Really? Hmm...my DM3 was pretty low on battery, but I guess it still doesn't explain why my notebook died out of nowhere. I applied the BIOS update on day 1.

On-screen volume bar show up on mine. Running factory-install 64-bit.
I think on the 1044nr models, Microsoft removed that along with removing the rest of HP 'bloatware'.

If I'm anymore then 15feet away from my router my DM3Z looses wifi! Help please! I know its not a problem with my router because my dads laptop and three of my friends laptops work fine where mine doesn't pick up any signal. I updated the Atheros drivers and it made no difference. Help please!

Just got a DM3 1130us about 3 weeks ago (needed a more portable notebook for daily use vs. my gaming notebook) clean installed win7 pro 64...been pretty impressed with its capability overall so far. So, has anyone bothered to bump up the ram to 8gb in this machine yet and if so has this made any noticeable improvements in any way? Both my gaming rig(win7) and desktop pc(win7) benefited from 4 to 8gb.

try checking the power saving option, in advanced power settings; make sure it's on maximum performance.

Could it be a problem with my wireless card? Should I get it replaced?

$50 rebate and Bing 5% cash back would drop it down to $471 by my calculations (assuming no tax and free shipping).

no there's also a $15 coupon, which is "PRESDAY"

    so the math is

    $549 - $15 coupon - $26.70 (5% bing) - $50 = $457.30 OTD

didn't you get your laptop RMA'd or exchanged from the microsoft store?

the reasons i chose the dm3 were because 1) the price 2) at $450ish, the value won't depreciate that much. in 18 months i'd probably be able to craigslist this for $300 3) i don't need a laptop for gaming, so paying $450 to $550 more for a ul30vt or ul30jt is not worth it.

It's currently on a UPS truck going to Memphis, TN to get RMA'd. I guess I still have time to call them before it gets there and ask for an exchange, but I might just go with the J&R deal.

On a side note, I tried calling HP after my computer died and they said I had to call MS Store b/c the warranty got contracted out to them. Then when I called MS Store to get the refund, the guy told me my HP warranty should be intact and the HP rep was mistaken. Any idea what the real deal is?

ms providing hte warranty sounds like bs to me.. most retailers don't provide the manufactures warranty. plus, i think there was a warranty card that came with your box right (if i remember correct)? that would mean, to me, that HP is assuming the responsibility.

Has anyone with the dm3z with the 4330 gotten the new catalyst drivers to work for both the integrated/discrete?

A few months ago I tried updating but it would prevent me from switching to the discrete.

I WANT THIS FOR BETTER HULU PERFORMANCE :(

I've been experimenting a bit with drivers on a clean install. I noticed that after installing the ICH9 drivers booting went way slower and copying a 16GB folder went from 9 minutes to taking 12 minutes.

Now I did a clean install and I am running the MS driver again. It's back to 9 minutes.

I'm not 100% sure it was caused by the driver because I also removed a couple of programs like Avast and Magicvirtualdisk, but I really think the ICH9 causes bad performance on my DM3.

And another strange thing, it seems that the default MS touchpad drivers works more accurate than the Alps driver. Ofcourse the Ms driver offers far less functionality but it never lags and scrolling is totally smooth. I'm tempted to go back to the MS driver.

The Graphics driver from Intel.com allows lowering the gamma. The displayed looks less washed out that way.

By the way, for the DM3 1044nr the benefit of a clean install is quite limited. The MS install is quite speedy. And I've got the impression the Microsoft Security Essentials is a good package. Quick too.

Edit: someone on a dutch forum posted that a HP tech told him the new bios improves touchpad behaviour. I've updated the bios and will try it.

I'm not sure how you DM3z owners get 4-5hrs of battery life, but mine tops out at 3 with 30% brightness, wifi and power saver mode.

thats with a fresh install of 7...

    blah!

Bought a LA Robe sleeve and it fits very well. There's some space on the top and less on the sides, but the laptop doesn't slide around at all.
Very good sleeve and a nice price too.

