It's definitely defective. I'm using one right now and the test button produces the normal test sound as any other laptop or headphone.

I'm wondering if anyone with the latest Kaby Lake model have used a different charger with the x360? I know the old x360 didn't allow charging by third party chargers, but I heard it's allowed now? Also is it bad for the laptop to be charging with something with a lower output (ex. 29W one for the Macbook) and or something with a higher power output (ex 87W for MBP)? Would love to share a charger with gf's Macbook so we don't need to bring both.

Something weird I've noticed.
I've charged my laptop the kaby lake one to 100% .. shut it off.. and remove the charger that was at 12am..
at 10am i turn the laptop on.. and battery is at 93% wtf -
I put up a review of the Kaby Lake model here, if anyone is interested: http://www.ultrabookreview.com/13875-hp-spectre-x360-review-2/

good review.. as the battery discharge rate, did you check the hp battery check and advance information to see if anything is listed in there?
have some good info on the battery from what i see -
Picked up the new x360 tonight.. All it does it constantly run the fans.. very annoying.. I can't take this machine seriously if it's going to constantly run the fans even when it's in the 40c range. It will only turn the fans off if I literally stop using the computer :/ Such a shame really because it's a nice machine and made well.. and the perfect size. It is very fast but i'm pretty annoyed by the fact the fan just churns constantly when plugged in.. It's more behaved when unplugged, despite the power plans being the same.
Probably going to return it to Best Buy based on the fan "issue". Probably designed to have an aggressive fan since it doesn't take much for this thing to get into the 80s and low 90s.. Just installing Windows updates got it to the 85c temp range.
Config is i7 Kaby, 16gb, 512gb ssd. -
I got my replacement today... from hp Canada.
I will be turning both back.
the fist one with the video posted the screen clicks.. but something strange.
I was setting up my new one today.. and the older one was off, with the plug plugged in, fully charged.. all you could hear was coil whine and noise.. I thought it was my new one, so I shut it off. put my ear to both.. and the old one fully charged plugged in was going crazy with noise.. I unplugged it and noise went away.. I've never had a laptop ever do that.
The new one though all is good.. the whites are very warm and yellowish compared to the other one.. I put them side to side even though they have the me LED panel but whites are not whites. -
-
I tried all 3 BIOSes available from HP and all act the same.. This is unfortunate.. Because the unit actually cools very well and this type of fan behavior is not needed.
Comparing to the XPS 13, the XPS 13 fan will remain off until about 80c then it kicks on and the moment you stop a benchmark/cpu intensive activity it will immediately turn back off.
Edit: I want to add that the fan issue is really a problem when you're charging.. The fan wants to keep going pretty much all the time even though Windows profile is set to passive cooling while plugged in. While on battery doing normal web browsing, even firing up my VM on it seems to stay pretty cool around 40c or lower. Fan never turns on in most situations.. But once it DOES turn on, is the issue.. It just won't turn off unless you get back down to somewhere in the 30c range. -
I'd have to disagree. This wasn't something mentioned in Lisa's review of the laptop unlike the Lenovo yoga 910 where she made specific mention of it.

I don't recommend the new Spectre x360 until HP fixes the EC bios. -

well this sucks.

the last few pages are from people that have the new kaby lakes.. lots of battery drain while the laptop is off. -

the XPS I returned suffered from the same issue, losing battery when off.
I had to hold the power button down for 10 seconds to make sure it was off , after reading reports but it went back to dell.
so far the asus I picked up today from bestbuy is the only one that isn't losing battery power when off. -
-
This one..
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-q3...lid-state-drive-black/5562300.p?skuId=5562300
the screen is not as bright as the HP, which could be a negative to some.. I don't mind.. and the speakers not as loud.. but so far so good.
I need to test the battery life and see ..
The one issue I didn't have with the spectre,, was fan noise.. it rarely came on .. more so when the charger was on in the first 20 minutes . but again I wasn't stressing the system.Diversion likes this. -

Where'd you find the deal for the xps?

