The touchpad is made by ALPS, a japanese component supplier.
When I demoed the dm3, the touchpad was definitely a negative to me. The pad RESISTS finger movement, and feels much like running a finger across a pane of window glass - tacky and constantly pulling at your fingers. This is probably due in part to the super-glossy texture they put onto the pad surface. I'm sure you could get used to using the pad, but in the initial impression the surface choice seems less ergonomical than it should be. Regardless, the shiny chrome surface of the pad looked gorgeous, and accents the brushed metal well. While I think making the pad matte and more similar to the palm rest would have worked well better in the overall design, the shininess does add that little flair to the surface. I didn't demo multi touch functionality, but hearing from various users on these forums, the drivers seem buggy in Windows 7. I consider the touchpad to be the only error on the otherwise well-thought layout.
If you're concerned with the smoothness of the trackpad, I recommend looking at skinstyler.com . The site sells touchpad covers for all laptops by letting you choose the dimensions of your touchpad (which I've confirmed to be 85mm x 40mm on the dm3.) I have an order on the way from them right now, and I'll be sure to drop off a review of the covers when they arrive.

This happens all the time, companies do shipping labels online, but it doesnt get picked up for a few days.
I ordered a DM3 last week, waiting for it to come in. Just catching up on this thread.
One question...who has tried the quick boot Non-Windows web GUI? Does it work well, does it use less power? Thanks -
Wow, well this is the place to get dm3 info.
I am trying to decide between the SU7300 and the SP9300, both with the 105M. Anyone know what kind of hit does battery life takes with the SP9300? Are both processors ULV? On paper the difference in speed seems huge, but I wonder if its really all that much. I need my PC to be up for long hours writing (at least 4 on battery), average gaming, and some graphics programs like photoshop and ArcGIS.
Also, does anyone know the bus speed of the DDR3 in the dm3t? I can't find any more details on this memory anywhere on HP's site.
much appreciated -
Ever heard of the edit button? You should consolidate the information back into one post... then I will dignify it with a response.(I'm only partly kidding... lol)

The approximation for the SU7300 + G105 seems to be about 6 hours. The SP9300 seems to be 4-5 hours, but we're not sure yet. We should know by the end of this week when everyone gets their dm3z/t's in the mail. -

THe more I look the more confusing it sems.. so is this one
http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/328626/HP-Pavilion-dm3-1030us-13-3/#
a better deal than
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pa...ento/9556358.p?id=1218123847359&skuId=9556358
Just roughly looking seems that the OD model has more ram and has 50 bucks rebate over the BB model. I know there are 3 level of CPUs but neither listing shows which one. Though probably the lowest I'm sure.
And thE office depot is LED too right? or the DM3 only sports LED? and it looks like office depot's return policy is NO return on all computer, exchange in 14 days only -

HD youtube seems great, but what are your experiences with HD Hulu, especially those with L335/3200 dm3s?
I am finding confusing results...
I believe this Hulu video is 720p:
http://go.notebookreview.com/?id=525X832&url=http://www.hulu.com/hd/48731
Unless my eyes are fooling me, it plays even smoother than the 480p stargate and house episodes i tried on Hulu (they were watchable Fullscreen, but i could detect a certain lack of smoothness)
In the popped out 1280 x 720 frame the 720p Hulu Video ("legend of the seeker" or something...) played PERFECTLY. And full screen, on LOW quality i'd say it was nearly perfect. 720p plays better than 480p in Hulu??? (Note, this is all based on my observations watching it...not scientific comparisons) -

dm3 owners, could you please leave a screenshot of the hardware manager deployed, so that it is possible to see the exact nature (vendor and model) of all of the hardware present? Especially for webcam, touchpad, sound card, wlan controller, and card reader. This is for seeking the compatibility of this hardware with linux.

I'm receiving my laptop today. I tried to go to skinstyler.com but all I see is mac stuff.

OLED offers the best blacks and lowest power use however they are still extremely expensive and basicly aren't offered past phone sizes
Plasmas offer the the next best blacks but have the highest power usage and are the next most expensive
LCDs offer the cheapest cost but the bad blacks and are normaly thicker , they don't use as much power as plasma but are pretty close
LED LCDs get rid of the back light and replace with leds so power consumption is greatly reduced. The offer blacks almost on par with plasma and oled .
Basicly at this point in time the LED price premium will be reduced or wiped out over time if you plan on using your monitor for a few years. 40% less power usage will easily wipe out that $100 price premium after 3 years or so.
At this point wait till cyber monday or black friday , its about a month away. -

