I got mine on my birthday on the 13th. Everything this time around seems great. Third time was a charm. My first two came with plastic. This one was with the sleeve. It's more of a thing that HP I think started for this model to make it more premium feeling. The sleeve is even branded. I was going to buy a sleeve, now I won't have to. Besides the computer was going to be in my bag and the sleeve was just for scratch protection. Its a tight fit though. Unless sleeves are meant to be that way? I've never bought any sort of sleeve for any of my electronics so... Anyways third times a charm . Anyone have any opinion on whether I should buy accidental protection from HP or SquareTrade?

I did my first call to HP and tried to get 20%. It was a good battle but nothing happened. I even tried to win over the sales associate who is in Boise, Idaho, where I used to live. The supervisor was very busy but he kept putting me on hold to speak with her. I'm a little torn right now. I found $150 coupon and can get 3% from fat wallet...about $187 savings. 20% gives me about $250. I think I lose the $150 coupon at midnight tonight. This laptop is for my wife and she says "just get it". I hate passing up a potential good deal, if there is any way to I might get the 20%. B

I did send an email to to CS and asked for them to call me back. I may try to call one more time but I'm losing hope.

The name of this game is perseverance! You generally need a supervisor to get a special discount approved so one who is too busy is not going to be of any use. Say thanks, hang up and start over. Sometimes I think we do obsess over getting every penny off. I can't tell you to take the $187 and don't lose sleep over the $63 you'd be missing because I don't know your finances. But given the very fair list price of this product, $187 off list would still beat any of the competition and will get you just about the highest quality build and most attractive Ultrabook of its kind. Also, keep in mind that you get a second bite at the apple when you've owned it for around 15 days and you can call to complain about a bunch of little things you're just not happy about and you think you're going to return it. More often than not you'll be offered $100 - $150 to keep it. That may seem to sleazy of there really isn't anything you don't like about it but especially with HP it's how the game is played. Besides I just adore this thing (6 weeks in) but I could find things to complain about. Good luck and enjoy!

Generally Square Trade is much easier to get a claim through but it depends on cost too. For about the same cost I'd go with St... But...there's a best kept secret to getting ACH insurance almost for free! If you own a home and have homeowners insurance or rent and have renters insurance you can add a computer (or a camera, piece of jewelry, art) to your coverage for about $15/yr! And that will not only cover ACH but also theft and fire. There's really no downside except if you break a machine every year because it will cause your overall insurance rates to go up. If you are a student and don't have insurance but use your parent's address as your "permanent" address you can add it to their policy.

    lovelaptops,

Thanks for your feedback...I've enjoyed your posts on this thread a great deal. Looks like I shot myself in the foot. I thought I had the $150 coupon yesterday but it ended up not working. It was fine of Friday but I think they pulled the deal. It's more of a game for me and I'm probably expending more energy than I need to for $63. My wife rolls her eyes, which I don't blame her.

I'm going to wait a couple of days to see if I can at least get the $150 and I'll call HP one more time today. I don't really see myself calling after we get the laptop to reduce the price, although that is tempting. Thanks for letting me ramble on about saving (or not) some $'s.

When I called them yesterday the CS asked which other brand i was looking at. I mentioned yoga 2 pro and he looked them up and said that their offer beat them out of the water. Who knows if he actually looked it up but sounded like he did. It was tough to argue with that.

It really looks like a great laptop, wish we were in the market during black friday. There were some great deals.

    Cheers, CK

    ck787,
That was the situation I was in. I had a $100 off coupon that was expiring at midnight as well as the FW 5% cash back. I was going back and forth if I should wait to be able to save a bit more. My fiance told me to just buy it (since it was going to be her laptop). I just pulled the trigger. I may have been able to get a bit more by waiting for a slightly better deal, but my combined $160 off was good enough for me. A 20% deal would have been closer to $230 off, but we've got the laptop now and are enjoying it.

We ended up getting the exact same configuration as you're considering.

On first login, it asks you to log in with a Microsoft Account (live, hotmail, etc.). You may be able to have the create a local account. At the very least, you could just run the recovery program when you get the laptop to reset it.

    Things I tested:
    • Screen for dead & stuck pixels, used this site in full screen: LCD Dead Pixel Test Backgrounds
    • Screen for backlight bleed (ours is only visible on the opening bios screen with the HP logo and 2.35:1 and really dark movies)
    • RAM, used a Fedora live USB to run MemTest86 (wouldn't work in normal mode, had to use the MemTest failsafe mode).
    • Wifi
    • Bluetooth, tested by pairing a keyboard we have
    • Ran through all the various touchpad gestures and clicks as well as the touchscreen
    • Tested every key on the keyboard as well as the keyboard backlight
    • Tested both USB ports
    • Plugged it into an external monitor to test the HDMI
    • Tested the speakers and headphone jack
    • Inspected it for any scratches
    • Made sure the battery could charge and ran the battery to empty to get an idea of battery life

    I'm sure I forgot something.

