Then 4 hours does sound a little too long.
I rarely fully discharge the battery, but when I do, I don't think it takes more than 3 hours to charge it back up to 100%.
-
I have the AMD, can't say for the intel, but mine takes 4+ hours too, at least the first couple of times i paid attention to it; I think it has gotten faster though. Oddly enough, it also seems to charge faster when it's on. First couple of times may be longer for calibrating the battery?
-
It seems the battery on my dm3 has a personality all its own. On a recent trip 1 time charging it went from 20-80% in under 90 minutes, in another it went from 30-70 in around 140 minutes. Definitely a inconsistent charger this one.

Power Saver
High Performance

I just figured out the unknown device. It is the Hp Mobile Data Protection Sensor. The laptop came with home premium, so I upgraded to professional seeing that I get it free from my college. Still haven't installed all of the drivers.
Let me know if there is anything else you want me to test out for you. This forum has helped me out a lot in making the decision on this laptop, so I feel like I should give back a little bit and maybe help others. -
Awesome. I can't wait for this laptop now. I almost was swinging towards the probook 5310m but this one has better port and upgrade options, and IMHO looks better.
Now I just need to wait for a coupon. -
so i am trying to update my chipset driver 4 and it is telling me that my notebook doesnt meet the min requirements. this is the driver for switchable graphics on the DM3T.
anyone else having issues with the driver? -
Wow, I just spent 45 min with Asma the customer service rep to find the driver for the Hp Protect Smart. She even took over my computer and was moving the mouse all over the place, not really clicking on anything like she had no clue what she was doing!!
All I asked for was were I could download the drivers for the Hp Protect Smart. lol She told me that the driver was included in the Bios update. I knew it wasn't so I was like I will install it on my own and that I would like to end our session. Well she told me to end it, then she said she would, so I just turned off my wireless i figured that would be the easiest way.
It was just the biggest PITA! Then when I get off the phone I just looked up a generic dm3 model. I looked at the dm3t-1000 instead of the dm3t-1100. It had a lot more drivers listed and what do you know, the HP Protect Smart driver was right there!!!
They are so far from tech support! -
LOL! I guess I will have to change the lighting in my house!
Looks black to me!Attached Files:

May I ask how we can enable Power Saver ... from nVidia's control panel or some HP util?
Still waiting for my dm3 ... it's still in (presumably) Shanghai being built ... hopefully it'll ship tomorrow. -

Hey guys I have an HP DM3-1030us, and am curious about undervolting it to save on battery life and fan noise.
-Would you guys recommend it?
-Does it effect performance at all?
-How do I do it? -
-
go here and read this, the undervolting guide. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824
Feel free to ask questions about settings and such here. Don't expect to get the same voltage settings as everyone else; each unit is different. -
Our "family computer" is a late 2005 Mac Mini, and I bought my bride a late 2008 aluminum MacBook two Christmases ago. Both of those seem to do a great job of keeping drivers and software up to date on their own. Of course, I'm not personally using, and therefore tweaking, those very much, so maybe they are not as sporty as I think they are...
With this Win 7 DM3, I first went to Device Manager and tried to use Update Drivers for various things. Everything I checked claimed I had the latest and greatest versions. Then I came to this thread and pretty quickly found the link to hp's update page, which confirmed I was certainly not enjoying the latest and greatest drivers for things like that trackpad.
I spent most of yesterday updating drivers on this DM3 as well as installing my favorite programs (CCleaner, MPC-HC, OpenOffice, and the like). So far, so good!
As a bit of background, I decided to buy this DM3 after a disappointing experience with the Vista-equipped Gateway lt3103u. I bought that as an upgrade from a hp mini 1030nr to take with me on business trips mainly to check my email and watch 720p mkv files, thinking that since it had the 1366x768 display it would surely handle those. No dice. Its GPU is evidently no help with h.264 .mkvs, and thus, it choketh greatly on those. After a day or so of trying various media programs and codecs, I could just almost get the video watchable, but the audio stayed hopelessly out of sync. I really like the 11.6" form factor, especially since I always take my company-issued hp/compaq 6910p with me as well, but power-wise that Gateway just would not cut it. This DM3 seems to do everything I want, and its form factor is acceptable. We'll see how it stands up to travel...
For anyone for whom 720p h.264 mkvs is an issue, this DM3 1044nr is just fine, although the pre-installed WMP/WMC won't get you where you want to go out of the box. I've actually found that the combination of MPC-HC and the Combined Community Codec Pack is working best for me...even better than MPC-HC with coreAVC. With MPC-HC & CCCP defaults, Task Manager shows the CPU at about 20-30% load with my reference file. With MPC-HC/coreAVC, the CPU was running in the 40-50% range. Of course, YMMV...
I think I'm off to undervolting next...that looks interesting... -
Hi guys I am unsure if I did the undervolting right... some of the steps were kind of confusing.
Here, I showed a screenshot of what I did, I was able to undervolt it to .8250? Does that sound right?
-
what the hell is XP doing on that notebook?
-
It's Windows 7 with the classic UI set on.
-
Thanks for your help.
Edit:
Nevermind! I just googled those items and found out what you are talking about. However, could you still answer my last question: Are you saying that the 1044nr can't handle HD video adequately without installing some new codecs? -
Hmmm ... undervolting ... I'll be doing that do my lappy too.
BUT ... HP STILL hasn't shipped my laptop yet. I want it to arrive by this Friday afternoon, but it's Sunday and it's still "in production." HP says it should ship by tomorrow the 25th (which is why I haven't called them yet), but assuming it ships on the 25th, do you guys think it'll get here (in Michigan) by Friday the 29th with standard shipping? (I'm assuming you guys are more familiar with the shipping procedures at HP).
My laptop was ordered on the 16th.
Still, I'm a little anxious because in Shanghai it's the morning of the 25th already. -
I live in Michigan as well. Lower peninsula. -

