    Windows Experience Scores are:

    Processor: 4.2
    Memory: 5.8
    Graphics: 3.5
    Gaming Graphics: 4.8
    Hard Disk: 5.9

Curious, why would the "Aero" graphics performance be that much less than the gaming graphics and are there settings I should be using to improve this?

The difference in CPU performance is too small to notice. They're both at 1.3GHz, SU4100 with 2MB cache, SU7300 3MB cache.

The difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm is usually bigger.

A 3Dmark 2006 benchmark result has finally showed up for the HD5430 on notebookcheck.com. Its at 3468 which pretty much agrees with the Passmark GPU benchmark.

$525? Wow, I wish we had bing cash back in Canada. Instead we're stuck with trying to find last year model refurbs for under $600!!

BTW, so what are the common "settings" for the ATI3200 card that most people are using (who are not gamers) to improve performance/battery life? 90% of the time I'll be using the laptop for browsing, youtube, emails, with the balance being Office (Word/Excel) use.

Yea, BCB is great but it will be ending the end of July. It probably a good thing for my bank account and I'm running out of space to put things. I'm turning into a notebook hoarder!

Hi guys, I have 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium with my HP DM3z with the specs in the sig.

I want to downgrade to 32-bit because some of my 16-bit software that I use doesn't work on 64-bit and I never use 64-bit software anyways.

Will this in anyway make my computer slower or anything besides the ~600mbs of memory I lose? The thing I worry most about it is the drivers that may not be optimized for 32-bit, seeing as this computer came with a 64-bit OS.

Should I just suck it up and keep 64-bit W7?

I downgraded from 64-bit to 32-bit on my DM3. In my experience 32 bit felt less snappy than 64 bit.

After that I went searching for a 64-bit driver and found it, so I am back to 64 bit Windows.

Well, my Staples "next day shipping" order didn't come in today, so I'll be playing with the AMD version for the weekend. Feels slower than I thought it would. Even typing this message right now feels way slower than what I'm used to which is weird. Like there is a delay from when I hit the key to when it shows up on the screen??

Wonder how much improved it will be after wiping it and running a clean version of Win 7 64 bit.

Been using it for 45 minutes, battery is at 70%, with mainly browsing and screen brightness at 40% or so. Was hoping for better battery life. Not sure if that's a combination of the AMD offering and the fact that it is a refurb (possibly they don't provide a new batter with a refurb)?

Played some basic Youtube stuff and have a slight bit of studdering (basic 320p stuff).

Curious how the SU4100 will compare.

If you have a delay when typing it has nothing to do with your processor. And Youtube should play great. You should have no problem playing video at 720p with that machine. After all, netbooks with a lowly Atom processor and integrated graphics can play 720p...

Something is wrong with that computer.

Probably right. Definitely a delay between typing and when it gets to the screen, but only with IE, nothing else.

Think I'm going to return both and see what i3 based small form laptops come out, similar to the Acer 3820T fold which currently goes for $50 more than the SU4100 based DM3 I have coming from Staples.

Is it true the new DM3s have lazer etched graphics on the palmrests?

If so, that's a huge shame... minimalism is the best and that's one of the reasons why I went for the DM3, so simple but so beautiful.

Yes, they refreshed it with the same etch design found on the dm4t. On both the palm rest and the lid.

I agree with you about the minimalistic look. It looks kind of messy now.

    +1.
I like the minimalist design on mine so much I even took the stickers off. Now it's nothing but fancy gray aluminum all over except for the chrome trim. I love it.

So I bought a dm3-1035dx from microcenter for my mother for $351 after tax. Its an open box but I'm sure it'll work fine.

This will most likely be used for bills and internet usage. It should be fine for that right? Also, what is the real time use people get on the battery? I've seen reviews going from 4-9 hours so I'm a bit confused about that.

Gonna pick it up tomorrow morning!

And $351 is a fantastic price, even if it's open-box.

I was surprised when I saw it. I needed something cheap and simple but a netbook was too small for her and my laptop was too big (15 inch).

    13 inches is perfect.

    Hey guys,

I have some questions regarding this HP dm3 model:

HP Pavilion dm3-1020eg 33,8 cm Notebook: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör

Disregarding the fact that this page is in German, the specs don't say anything about switchable graphics
Sorry if this has already been cleared up but does this dm3 model with the SU4100 cpu support switchable graphics?
And if no, what kind of battery life could I expect with only the Nvidia 105m available? (Wireless active, some surfing etc.)

    Thanks in advance! :D

Also, HP didn't put switchable graphics in the intel versions until the 1100 series. Any of the 10XX models of the intel variety don't have switchable graphics. Only the amd's do.