Actually it would be a great idea to come up with a list of things everyone must test with their laptops during the return window of time.

Still waiting myself for the 20% coupon to appear :) Looks like i'll be playing the waiting game for a long time :p

I pulled the trigger. I called back to HP and was able to get 15%, which is about what I found on Friday. I feel pretty good about that and I'm anxious for it's arrival. My wife is going to have to pry it out of my hands...

I'm sure I'll have some questions with set up and checking to make sure it doesn't have any of the issues that have been reported in the thread.

    Cheers, CK

Thank you! That's a comprehensive list - I'm not dealing with very technical people so they won't have Fedora lying around on a USB stick- but the rest of it I can probably talk them through. I don't have a live account - so I will set one of those up now and they can use it. (Yeah Microsoft I SO don't need another account).

I'm currently waiting with breath held for HP to email me back within 1 business day to confirm the sale. I've been told I can't buy using a NZ payment address so I'm hoping using Paypal will obfuscate the source of my funds sufficiently. If not I'll have to use my bro's CC and pay him back. There is no way on this earth that I'm paying the extra US$500 to buy it locally

You can use any Microsoft account. If you don't have one, outlook.com is newer so you may have more luck getting a name you'd like.

If they don't have a live linux to boot to MemTest from, the laptop does have some diagnostic software built in. You hit esc on boot, and it's something like F2 or F3 will get you to diagnostic tools, where you can run some tests on various hardware components, including RAM.

You actually don't even need to sign up for a Microsoft account if you don't want. When that screen comes up, if I remember right, choose "create new account" or "decline" and a link on the bottom will come up allowing you to set up a "local account". If someone already has set their new system up with a Microsoft account, they can also change it to a local account so as not to be logged in to Microsoft all the time (privacy). I could be wrong but I believe you do need to be logged in with a Microsoft account to download or update Metro apps, if you use them. I use classic shell and boot into the desktop so it doesn't really affect me at this point.

Okay update. So everything this time around seems fine . little to no light leak. So small you have to look for it. The edges are having slight image retention issues which can get frustrating. Especially as a designer oriented person. Using Photoshop or chrome for more than 25-30 minutes will leave a shadow. Using Microsoft Word blew it out of the water with retention. I could read the title of the document and the close buttons as clear as printed paper and it was even white. I could see it immediately after opening the photos app. I don't know what to do. I bought this computer for the incredible value(still expensive). However using bill me later to pay for it over the course of 18 months. There are zero MacBook deals that can offer bill me later for that long as far as I know. Even macbooks have the problem but they also have a different display supplier other than LG,(Samsung) that also make the retina displays as they don't get retention. I don't think its really HPs fault. I really want to "blame" LG. Not to mention the MacBooks only come with 1 year warranty, but having the ability to take it to the Apple store to have them replace a screen within 2 days is incredible, and vital when using the computer for school related things. The best part of the Spectre - everyone literally stops and stare then say "thats one hell of a sexy laptop." Then they get incredibly mesmerized by how thin it is. Just today I had a friend put his 13in Air next to it and most people agreed that the Spectre looks more premium. Everyone also seems to LOVE the screen. They see the 2560x1440 wallpapers I set and go gaga. To me this is HP's "Macbook Air with Retina Display"; its the perfect hybrid. Anyone have any advice. Also Lovelaptops thanks for the reply, do you have a QHD screen? And do you notice any retention? Try using chrome or anything without full screen mode and after a while switch over and open the photos app. I have my theme set to gray as default BTW. And I can see it clearly. Also I set the taskbar to autohide because on the last replacement I could even read the clock burned in.

BTW I might have made a ton of grammar mistake or even spelling mistakes. I typed all of this on a phone to get all of what I wanted to say "out" before I forget.

Unfortunately, you aren't the only one with this issue. I too have image retention. It is visible during the instances you said, and is particularly noticeable when you do a restart...look for the taskbar, windows logo, and notification icons to still be visible. I don't think there is much that can be done to reduce.

For the Google Chrome users, it looks like Google is making progress on scaling. The latest Dev update looks much better than the previous versions on the QHD screen. No more giant scrollbar on the right, all of the toolbar icons are now visible, and the text and images now look much better (not pixelated like before). I'll see if I stay with it or keep using Firefox Nightly.

