You'll need to continue using Battery bar for a longer time to have it reflect actual usage time.
Running both at onces may not be a good idea.
I got my 7:30 surfing the web w/o flash.
-
New update to the dm3?
-
Flash is very intensive on battery life, it just takes up a lot of watts. So if you're watching a video and look at the calculated time, it calculates the power consumption at that time and divides remaining capacity by power consumption. But since you don't really watch 2-3 straight hours of flash video, you end up getting a lot more life.
BatteryBar doesn't quite work as simply as most meters. It takes statistical usage and calculates your remaining time. So eventually it adapts to your typical usage and shows you what you're likely to get out of your battery life.
Phil is getting 7:30 and that sounds very typical from a CULV processor and light web browsing (read, this means no music, no video, no intensive multi-tasking). Your life is more typical for 'regular' use. -
Anybody got any info on HP Pavilion dm3-2001ax?
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...PCVidhsoF-doFjGx0NoOSyZbNQ?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us -
On the support page for the 2001ax it lists an ati radeon card as the graphics card. My guess is it's one of the new amd refreshes.

Any coupon to go with Officemax deal?

I can hear a little moving part inside my DM3 when I shakes it. It sounds like there is a penny inside the chassis. I wonder if it is part of the sensor for the 3D DriveGuard.
I never dropped my lappy, and it works normal.
Did anyone notice the sound? -
It's probably the battery latch. It wiggles a bit. Try holding that in place and seeing if it still makes the sound.
-
The dm3t is now unavailable to order from hp.com; it's been replaced by the dm4.
-
All things considered, the dm4 is only .5" longer, pretty much the same in thickness and width, and .2 lbs heavier. I'd be fine with the dm4; seems like a fine machine. On top of that it has a built in dvd driver, which probably could be replaced with a second hdd.
-
I wonder why they kept the amd version. Maybe for budget-conscious people..
-
Argh, just brought this DM3 a month ago and it's already outdated! I guess thats what happens when you buy computers or any technology these days.
Not that I mind, but the DM4 looks really neat. Thinking about getting rid of the DM3 but I got this laptop for a REALLY good price and I think it was pretty much worth it. -
You know the mysterious black dm3 that popped up a while ago on Microsoft Store's website?
It's real.
YouTube - HP dm3t Laptop Review -
It's not black, check 0:32 - 0:37.
-
Looks like it's just the lighting.
-
Check out 0:40 - 1:10.
-
yeah it's the normal aluminum that tends to look darker under certain angles and lighting.
-
And to think, I was just about to order a dm3t after checking out my brother's which came in just last week.
-
The dm4t seems a worthy successor. Only .2 lbs heavier, .5" longer and it has a dvd drive. Not to mention it uses i-core processors.
-
And better graphics and no chrome-trim.
-
Exactly. The AMD machine is really the perfect balance between a netbook and full-on laptop at a price that is the same, not to mention the best fit and finish of any laptop in the $500 price range, IMO.
Today, I managed to get Catalyst 10.4 to work, which means allows the HD3200 to take much more of the load in Flash 10.1. This simple change takes away the greatest performance weakness of the AMD version. -
what is the max memory the dm3 1030 support? can it handle 8 gb?
-
I believe 4gb is the max
-
8 GB as read via the service manual.
There's 2 RAM slots. -
New owner here, figured I'd chime in on the conversation since these reviews were helpful when I was shopping around.
I picked up the 1140us model (su4100 intel, 7.2k hdd) 4 days ago and am pretty happy with it. Replacing my asus 1000h this is a nice upgrade in performance. I am running office productivity apps, surfing, and internet video for the most part.
I have had no heat problems even during 4:30hrs of Hulu watching in bed with the bottom of the laptop on top of a blanket. Only somewhat warm to the touch at the end of that which was surprising as the asus 1000h would be HOT after such behavior.
Battery life has been great too. That 4:30 of constant 480p full screen hulu watching chewed up a full charge but at about 50% screen brightness. I'm pretty happy with that.
Today at school running about 30% brightness I have gotten about 7 hours on a charge and it's not dead yet, but close. This was note taking and surfing w/ 15 minutes of sleep in between two or three sessions of use.
All in all I am pretty pleased. Battery life, thickness, and weight were the considerations which kept me away from a similarly priced i3. Though I am wondering whether I might have been happier with a refurb'd HP 5130m business class machine from the HP Outlet for the same price...hmmm.
That Hulu marathon was my battery calibration discharge. Problem is I had already installed Battery Bar. So now Battery Bar thinks I watch Hulu for constantly, and thus I have totally whacked "Full Lifetime" reading for the battery. Sometimes at around 80% charge the remaining time will be greater than the full lifetime figure. I assume this will correct itself over the course of many uses. Otherwise I may uninstall and reinstall battery bar.
Cheers! -
The new version with the i5 is almost $1000. It's a different class of computer than the AMD version.
-
Putting a laptop on top of a blanket like that is the best way to shorten its life.
-
How did you manage this?
-
Just a heads-up:
The dm3z was updated today to include the lastest AMD chips and the ATI HD 5430 graphics (update from the 4330, it should get 6000+ points in 3DMark 05).
The top of the line option is now the AMD Turion(TM) II Neo Dual-Core K625, instead of the L625.
The new ones use 45nm SOI, vs. the older ones which use 65nm.
The wattage has also been reduced to 15W (from 18W), and bus speed is twice as fast at 3200MHz.
It runs at a lower clock rate (1.5Ghz) though, and according to notebookcheck it's actually slightly slower than the L625.
I think the dm3z may be the best budget ultra-portable out there. -

