumps up and down as needed. Nice! Most DTR-class Athlon 64's can handle 1GHz at 0.875V, 1.4GHz at 1V, and full speed at 1.3V. Set your Power Scheme to Always On if you're going to do this of course.

brianstretch: Thanks for your advice.
The new brick made no difference (as expected). Tech support said take it to a local authorized dealer/service center. All of them stated, they send out the systems for repair, and that I could expect a 2-3 week turn-around.
Being the impatient type I am, I went ahead and ordered the Arctic Silver 5. In the meantime, since I was "feeling ambitious", I went ahead and checked out the heatsink. There appeared to be way too much compound gobbed on it.
I cleaned it up, re-applied fresh (silcone-based) compound, and tried it out. Huge difference. It's running much cooler now, and does not shut down under load. The cpu temp now peaks around 60 deg C. when under continuous/high-clock-rate load, and runs aournd 36 deg C. when under light/idel load. Hopefully, the Arctic Ice will improve on that some.
BTW, what is typical expected cpu temp under full load I could use as a rough point of reference?
Again, thanks for your input...

60C under load is better than average, so I'd say you're in very good shape. You can improve that further by undervolting with CrystalCPUID (see my previous message in this thread, above) if you like.

I love mine it is large with a p4 3.0ghz, 40gb hard drive and I purchased a ram upgrade on ebay for less than $30 doubling the ram to from 256 to 512mb. It came with a cdrw/dvd rom combo drive and plenty of ports the only problem I had was getting my wireless b router configured so all I had to do was download a driver update from windows. I have windows xp home installed and have played some games on it. I also download movies from movielink and play them on my hdtv with this unit works great very pleased with it. Screen is huge and did have some difficulty obtaining a cary case but office depot had one that worked great and was under $100.

With regards to the problems I am having, the screens backlight intermittently goes in and out. So I'm gonna send it back to get that fixed, but don't want my 7k60 to go with it.
