I also would love to know this.... i wonder if it was only for those who got the 7300 since you could get either the intel of nvidia with it they had a way to just add the nvidia to the other where as the 9300 does not have the option of intel? that would kind of suck for those would would like nvidia when needed and extra battery life when needed

    Concern:

My dm3 "supposedly" shipped at around 11 pm on the 24th. For some reason, it's about 36 hours later, and my dm3 is still stuck in Shanghai "in transit" after being stuck in "shipment exception." Does this mean it'll be delayed?

Finally got mine yeterday. So far so, so good. My only gripe so far is the mousepad buttons are really hard to press.

I haven't seen much about this in the forum so far but does anyone else have or use the "quickweb" function?

Just means it's in route but hasn't been scanned in a while. It could be in Kentucky or something.

Go with the ATI if it's not too late. Their budget GPUs such as the HD 4330 are excellent.

I experience the same thing. Does anybody else have this problem? If so, have you fixed it? :)

I've updated all of the drivers, BIOS, etc...it happens when I play music, watch hulu, etc. When the music "skips," it's almost as if the entire computer freezes intermittently. Otherwise, I <3 my Dm3!

The HP dm3 1044nr config and others with the WD3200bekt 7200rpm 320gb hard drive, there is an annoying noise every 8 seconds at Idle, this is the heads loading and unloading and can wear out the drive faster. I posted a FIX HERE:

Okay ... found a problem with my dm3-1044nr: no hibernation. When I select "Hibernate" from the Start button menu, the screen goes dark but all of the keyboard lights stay on, as does the hard drive. Same thing when I close the lid (I had changed closing the lid to "Hibernate" in the power settings).

The "Sleep" function shuts off everything except for the blinking light on the right edge, but I want the regular "Hibernate" function.

If you have a dm3-1044nr (mine's from the Microsoft Store), can you tell me if it can hibernate?

    Any help appreciated,
    David

    ***

Problem solved. Used System Restore to go back to an earlier state when hibernation worked. Some program I installed was keeping it from hibernating.

When I go from battery power to plugged in my video card goes haywire and I have to reboot. Anyone else have this issue? I am using the HP Power Plan but I don't think it matters. This occurs when the laptop is in hibernate mode, then plug in power, then power laptop back up. This is the Intel CPU and graphics card and I updated the video card driver to the latest version.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Woops...I didn't see all those pictures! That definitely is black! I am sorry, i guess i made a fool of myself. THe side shot was the one i was thinking of, and at the right angle, the dm3 looks very dark...but the picture you put up is unquestionably black...where did they get such a picture???

Well about every 8 seconds when the hard drive is idle the heads disengage (chi-sssh sound, louder than normal head read), its supposed to save battery life, problem is windows and other programs access the hard drive about every 11 seconds so they're constantly disengaging and engaging. If you use a smart diagnostic tool, it will say loads/unloads, drives are rated rated for about 300,000, after two days I had 1030, after using the program wdidle.exe I get about 10 a day.

It's not the same, but MS Security Essentials is a good product and the price is right (free). It has gotten good reviews from several print & online mags. Somewhere in Win 7 there is a link to a long list of AV programs, and SE is somewhere in the middle. I think they are trying to stay out of trouble with the EU, otherwise it would be preinstalled.

BTW make sure Norton or whatever came with your pc is uninstalled first, even if you have not activated it. There are dll's and stuff that can interfere with installing SE.

Just unwrapped the dm3 1044nr yesterday from the msstore. The notebook is silver not black as most of you have reported. Already having issues with the battery/AC unit adapter. Been charging for 4 hours and when charging, the bottom right link states that it is charging but the baby blue bar refuses to move up and stays at 29%. Charged all night and now down to 27%. LED light turns on when charging and off when unplugged. Tried draining battery and recharging and after 5 hours only 9% showing up on screen. Wondering if its the power supply/battery or the notebook itself???????

Try a different outlet. There's one in my house that is flakey and does this kind of thing.

Otherwise you may have gotten a bum battery or AC adapter. I see a call to tech support in your future.

Tried 4 different outlets in 4 hours and it finally charged up but to only 11% from 9. Contemplating if I should contact tech support or return to MSSTORE for refund. But it was a kick deal... ?????

Hi, am thinking of buying the dm3 soon, and will like to know if anyone has a detailed description of doing a clean install (especially without the optical drive) and putting back all the required drivers and updates? If someone has a link, that will be great! I have checked out the link on this forum but I guess there will be modifications for this "drive-absent" dm3. And secondly i have been reading a lot abt SSD's on previous threads, basically, what advantage do they have over the regular hard drives and can it be used as an add-on for the dm3-1030 config? thanks

I have a Dm3 1044nr that I received from Microsoft a couple of days ago, and have spent that time customizing it the way I like and installing software. But I am surprised by the relatively small amount of bloatware on this machine.

Revo Uninstaller shows many HP items iinstalled, but not other stuff that I saw listed on other threads. Software not installed on my laptop includes:

    -Norton Internet Security
    -Microsoft Office
    -Microsoft Works
    -Corel Paint Shop Pro
    -etc.

