The space bar on mine doesn't rattle, but it does make a different, slightly noisier sound than the near-silent keys do.

That's some insane lighting. I seriously doubt it would be this extreme. But again, we'll see. If it turns out that the ms store machine is not actually black, it would prove to be one of the most exotic lighting schemes or blatant Photoshop jobs of the decade.

ok ok, not that hard to change the color, but let's just say it would be one of the bolder misrepresentations of the past decade. That accurate enough?

I ordered the 'black' DM3 today from the Microsoft store. Scheduled to get it on Wednesday, will post a note about the color then.

I know some people would like the black, but the brushed silver is very nice, more so in person. It's funny, because the alter laptop, Asus vt30, people were complaining of only having the black option, and now the silver came out. But I guess it's just a matter of preference.

The silver finish here is very nice looking, I really just want to get a good look at how a black dm3 would look in person.

Has anyone found a fix for the touchpad problems out of sleep? I know that if I'm patient, the touchpad seems to warm up to things and get to the point where it's working as usual, but that's kind of a pain. Also, it seems the touchpad wants a larger surface area placed on it before it recognizes movement out of sleep.

Also, I am curious to know how this configuration runs.
    SU4100 1.3Ghz
    4GB ddr3
    4500mhd
    320gb 7200rpm

I wish it had the SU7300. Let me know if the SU4100 performs to your expectations. I am coming from a T5300 with 1.73 ghz c2d

Well, I haven't gotten the chance to really play with it yet, but the brushed aluminum looks nice (although I was hoping it would be black), the notebook itself feels solid, it feels a little lighter than my MacBook, and it fits well inside my MacBook's Tucano Second Skin sleeve case.

(My current notebook is a 13-inch MacBook, and before that, I was using a 12-inch PowerBook.)

    and almost no bloatware?
sounds nice. too bad it's not black..

btw, is that the default background on your dm3?

Does anybody know why HP is no longer offering the Intel SP9300 with the dm3t series? (I can´t find it in the processor section of the customize page of HP.com)

No idea (I know, so helpful), but whatever the reason I hope it has to do with supply constraints or something like it as opposed to not cutting into the envy 13 product line.

They used to offer a much less expensive add on blue ray drive for 125.00 as well, that option disappeared quick.

It's either because they figured out it was cannibalizing Envy 13 sales...and other systems considering the small package + high performance.

Or they're about to slip in an i5 CPU.

Man, I really hope they do. If they don't offer an SP9300+ equivalent CPU looks like I'm have to look at the DV4. Maybe they'll release a DM4? We should know by the end of CES I imagine.

The performance difference between SU4100 and SU7300 is too small to notice for a human being.

Normal usage will run fine, even with a SU2300. (that's what I have in my DM1)

For the general experience of performance the HDD performance is more important than the CPU.

    SU4100 beats the T5300 slightly.

That's odd. I believe that is the background on espresso design laptops.

I doubt HP is going to put in a i5. It'd be amazing, but I think HP would market them in more "premium" laptop lines.

    Just a quick question:
What temperatures are you guys getting for the motherboard?
After playing audiosurf on max settings at native resolution for a while, my mobo temperatures were in the upper 60s. Even went up to 70 C for a few seconds.

foolish mistake . The 4330 will be bottlenecked by teh cpu. However the 3200 is seriously underpowered and the 4330 on this computer will out run the 3200 in any game.

If you want to compare we can do so. I have the l625 with 3 gigs of ram and the 4330

I just got my hp dm3-1044nr from microsoft. I am trying to lock the touchpad (since I use a mouse) and or access the settings for it but I don't know where to go. Please advise.

I know there is a button over the touchpad that supposedly locks it, but when I press it nothing changes. The color does not change and the touchpad does not work!? What is going on? Is this laptop messed up?

ok it was a driver issue. hp tech support troubleshooted it. on second thoughts the computer is very aesthetically nice but the trackpad does suck! i have a usb mouse i use most of the time.

what are the tweaks to make it better that have been discussed on this forum?

    SP9300 is back. I guess they won't be adding an I5. :(

But it is cheaper to upgrade to it, back to the original $250 as opposed to the $350 they were asking a week ago.

On the DM3Z customization sheet they re-added the 128GB SSD option that was missing (anyone know what model this SSD is?) and are now offering a series of dual-band wifi cards, nice. They also re-added the Blu-Ray drive that was missing.