Does the image retention problem affects both the FHD and QHD screen??? Or is it worse in either one of those screens??

I've not noticed any image retention on our FHD. I can run the rMBP image retention test to check, though I'm not sure I want to know if we do have it and I just can't see it.

    Try this:
    Retina MBP (rMBP) image-retention test

The image retention seems to happen only on the sides of the screen. I have a feeling that it is caused by how the screen is put together with its housing, Where it might be a hair to tight and cause it? I know that's how the light leaks happen, but on my last one I did notice that where ever there was a slight leak there was retention. This one has a slight halo effect. the sides sort of are lighter than the rest of the screen.

It's like you read my mind :D. I ran it for just a few minutes and of course I did see some shadow of the checkerboard, but then I ran it on 3 other computers I have - 1-5 yrs old, and had about the same results. All of the image retention was, of course, gone within a few minutes. It's not clear to me that this is a test of anything except that extraordinarily bright, high contrast images left static on a bright, high contrast LCD screen for many minutes will leave a temporary "ghost." Seems to me they invented something decades ago to protect screens from having any lasting impacts from a single image burning itself into the screen: "screen savers!!"

I'm with you, oryan_dunn, as far as not being concerned that any of this is a lasting problem to be concerned about. I happen to feel the same way about "backlight bleed," something given all too much lineage in this thread (and many more like it, dealing with modern, very bright IPS LCDs). Like "image retention," I consider backlight bleed to be a condition in search of a dire warning when, in fact, it's an almost inevitable side effect of the ultra bright backlights in today's best laptop LCDs and for reasons I understand but can't explain, is a good bit more likely to occur with IPS screens. Being able to detect this even beyond the initial OS-launch screen gave me about 15 minutes of anxiety until I realized that: a) I'd owned that laptop (a 2010 Sony Z13 with a 13" FHD TN screen) for 4 years and had never noticed the "bleed" on actual content and, b) until this thread - god love it - got the better of my long-held belief that the whole issue of "backlight bleed" is hooey, I lived happily with the then-best-and-only 13" FHD LCD and with others since it - including the awesome QHD of the Spectre 13t which exhibits a very small amount of "backlight bleed" and, I now must acknowledge, "image retention," neither of which are to a degree that interfere with my enjoyment of the wonderful displays nor are they, I am unshakable in this conviction, signs of a defective screen or problems down the road.

(***Something I always forget to bring up when pontificating on this "pet peeve" subject: I owned an HP Elitebook 8560 with the "legendary" 10 bit color, IPS, "Dreamcolor" screen - a $700 option at the time (I didn't pay for it, or for the computer; it was a ridiculous over-correction for a defect-ridden product I had purchased from HP which they replaced with a workstation worth 2.5x what my problematic computer - a 2011 Envy 14 - was worth.) But again, I digress. The point here is: the "reference standard" HP Dreamcolor screen had the worst backlight bleed I have ever seen, before or since!)

Here are my suggestions for anyone feeling plagued by either of the two conditions, which shall go nameless henceforth from my posts: 1) don't even look at the splash screen as your computer is launching its operating system and don't look for imperfections on the edges or center of your lcd unless you have very distracting dead/stuck pixels or the rare case of so much light showing through the image on your screen that it can be considered defective and should be replaced; 2) Don't display an extremely bright black and white checkerboard on your screen for 15 minutes-ever!; it's bad for any screen and it's why screen savers were invented! ;) and, finally, 3) If you don't want to experience any of these unavoidable (as of current technology) minor side effects of very bright, very high contrast, unlimited viewing angle IPS displays....don't get one, saving yourself lots of grief and around $500 in the process.

After all, 3 years ago this would have been a 1366x768 TN, 150 nits bright, 140:1 contrast ratio, blacks so bright they made grays look white, 26% of sRGB color gamut reproduced. But no backlight bleed in sight and no possibility of "image retention" - seeing the original image was so difficult, having the screen retain it was the last thing you worried about.

Why not just kick back and enjoy the marvelous display technology that didn't even exist until recently. Same goes for the rest of the attributes of the Spectre 13t - an absolute stunner, "category killer," as far as I'm concerned. Obviously, you shouldn't keep a computer with defects or one that displeases you, but in this thread I've observed more people obsessing over non-problems and worrying that there's a possibility that another brand might do something a little bit better. Relax. If you own this wonderful computer, pat yourself on the back. It's the best in its class by quite a margin, especially if you bought it with a coupon. If you're on the fence, go get it - now. Beat HP down on price as much as you like, as that's the way the game is played, but know that even at list price this is pretty much the best deal going in this market segment.

