    Just a custom intel machine.
Off the top of my head, near identical specs as the 1040 just marketed by microsoft.

Just an update in case anybody comes looking for an answer to a similar issue. I replaced my Buffalo router with a new Linksys dual band 802.11n issue, and my Atheros card was able to immediately access my wired computers. Apparently just an incompatibility between that Atheros AR9285 and the Buffalo Nfiniti router.

On a positive note, my connection speed went from 65Mbps using 802.11n to 150Mbps on the new router. Faster then the built on ethernet when hard wired. I only selected the b/g standard card for my DM3Z custom build, but got the N instead.

I have that configuration, and because I could only get games downloaded onto it through Steam, the most recent game I tried was Portal, and that ran fine on max settings. No idea about anything more recent though.

and how are the temperatures from the cpu/gpu with the sp9300/105m config when gaming?

i know that the HDD's get very warm underneath the palmrest, but what about the chips themselves? do they create an uncomfortable amount of heat?

i think it's pretty good with heat from my experience. i dont have exact temperatures, but it's not hot at all, just warm, nothing uncomfortable.

now, i think my audio card is starting to crackle/spit a bit more than before ... so do we know if this is a hardware issue or a driver/software issue?

I have no exact temps, but while gaming, the laptop will feel warm, but not really hot.

I will say this though, that fan will blow, and you will notice it. Headphones are a nice counter though. :p .

i did some reading up on this, does it have anything to do with Win7 "intelligent throttling of the CPU" settings in the BIOS ? that's reportedly the issue that many people on forums have said once they turn it off, the crackling on their laptops (of various makes and models) is eliminated ... can anyone confirm/deny?

    and yes i quoted myself

I have an AMD l625 with 4330 and my battery life is 2 hours with normal usage (low brightness, browsing and wireless, 'power saver'). Apparently I have 13% battery wear. Also, my battery will wear when in hibernate. Surely this battery life is absolutely , is there anything I can do?

I don't think that undervolting or anything is something I should have to do. I should have at least 3 hours surely!

voltages will differ for each individual unit. Here are the ones that work for me (L335):
    http://picasaweb.google.com/theflowofchi/Voltages#

One other thing i had to do was change, in the management settings, the p-states-transitions method to "perform single-step transitions only" else i would get random crashes when changing states.

@kushty you should call the HP Support and get a new battery.

Yeah, that seems too low. I was testing battery life yesterday, got a solid 3 hours and half with power saver mode, 50% brightness, wifi on, and normal browsing (~10 tabs)with a few youtube videos(no hd).

I had the battery drain while hibernating issue also on my last dm3, and I tried to get HP to send me one, but they just told me some bs, said it was 'normal'.

How many have the 7200rpm hard drive? If you do, how's the vibration issue?
    and

    HP DM3-1044NR Owners,

What kind of battery results have you been getting with your new laptop? I have done a clean install of Windows 7, and can't seem to get more than 5:30 hours of battery life out of this machine on the lowest brightness setting in power saver mode while doing light browsing and Office.

A friend of mine has the exact same model except with a 250GB 5200RPM HDD and his machine easily achieves ~7:00 hrs under the same settings.

Surely, the 320GB 7200RPM WD Scorpio Black does not result in a 1.5 hour loss in battery life. What's going on here?

    HP DM3-1044NR Specs:
    Intel SU4100 1.3GHZ w/ 4500HMD
    4GB DDR3 1066MHZ
    320 GB 7200RPM
    Intel WiFi Link 5100

finally i received my 1044nr today.
it looks really really cool, it is sleek...nice performance and ya..the trackpad is bad and the buttons need extra power to click.
Initially I had a bit trouble on concentrating texts on the screen, but i guess the screen resolution will take some time to adjust (earlier i was using a 15.4 screen with 1280 x 800) :)
Microsoft did sm gr8 things in here, no bloatwares at all...
Bios was F.01, upgraded to F.13
also, downloaded the driver files for Alps touchpad and keyboard

I have an idea and would like some feedback please :) so the hd3200 is an independent GPU correct? Just with no memory. So it should be able to be bios flashed correct? So in this case we could flash it and increase the core clock to say, 800?

I just got a dm3t yesterday and everything is great except the speakers. When I play music from iTunes (and sometimes when I'm on pandora.com) through the speakers or my headphones the songs have a slight crackling sound every minute or so. Does anyone else have this problem or know a fix?

The volume mixer has three items (speakers and headphones, system sounds, and iTunes) and I've tried rearranging the percentages on each but no luck so far. Maybe I've got them on the wrong settings but I'm currently at about 40/20/40.