I was still debating to keep this notebook, but i finally sent it back. keeping the asus for sure.
the HP man, woah.. when the laptop is off, and fully charged and the adapter still plugged in... the LAPTOP makes some weird noise. buzzing, whining, coil noise.
It is audible in a quiet room and a so/so room... I thought it was the adapter cause usually some charge adapters make that noise.. i was so wrong.

Anyone know if the SSD is user replaceable? My 18 month old Spectre 360 is starting to display symptoms of an imminent SDD failure.
Regards, Jim -
Though I was intrigued to try one more..
So i bought two lol put them on my credit card.
and guess what they do once they reach 100% ?
they buzz, make some f'k up noise that scared the living crap of me.. After the samsung note 7 fiasco and hearing those noises i thought the battery was going to blow up.
I unplugged the charger noise went away.
( this was with it in use and on )
So after i tested both of them off, charged them to 100% same f'ing noise when the light turned white indicating it is fully charged.
I contacted HP support on twitter lol they told me it is defective.. i said all that it tried... and still waiting for a response .
I have all the laptpops here, will take a video of the issue -
So I just got a new Samsung KS8000 TV and I'm curious if the x360 skylake spectre outputs the full 4k 60hz? Trying to figure out if it's my cable or just the laptop that is limited. Anyone have any experience with outputting full 4k 60hz 4:4:4 video? Thanks.
-
-
What response are you waiting for from HP?
What was the send-in process like for your initial Hp Spectre X360? Did HP offer to repair or replace your machine or were you able to get a full refund? -
-
I told them the issues.
the one tech that was helping me out verified it on a test unit.
hp on twitter told me " it is defective " when I told them I have four on my desk with the same issue .. they never replied back -
I'm having the same problem with my new X360. I'm on my second unit. Both units have the weird buzzing and crackling when charging. It's not super loud but noticeable in a quite room. The floor model at Best Buy had the same issue. Is it possible that all the units have the same problem.

Has anyone here tried using Adobe Premiere Elements on a Spectre x360? The one thing keeping me from considering any 2in1 is the i7 dual processors (vs. quad core) for video editing of 1080p videos.
Thanks -
For other users experiencing that their fan is spinning to aggresive can try to set "System cooling policy" to passive even when plugged in. Its done under Power Options - Change plan settings (Your power profile) - Change advanced power settings - Processor power management - System cooling policy.
Another tip to keep the fan from spinning up and to save battery is to run windows 10 battery saver function already from 100%, that way background updates etc are on hold until the system gets plugged in again

I would like to have a stylus to my Skylake x360, but the Dell Active Stylus (750-AAGN) seems to be close to impossible to get hold of without paying a huge premium.
Is there any, not discontinued, alternative? -
@JaQoB There is also an equivalent acer pen but those are rare as hens teeth as well. I picked up my AAGN via ebay a couple months ago and it wasn't that much of a premium

There is a review on the HP page http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/Laptops/hp-spectre-x360---13-w063nr-x7v22ua-aba It says that eGPU support is disabled for the thunderbolt 3 ports Can someone confirm that?

Is there a trick to removing the bottom cover, other than getting at the two screws under the two rear feet? I removed them all but there seems to be something holding it down in the middle at the front. I tried peaking through a gap and it almost seemed as if there was a component attached to the bottom cover itself, but that doesn't make any sense.
My reason for opening it up in the first place is to get at some creaking at the right palm rest, and also trying to fix a misalignment with the left hinge as it's crooked and can sometimes scrape against the screen when converting to tablet. Not sure if the screen hinge attachments allow for any kind of adjustment though... -
-
try this one... it's apparently the same (although I haven't tested it myself): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Acer-Aspire...281491?hash=item5d613c0353:g:Kq8AAOSw~bFWJ~ek

I picked up the Kaby Lake x360. So far I'm liking and my only complaints thus far is the fan and the heat. I'm curious to know what others are getting for SSD read and write speeds. I have the 512GB SSD version and on Crystal Disk Mark I'm getting 3200 MB/s (read) and 1600 MB/s (writes). I've run this test multiple times and it's reproducible. This is very different than what I've been reading from online reviews where most reviews are getting writes of 1200 MB/s and 400 MB/s reads. I checked the drive and apparently what I have is the Samsung PM961 and not the PM951. Seems most review units even the 512GB ones used the PM951 drives too. Perhaps I got lucky and got one with the PM961. What drives are folks with the 512GB getting?

