now I have to go through the belaboring process of configing the perfect model just to have them pull it the day before I purchase. I'm just trying to build a DTR. i don't know why i kill myself over these things.

I happen to get the Sunday ads on Saturday. I took a quick look to see what HP and Compaq Athlon 64 units are on sale for the next week. Here are the results: (I have pasted a table in html source code I can not figure out why this forum adds so much blank space, please scroll down if necessary)

Well, I guess I'll add my bit to try to push this thread to 48 pages. First, let me say thanks to Brianstretch for all his help on this (and the R3000) forum. Thanks also to all you other contributers. It made my decision much easier when I first became interested in a laptop about a month ago. These are my impressions of the ZV5000. It's my first laptop, though I've been using PCs since my Timex Sinclair 1000 back in 1982.

I purchased a refurbished ZV5000 from Ecost a couple of weeks ago. You can see my specs below. Essentially, I collected the rebate amount up front in exchange for a 90 day warranty. I plan to purchase an extended/accidental damage warranty from HP in the near future, so the warranty issue is a wash anyway.

So far, I've been very pleased with my purchase. Thanks to my reading ahead of time, I knew generally what to expect, so no big surprises. Initially, I configured a Compaq R3000, but while waiting for it to be delivered (and waiting and waiting...), I began to regret not ordering a few of the upgrades. When I saw the HP deal on Ecost, I decided to cancel my Compaq order and get the HP. At first, I thought I'd like the Compaq aesthetically more, but working with the HP, I've really begun to like its looks. Also, the rounded front edge is very comfortable, and I'd imagine more comfortable than the Compaq.

Performance wise, I'm perfectly satisfied. The 4200 rpm drive may be a little slow, but I really don't notice it that much. I was worried that capturing digital video would result in dropped frames, but I didn't notice any problems with that. Of course, once it's in the computer, the processor is plenty fast for any editing/encoding. The PowerNow! technology works as advertised on mine. I guess I've been lucky judging from some of the comments here. I get the three different speeds that this processor is supposed to work on - 800mHz, 1600mHz, and (full speed) 1800mHz. Of course, I had to really push it to get it to ramp up to 1800mHz, but it will step through all three speeds if required.

The screen is wonderful! I watched "Step Into Liquid" in high definition Windows Media and it was really nice! Too bad there aren't more HD-WMV files out there. I still might try a few of the IMAX films available. I just ordered the remote control for the Intermedia DVD software so I can use it while I'm laying in bed. It makes a nice second DVD player for the bedroom. I didn't get Brightview, but this screen still seems nice. No bad or stuck pixels that I've been able to find (but I don't really obsess over that too much).

Size hasn't been an issue, but I haven't travelled with it yet. I found a nice case at Target which is a little different from the standard laptop cases out there. I'm able to cram everything I need into the case, so at least I can take it with me. I also just purchased the HP backpack as an alternative. I'll see if the weight is a big issue or not. For now, the size doesn't bother me.

Battery life is okay, but again, I keep it plugged in most of the time. When it's unplugged, I'm sitting on the porch surfing the web, or maybe playing a game, or editing a video. I get maybe 2 hours on my 8 cell battery, but I haven't put a clock to it. Wear level on the battery is at 2%, which is okay with me. I'll keep an eye on it to see if it degrades much over time.

As for playing games, I haven't tried too many yet. I'm not big into games, but I do enjoy them occasionally. I actually bought some of the older games for it (Half Life Platinum, Unreal II), so I don't expect any problems with them. I like Call of Duty, but I hear this won't really play well on here. I may get Battlefield 1942 for my military kicks, or go with America's Army (especially since it's free).

As for other accessories, I have the Microsoft wireless mouse, which works fines. I bought a firewire cable (4-pin to 4-pin) for my video camera, and I have a compact flash adapter for use in the PC card slot (I can't believe that compact flash isn't one of the 5 cards supported by the card reader). I also bought a network cable for those times when I don't have a wireless connection. It came with a length of phone cable for (gasp!) dial up connections. I already had a usb flash drive that I use everyday.

All in all, I'm perfectly happy with this laptop. If I travelled all the time, I may wish I had a smaller one. But I use this mainly as a "mobile desktop" and this certainly works for that. It looks like it will meet my needs for the next few years.

I think that was a great review. I say that because you got a well configured model instead of a maxed out with all the frills. I like to hear you don't have to go top of the line on every upgrade and still be satisfied with your purchase. Especially in your case with doing some video editing and such. I think your helping a lot of people with future configurations. WAIT a minute,,, you don't work for HP or own stock in the company do you?????????????????????

Well the HP site now has the zv6000 series only. Guess this is the end of the zv5000 forum. They must have listened to the gripes about the graphics. This one has the ATI Radeon 200M graphics chip. Either 32MB or for only $24 more you get the 128 MB version plus a 6-in-one media card reader, the IEEE-1394 port and an ExpressCard54 slot??.

On the down side the 3700+ Athlon 64 is not available, and worse yet the WSXGA (1680x1050) LCD screen is missing from the options. Still no 7200 rpm drives available.

The price appears to have increased, but right now they are offering a $500 instant rebate plus a $50 mail in rebate. This configuration is $1421 with the mail in rebate.

Operating System Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional with SP2
    Processor AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3500+ (2.2GHz/512KB L2 Cache)
    Display 15.4" WXGA Widescreen (1280x800)
    Graphics Card 128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)
    Memory 256MB DDR SDRAM (1x256MB)
Hard Drive 60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
Primary CD/DVD Drive DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    Networking 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM)
Primary Battery 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

    I prefer my zv5000z!