I just unboxed /charged the battery on a new DM3 1044nr from the MS store. I also picked up an HP Eco Mouse cuz I'm not at a big track pad fan. There is a little button and white light just above the track pad that theoretically turns it off. When I push it nothing happens, The light doesn't change or go out...Is it me?
Thanks, Rick -
Did you guys know you suppose to charge till the indicator light in front turned off, sometime Windows reported 100% but the battery is not fully charge. I did it that way and it last really long.
-
I think other dm3-1044 owners had this issue too.

Good question though, and for clarity, out of the box, the video worked fine in Windows Media Player, but I was not getting audio on the mkvs that had AC3 audio encoding even after I installed Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. After installing the CCCP codec pack (which also contained a version of MPC-HC), everything worked quite well! -
hello guys,
I want to pull the plug on the dm3 but I really want to know what is the major difference between the amd and intel processors. I am getting a good deal with the ff specs : AMD Athlon Neo X2 Dual-Core @ 1.6GHz; ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics :4GB RAM; 320GB 7200RPM HDD. I am okay with the 5hrs battery life but what is most important to me is performance, will this AMD be enough for watching movies, surfing, and stuff? I really really hate slow machines so I hope this will be okay. And lastly is the graphics card ok for playing some basic games like need for speed most wanted (I do gaming occasionally). Thanks -
Basically, AMDs run hotter with less battery life.
On my config, the mobo gets a bit warm but the processors stay very cool.
I have the L625 proc.
Looking at the rest of the specs, I'm assuming that deal is for the L325.
(the only difference is 1MB cache vs. 512KB cache)
But anyways,
It's plenty fast for everyday use.
Windows 7 is very snappy, doesn't feel slow at all.
I'm not too familiar with the game, so take this with a huge grain of salt:
seeing how it's an older game, it should be playable at medium settings. -
Nanawillie, your expression "pull the plug on the dm3" is confusing. "Pulling the plug" would imply that you're terminating the dm3 from your list of options...
Anyways, your AMD configuration will handle all your listed needs just fine. In terms of performance capability, I'm running Counterstrike: Source at 60+ fps on 1280x720 resolution (default high settings, -dxlevel80), so older games aren't an issue.
I hope that gives you a better idea of what you're in for -

Right now the dm3 is looking like something better than a stopgap. The keyboard is tops, and the screen--which I was worried about--looks just fine at maximum brightness. The glossiness is a problem at lower brightness settings. Five to six hours of battery life. Love the looks and the aluminum case. Loading the new ALPS driver and setting the pointer speed at maximum make the touchpad, well, acceptable.
I haven't yet tried to play HD video from my Canon Vixia or Panasonic ZS3 yet, so I may be back asking about codecs...

