I think you have to have the integrated WWAN feature (optional) to actually use the sim card slot.

Just the one it came with. It's been fine for me. It sees networks that the card in my inspiron 1525 don't see so I guess it's fine.

the flash performance is pretty rubbish for me, in full screen (farmville) it is really slow, and it degrades in quality and then goes back to normal, still really slow though??

edit: if in high performance mode 720p hd plays fine, 1080i plays with a little stutter, and flash plays a little better, but if I keep it in high performance it gets really hot!

any of you guys able to watch hd (apple movies or youtube) in balanced mode without stutter?

Mine with the intel chipset (specs in signature) has always played 1080p videos fine but NOT in fullscreen mode. Fullscreen it will play choppy, and mines has always been on balanced. Maybe because I also reformated the laptop when I got it so HP's power plans isn't on the machine....
But 1080p from apple (quicktime) or youtube plays fine but not in fullscreen, 720p in fullscreen is perfectly fine.

The DM3 is fine if it gets hot, download Real Temp from Real Temp - CPU temperature monitoring
and check your tempatures while playing the videos and report back, and we'll tell you if they are safe or not.
I know the intels stay between 103-120*F here in my case with a room temp of 73*F.

On the support section of the HP website there's a GPU driver update for ATI cards. It's a minor update though.

    cheers man

I used theflowofchi's settings for undervolting, testing the x8 multiplyer, (0.8500) it looked like it was fine but after 30 mins the lappy just turned off! does that mean it didn't work? so I should go to 0.87500 and try that?

also I want it to run cooler so what multiplyer would I use to replicate windows power saver mode??

and when the lappy crashes none of the voltage settings are saved??
    thanks

edit: it seems to be working fine using 0.8500, performance on demand, what would I use for HP's Balanced mode??
my power saver mode is running at 0.7125, so i'm getting quite good temps

Big big trouble guys! I just woke up to find out there's a dark show on the screen and half the screen is "washed out". I think I might have slept on it or something like that! I just want to know if I can get hp to fix it under the warranty (I bought it at J&R). I know it wouldnt be cost effective getting a new screen! Am so distraught, cos I've only had this for 2months! Any ideas?

Don't sleep with your laptop anymore. I know, I know; it's just too sexy to not take to bed with you. ;P

Seriously, if you feel yourself drifting, close it and push it aside.
I'd call HP and see what they could do. They might not cover it, but you can check the service manual online to see if replacing the screen is up your alley.

Hey all, I'm looking at a secondary travel laptop I can carry in a backpack around town/planes/trains.

These two seem decent deals. I want to know if the HP will do a good job of basically, websurfing, uploading pics on photobucket and facebook, watching the odd DVD on an external DVD player etc... Nothing CPU intensive. Oh and music from MediaMonkey.

    The Asus seems faster...

Are you guys happy with this seemingly slower DM3 variant for those who have it?

DM3 SU2300 will do that fine.

The Asus does seem like the better deal. Better battery life too.

The battery life of the DM3 on that site is wrong. It doesn't get to 10 hours. With SU2300 you'll get 4:30.

You're welcome. There's one thing to watch out for with the UL30A. In Europe there are models with 4400mAh and 5600mAh battery.

Seeing that they quote 8.5 hours this might be a 4400mAh model. Which will result in about 6 hours battery life, while the 5600 gets about 8 if I recall correctly. You may want to do some more research though.

Mhmm indeed it doesn't say, just an 8 cells. I'll ask when I get back there.
A big issue for me is the AZERTY keyboard on both those models... at least if I'd stayed in the Netherlands I'd get Qwerty :/

I need some advice, I love my dm3 but I cant stand the heat of the AMD! i'm thinking of selling my dm3 on ebay, then buying a dm3 with the SU4100 from an ebay international seller.

do you think its worth it? I wont lose any money, but will the SU4100 be any cooler? more battery life?

also if I purchase an american laptop, how will it work in the uk? do I just change the plug?

    thanks

Yes. I bought an DM3-1044nr from US.

Mine gets hot when I play Youtube HD videos. But it's never a real problem...

Battery life is like 5 hours max with wifi on.

Edit: NBR DM3t review is up: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5639&p=2
    Theirs doesn't get hot.

Strange, maybe mine gets hot because of the 7200rpm drive.

They did a good job on the review. I wish they would review the SP9300/G105M combo though. I'm pretty sure most of the issues they had would be resolved. Can't say I encountered any driver issues, but I did do a clean install and updated everything I could.