ALL of the above, IMO, of course. ;)

Great post. As I include in my signature block I also have a 4-year old Lenovo W510 that I paid over $2K for at the time. It was the early generation of i7, max RAM, etc, FHD screen (top-of-the-line at the time), discrete graphics, and great battery life with expansion battery (relative to similar power machines). When I bought it I also had a home-built desktop with similar specs (except for having an overclocked C2Quad and a 30" Dell Utrasharp monitor). I sold the desktop and now use the Lenovo for specific tasks. In some ways, especially with the upgraded HD (I have a Seagate hybrid drive that was a huge upgrade), it still seems to outperform the Spectre (probably the quad to dual processor difference) but the Spectre shines as a mobile and travel platform and the screen resolution is fantastics. I am still in search of the optimum scaling solution but the clarity of text, images, even with the Intel 4400 blows the Lenovo FHD screen out of the water (and the Lenovo had rave reviews at the time).

    Hello everybody! First post!

I received my spectre (i7, 8 gig, QHD, 256) a few days ago and had a few questions.

It seems I have a few stuck pixels here and there (maybe 4-5). One of the spots is a strange shape so I imagine it is a few lumped together. Anyway, I have spoken to support and they have said they can change the screen. I wonder if anybody has gone through this? It means sending the machine away to Poland (I'm in Sweden) for 10 days to get serviced. I guess I worry that I'll get it back with something else wrong with it. I'm not sure how careful they are / what changing the screen entails. Plus my return right will expire while its away, not that I want to send it back but I don't feel I should have to live with it on a brand new machine.

Another thing I have noticed is that the wireless card seems to be slower than the one on my old system. The difference is consistently about 15 Mbit/s on an online speed test plugged and in performance mode. Is this just what to expect from the machine or have others here experienced anything similar and managed to speed it up?

Overall it is a fantastic machine though. Definitely feel like I made the right choice.

You raise some very good points. I think that if it was me I would return it for an identical one and only send it in for repair is the second one had an issue. As for the Wifi, did you get the AC card or N card? It could simply be a driver or settings issue. I dumped the HP drivers and am using driver from Intel's site (version 16.10 at the moment). Mine works fine. After uninstalling the HP drivers, you will also have to make sure and remove the PROSet services that get left behind (Intel and HP need to work on their uninstaller) so as to prevent error log entries and possible conflicts.

I agree you should definitely send it back and get a new one. Yours is the first I've heard with dead pixels and I never had to change stock drivers to get excellent performance with my AC wifi card and my N router, which is 2 years old. Still, there can be so many reasons for wifi card/router incompatabilities and you can look to troubleshoot it if the replacement Spectre does the same thing. If it does, you might want to consider replacing your router if it is old, or at least checking to see if you are behind in firmware updates. All in all, small issues but the dead pixel thing is better replaced than messing with repairs.

Are you covered by the same "no questions asked, unconditional" refund in the first 21 days of ownership that HP offers in the US? If you are, or you are, or you are still withing your return/refund period, don't let HP try to talk you into returning it for repair, and don't let them try to get you a "case manager," because they just slow things down and are generally very difficult to deal with, at least the group based in Canada is, could be different in the EU.

    Good luck.

Thank you both for the comments. The refund situation is a little different here in Sweden. As I understand one has 14 days, it is not unconditional and may come with a restocking fee. My having started the computer and used it a little may be enough for them to deny my request although a factory reset probably should do the trick there. I did initiate the repair process when I called them last week but haven't handed the machine over to them yet. I will try to get them to take it back but if not I hope the repair process goes well.

I have the AC card by the way. I don't think they offer anything else on the European models actually. I suppose the router could be the issue but unfortunately it is one of the cable company supplied ones with special firmware that cannot be upgraded.

I'm pretty sure there is an option to flip the behavior in the BIOS, such that they are F keys first, and you need to press Fn to get the multimedia behavior.

    HI Guys

Just loving my i7 Spectre 13 but it has one issue that is annoying...

I hook the HP up to a larger external display via HDMI and it works great but.. on many occasions after just leaving the machine for a period of time (say 15-20 mins) when I come back the external screen is blank (asleep I presume) and I cant wake the HP up - the power light is still on but no matter which buttons I press it wont wake up to either external display or built in screen and I have to hold down the power button until laptop turns off.

The laptops fans appears to be running flat out during this locked up state also?

It doesn't always have this issue but is annoying when it does.

    Any ideas?