I have a basic HP zv5000z bought from Circuit City 8 months ago and loved it until my husband took it over from work. Waiting to saive up enough money for a new one, I now find they are unavailble. What would your advice be: 1) Get the Compaq Presario R3000Z from Costco or 2) the new zv6000 from Costco with the $700. rebate. The new zv6000 will still be more expensive since the price has gone up dramatically.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I HAD the same problem with my R3000 series. Iam now running driver version 1.1.0.0 with no problems now.... I use Rightmark cpu clock Utilty and the cpu will "Throttle" up when a application is started, until a aplication is started it runs at 797 MHz @ 1.100v/Multiplier (fid) 4.0x at full speed it runs at 2198MHz @ 1.55v/Multipler (fid) 11.0x. you must have sent back you laptop already ( Thats just what HP told me to do they said it must be a "Hardware Malfunction" It was just a case of having the wrong driver installed you will also want to download powernow! from AMD.

AMD 64 3400+ 1mb ram and running hard!!

Check Ecost.com for refurbished ZV5000's and R3000's. That's where I got mine. If you're worried about the 90 day warranty, you can buy any of the extended or accidental damage warranties from HP, so you're covered. The selection on Ecost seems to change a little from day to day, so keep looking until you find the one you like. I got mine for a little over $900.

Costco just added a pre-built hp zv6000 configuration for $999.99 + tax, after $50 rebate. The specs are pretty impressive for this price point. Going pre-built saves about $300 versus configuring the same machine on the Costco site.

I hate to see this thread fade away. My R3000Z is on its way from China as of yesterday. I still have to read these 55pages+ to see what tweaks a novice such as I should be doing. I've never reformated, installed memory,,,nothing. Unless of course anyone wants to give me a quick tweak guide.

Yeah, I finally read through it all last week. Lots of good information. Also, don't forget to check the specific R3000/Z5000 forum. Good info there as well, and since it's specific to these machines, it's a little easier to find things.

As a matter of interest I took the opportunity to plug in a Samsung 213T 1600 x 1200 pixel 21.3" LCD display. It works beautifully with the analog output from the notebook. Of course I upgraded the HP graphics driver to the nVidia driver quite some time ago. With rebates I picked this impressive display up for $660 after rebates as an early birthday present for myself.

    Hey,
I just found this site today because I was trying to see if anyone else has had a problem with their zv5000 as I have. Basically I have been having fan problems. Mostly them just making unusual noises. The first time it happend was about a week I received it from the online store on HP shopping, sent it back and they repaired it, however unusual noises(not the same as before) began to show themselves again recently and the tech support person I talked to was very apolgetic and reassured me that this wouldn't happen again. I just wanted to know if someone else has had this problem. I also had to replace my hard drive as well. I'm sorry if I missed a previous post but i didn't really have time to look throught the whole thread. Thanks a lot.
Other than those issues I love my laptop and it works quite well!

    XP 64 on zv5000

My zv5000 locks about twice a day with winlogon.exe or explorer at 99%. Figuring I am infected by something norton didn't catch I bought another 100gb hard drive (seagate 5400 5yr warantee $180) to rebuild windows XP. However, first I tried to install xp 64. Installed ok but I couldn't find driver to run screen at 1680x1050. So I am not reinstalling xp pro.

Question: anyone get xp-64 to work on zv5000?

    Thanx

    Hey Bobsandefur,

You're not the only one that's seen their computer freeze up like that. The same thing happens to me too all the time and I think it's because the 4200 rpm drives that the zv5000z comes with can't retrieve the information fast enough for the Athlon processor and gets confused. That's my theory and I'm not sure what other people think. Any comments?

    Bobsandefur,

I am running XP64 on this laptop with no problem. The only glitch that I have had is that the wirless button (turns off wireless nic) has no 64bit hardware support from HP. So when you turn it off you cannot turn the nic back on unless you boot into a 32bit OS.

As far as the video goes....

This works for both 32 and 64 bit Microsoft Os's.

HP has a proprietary video card installed in this laptop. Because of that they have thier own vendor ID grained into the video bios. When you try to install the Nvidia drivers it will fail because the HP vendor id is not listed in the INF file for the Nvidia Drivers.

    The Fix:

Install HP's drivers and you will then have the following folder on your machine: c:swsetupSP30132

Go into this folder and look for the NVCP.INF file. When you open this file you will have to look for the following tag : [NVIDIA.Mfg]

Under this tag you can copy the 2 lines that you will need in the next step.

Install Nvidia's latest drivers. The installation will fail but you will now have the following folder on your computer: c:
vidia"name of your OS"71.89 (or latest version drivers) In this folder look for the nv4_disp.inf file. When you open this file up you will notice the same tag as the last file [NVIDIA.Mfg]. Paste the two lines from the NVCP.INF file at the end of the list of vendor id's.

Install the Nvidia drivers and you should have no problem.

One more note... (just for fun)

When you install the new drivers the vendor ID from the old INF file will look like this:
    %NVIDIA_NV17.DEV_0176.1% = nv4, PCIVEN_10DE&DEV_0176&SUBSYS_006D103C

When it goes to install the drivers your video card will be named:
    %NVIDIA_NV17.DEV_0176.1%
You can change this part of the line to anything that you want to and it will show up on your system as that name.
For example I changed the line to the following:
    NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra = nv4, PCIVEN_10DE&DEV_0176&SUBSYS_006D103C

Now when I pull up my device manager it shows as a 6800 Ultra.
You can brag to your friends at work if you want to. Just dont pull up the advanced settings for the card because the loaded drivers will give it away.

    Have Fun. [ :D]

I do not know if anyone is still following this forum, but I just received a complete disk drive mounting kit for my zv5000z from http://www.impactcomputers.com. It is their part number 350834-001. It is listed as a Compaq part. It includes the cover, the connector adapter and the drive mounting screws! The price is $39.95 plus (for me) $11.27 shipping.