Alright, more Hulu testing on the L335/3200:
All Hulu plays perfect on Hulu page in High Quality (360p-720p)
Hulu appears to play perfectly popped out and maximized (that's big, but not quite full screen)
All Hulu (including low res) seems to be less than perfectly smooth in Full screen on High Quality (though it is definitely watchable, i just detect that it isn't super smooth!)
Hulu (even 720p) plays close to perfect Full screened on Low quality.
Strangely...it still strikes me that the HD shows play even smoother than the Hi-Res shows, but i have to be wrong on that point.
Others please add your conclusions, i am sure there are people who want this info to make a purchasing decision and I don't want them deciding on my experience alone. -
Also regarding the touch-pad:
I was innitially very dissappointed by the touchpad...felt like my finger could barely move. BUT i don't know if i just got used to using the right amount of pressure or what, but i don't really mind it. It works just fine for me now.
Has anyone else found the same thing? -

Hi Guys,
This thread has been very useful, here is my dilema, I am on a strict budget and need to choose one of these configurations.
AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB) w/512MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 4330 Graphics with FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
or
AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB) with ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics with 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
This will be my daily commuter to school, I use Word, Powerpoint, and Filemaker Pro, with the occasional Photoshop. I have a HP DV9500t (160gb 5400 RPM) and since I upgraded to Windows 7 the boot time is excellent. Battery life is not an issue because the are power outlets everywhere. Also may not use battery at all to save weight. Heat is also an issue, my DV9500t is hot as a nuclear reactor even with extra notebook fan.
Please let me know what you think and why? Don't be afraid to get technical.
Thanks for your help. -

By the way Office depot deal is better with more ram than bestbuy model and has 50 rebate, but after searching their return policy is NO RETURN exchange for same item only and often time has horror story even then, just google it.. Im eyegballing the bestbuy one.. less hassel and no return restocking fee for me...
can you test Youtube HD MKV and other movie trailer in HD>? -

Any of the 9300/g105m's arrived yet?
give us your first thoughts ASAP , people..! -
Hey guys, did anyone opt for the 500gb 5400 rpm hard drive over the 320gb 7200 rpm hard drive? I was thinking that if battery life and heat is an issue, wouldn't the lower rpm HD be better? Also, would the increased data density of the 500gb actually make data retrieval faster than the 320gb at 7200?
-
-
just got my su7300/g105m build, have to work today but i will get some game demos running as well as i want to post sisoft sandra cpu benchmarks (hoping to compare with the amd processor)
edit:
sandra arithmetic 5.93 gflops 8.01 gips
multi media - 13.89 mpixels 19.66 mpixels
comparing to the mv40 (single core amd version) it got significantly higher, though it doesnt have the dual core ones to compare too, so if someone could post results that would be cool. -
OK, ive been playing with my dm3 with turion and 4330 for the last hour or so. Throughly impressed with the build quality and the looks. Love the keyboard, the trackpad has a small amount of friction to it.
Tired playing youtube HD video of metallica's orion and it played very well. PLayed a trailer of 2012 1080p quicktime and that also played well with no skipping, but will slight motion blur. Hulu hd of the Legend of the Seeker played perfectly in full. This was all played with ati 4330.
Ive also been playing around with the switchable graphics and it works like a charm. The fan noise, however, is much more noticeable while on the 4330 than on the igp.
Overall I love this laptop. -
hey if you could do a favor and download sisoft sandra http://www.sisoftware.net/
and compare results with mine above that would be great
looking at getting some game tests tonight like fear demo, arkham asylum demo, bioshock demo etc. in also.
Just ran the quake 4 demo, all high settings 2xaa and got 50+fps constant -
Anyone got suggestions for improving battery time on this?
-
re5 1280x720 everything high dx 10 13.7 dx9 15.4

I just did a CS:S benchmark at Native Resolution 1366x768, everything on High... 100.7 FPS with my 4330 enabled. Shouldn't have a problem running any source games on this bad boy!
So far, I love the keyboard.
I find the trackpad to be very so-so. It is too grippy and the two-finger scroll doesn't always work. Sometimes I'll go to scroll up and it doesn't register that I have two fingers down, and it'll shoot my mouse across the screen instead. It's kinda frustrating.
Also, I noticed that the bottom of the laptop heated up pretty quickly and hasn't cooled down. I don't think I could have this on my laptop for extended periods of time even idling... But it is charging the battery right now, and laptops always heat up whenever the battery is charging, so maybe that's an issue. I will post later what I find. -

Thanks for the HD viewing....hopefully the HD 3200 HD viewing experience won't be too far off from the ATI 4330...
So is it pretty safe to say the laptop is pretty quiet with HD 3200 IGP and slightly louder due to the heat from a dedicated card? -

Currently, Flash doesn't take advantage of the GPU. It will soon. So Hulu HD won't be a problem for any dm3 model soon.
I tried playing Hulu HD, and it was "watchable" if you don't mind some stuttering. Again, this will improve when flash is updated. -

apparently arithmetic they are pretty close but multimedia far apart -
Cant agree more with youMy TV aint all that bad either.. its a 50" Samsung plasma which produces really nice colors. With my previous dell XPS m1330 it use to show better colors than the original colors on laptop. But in this case, the TV's brightness is very low compared to the brightness on the lappi.