No, no, don't get me wrong. I fully agree that the 4330 outperforms the 3200 in every way (except battery life). But I don't plan to play the latest hardware-demanding games like CoD:MW2 to warrant the extra power, nor do I expect flawless performance on the few games I do play. I'm a college student and I just don't have the time, nor the money that I used to have in high school to keep up with the cutting edge of gaming. I now only play older/casual games, which the HD 3200 has been handling very well so far.

The fact that I got to get 1GB more RAM, a +1800RPM hard drive upgrade, wireless N + bluetooth, and still payed less than what I would've for an L625/4330 configuration with less ram, a slower HDD, and less wireless connectivity, speaks for itself. Outside of gaming, the HD 3200 has no problem handling the Windows 7 OS and plays HD movies without a hitch. I also wholeheartedly believe that my current configuration handles everyday tasks better than the L625/4330/3GB RAM/320GB-5400RPM HDD/Wireless G build I would've gone for, had I wanted some extra eye candy and an emptier wallet.

At the end of the day, if you have the money to pay for more expensive configurations, then more power to you (literally). But I do believe that I got the best bang for my buck and that my decision was prudent.

    On an unrelated note:
I followed your advice and stuck with Windows 7 instead of reformatting to Windows XP (32-bit), and I'm glad I did. I hated the Vista experience so I swore I'd be sticking with XP until 2014, but Windows 7 has definitely won me over. Thanks for stopping me from wasting my time with XP :p

Anyone play around with the "Fan Always On" option in the Bios? Is this dangerous to turn off? Won't it help battery life if the fan is unnecessary?

^it'll help battery life, how much i don't know. if you turn it off it'll only kick in when it gets hot enough (no idea when, you can't view the settings), so less ambient whirring sound, too. My laptop got pretty uncomfortably hot when i turned it off, so i left it on, but i ended up undervolting it and turning fans off and I'm fine with it now.

I would get HWMonitor (google it) and check out your temps before/after turning it off. From there decide what you want to do.

Personally, I'm now running this old HP business laptop with a Pentium M at 1.6ghz. For the past few years my dad was using it with the option off in the BIOS and it's still running like a charm. But I checked the temps and with it on the CPU is at 33C but with it off it goes up to 45 average. So I turned it on all the time, figure the CPU is more comfortable at the lower temp....

Regarding battery life, pretty sure 7 has an option in the power settings for cooling to be passive/active. So you can turn it on in the bios and have it as passive when on battery, it should work but you'll have to try for sure.

I bought my DM3 at Walmart in December (Athlon model with 4GB memory), and I've only run into one issue. I have a Kensington wireless USB mouse that gives me issues almost every time I plug it in. Depending on which USB port I use it will either show up as an HID compliant mouse and work fine, or as a USB input device and not work at all. If I then go and disable it, then re-enable it, it will work until I suspend again. If I uninstall and reinstall it will show up as a mouse, but only until I suspend the computer, in which case it goes back to being a faulty USB input device.

I would just keep using the USB port that shows it as a mouse (the first one on the left if that matters), except now that one appears to suffer from this same problem.

I had read about the touchpad having issues with suspend and have turned off multitouch just in case, but still can't figure out this USB mouse problem. Has anyone else ran into this issue? Any ideas on how to fix it?

I see youre dm3-1035 lacks the wwan antenna wiring aswell as my dm3-1050.
Have you tried with a short antenna or haven´t you gotten to the wwan adventure yet? A sierra mc8775 + short antenna is in the mail from Hongkong, and im a bit worried about the reception level, in the bottom of the laptop.

I have a question and I need someone to answer me as soon as possible. I am planning to order this laptop tomorrow morning from amazon.com. They have two models one is dm3-1030us and the other is dm3-1040us. I was wondering what the difference between both is and which one you would recommend.

The 1030 is amd and the 1040 is intel. The 1030 will have better graphics performance but run a bit hotter and have shorter battery life. The intel has better battery life and runs cooler but won't do as well with games. I'd go for intel unless you plan on doing light gaming.

You might want to get it from the microsoft store. Cheaper than amazon and lots less bloatware. If either had the su7300 instead of the su4100 I'd probably get one.

It looks like a new Winflash BIOS has appeared at HP's site for AMD processor versions of the DM3. Version F.22 A is now listed as the current version, where previously it was F0A A. Today was the first time I've seen it listed, though it's dated 12-2009.

Anyone have an idea what the new BIOS addresses? There's no notes that I could find at HP's site.