    Many Tks

This has happened to be as well! Except I did not have an external displays set up. It wouldn't wake from sleep. It was just stuck and no fan noise for me but pressing keys did nothing for me. I could turn the back light on and off but the screen wouldn't turn on at all. very weird. Maybe a graphics driver issue? Also some reason the WiFi will randomly go into the limited connection crap. I have the AC card however flipping airplane mode on and off seems to solve it easily.
Hopefully all this is remedied with simple driver updates.

Also an Update: this is my 2nd week now owning the spectre. (3rd spectre due to replacements). The image retention seems to be little compared to the last one and I've made my peace with it. Also for anyone that wants to know. The brightness level doesn't seem change how quickly it will IR or how large the retention will be, it just happens.I can live with it knowing that if it does get worse I can call the warranty department and be just fine. Also considering to get the 3 year accidental plan because oh my clumsiness lately. I almost spilled a glass of water on it two days ago, and it was almost knocked off a table by a friend.

The one and only problem HP doesn't seem to address is the Beats Audio volume swing when bass in a song hits you will notice the higher end and overall volume will dip. However the volume thing is a problem for EVERYONE with a Beats Audio laptop.

I'm thinking of buying a nice big SD for my Spectre, specially one of those 128GB fast 80MB/s but... I don't know if the card reader of our laptop will be capable of such speeds...

Do any of you have the chance of getting a FAST SD in your hands to do a speed test with our Spectre? It would be nice to know more about the card reader (speed, if it is USB 3.0, etc...)

Hey, for anyone finding two finger scrolling on their Spectre 13t (and other HP clickpads), I rediscovered a great "helper application" that was developed 4 years ago by someone who hated the HP clickpads of that era - which were little short of horrendous. It was especially developed for the first HP Envy 14, which was a great machine but one of the first implementations of the clickpad by HP and it worked terribly; I should know, I owned 2! This app/driver runs concurrently with the Synaptics driver and I can tell you after using it on many HP laptops over the past 4 years it is robust and does no damage of any kind. The author titled it: Two Finger Scroll Mac Hater Mod! because that first Envy 14 looked as much like a copy of the then-Macbook Pro 13 as the Spectre 13 looks like the MBA and he didn't want a Mac but wanted his Envy to scroll as well.

The only function to pay attention to is the Scrolling tab and you can set both speed and acceleration. You have to fiddle around with the settings of both of these in conjunction with the Synaptics settings for two finger scrolling speed and coasting and there are probably several permutations that will get you to a response that you are looking for. Personally, I find it works best when you turn the Synaptics scrolling speed to about 1/4 and the Synaptics Coasting also to about 1/4. (Can't swear that you even need the Coasting checked at all, but I know mine works great this way. Then you install and launch "Two Fingers" from the link above and just ignore all settings except in the Scrolling tab (don't think any of the others work, but they are Use At Your Own Risk). After lots of experimenting with the Spectre 13t (I've used this on at least 5 different HP clicpads over the years, and each requires different settings for desired results) I find the settings shown on the screen shot below works very well. If you increase the scrolling speed on Two Fingers much beyond the level shown, the thing will fly, but it's hard to control. Same goes for using the "Acceleration" at all.

So, in reprieve, download Two Finger Mac Hater from link above, extract the zip and double click the app and it will appear in your tray. Set your Synaptics two finger scrolling to about 1/4 speed and 1/4 coasting and set the TFMH to about 1/8 or so Speed and uncheck Acceration and use other settings as shown in the picture below. The only other thing to adjust is the General tab in which you can choose to "Launch with Windows" (recommended once you find you like it) and while there is also a Palm rejection setting on that tab I have never found it to have much if any effect. You can also exit out of it on that tab so you can quickly see what it's like with and without it launched. I find with these settings that two finger scrolling is smooth and as fast as you want it to be. I find it more useful to make fine adjustments on the helper app than on the Synaptics driver.

YMMV, but this tool has stood the test of time and I was not very happy with scrolling non W8 apps, including browsers until I remembered this utility and installed it. I hope it works well for you. Do report your results. Of course, if you're very pleased with scrolling as it is, there's no reason to try this, unless you're just curious. It's amazing how good some community drivers are and unlike, say, graphics drivers, this is benign, easily removed, and basically compatible with every HP clickpad I've ever tried it on. For all I know, it works with all Synaptics pads as well.

    Enjoy!

    Jeff

Well I hope the third time is the charm for me, got my third Spectre today and so far so good. The palm rest area is much more sturdy on this one, the previous one I could squeeze easily and the part below the track pad was permanently loose. It really feels like the last one was missing something inside making the computer more rigid. Backlight bleed is basically non existent, still setting it up and need to use it for a bit to make sure there is nothing else wrong.