Recent bios update F28
Addresses Heat issues with the Amd processor -
And HP is having a sale for the holiday weekend.
Looks like I may have to pick one up.
-
Excellent. This is a big deal in my opinion.
-
So far my max load temp during prime95 is 29c compared to 36c before the bios update and replacing hp's stock thermal gel.
-
Forgot to mention: The dm3z refresh also has the new etch design found on other Pavilion laptops. This may actually be a downside for some people.
-
I noticed that as well, but it's not a dealbreaker, IMO.
-
Catalyst 10.5 is out now. Thanks for the heads up on Catalyst and the BIOS. My relentless checking of this thread months after buying the laptop has paid off. These are two of the biggest potential improvements you could get from software updates.

I agree. If my dm4t doesn't work out this is likely what I am going to replace it with. -
Awhile ago, I was interested in the DM3, but the HD3200 onboard just didn't cut it, and the one with the switchable graphics was too expensive, so I decided to hold off and wait for an update.
I actually just by chance decided to google it today and came across this info - to say I am excited would be an understatement! Not only is the new model better-faster-stronger-cooler, but for near the same price as the old one, includes the a dedicated/switchable graphics card!
For the games I play, I was expecting the sucessor to the HD3200 to be fast enough, but for only $100 more, you get the dual core chip + the dedicated HD5430 (according to the website). The dual-core chip by itself is an additional $50. Thats for the K325 I believe.
Do you happen to know if there are any benchmark improvement numbers? -
It does seem that the Intel version is significantly more money. I was waiting for the intel upgrade because it also comes with the intel HD graphics, which I thought would beat out the HD3200 graphics, but it seems like for the same price, you can get the AMD version + the 5430 for less than you could get an DM4 (intel) with onboard graphics, making the AMD version the much better choice for the money if you're using it to play relatively older games, like I would be. If you're not worried about any sort of gaming, it might be a tossup.
-
The intel HD graphics are far weaker than the HD 3200.
-
Has any one got any laptop mat suggestions? I use it on my bed a lot and am concerned about the heat and effect on sperm! It doesn't necessarily need to have a fan in it, I figure if it raises my laptop then the laptop's fans will work better.
-
I've gone for this mate, apparently cools it with no fans.

Interesting. I wonder how it works.

Anyone with the Intel 4500 DM3 tried outputting to a 1080p HDTV?
I can't get the image full size.
I posted the details here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...7274-intel-4500-hdtv-how-get-full-screen.html -
the 4500mhd definitely, but the update to that, the intel HD IGP built into the corei3,5,7 is supposed to be siginificantly faster, about on par with the ATI HD4200
-
Oh. Yeah, you're right; forgot about the new igp integrated with the Core processors.
-
The left palm rest doesn't get uncomfortably hot anymore. I wasn't watching temps but it's clear it made a huge difference.
-
Yea, it's made a massive difference for me as well. I'm delighted with it. Does anyone have any idea what they would have changed to make such a big difference?
Can anyone with the dm3z get it to run without the fan turning on? -
I got this 1039wm on the 17th -refurbished. I've been on it alot since. I upgraded to the latest bio the other day and it seems on my end that they really did address the issue with the heat. I could've lived with it before because it was obvious that it was the HDD and it wasn't constant. Mouse pad is fine, I actually like the mirror finish.
I can't find any fault with this laptop - though I'm not a fan of the bezel. The plastic is scratch prone. That's it.