Any help would be great as I'm not sure really what to do with this being a new computer and all...

I don't see why not. If you are happy with the 13.3" screen size then this is an excellent choice. Lightweight and thin with good battery life. A second battery is only $50 at costcentral.com. What I don't like is the glossy screen but hopefully the screen filter I ordered will take care of that. So far for what I use it for, everything but gaming, the machine has run great with very little load on the CPU. Just remember that computers get outdated after a couple of years so you may be tempted to buy something else a couple years down the road. With that said I do have old laptops (10 years old) that still run and run ok with a Linux on them.

Man. I'm a college student....doing what a college student does.. in Medical School actually so I look at a lot of high-res images and what not.

Since my DV2500 died, I'm using my dad's 6-7 year old HP with an Intel Pentium M 1600mhz. This giant baby basically packs the power of one of today's netbooks.

You really don't need that much power to do those tasks. Face it, you can do all that on a bloody cell phone. lol. So anything you buy, literally anything, will be more than adequate for your basic day-to-day tasks.

    Can someone help me out.

MY battery meter only shows % and not time remaining. Is this a HP thing or a win 7 problem.
    My model: HP DM3 1040US.

BTW, I deleted all of the bloatware, did i delete something that calculated this?

    Thanks for any help.

If you order it directly from HP, you can add an extra battery for $49.
The screen really isn't that glossy, just the bezel. Screens with edge-to-edge glass (or infinity display, as hp calls them) are a lot more glossy.

I'm not sure the machine will last 3 to 4 years. Honestly, i feel the heat dissipation design on this device is atrocious. 1 vent? at the opposite end from where all the hottest components are? It's a good deal, and very usable for what you require, though. And its $50 cheaper at Office Depot to boot. So if the plan is "a couple of years" i think it's worthwhile.

Is there still no fix for the speaker crackle yet? And I didn't have a time remaining on the battery directly out of the box, or after doing a fresh install so it looks like you'll probably need an separate program if you want it on your dm3.

i also had speaker crackle on my Hp mini 1000 (well not exactly speaker crackle, but when connected my sennheiser headphones), that was until i installed OSX on it, then sound quality increased significantly, so i'm pretty sure this has to do something with the driver itself..

    wow, 180+ freaken pages

i just got the su4100 w/320gb 7200rpm hdd version of this for about $475 after taxes, which was a pretty hot deal.

but i'm concerned with a few issues that i don't want to search through 180+ pages of posts for. can someone chime in?

    - after hibernation/sleep, the touchpad freezes. was there ever a driver fix to this?
    - im hearing different things about the heat this thing emits. i know hps are notorious for heat (and also the horrible mirror touchpads).
    - anyone know why this thing even weighs 4.2 lbs? does it utilize a fan? because other 13.3" ULV laptops are thinner and weigh about .4 lbs less.

Good Price, I also got mine for under $500 from amazon with discounts and rebates.

I have had no freezes after hibernation, its only been a few days.
No crackle from speaker, i did all the things people had mentioned earlier, I also have the newest Bios.

this thing does have some weight to it, compare to my other laptops, maybe its all the metal.
    No heat problem.
I am averaging 5.13 hrs on the battery ( using battery bar ), with screen 2 notches from the brightest, wifi on on med power using HP Recommended power plan firefox running with 3 tabs , excel and a few 20 min videos.

So far I love this machine guys! There is just one gigantic problem.

On the inside metal case, where your palms rest, on the right side as you type it creeks. It is coming from the metal not being flush with the chrome outside piece that holds the palmrest and the bottom part together if you know what I am saying.

Any ideas on how to fix it?

maybe the metal chassis yeah, but i think it's thicker than its competitors too. not sure why it would be thicker, does it possibly use a fan?

i have owned a dv2 in the past, and it was the size/weight of a 13" because of the wasted space (it was 3.8 lbs, which means a 11.6" dv2 weighs more than the 3.5 lb 13.3" acer and the 3.7 lb 13.3" asus ul30a) - not sure why HP decided to do that. i just hope it's not the same issue with the dm3.

Hey I have a few questions before pulling the trigger on the dm3-1044nr offered by the microsoft store.
    1. I know that one of the users received his and it turned out to be silver, but I just called the store and they said that it is black, can any other users confirm if it is indeed silver?
    2. It seems the battery life on these dm3's tend to fluctuate between models, how does the 1044nr compare to the other models? Particularly in a video playback drain test.
    3. Does this handle HD video well?
    4. Should I just order the laptop now at 450 + tax, or should I wait until one of the asus ul models possibly drops down in price in the future?

Thank you, and even if you dont have the 1044nr, but another model, I would appreciate your input.