My dm3 shipped just about an hour ago!!!! Still can't track it with FedEx but getting pretty excited. So hopefully (based on gizmodan's post) it should be here by Wednesday or Thursday here in the LP of Michigan! I'm just nervous that Customs will take forever to clear it.
Now back to studying for my midterm... New laptops and exams don't really go well together. -
I've ordered CTO computers from HP before and I've never had problems with customs... Only posting this because i live in SW MI...

^yes, I tested the 4x and 8x multipliers the longest before setting up the in between multipliers. i've been running 2 months+ now at those settings.
Are you testing at ONLY 4x? ie using maximal/minimal performance, with only the 4x enabled? That would truly suck if you couldn't get even a .25 v reduction, but i have to think you're missing something, or voltages are transitioning between states. -

Hi guys,
I just got my dm3-1044nr from Microsoft a couple of hours ago, and I am psyched! A couple of quick observations:
- I can't get over how nice this thing looks. I was really disappointed when I learned that the "black" laptop on Micosoft's site was really "silver." I pictured it looking like those cheap silver plastic laptops I've seen at Best Buy. But the HP is more of a grey -- almost titanium-like. It looks very classy.
- The screen is beautiful and seems to be just the right size; not too small like a netbook's and not too big like a 15.6" or 16". However, I do notice that the vertical viewing angle is very limited. The screen has to be tilted just right to see it clearly.
- For some reason I had a hard time connecting to my Linksys wireless N router. The laptop found my network right away, but would not connect when I entered my security key. After trying several things, I went searching and found a window asking me if I wanted to set up a "Homegroup" network. I clicked OK, and then my network immediately hooked up. The wireless N is very fast!
- I don't know what all the fuss over the trackpad is. Yes, the mouse keys are a little stiff, but you're certainly not going to develop carpal tunnel from using it. As for the pad itself, I found it to be responsive enough. I will hardly use it, however, because I use a Logitech bluetooth mouse.
I have a question for all you dm3 owners. Does Windows 7 have it's own anti-virus program? My computer said I was protected, however, I couldn't find a trace of the Norton anti-virus software that is supposedly on my computer. I am not going to use the Norton, however. I already have a paid version of Trend Micro PCcillin that I plan to install as soon as my Samsung external DVD drive/burner arrives from Newegg.
Meanwhile, I am really looking forward to tweaking my laptop to just the way I like it over the next few days. Right now I'm charging the battery, and tomorrow I will let it discharge all the way before charging it again.
By the way, this forum rocks! - I can't get over how nice this thing looks. I was really disappointed when I learned that the "black" laptop on Micosoft's site was really "silver." Just purchased a laptop sleeve for my dm3. I ordered a Timbuk2 Laptop Envelope Size S. I also ordered a Timbuk2 HAL Backpack on sale from Dell.com for $80 including Ground Shipping and tax. This backpack fits a 17" laptop and is valued at $120. I will post some pics of the sleeve first and a mini review for your reference. Thanks.
Sorry if I'm a Timbuk2 fanboy, used to own a Timbuk2 Datadump that is still with me after 2 years of daily abuse from school. A little worn, but no tears, or any defects. Their products are pretty well made. -

Go to Control Center> System and Security > Action Center. Under the Security tab, you will see your current anti-virus programs and you can either enable or disable them. Hope this helps. -
I am having the same issue and error message when trying to install the Intel G45 drivers on my dm3t. Is there a chance that early builds did not have the Intel graphics switching capability? When I look in Device Manager or run GPU-Z I only see the G105M listed. I would love to figure this one out!Click to expand...
Thanks

AVG gave one of my systems a clean scan, then MSE caught a trojan... I'm now running MSE on two of our machines, AVG on one, and then nothing on another (Linux). -
Haha, that's the antivirus program I was thinking of, Microsoft Security Essentials. Yep Windows Defender doesnt really defend at all.