And this time my Spectre came with a neoprene sleeve like some of you have been getting.

Good for you, Raistlin! It's kind of bizarre the way virtually all notebook PC mfrs these days appear to be shipping out of two different warehouses: 1 with products that went through full QA testing and are essentially great pieces of work and 1 for all the rejects that, instead of returning to production to fix or scrap, they randomly send out to customers! It's not just the Spectre 13t and it's not just HP. Even vaunted Apple threads on Forums like Macrumours show the same thing, except that the problems with Macs are more likely to be prevalent in the majority of units shipped rather than applying only to a portion of its output of a given product line. In other words, the wifi on most MBs over the past 4 years has sucked, even in the most highly praised models such as the last couple of years of MBAs and the rMBPs. Apple has the exclusive ability to ship products with known defects and just gets away with it until finally enough people squeal that they get off their duffs and admit, then fix the chronic design/manufacturing problem!

I hope yours continues to pass your burn-in tests with flying colors - or, better yet, stable colors :D . It's been said quite a bit on this thread but it bears repeating: it appears that the majority of the Spectre 13ts have come off the line as very solid builds with a minimum of serious problems that can't be handled by some savvy advice from other forum members. I have felt guilty at times in hearing the problems of others when my first and only Sp 13t came through built as solid as a tank with perfect lines and near perfect performance in all areas. I was having significant trackpad problems until I finally found just the right adjustments to deal with "flying cursors" and then re-discovering the patch/utility program described in my post just above that has made my trackpad a pleasure to use with smooth, responsive scrolling. (If you are having any problems with your trackpad I can't recommend enough that you try the"Two Fingers" program I describe and link in my post just above.)

I hope HP will keep and expand the Spectre line to include the 13t and the all but stealth marketed 13x2 (hybrid 2-piece tablet/laptop with the 13t's DNA and to expand into 14" models, perhaps even to 15-17" models with quad core cpus and d-gpus to compete head on with the mac rMBP line.

(I happen to also own an HP "Envy 14 Spectre," an excellent piece of kit released in 2012 with SB cpus, refreshed in late 2012 with IB cpus, far better igps, better battery life and much faster SATA III SSDs. Regrettably, the model line seems to have been put out to pasture by 2013 and was overpriced by about $300 for the [short] life of the product line. I was fortunate enough to get a great deal on an open-box unit in early 2013 with a warranty through 2014 and wonderful build, keyboard, audio, 14" display and excellent port selection for an "ultrabook," with full sized gigabit ethernet and HDMI, 2 USB3s and mini DP for 3 monitor arrangement. The Envy 14 Spectre was the model with black gorilla glass lid,GG display and keyboard/trackpad deck that remains pretty much the classiest looking UB yet designed and a track record of excellent build and reliable performance. Kills me to have to part with mine, but the Spectre 13t was my upgrade model as they did not make a 14 with Haswell or a touch screen and now it is time for me to sell the Spectre 14 though I hate to part with it. I think we can all agree that 4 laptops are enough for a single person, no matter how busy he may be ;) Hint: mine is for sale and you can feel free to PM me for details. I'm looking to get around $650 for a machine that listed for $1,495 and performs very close to the Spectre 13t with an i5 cpu except the top screen resolution isK 1600x900 - more than adequate for all tasks and far less reflective than the 13t's screen. End of commercial :D.)

Keep us posted on your success, Raitlin!

Does anyone's unit have an occasionally loud fan? My sister was on her Spectre today and the fan just started kicking off out of nowhere and it was still loud even when the computer was idle. The device is properly placed on a desk and nothing intensive is going on Again, this happened when the computer was idle too. It's an uncontrollable noise and it's super loud. I can hear it over my music playing in the background. It just kicks off out of nowhere and stops whenever it wants to.

Okay I think I have the exact same problem, I thought I might have been oblivious last time, but the bottom part of the trackpad when pressed it dips in, and it rests slightly higher near the bottom as well, you can actually feel the glass edge near the bottom of trackpad. Should I be worried? It seems to function just fine.

I don't think I had the same problem, I was talking about the part of the palm rest that is right below the trackpad (the thin part) that connects to the bottom piece of the laptop. This piece was not put together properly and you could separate the tope piece from the bottom piece.

I have pretty much the same configuration as you got for your sister and I almost never hear the fan, certainly never at all on idle. I have a few thoughts and hopefully you'll get some others, but what you describe is not normal for this model, so you either need to identify an easy fix, or you need a replacement for faulty hardware.