The first time I sent the laptop in, the repair center didn't seem to follow my step-by-step instructions to replicate the problem, or at least they never reached out to me and said they were unable to replicate it. The laptop came back with the bottom cover bowed and not attached to the laptop correctly, which one would hope even a cursory QC would catch. The second time, after being contacted by the "escalations team", they kept my laptop for three and a half weeks before sending it back with a replaced screen. Of note, the speakers are below the keyboard, so this repair was especially baffling. Also, between the first and second returns, they insisted on sending me new packaging even though I already had the returns packaging in hand and just needed a new shipping label, delaying my repair even further.
Throughout this time, the repair center never contacted me to let me know they were having problems replicating my problem or that they had replicated it and fixed the problem, and the escalations case manager called me every 2 days for 3 weeks to tell me he had no information.
Anyway, this is a longwinded way of saying that if you buy a new Spectre x360 and it appears to have problems out of the box, I recommend you return it immediately and just get another. The support team was not effective at addressing my problem, and I was without a functioning laptop for an extended period of time. I genuinely hope that I just got a lemon since so many reviews were gushing about the sound quality, but either HP's repair group is totally broken, or most reviewers' idea of good sound quality is an earbud speaker filled with sand and turned up loud. -
As far as I know HP doesn't repair directly their product. They outsourced the repairs and support, for example, here in Italy the phone support is from Belgrad (Serbia). Many phone operators (women) talks not so good my language, sometimes they don't understand me.
The repairs are made by Flextronics, an american company, which has one of their repair lab in Hungary, Gyal.
I bought my Spectre x360 in september, and I've been not so lucky. I've got a Spectre x360 with defective hinge, misaligned and everytime I was opening and closing the display a strange crick sound came from the hinge.
Plus I had problems with screen: when on battery and Intel power saving option "panel self refresh" was on, randomly the screen was turning to black and flickering for a fraction of second.
I sent it to repair after 2 months, and after 1 months and 6 days they shipped the repaired Spectre.
They replaced the whole screen plus the two hinges and the wifi card.
The technician at Flextronics wasn't able to assembly the bottom cover correctly, I've received it not correctly assembled.
Plus, the display lid has a misalignment of 1 mm with the bottom chassis.
It's not causing any issue, but I was expecting more professional repairs considering the type of product.wondercow likes this. -

Does anybody know the actual charging voltage for the 13-w0xx model? (Kaby lake). The adapter itself supports 5/9/10/12/15/20V so I can't really tell from that, unless I splice the cable and use a DVM to measure it directly. I suppose it might change as well depending on whether it's fast charging or not. Thanks!

guys, anyone of you having power problems with it? I have 3 set of 13-4005dx. i7-5500u,8Gb, 512Gb (PM951) that's a i7 QHD with 512gb. all of them have a burnt resistor on the mainboard. so basically the battery is not charging even thou the AC is plugged in. all 3 have been burnt out before. but 2 of them have burnt out again. the 3rd set this time I slapped out lots of thermal pad and used the aluminium backplate as a heat sink and used liquid metal pro for the CPU. so far the 3rd unit is holding well. but when charging the batt and doing some simple renderings. the area on the mainboard in charge of regulating the power is quite hot. almost as hot as the CPU.
so that means I have burnt 5x 13-4005dx.
let me explain this. I have 1 and my 2 other staff has it also, on top of their zbooks. we occasionally use our spectre to do davinci resolve video editing. ironically 3 times, spectre burnt when we were using davinci. the other 2 when we were using premiere pro.
when it burns out. it usually goes with a pop. like when you plug in the AC power into the wall socket and it arcs.
the problem is the spectres only have 1 year warranty. and 2 of them popped during it's 2nd year.