I'm not complaining, mind you, because it's less that I have to remove. But I'm wondering if any others of you who received your laptop from Microsoft have the above bloatware installed?

Laptop and desktop that come from Microsoft will always have less bloatware than elsewhere.

    I'm using HD Tune, and I don't see "loads/unloads".
It's probably worded differently. Which one would that be in HD Tune?
I'm thinking Power off Retract or Load Cycle?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anybody know how to activate the Function Keys on the dm3 1044nr? I tried pressing fn & f10, as was suggested in another forum, but it doesn't seem to work.

    Hey guys!

My dm3t came in today. Love it. The brushed aluminum is so much better than what I've experienced before ... a nice refresh and upgrade to the glossy Imprint for the past 3 years.

Now ... I have the SP9300 + G105M combo and YES IT HAS SWITCHABLE GRAPHICS!!! I can confirm right now that on Power Saver you do run off of the Intel 4500 MHD chip and not the G105M and you can switch at will. It's an amazing feature and I'm glad that HP included it.

I will post results, perhaps a mini-review when I'm done setting up this amazing computer.

Someone with SP9300 using integrated graphics should run a battery test to see how much battery life is saved vs. 105M.
I think people would like to know, now that the dm3t has switchable graphics.

My HD makes a funny clicking noise as well. I think it's making it when it spins up, maybe every 10-20 seconds when I'm using it. Left idle it barely does it at all, but still occasionally does.

The click is just a single click...

HDD Health showed 98% health, which is funny for a brand-new computer... :(

True. I know when mine shows up I'm taking that HD out and putting either an ssd (if I don't go that route from HP from the onset) or a 500GB WD scorpio blue. Seagate should fix this.

    @hypdotspec:
    From wikipedia: 184 B8 End-to-End error
This attribute is a part of HP's SMART IV technology and it means that after transferring through the cache RAM data buffer the parity data between the host and the hard drive did not match.

Article. Scroll down and all the attributes are explained.

I notice from HP's Software and Drivers site that they've updated almost every driver since my dm3 1044nr was manufactured. Should I update all of my drivers, or just ones I may be having issues with?

I have already updated my bios and mousepad drivers. Are there any other ones that I should definitely update?

    Thanks!

    Good news people ...

As I'm finishing up setting up my new laptop, I've been tweaking the hardware more to maximize battery life ... namely the CPU.

So far I have undervolted the CPU down to .925 V (the minimum) from the stock 1.15 V and the computer is still very stable.

    Yay! :D

    Hey guys!

I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu on the dm3 because I tried to create a new partition and it didn't let me (it only allowed me to format my hard drive and replace everything with Ubuntu or to manually create a new partition, which I'm not a fan of).

I ended up installing it within Windows; however, I find that many of the features of Ubuntus are disabled (I cannot install Netbeans within Linux, for example, which I need for my college classes). I also need to install Subversion in Ubuntu, but that is blocked as well.

It's easy to get rid of this copy of Ubuntu, but has anyone tried installing Ubuntu by creating a new partition? I need 15-20GB reserved for Ubuntu.

A month and a few days.
Right now it's 2181. Divide that by power on time, which is 276 now and it's only about 8 per hour. Probably not ideal, but i'm not too worried there.
I'm more worried about "(BC) Unknown attribute". According to wikipedia, it's for Command Timeout, and should normally be zero, but HD Tune shows 7.

    Hi,

In order to install Ubuntu or any other linux distro, you have to remove a partition, because you can't have more than 4 primary partitions. By default, there a 2 ntfs partitions (1 for boot and 1 for the system), a recovery partition and a hp_tools partition (for the BIOS I guess).

First, you should create a set of backup disks if it is not already done, using HP Recovery Manager. Then, you can use the Recovery Manager to delete the recovery partition.

If you want, you can also shrink the windows 7 system partition by using the Disk management utility found in windows 7. I recommend doing this in windows, because the partition utility found in the Ubuntu installer can corrupt win7 ntfs partition if it shrinks them.

Then, install Ubuntu. When the installer prompts for the partition setup, select manual partitioning and fill the empty space with an extended partition. You can then create a swap partition of about 4gb and the root partition in that extended partition (read this ubuntu doc if you need help with partitioning).

I can delete the recovery partition from my hard drive right, if I have created the recovery discs?

Based on your statement, I'm guessing the recovery discs serve as an alternative solution to the backup partition.

Exactly, the discs have the same functionality as the recovery partition. I think you can also order a set of discs from hp.

Great. Can't wait for the battery test with the G105 turned off.

Nice review - thanks for posting that. I'm also curious to see how your battery life varies between the two graphics chips. Here's a link to your review thread for the sake of convenience:

If you flip it over and look at the white HP sticker on the bottom, is your Model # listed as dm3t-1000 or dm3t-1100? I have the dm3t-1000 with similar specs and can't for the life of me find any sign of the Intel video option. Mine would have been manufactured somewhere around Dec 1st, so I am wondering if they subsequently changed motherboards and created the new dm3t-1100 model number. If that is the case I will be seriously bummed. I do remember a few weeks ago the SP9300 disappeared as an option from the CTO choices and then came back after a few days. Perhaps that was when they made the change. Can anyone else with the dual graphics mode report which model number they have?
