    HELP!

I got the dm3 1040 a few days ago. Now when I remove the laptop from the charger, my screen brightness plays on its own, and i don't know how to control it. What do I do?

Also if i want to change my computer from "sleep" to "hibernate" when I close down the lid, what do I do?

HP DM3 IS THE MACBOOK KILLER!

Hey guys, when I first got my DM3, the fan literally was non-existant, now it is extremely loud almost all the time. Any ideas on how to fix it?

You need third party software. There aren't any setting in-OS that would display the remaining time. This is a common "problem" in many HP laptops.
I hear BatteryBar is quite good.

Yep BatteryBar is pretty good, I am using it currently on my dm3. Times it displays don't seem to be accurate yet, since I have only fully discharged and charged my laptop once. I'll update after a few more discharges.

I have tried batterybar before, but it still didn't show the time. It showed calculating for more than a few minutes.

You need to change the power settings. Right click on the batter icon the select power options. On that page click Change plan settings. You can change dim the display option on that page. Then click advanced power settings and you can change what happens when you close the lid. You can also type buttons in the search field and Change what the power buttons do should come up.

I think you have to go through a full discharge cycle while it is running.

Hello everyone! I ordered the DM3Z yesterday from Best Buy for $549. It comes with an AMD Athlon NEO X2 processor and 3GB ram. The other laptop I was considering was the Toshiba Satellite T135 with Intel Pentium S4100 processor for 499$. Did I make a good choice? I'm assuming the DM3Z will be slightly faster. Thanks!

No.. I'm pretty sure the Intel SU4100 is faster. Its not like leaps and bounds, i honestly doubt its even that noticable. But the DM3 is a great laptop, so don't second guess your decision.

SU4100 scores ~970 in passmark charts, L625 ~830, and L335 ~870 (interesting that the charts show the L335 higher than the L625... i wonder if thats a mistake?)

I have the L335 and get 911 in passmark, would someone with the L625 run it and tell me what they get please :)

Just at the moment I wanted to get the $449 DM3 from Microsoft Store it's sold out. Does anyone know of a similar deal?

Or if anyone wants to sell his contact me please, I'm in the US next week.

I do not know if it is the same as ATI, but I just got my dm3t yesterday with the 105m graphics chip and it has switchable graphics. It even came with a little booklet explaining it in like 10 different languages. It does make the screen go black as it switches and then gives you the option to choose which graphics you want to use.

So I am hoping that it will have the same battery life as the Intel graphics laptops. It might not help a ton, but any help would be nice.

I guess that they have gotten on the ball and are now contending with the ATI switchable graphics.

I am looking for a small, relatively inexpensive laptop to use as a dedicated HDMI Hulu player for the living room HDTV (32" 720p), primarily using the Hulu Desktop program. I am doing this now by carting my home-office dv8t back and forth which works great but is not real convenient.

After browsing around this forum I am leaning toward a dm3z with the AMD L335 & ATI 3200 combo and 4 GB which I can get prebuilt from HP for $609. However reading over selected parts of the last 187 pages, I have found a wide range of opinion about this machine's strength as a video player.

I am looking for advice, hopefully from someone who has done what I am attempting with similar equipment. All comments appreciated. (Keeping in mind that what I have described above is at the high end of my budget.)

    Wait a minute.
The dm3t has switchable graphics when you have the 105M? So that means when I get the SP9300/G105M I can turn the 105m off and have better battery life. That's excellent news. How do you go about turning off the discreet graphics? I was hoping HP would offer the SP9300 with an integrated graphics only option but if you can just turn off the card that makes it a non-issue.
@Seventree: I'd go intel. I've read in some reviews that the amd's can choke when playing HD hulu.

Yeah, I have the su7300 but I bet it would be the same for the sp9300. Here is what the pamphlet says.

"SWITCHING GRAPHICS MODES - Your computer is equipped with nVidia Switchable graphics and has modes for processing graphics. When you switch from AC power to battery power, the computer can switch from using the Increased performance mode to using the Save power mode to conserve battery life. Similarly, when you switch from battery power to AC power, the computer can switch back to the Increased performance mode."

"In some instances, in order to optimize performance of the computer, the system will not allow you to switch modes, or it may prompt you to switch. It may also be necessary to close all programs before switching."

"HDMI only works in the Increased performance mode. If you use the Save power mode, you will not be able to use HDMI"

"When you switch between AC and battery power, you are notified that the computer is about to switch graphics mode. While the computer switches modes, the screen goes blank for a few seconds. When the switch is complete, a notification appears in the notification area, and the screen image reappears"

You can also go into advanced settings on the screen resolution. Then click the tab for Intel Graphics link. Then graphic properties, display settings, then power settings and choose disable power savings.

is it necessary to calibrate the battery??? I have 1044nr, ordered it from Microsoft store, it gives me around 7-8 hrs, with wifi on and three points below full brightness.

I tried to fully discharge it, changed settings in advanced power settings but it always end up into sleep. In the advanced power settings, I can't change the default "7 %" under battery>critical battery level to a lower value. So as battery reaches to 7 %, the notebook hibernates and hence doesn't allows the battery to fully discharge.

