Whoa, The battery life on the Su4100 with the integrated video card gets me about 5hours with light usage. Maybe more if I play around with the power settings in Windows and brightness adjustments.

I'd go with Intel over AMD anyday.....

Yes get the Intel SU4100 or higher for better battery life.

SU2300 can't throttle down, unlike SU4100 and higher.

(and yes Intel does claim that SU2300 has Speedstep but yet it's stuck at 1.2GHz.)

The SU2300 will still give better battery life than the AMD though.

I see... the higher up Intel processor isn't available in the UK on this model. I'm tempted to go for the AMD as its graphics is better. Does anyone have experience with heat from this AMD model?

If you're into gaming the extra GPU power is worthwhile.

If you don't game, go for Intel.

There are many user experiences about the AMD in this thread.

Yeah go for Intel if you want battery life, buy AMD for better bang-for-the-buck.

Does anyone know HP's policy on stuck pixels? I've had my dm3t for about 6 months now and don't want to try anything myself if its under warranty.

I have a dm3z, Turion Neo X2 with ATI 4330 GPU. I was wondering... what graphics driver are people using? Is anyone successfully using a non-official driver?

Anyone who has the stock Intel Config, with the su4100 and the integrated video card, tell me how much battery life their BatteryBar app is displaying after a full charge? I'm getting 4 hours and 28 minutes, but then again I'm on low brightness and "power saver" feature on Windows.

I know it also depends on the usage but let me get it straight down to the point, also The battery will stay at 100% for a while and then drop down to 94%, without going to 99,98,97, etc.

Well I contacted HP about the pixel issue, and its under warranty (long as I didn't cause it somehow), so I'm sending it in once I get the box from them. I also asked about the estimated battery life of Dm3t-SP9300 models.
    What...lol

Wow, the trackpad really sucks on this machine, I've had it for about 4 weeks now and I'm really starting to get annoyed by the trackpad.
I disabled the multitouch bull and everything except the 2 finger scrolling, and the scrolling sucks, it randomly clicks on things, and the buttons are too freaking stiff.
The scrolling is a hit or miss, either you get it right and start scrolling with either the right side of the trackpad or your fingers, I just started using the scroll bars on the right side of windows now..
Other than that, the DM3 is a great laptop.

My trackpad has none of these problems.

Try using the little disable button above the pad when you type maybe. It's easy to brush against it with your palm and get random click.

In the beginning I had similar problems as you. But after using my DM3 for three months, my touch pad works excellent. I'm even fully used to the two finger scrolling.

    Couple of things I did:
-I'm using the latest driver from HP.com and changed the sensitivity settings
-I keep my hands moist with hand cream (this makes a big difference) The touch pad works bad with dry hands. In the beginning I had no clue I had dry hands.
-I cleaned the touch pad of any sticker residue. When the DM3 is new there's a sticker on the touch pad, when you remove it leaves residue. This residue interferes with good operation.

I've also tried the default MS driver for a while, it has some advantages but in the end I think the HP driver is better.

The buttons are stiff but I hardly use them, I use tap to click.

    Can i check for the DM3... SP9300

after a couple of hours of usage will the palm rest area be hot/warm?

palm rest area is placed where you placed your palms while typing on the machine..

    wireless is 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

    10/100 or 10/100/1000 connectivity ?

Any benchmark scores for reference eg 3DMark06?

How long is the battery life for G105M and Intel GPU respectively?

    thanks for all answers.

I've worked out all the mouse settings in the control panel, it did seem to get a little better but the 2 finger scrolling still sucks, maybe I'm too used to the MacBooks that I played with that had the 2 finger and all.

It's not the suface of the mouse that I hate, the tracking and how it bad of a job it does tracking fingers...

    Have a look at Acer 3820TG: Intel Core i5 430M (2,27 – 2,53 GHz) and ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650 (1 GByte GDDR3).

It's out in Europe, should be (soon) in US too.

Similar to the above question, what's the difference between the 1140us and the 1040us? All the listed specs seem to be the same from what I can tell.

The 11 in the front of the model number indicates an update to the 10xx models.
I think what they added is QuickWeb, and switchable graphics for the dm3t with nVidia G105M. I believe they also started to ship better external drives (same functionality, but looks better, with metal plating on top).

What country are you in? HP lists several models with that number prefix.