When was the Dm3 updated to 1100 series? And a Su4100 with Nvidia graphics would probably get somewhere in the 5-6 hours ballpark

    Thanks for the replies guys!

So 5-6h with the SU4100+105m would be very nice^^

Do you guys think that this model without the switchable gpu would be worth the pricetag of 599€?
I don't really want to spend any more money and my only alternatives right now would be the Asus UL30VT which I don't like because of the build quality (already sent 1 back) or the Thinkpad Edge 13 with no dedicated graphics for basically the same price...

The only concern I have would be battery life... 5-6h would be nice. Not as good as the UL30VT but I'd definitely take a better build/support quality over battery life. But 5h would be the absolute minimum.

Any other possible deal breakers with the DM3 like bad build quality etc?

    Thanks again^^

DM3 has very good build quality except for the plastic ridge in front of the aluminium. The paint is coming of.

The touchpad is not so nice.

Otherwise I'm very happy with the DM3.

I think the touchpad is nice after it has been used for awhile. And I also like the fact that it's never going to get that gloss look to it like most plastic touchpads after a year or so of use.

The touch pad is workable. It does the job, but a Synaptics touchpad like on the Acer Timeline is way better. The touchpad on the Macbook Pro is even better than that.

With the DM3 I want to use an external mouse. With the Macbook Pro I don't want to use a mouse.

I recieved my new DM3z-2000 this week with the 1.5 GHZ K625 cpu and a HD4225/HD5430 combination GPU.

I'm quite pleased with the "etched" appearance design on the aluminum. Its all of course personal taste but I prefer this to bare aluminum.

The shiny silver trackpad is okay with me except for the buttons. A light touch to the surface glides smoothly but the buttons require to much effort to press. Fortunately I only use the right click.

I have not done a battery duration test yet but the heat disipation from fan vent is only mildly warm as is the underside after repeated graphics and cpu benchmark runs. The fan noise is also what I would consider mild.

So here are some benchmark results. I of course disabled the WIFI and virus checking and also killed all processes that had a name that started with the letters HP.

The Passmark CPU score was consistantly around 1038 so this compares favorably ahead of the SU4100.

The Passmark 3D GPU score was somewhat erratic and varied between 256 and 277. So I would give it a average value of 266. This was 22 below the posted value of this GPU on the Passmark site.

The 3Dmark scores for the GPUs were as follows:

    3DMark______HD4225_________HD5430

    2006_________1453___________3024
    2005_________2733___________4740
    2003_________3232___________6818
    2001_________7478___________12115

The 2006 value of 3024 was also below the posted value on the Notebook check site of 3468. Perhaps a high end CPU drives this up for other notebooks but I would not think it could make more than 10% difference.

So the "high end" GPU result for this DM3z is typically only twice the value of the embedded GPU. This seems either weak for the high end GPU or respectable for the embedded GPU. Either way this gives some power saving advantages for low to mid range (and older) gaming.

I already upgraded the 320G hard drive to 640G and discovered in the process that the recovery disks you burn are only good for the same size drive. So it was good to have a second desktop with Acronis True Image and XP handy to clone the drive. I left all the partitions the same size and it booted the new drive without problem.

I'll have to start loading some real apps now.

Is anyone else having problems with the new Flash 10.1 (official release, not the beta that has been out for months) upgrade? Every first video I play after loading the pc freezes, and I have to restart pc. After the initial restart, everything is okay, as long as I don't shut down, then it would happen again. This started as soon as I "upgraded" to the official release of Flash 10.1.
    Help!!!

His GPU would matter since 10.1 brings hardware acceleration and in some cases you need new drivers to have fully functional hardware acceleration.

Check your CPU usage with ctrl-alt-del. If it's hitting 95% I'd say hwa is not working.

What video are you using? I can check it with mine.

I've been very satisfied with my HP dm3 (1020ed) ever since buying it a few months back but there is still one thing bothering me.
I can't get my notebook to properly work with my parents Samsung HDTV.
I bought a HDMI cable, plugged it in on both sides of course, then I used the option under F4, choosing "projector only".
I can see my desktop then but my wallpaper doesn't stretch all the way. That's no problem for me but the screen has weird lines and when playing some mkv file it looks really bad. With snowy pixels and simply crappy. I don't know how to explain it well but it looks like someone has been using a selection tool around some of the actors.

I don't know what settings I should change to fix this problem, it should work shouldn't it? I though maybe the refreshrate of my notebook (40 Hz) wasn't the same as the TV's (60 Hz). But when I changed it on my notebook it was still not working. I really don't know what to try next.

I asked for some advice before here and even tried to google for an answer (dunno what to search for exactly though). Any got any ideas?