JUST got mine. Here are my first impressions:

    1) Slick, sturdy, but a bit heavier than anticipated
    2) Trackpad does bother me a bit, i am getting used to it fast
    3) This thing is FILLED with HP crap... OMG... seriously... more than i remember from previous laptop purchases
    4) Keyboard is super nice, really dig it.
    5) Battery is discharging way too fast, as I am doing my initial backup, we'll see what I get with it - I am NOT undervolting SP9300

i agree with your assessment. it's heavier than it should be.. but it looks very nice and seems to be built robustly as well.

the touchpad bothered/bothers me too, but it's kind of an off and on thing. i think once you get used to how it works (let your fingers hover around it), it's easier to use. but there are still times when, no matter what i do, the surface smudges against my finger, making it hard for me to maneuver the cursor.

as far as the keyboard goes, i don't think i've seen a better one on any laptop keyboard i've ever used.

hm, when i had it for 2 weeks, i didn't really check for the batter discharge.. i'll have to see for myself once i received it again.

Yeah it's a bit on the heavier side. But I'd rather have it slightly heavier and feel sturdy than visa versa. Just my 2 cents.

My battery discharge was pretty good for my first DM3. Lasted about a good 6 hours. Yeah, way below the advertised 10, but I had my screen brightness a little below 50% and wifi on. Make sure to completely discharge the battery before plugging it into the outlet again.

What am I missing here? How can HP get away with claims of 10hrs? I believe that is called false advertisement. I am getting about 3hrs under pretty heavy load (wifi, hulu+hdmi thru NVidia, full brightness). Maybe it's not just HP, but they should estimate, or at least specify, the battery life under stress and under optimal conditions. Very misleading reporting by HP. Yes, I understand that I have P9300 and Nvidia on... but if I am able to buy it from HP, they should have an idea of impact that has on the one of the core specs of the "Ultra-portable" laptop. It's a dam shame.

I agree, HP is very far off. Even for my configuration (SU4100, Intel 4500) 10 hours is far from the truth.

When Acer specifies 8 hours for Acer 1810tz, it is really close to 8 hours. Sony and Apple are also quite honest.

I will go ahead and defend engineers here. Sometimes regulations around form-factor and proximity to other parts make us do weird designs like this. Especially given that this is such a tight form factor, I could see all kinds of heat/EMI/FDA/ULA standards that screw up the "aesthetics" of the laptop. Don't call us bozos!!!

I really doubt that you will ever be able to overclock it. HP laptops generally have a lock on the PLL that does not allow overclocking. So unless you have great knowledge of PLLs and soldering, I wouldn't get ur hopes up.

Anyone has created a Microsoft Signature Recovery CD for the DM3-1044nr?
I did a total recovery, and end up with all HP bloat-wares. I called Microsoft to get/buy their recovery CD, they said, " there is no way to buy Microsoft Signature Recovery CD, but original Window 7 instead." I like their Microsoft version because I think it's clean, faster, and better battery life(6-7 hours), compared to the HP version. Please help! my email is [email protected]

Download the iso here and use the serial on the bottom of your DM3. That's what I did.

Yes 1044nr. No issues. Except ICH9 driver, it made my system slower.

I use all the Windows standard drivers and:
    -Touchpad from HP.com
    -HP protect smart HP.com
-Mobile Series 4 driver from Intel.com (.exe package)

I hate Apple and have never bought any of their laptops but their build quality is superb. How come Apple never release a laptop with ridiculous issues like this?

That isn't labelled as an 'oem' iso, will it still work?

Also, is this the official latest version of windows or will it auto update to the latest version with my laptop key? :)

It works for me. I had to call the automated activation system though. It gave me the number and after two minutes it was activated.

It is the last official version afaik. It does update automatically.

    Windows 7 SP1 hasn't been released afaik.

    Hey guys,

I've got a dm3-1012tx. The official specs say that it's a GeForce G105M, which is DX10-compliant with 8 shader cores. I've run GPU-Z, which tells me that it's a GeForce G105M, but based on the GT218 core, which is DX10.1-compliant with 16 shader cores. I've checked dxdiag and it is indeed running on the DX10.1 DDI.

Has anyone else noticed this? Makes me think HP's actually fitted these notebooks with an underclocked GeForce G210M.

intel if you're only going to do those things. better battery life and cpu performance. i don't see the point in the hd 3200, unless you really need to play games that aren't too demanding with an ultraportable.
