new review at HP Spectre 13 Review - ComputerShopper.com ; they seem to like it. I'm hoping the photoshop result is an aberration, since I plan on doing photo work on mine.
Also, just as a data point: ordered mine with some changes on Jan 12, got a tracking number yesterday. Expected delivery (East Coast, 2day shipping) on Jan 28 although I'm hoping it will be earlierI originally ordered with the $200 coupon, then called the next day and asked about applying the 20% coupon. They didn't change the order price, but right after I got the tracking number I got an email with a refund to my card for the difference in coupon value. Doesn't reduce the taxes I was charged, but a perfectly acceptable outcome from my pov.

Rotten Apple? New 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro owners report multiple problems
If you take a look at the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina section of the Apple forums, you won’t have to spend much time to find threads where users are complaining about multiple issues when using one of Apple’s latest toys.
For instance, one Apple thread named “New Retina Macbook pro 13 Haswell system hang/unresponsive,” which at this point has over 91,000 views, 1,600 responses, and over 190 pages; includes multiple reports of instances where the new MacBook Pro’s keyboard and touch pad keep freezing on users. More than one new MacBook Pro with Retina owner noted that when speaking with Apple representatives, they were assured that the issues are software related and have nothing to do with a hardware problem. Here’s what one Apple forum poster had to say:
“I do have the same problem with my rMBP 13-inch and a couple of minutes ago I talked to the German Apple Support. He seemed to be honest and told me that it’s not a hardware but a software problem. He said that apple is working hard to fix this problem and is trying to publish a software update in about 2-3 weeks. He also said that not all late 13″ Retina do have this problem but I actually cannot believe that. I made a self diagnosis hardware test and it says that everything is working fine. Hopefully apple fixes this problem soon.”
Another forum poster was also told by an Apple rep that the problems are rooted in software.
“I chatted AGAIN with tech support today and they yet again assured me it is a software issue. I also ran some hardware tests and no issues were found. I have faith that it is a software issue and not a hardware issue.”
If Apple indeed plans to release a software update in the next two to three weeks in an effort to rectify these freezing bugs, we can only hope that the patch will come sooner rather than later. In the interim, there don’t appear to be any surefire fixes, so you’ll either have to exercise patience or return your new MacBook Pro and buy again once the freezing issues are completely cleared up. In general, it’s wise to not opt in early on new tech, as newly released gear often comes with initial bugs. This is a case in point.

I know this is technically off-topic but since most of my posting lately is here and this is such a helpful community, can someone help me with an NBR/vBulletin problem? Everytime I hit either "Reply With Quote" or just "Reply to Thread" the post box carries over every other quote I've lately put into multiple posts over the past couple of days. This only happens via the browser, not when I use Tapatalk. In my 4 years and 3,000 posts I've never encountered this.
Thanks, Jeff -
If you look at what's available at the $1600 price range you could get a business class laptop like the Thinkpad T440 or one of the higher quality Dell Latitude's that would make the MBA and even MBP look flimsy. -
OK, did some more 802.11AC wifi testing. This time I used Windows Explorer instead of LAN Speed Test Lite. Reported speeds were higher, although with a fair degree of variance. Think I am reasonably happy with this now. It ranged anywhere between about 50mbps and 350mbps.
Widi is also working. Not sure what fixed it but may have been the system restore I did. It's laggy (any way to fix that?), but works reliably.
So the only remaining issue is the backlight bleed. I've attached a couple of pics (hopefully they attached OK). Do you think this looks normal for the Spectre13 FHD screen? I took them in the dark to fully show the effect (and with Spectre at max brightness). One is a black screen and the other is a dark scene in a movie (with bleed still visible). It was hard to get a good picture - the bleed is near the bottom two corners. It's not as bad with the lights on in the room and is only visible in black or dark screens. What do you think - normal or not?
-
Is it acceptable? That is for you to decide. I almost wish I had kept my first one, because the second one was worse. Both were FHD displays.
On my first one, I couldn't see the back light bleed except on very dark screens, otherwise it was a beautiful display.
I am now waiting on a QHD version. If it is bad I will return it and give up, as I have an HP Envy 15t-j100 Quad SmartTouch that I also just bought that doesn't have any back light bleed. -
Hi,
Just have some issues with my spectre these days. The laptop keeps shutting down even when it was fully charged and does not allow me to power it up unless I plug the AC charger in.
HP Support does not recognize the battery as well. When I tried the battery test in BIOS mode it was said to be OK. But... -
Most laptop reviews consistently tout the Macbook build quality for a reason and to me it has become evident after owning them over the years. Yes all new laptops have issues as was noted, but for example this HP spectre has several. Mine buzzes, clicks, has a mild screen leak, turns on and off sometimes until I reboot, the throttling issue, whiny fan, and crappy touchpad drivers. It's my favorite pc windows laptop so far because of the form factor and battery life.
The only reason I used macbooks is for work , at the moment I have 2 pc laptops, 1 pc windows/linux workstation, 1 macbook air, 1 iphone, 1 ipad, all for work, and the attention to polish and quality on the apple machines is noticeable. That being said I think pc manufacturers have been closing the gap over the years. -
Regards, Jim -
Does anyone NOT have backlight bleed on the FHD screen (i.e. is it worth me exchanging it)? -
Seems like my edit created a duplicate post. See below.
-
Edit: Looking at your image, I would say it's on the bad side of average. You could get one that's better (or at least more of an even spread) or you could get one worse. -

Has anyone done a battery life test with CPPD on and off? I'd be curious how much difference there is...if any.