Does this mean, for example, that it might refuse to run HDMI on battery even if I am willing to sacrifice some running time? "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

Hi all. First post. I received my dm3-1044nr yesterday from the Microsoft store. I'm pretty happy with it so far, and for $450 before tax, I won't be complaining much. After fully charging the battery, I ran it on battery power for almost five hours and still had about 25% left. A couple of questions that I hope weren't answered already in this thread:

    1. The trackpad doesn't seem to have any advanced functions, not even scroll. Is "Mouse Settings" under "Devices and Printers" the right place to be to change the settings (this is my first time with Windows 7)?
    2. The button above the trackpad doesn't seem to work. I think it should turn amber when pressed, but mine stays white. My BIOS is F.01, and I will be flashing it to F.13 today. Will this fix it?

    Thanks for any help!

    David

No, I have already watched movies on my TV via HDMI while on battery power. The only thing you would have to do is change from power saver mode to balanced or high performance mode in the power options which can be found by clicking the battery icon in the task bar.

The one thing I noticed was that you cannot have the 105M enabled when you are in power saver mode. It doesn't even give you the option. So you have to change to either balanced or high performance to use it.

I am so happy about this new feature. So glad that I went with the Intel.

The performance of the graphics card is pretty good as well. I played Dirt 2 and it plays fairly well at 1280x720 - Multisampling 2xMSAA - Most of the setting on medium with two settings on high and two on low. It it by far playable on those settings, however if you go to the in-car view, things slow down because it is so detailed in the in-car view. If you turn the settings to the preset of low, then the in-car speeds up a little. Then when you turn it to ultra low, the in-car is very playable.

I will keep posting the more and more I find out.

    Jamesdorsey.... WHAT

Can you provide more info and screenshots?

From what they are saying it sounds more like a performance profile than actually switching hardware.

Can you check your device manager and see if there is something other than the 105m listed in the graphics/display section or whatever it's called.

I'm right there with ya! I received mine yesterday (and yes, the 1044 is silver, for those who are wondering) and charged it overnight.

The updated Alps driver appears to resolve the trackpad issues you mention. Mine had those out of the box as well. I'm working my way through the list of updates at the moment.

For all of you guys who ordered your 1044nr recently from Microsoft, is it true that the laptop is silver? If so, I will be bummed out because they show a black version on the site.

Meanwhile, it is listed at Microsoft as sold out, so I know I won't be sending it back, but if it is silver then that is false advertising.

Not sure when you ordered it but there have been many threads on here all stating it is silver like all the other models. Yes, it is disappointing that the pictures are wrong but I don't know if it is false advertising. MS never states the color in the specifications. I think the only series with black metal are the Probook series. I have a 5101 and it is nice but the pricing in the 13.3" formats are way more attractive on the DM3 series.

I ordered my 1044nr a week ago. And, yes, I have just finished reading almost 180 pages of past threads, and it seems that everyone received a silver laptop.

A merchant doesn't have to state the color in the specs. If they are showing a black computer, that's what you should get. If you ordered a sweater that was shown in the picture as black, even though it never said black, and they sent you a pink sweater instead, wouldn't you be pissed? That is a misrepresentation of the product that they are selling.

As I said before, naturally I will keep the laptop (it arrives Monday), and I'm sure I will enjoy using it. But I think is is unethical of Microsoft to misrepresent this as a black laptop. One poster even said he called Microsoft and was told that this was indeed a "black' laptop.

to all those who ordered from microsoft, How long does it take for you to fully charge your laptop? my dm3 for some reason takes more than 4-5 hrs to charge up, and that isnt even fully. I have calibrated the battery 3 times already. Im going to call HP either tomorrow or Monday. My dm3 is very hot where left palm rest is whenever I charge it for a long time.

I have already tried multiple sockets around the house, so its either 1) battery or 2) ac charger. IDK. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Guys, I looked at the microsoft pictures and it is not black, it just has darker lighting. I own a dm3 and in certain lighting the metal looks very dark...I think it is just the brushed finish

EDIT: Ignore my ignorance...i didn't see all the pictures, and the computer in the pictures is absolutely BLACK!

I didn't order from microsoft (i have the office depot Dm3) but the battery will be the same and let me assure you that is normal. These dm3s take FOREVER to charge! I was very surprised by it too. It will charge faster if you have the computer off than if it is on, but either way it is very slow.

I had my dm3z freeze after coming out of sleep again (or being close to sleep...not sure) I am suspicious of the Accelerometer for the HP Drive guard, that it or its driver may be causing the problem. Has anyone else noticed anything like this?

I originally thought it was my upgraded video drivers but i reverted to the originals and i still had the computer freeze after waking up (this doesn't happen very often at all, sometimes it wakes up fine).

Could it be the 65w vs 90w power supply? I haven't check my other laptop chargers but I do know that HP sells a more powerful one. This is the first laptop I have owed where the charge does take forever.

Is that charging while the laptop in use or while it's turned off?