Not quite sure why yours gets hot phil. I have the above mentioned combo and a 7200RPM drive (seagate; it's the one it came with which I'll be replacing soon with an SSD). I'll do some extensive youtube HD watching on mine and see if it gets hot.

How do you guys test your battery life? I don't mean benchmarks; real life tests.

I just ran the latest BIOS (3-2010) update. After 5 minutes Youtube 1080p the DM3 is still cool to the touch.

I reckon battery life wil have improved too. I'll try to measure it.

I've only done it this way.

I'll try draining the battery fully with the new BIOS.

I set it on Power Saver, about 30% brightness, surfing the web. No Bluetooth.

Thanks for the bios update heads up and the link.

I was actually gonna get the 7K500 for my dm3t until I figured most of my media I keep on external drives anyway.

    I don't think I can roll with 30% brightness though. I stick with 50-70%.

Btw that's a nice scene in your av. Is that in the netherlands?

Well 30% brightness is enough here for inside with lower lighting. I like to see how far I can push it.

Yes it's definitely worth the swap. I don't know if the UK customs will charge you VAT though.

If you have a UK power cable you just plug it in the adapter.

Ok, I've been undervolting and stress testing the better part of this morning and I have to say I'm impressed. My temps went from 69 celsius after 10 minutes with orthos to about 56 after undervolting. I'll post my settings later, most likely a screen cap of RMClock, but in general I turned off IDA, have SuperLFM, 6X and 7X at 0.9250 and 8X at 0.9500. Right now I'm doing heavy stress testing of each multiplier to make sure it's stable.

I'm not crazy about losing the 8.5X multiplier, but no big deal really. It just runs at 2.13Ghz max now.

Also I wasn't getting BSOD at all when 0.9250 and 0.9375. The system would just freeze and require a hard reset. Odd but at least I know when certain settings aren't working.

I had no idea temps could be brought down that much. Plus the benefit of a bit extra battery life. My inspiron's next.

0.9500 froze after 59 minutes of orthos... :(
    Trying 2 steps up now.

Posting in the undervolt thread if it keeps freezing to look for a solution or if the freezing isn't related to undervolting.
    edit:
0.09750 is running fine. No freezing.

It wouldn't hurt. You'd get lower temps and a bit more battery life.

I doubt you'll get better bastterylife with the SU7300 because, as far as I know, you can't lower the voltage on the lowest multiplier.

There may be some room with higher multipliers though.

I remember someone saying I would get On Screen Display in 32 bit but I don't see it. Do I need to install some software or driver?

There's some bloatware, as you'd expect from any PC manufacturer.
You can go all the way and install a new clean copy of Win7.
Many people here have done that and noted that their machines became more snappier.
I just removed some of the bloatware, like the WildTangent games and Norton antivirus, MS Office (60-day trial). And removed some stuff from the start up list.

I guess the Qualcomm Gobi 2000 3g wwan Card is the 3G card for DM3. Is this just a straight forward process of building it in with a screwdriver?

So I guess this wasn't true?

Just got my Dm3 back from HP. Blue pen marks and white sticker residue on the top aluminum, big scratches around the bottom 2 screws on the bezel. Oh and they did a factory reset -.- The dead pixels are fixed though, so I guess thats good.

    Time to reformat...

Update on the battery life: I'm running Battery Bar 3.4.0 now. Seems to work fine.

I get 7:27 hours with 3 stripes brightness and Wifi on, surfing the web. This is with SU4100 and Hitachi 7K500.

It may improve further if I run Battery bar longer.

@ XDViper, discussing installing OS X on PC hardware is against the forum rules.

Try downloading the Hulu desktop and playing it from there. For me, Hulu drops frames inside a browser but does great in its own environment.

Also, make sure you get Flash 10.1 beta, which uses the GPU... Assuming you have a GPU in your machine.

Phil, I have the same specs, I don't understand how you're getting about 7;30 hours of battery. I get about 4-4:30 hours.

How many times have you calibrated the battery?

I'm not sure if Battery Bar is accurate though. Have you installed it?

I've calibrated the battery often. I'm running a clean install, it's in Energy saver with 30% brightness.

I have both Battery Care and Battery bar installed. Both are reporting different times.
I've used the battery on Balanced mode with some brightness and wifi. Viewing some flash video and internet browsing.
Battery bar reports about 3:50 while battery care only reports 2:16.
Their both wrong as I've used it for more than 5 hours at times.