If you search the thread you'll find some earlier owners had some problems and I can't remember exactly what ended them but I haven't read a fan noise complaint in a long time until yours. Worst case, you have a hardware defect and will have to get a replacement. A couple of things to look at: 1) make sure you have the latest BIOS; not sure, but I think a BIOS update at some point helped with fan noise early owners reported. I'd expect yours to be up to date since you just purchased it, but worth a look. 2) If you don't need the performance boost, you can disable Intel Turbo boost by setting maximum processor state to 99% presuming it's now on the default 100%. By dropping off of 100% Turbo Boost is disabled and chances are that fan activity/noise is higher when the cpu is overclocking. I have run mine that way since new and encounter neither performance problems nor fan noise; this may or may not be the reason. That said, you should not have to gimp the cpu in a Haswell Ultrabook to avoid unbearably loud fan noise. If nothing else, try this and see what you learn. 3) Play around with "Coolsense," toggling it on and off and even uninstalling it and see what effect, if any, that has on your fan noise. I'm pretty sure this is a throttling routine that keeps the temps down by throttling the cpu to keep the bottom of the laptop from getting too hot. Stands to reason that turning it on will both keep temps down and minimize need for cooling fan activity. I'm not entirely sure that I don't have it backwards, and that rather than throttling down the cpu to keep cool, it speeds up the fan to get the same result which is why I suggest you experiment with invoking it and disabling it to see if either reduces fan activity.

Again, I don't think you should have to throttle performance or do anything else to compromise performance to keep the fan from raging when the machine is idling, so my suggestions are more for clues than workarounds for a defective thermostatic circuit, if that's the case. One last thing I'll add is that this machine does get quite warm on the bottom after more than, say, 10 minutes of streaming FHD video. While that does not cause my fan to kick in and stay on long after the app is idling, it suggests that freedom from blockage and/or dust blocking the vents is important and though a new laptop should not be clogged with dust and you have indicated you are taking care to place it properly on a surface for ventilation, it's still worth double checking the air flow.

I feel so badly for people who receive product with hardware defects and have to go through return/replace machinations - as mine has been "perfect" from day one - but it's a fact of life tolerances are very tight for these very slim chassis notebooks and, even though the low voltage hardware is less prone to overheating I wouldn't be surprised if 15-20% ship with defects, though perhaps half of them do not create noticeable problems and the other half do. I hope yours can be remedied without having to return the device to HP, but you sound as though you are quite discerning (having read many of your posts here and on TPCR.com) and you may have to endure a return. Overall this is such a fine product and fine value that it is well worth a return or even two because this model appears to have a higher overall satisfaction rate than nearly any new notebook models I've observed over the past several years.

    Good luck and keep posting.

Just a heads up guys: The 13T-3000 is being discounted $250 if configured above $1199. Also, FatWallet offers 5% cash back right now !!! That's pretty much $300 off.
    Coupon code is POWER250

Also, hp website states that the QHD upgrade is free, but I am not getting that discount right now (even before applying the coupon)

An odd issue here. Netflix works just fine when using only the laptop, with both stereo and the DD+ 5.1 audio feeds. I connected the laptop to my receiver/TV via HDMI. I used the control panel to set it to 5.1. Netflix streaming works when the audio selected is stereo. When I select 5.1, I get no audio and the video is a slideshow, 1fps. Any ideas?

Yeah the QHD is working - they added it "silently" when I played with configurations again - I had to deselect to go back to the 1900 option.

My laptop is due to be delivered in Philly Tuesday. I'm considering just calling them back and saying that I am returning it in the 21 day period - because with this $250 discount I can get the higher speced screen and an i7 processor for hte same price I'm paying for the i5/8GB/128MB/1900res configuration.

Has anyone ever been that cheeky with HP? Does it work?

People do it all the time and it often works though sometimes you strike out with the first person and have to call a second time. Also, I say this 5 times a month here, but talk to a supervisor! not a front line phone agent, and don't accept that person asking their boss. You have to speak directly to the person with the authority. In your case they might be developing a policy about this because the discount-on/discount-off status has been the story of this model's short life in the market and HP will surely know that most purchases presently ordered will be returned or otherwise re-ordered to get the bigger discount.

I'm still staggered by how cheap these have become, if the QHD screen is free now and the 20% discount is in effect. Some people get an additional 5-10% off through American Express and another 5% from Fat Wallet or one of these other buying coops. Without doing the math, it sounds like you can buy a top-spec config of the Spectre 13t for as little as $900 after applying all three discounts. That makes it $500-$800 less than every other competing high-spec premium ultrabook, including the MBA and, with the exception of the Asus UX-301, none of the other models have a single feature or a level of quality that materially exceeds the Spectre in any respect. I mean, some may prefer the aesthetics of one vs. another and, I guess, to some the extra 0.3 lbs the Spectre weighs is a real negative (I think it's not only insignificant, but as an owner I'm convinced that every ounce goes into a more solid build) but only the Asus has a beefier Haswell i7 and HD 5100 Iris - for $800 more!