While we're on the subject of power options, this model seems to be missing the "time to display dim" option in advanced power options. It has a setting for how dim (%) to set it for dimming, but no option I found for when to dim. Usually I have it dim to, like, 10% after short time, then turn off after longer time, particularly plugged in. It seems like the only option is to have the screen on or full off.??? -

1) if the envy 15 has a TN screen, I would normally say I would take a good bit of backlight bleed with an IPS over less/no bleed with a TN. BTW, is the envy 15 a very bright screen? Nothing special about no/low bleed when it isn;t very bright. You might even want to lower the brightness and see what that does to the bleed on your 13T.
Secon, I think you may have it confused, Raptir, I believe the QHD will show less bleed, not more. First, it is not as bright. Second, the higher pixel density literally forms something of a "screen" from the backlight, so it takes brighter LEDs in back to reach penetrate and I'm fairly certain the LED backlight is the same for both screens.
Overall, Randy, I'd think twice before chucking this if the backlight bleed is your only major issue. I have read a good bit of the Envy 15 j100 thread and there seemed to be build issues, keyboard flex, and, if the screen really is TN, I'd be amazed if, side by side, you don't see a great difference with the 13T's IPS, and that's on-axis. Once you alter your viewing angle even the best TNs distort, especially vertically. -

Sorry to run three posts consecutively, but I find often if I combine that some things get buried. The previous two were for others, this one's for me
.
So, when all is said and done - and I'm still remiss for not doing a full review - I really adore this laptop and have essentially none of the problems (1 week in) that anyone has posted here - except one, which has had the least mention of all: I have several problems with the trackpad:
1) Too often I go to either move the cursor or scroll and there is no response at all. I do notice this happens when the computer is cool and I've just started using it, so I'm hoping I can confirm that and then I'd be ok (it's been unusually cold even indoors these days so it's an anomaly. Unfortunately, I find that moving the cursor is better after warm up, but scrolling less so. I have a more general problem with scrolling...
2) Too often I am trying to scroll and instead I just move the cursor up or down. Sometimes I have to click down on the clicpad and then I seem to get better traction scrolling. Still, it "slips" too often for my liking. Plus, when it gets traction, I still find the fastest settings and full coasting still produce a much slower scroll than I'm used to, even with similar vintage clicpads on other HP machines (eg Envy 14 Spectre Ivy Bridge) and other non-HP but same vintage Synaptics driver.
3) I have made several adjustments to Palm rejection settings and sensitivity, and it has improved things, but I still get more "flying cursor" than I wish. I'm using the September 2013 17.0.5.17. My 13T came with the January update (still 17.xxxxx) but I found it worse in several respects.
So, my main question is whether I may have a hardware issue. If so, it's going to be a hard decision to let go of this machine in hopes of a better trackpad, because, fingers crossed, I seem to have gotten a real gem. I have not experienced a single problem - after applying fixes for the throttling - that anyone has raised: no buzzing, no headphone noise, no screen bleed, no build issues whatsoever, amazing battery life - still gathering data, but east 8.5 hrs of combined web, productivity, Skype, video, could be closer to 10 if I turned some things down, especially the screen, and did less video. -
Now my battery is failed completely. Darn, now I have to wait again.
-
As for the HP Envy 15t-j100 Quad TouchSmart, I do realize that it has a TN panel and that is OK with me. I actually am not running it at it's brightest level and it is plenty bright for me. I did calibrate it and the HD screen looks great to me, very clear with good colors and contrast. I realize it is not as good as an IPS display for off angle viewing, but I'm the only one that is looking at it (from straight on) so it is perfect for my use. I also am OK with the keyboard, sound, and touch pad.
The Spectre 13 will be more for when I need to travel with a laptop. -
And unfortunately things don't work the way you've posted with pixel density and backlight bleed. The FHD display has fewer pixels but they are larger and do not impact the backlight bleed. -
-
Edit: nvm I wrote the wrong thing, and it is requiring me to have more than 10 words written

I have seen a brightness maximum of 340 NITS stated in print for the Spectre 13t-3000. However, there is no confirmation if that is for the FHD and/or QHD screens. Can anyone confirm if one screen is brighter than the other of if they are both 340 NIT capable? I have seen a couple posts stating the FHD screen is brighter but I would like to know if there is official HP material confirmation of this anywhere. I sure can't find it.