This might be useful for anyone who's looking to compare different models of the dm3:
HP Pavilion dm3 Entertainment Notebook PC series - HP technical support (United Kingdom - English)
It lists all the different editions and you can get detailed specs by clicking on the model you want, then Product info > Product specs

    Hello everyone,

I've had my dm3-1121ez for a few weeks now, I had a lot of doubts before getting it and this thread helped me a lot, so now I'd like to contribute. It's probably nothing that hasn't already been written but I'd like to list some of my thoughts on it.

Performance: I was looking for a mobile computer that has no problems multitasking(lots of tabs in Firefox, word, excel, adobe reader, skype etc open at the same time) and can occasionally run heavier stuff(Mathematica, SolidWorks) when it really has to. I'm a person who is only interested in computers when it's time to buy a new one and since my last computer was dated back to 2005 I had no idea how this AMD Athlon X2 L335 1.6Ghz would perform. It did not have any trouble doing anything that I threw in its way and was surprisingly responsive.
Battery: It was not particularly impressive, I guess about 3 hours in medium usage.
Heating & Noise: At times it gets a bit hot where you rest left wrist but it is not so uncomfortable. The fan noise is quite noticeable when it's turning on full speed.
Trackpad: I've read so much about this and it scared me before getting the computer. Yes, it's glossy. Yes, it's a shame that HP does this to us when they know how to design good trackpads. But it's manageable, I increased the sensitivity and I can use it just fine when I have to.
Keyboard: One disappointment was that the priority of functional keys(brightness, volume etc.) on the top of keyboard have increased priority over f keys.. So if you use shortcuts a lot, you have to learn that Alt+F4 is now Alt+fn+F4 which is quite annoying, and you will put the computer to sleep/log off lots of times before getting used to it. Also, the keyboard and trackpad show fingerprints.
Speakers: Are sufficient in volume but are not so good in quality. I would recommend an external sound system if you enjoy listening to music.

In my opinion there are not so many affordable really mobile laptops out there(netbooks excluded for obvious reasons), I was starting to think of entering the mac world, but I really liked windows 7 and it came to the point where this dm3 was priced the half of a mac so I went with this one and I'm glad I did. I hope this was helpful.

Pretty good run down of the laptop.
You can change the function of the f keys in the bios. It's under the setting action keys. It switches them between the default f kyes and the media keys.

Laptops should never be on your lap. See all those vents on the bottom? You're blocking them with your legs.

Laptops should be on a flat surface at all times...

When the laptop is on a flat surface, there's some space around it because of the feet. It's better for ventilation.

But either way, my DM3 gets very hot. It seems to be normal.

HP hasn't done the best job on it. Or it would not get so hot and we would be getting better battery life. Like Asus UL30.

If you look online there are articles that about why they're not actually called "laptops" anymore, but are now notebooks. One reason is that they are not "intended" any longer to be put on a laptop, especially due to the heat that is emitted, plus, humanly speaking, it's not good for a man to have such a heated laptop in his "lap."

The term 'laptop' is unfortunate. It was replaced by the term 'notebook' by computer professionals long ago for this very reason.

And no, putting it on a flat surface is fine because the bottom of your notebook has little feet on it which allow space for the vents to breathe.

Incidentally, I am a computer repair freelancer.

@cebalrai, I get your point, I wasn't trying to be rude, I appreciate all the help and advice i'm giving, my old laptop (the one I returned) the acer 4810 ran amazingly cool, and had great battery life, it was unfortunate that it kept freezing!

Anyways aside from the hardware questions, looks wise, how many people here keep the stickers on their notebook after they get them? I'm not talking about the ones that say Windows 7 and Intel/AMD ones, the HP DM3 Ultra-Thin and light stickers aswell as the media smart stickers on these notebooks.

Actually I don't think we are missing the point. Everyone is already aware the DM3 gets hot. Too hot.

Laptopmag noticed the same: HP Pavilion dm3t - A Review of the HP Pavilion dm3t

But now that I know it gets very hot, I've accepted it. It doesn't really bother me.

Yep that's the card. HP has a blacklist as to what can and can't go in it. I tried the intel ultimate n 6300 card and it wouldn't work. I got a 104 error message upon bootup.

I leave the intel/windows/nvidia stickers and all the rest come off. The only stickers on mine were an energy star sticker on the lid and a trackpad sticker.

I haven't really noticed mine getting any warmer than my inspiron 1525 but I don't game on it. I don't use it on my lap either. Has anyone had issues due to heat? Like components failing? Just want to know what to look for.

Oh another thing have you guys got the sim card slot? My sim went in there but the laptop didn't recognise it was in there, is it not connected to anything or something?

@nitewalker, what card did you put in there in the end?