I wonder if HP will lead a landslide on pricing in this market segment. I really don't see how anyone who doesn't have money to burn buys the Asus, Samung Ativ 9, Acer S7, Dell XPS 13, Toshiba Kirabook or even Sony Pro 13 (which is a different story too, as it is a good 0.5 lb lighter, but also full of quality problems and sold by a company who will exit the business in 2 months!). Whether HP can make money at these prices is probably irrelevant because the name of the game for now is market share and brand identity, and the whole hierarchy of brands of premium notebooks has done a backflip in the past 2 years. Consider: 2 years ago the king of the hill was Sony, with its 2.5 lb SVZ13, that had an Ivy Bridge quad core mobile i7 cpu, a 1080p TN screen and sold for $2,199 with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. Acer was considered the lowest of the low in terms of quality and performance, and it was widely believed that no Windows laptop - Ultrabook or otherwise - would ever come near the quality or design excellence of the MBA 13 whereas every model I named above, plus the Spectre 13, is arguably as well designed and made as the MBA, but all have FHD, QHD or QHD+ displays arguably making them more valuable than the MBA unless you gotta have OSX or you really need 11 hours of battery life on your laptop, because 8-9 just won't do!

When you look at the high end of the markets for these laptops and likewise for smartphones and tablets, they've all matured and new models are just getting sleeker and cheaper with no meaningful functional improvements from one year to the next. Consumer hardware technology badly needs Steve Jobs to come back from the grave and invent some new product forms and categories to make it worth the trouble to pull out your credit card and buy new stuff. :p

    Hello All,

I am debating between this UB and the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro....I am currently leaning towards the Spectre....I have read around 100 pages of this thread so far and have yet to actually find a definitive answer to this question....I am debating between the FHD and QHD screens....I have had an opportunity to see the FHD at Best Buy and it's gorgeous...However, it seems with the QHD being a free upgrade right now, it would be wise just from a future proofing/resale perspective. My worry is the QHD will not display Netflix and Youtube HD videos properly because of the resolution being so high....I streamed Netflix and HD Youtube on a QHD Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro at Best Buy and they both appeared "jagged" and lower quality then the Spectre with the native FHD screen. Can anyone who owns the QHD screen comment on the quality of video from Netflix/Youtube HD or even personal home video taken with a smartphone? Also, can anyone comment on the type of screen either of them are (TN vs. IPS)? This is important to me as this would comprise quite a bit of my use. Im not overly concerned with the Chrome issues because I can just use IE or Forefox if need be. I appreciate any and all feedback you can give me regarding the screen comparisons!

Do you have to call? (rather than chat or email) I'm assuming there is some sort of reference number in the box that I'll need to quote? I know it sounds stupid - but I'm doing this long-distance - I'm in NZ - the laptop will be with my brother in Philly and I'm not arriving there until later in April. So if I'm gonna have to bounce it back to them I'll have to call without having touched the laptop!

I don't have a feel for how many purchasers actually hang out on forums like this. I guess many don't - otherwise they'd be forever dealing with returned units surely? And I agree the price -was good even at full price compared to the Spectre's competitors.

Oddly enough this will be my 3rd HP laptop in a row. I needed a rugged 14" laptop to take camping and off-road in Australia in 2006 and I bought a refurbished HP then (no idea what model now). That did very well over very rough roads, and on the strength of it's performance I bought a Probook 4510S in 2009 in Australia. That's near the end of it's life now - but it's been my full-time business laptop the whole time I've had it and the only money I've spent on it was a new battery a couple of years ago.

I noticed HP lost their reputation for a bit too - but now I can see that they are pushing hard for the portable business travel market with this.

Note in non-US markets the pricing is very different - the i5/4GB/256MB can be had in NZ for very best price from the distributor for US$1500!

just ordered the spectre with the i7, 8gb ram, 256gb, and 2560x1440 screen for $1192.12, but I am wondering if the 128gb would have been plenty for me, (and save $150) since I am just using it for writing, browsing and some lite design work. How much space is left on the 128gb to begin with?

I would just stay with the 256, I had a 128 in my last laptop and if you don't pay attention it can start to fill up easily. And with an SSD (if I am correct) you don't want the free space to get too low.