There is some mysterious fluid that appears near the power button of my spectre.
I hope the second one has no problem comes with it. -

Anyone know how HP or any computer company handles customer product returns in terms of reselling the items to other customers? I know just about everyone here would be very unhappy to find out that their "new" ultrabook or an exchanged one being sent to them has been in hard use in another person's home for 21 days. I am real curious what HP does with a customer returned PC. Is it resold to another customer? If so, what quality control or testing do they do with the product prior to reselling? Is a system that is returned due to a real performance issue report by a customer but not "validated" by HP staff just checked for visible scratches, cleaned up and reboxed for the next customer? Anyone have any insight into this?

I returned the Spectre and bought a rMBP 13. If you can swing the MacBook and don't have some compelling use for the Spectre's touchscreen (I couldn't find one), trade it in for one. It's worth the premium. I'm sure this'll annoy some folks, but this is twenty years with Windows talking. Try the Kool-Aid. Unless the thing up and explodes tomorrow, I can't see my impression changing.

Ok, lots more than you were asking, but I think this is good stuff to know for any who have never delved into the murky world of refurbed computers!

No QHD can also have bleed! Mine did but it was very very little but ended up returning mine because it had dead pixels on the left side of the screen and lines of stuck pixels. On the FHD vs QHD screen technology. Some one very long ago posted that the FHD is definitely IPS. And according to them the QHD might be IGZO because the slight variation in viewing angles.
-
I'm not sure if this is "normal " but when the screen first turns on from either sleep or start up , it seems to "warm up" a little and starts dimmer than usual then brightens. Not a tremendous difference , but curious if this is normal behavior for an IPS screen. Btw it's a bit cold here in the Northeast and the notebook case around the screen always feels a bit chilly . I also have brightness set at fixed 100 % with auto dimming off.

Apple 13" MacBook Air 2013 (Running Windows 8): Review
The only unusual drop is with the dual-GPU MacBooks that Windows doesn't properly manage. Otherwise, the only thing you're giving up is the touchscreen. -

As far as the QHD on the 13t haing "very, very little bleed that squares with my observation of "none," as both qualify as inconsequential. Sorry to hear about your dead pixels. I hope you ordered a replacement, as yours is probably the first reported on these 125+ pages.

Hey guys/gals,
I received a driver update notification from the HP Support Assistant this afternoon.
An IDT HD Audio Driver 6.10.6493.0 and an Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) driver 9.5.15.1730
I just installed the drivers and CPU throttling appears to be working for me.I have not made any other adjustments to my system settings.
-
I've been using the 13t-3000 (qHD screen) for a couple weeks now and am quite happy with it, with one caveat. I sought out this thread because of a pronounced dark streak along the left side of the screen which has become bothersome. The infamous 'backlight bleed' is present in the same part of the screen, but that actually doesn't bother me very much. It's actually most offensive with brighter backgrounds. Worth going through the hassle of warranty repair, or just something to live with? I understand that there will be some light falloff at the screen edges/corners, but this seems too severe. Running my desktop taskbar on the left side obscures it somewhat.
-
Haven't seen that problem yet (darker on the left side).
I personally couldn't live with that and would send it in for a repair or replacement.
I must say, these display quality problems are starting to concern me.Dpat09 likes this. -

I've got it down to two issues, neither it must be said, are show-stoppers:
1) Trackpad - written about this several times. Gotten it down to, slow scrolling/occasional lack of traction (either can't move the pointer at all or when trying to scroll with two fingers it only moves the cursor, doesn't cause a scroll.) I've noticed it's usually when I've recently fired up the machine and the surface of the touchpad is cool to the touch that these two things occur. I've learned an ingenious workaround for when this occurs: use the touchscreen - duh! Still inconvenient and shouldn't be necessary, but it does resolve the problem until the touchpad warms up in a few minutes. The other touchpad problem I had is also mostly resolved: still get an occasional "flying cursor" while typing. A member here helped me adjust the "Smartsense" palm rejection settings for best result and to reduce the touch sensitivity just enough to ignore a light palm brush while typing but no so insensitive that it worsens the other problem I mentioned above.
Anyone's thoughts greatly appreciated. One last think I may try is to install the generic drivers from the Synaptics web site (other Hp drivers are worse!) I'd lose the W8 gestures on edges, but don't use those anyway.
2) Intel WIDI Wireless Screen - video works fine but audio has "hiccups," blacks out fraction of a second every couple of seconds. (I'm using a Netgear PTV-2000 receiver at the TV and it works fine with two different laptops with two different Intel wifi cards.) Anyone have any luck with WIDI, ideas for me to try?
After one week and quite a bit of regular usage, these are my only issues. Pretty good, I'd say.
