Do you have anything running besides those videos? Like a resource intensive anti virus? And do you have the up to date drivers from ati?

Followed your advice anarkhy and now 1080p plays fullscreen at a good framerate at 60% CPU tops. Thanks to everyone for their help.

FWIF I'm currently on a Linux Mint 9 laptop. Specs: Core Duo @ 1.6 Ghz (not a Core 2 Duo), 2 gb RAM, and a cruddy Intel 950 GMA integrated graphics adapter. It's way weaker than your dm3. I can play the 720p link perfectly smoothly. The 1080p isn't watchable though of course.

    Hi guys.

need a bit of a help deciding on a laptop.

I currently own HP probook 4515s with AMD dual core.
I play games like Warcraft 3, AOE 2 and Medal of Honor: Breakthrough on it with my mates and HD videos like DVDs.

I will change this laptop because of two reasons:
    1. screen size is a bit much for my taste. i need something in realm of 13 -14 inches
    2. fan is quite audible

    I am currently lookgin @ DM3 with 7300/105M config.
can anyone give me feedback on any of these games and/or HD video playback realted with fan noise?
I am currently going through this thread and am @ page 70. still a long way to go :)
just in case no-one wrote about this yet, I would be greateful of any feedback:
fan noise (if you have dB, even better), 3dmark 6, vantage

    thanks again!

Edit: how does SU7300 play 1080p mkv files if anyone made those test... fan noise in particular is of interest to me. thanks again.

The dm3t isn't available on HP's site any more; they replaced it with the dm4t, which I would go for. It's a 14" and has a dvd drive but is only .2 lbs heavier and .5" longer. Also it has the new icore processors.

Where are you looking to get the dm3t you mentioned?

You may, however, still be able to find some models through third-party vendors.

It will play mkv files just fine.

thanks for the answer and yes I am from EU where DM3 is still available.

about the mkv, I was more or less wondering about the fan noise if any of the users have issues with that or merely the experience of fan noise while playing CPU intensive video formats like mkv.

I don't have many mkv files so I couldn't tell ya. But the fan never gets noticeably loud except for when gaming.
And can't you get GPU hardware acceleration with that format?

I dont know. That's basically what i'm here to find out. I'm not about to buy another laptop that drives me insane with a loud fan. I just gave up Vaio 'e' due to the fact that the fan is always on. I'm basically looking for any kind of info on 7300 performance with HD video in correlation with fan noise. I know this is rather specific info but there ya go :).

I got one of these: be.ez Macbook Sleeve
Fits very well and offers plenty of protection with memory foam. Lots of colors available too.

The ZeroShock III has been recommended many times in this thread also.

There are several good sleeves out there. I purchased a Caselogic PLS-13 Neoprene 13-Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve for a 2,300 mile motorcycle trip and got home with no scratches or other damage.

I bought one of these a couple days ago, the refurbished DM3-1039WM model from Best Buy for $429.99 CAD + tax which came to $481 - seemed like a decent price as all I needed was something with portability similar to a netbook but with a bit better stats so I can do some light gaming on mostly older games. I received it yesterday and spent 2 hours decrapifying/installing new drivers etc. and I quite enjoy it so far. The only thing I noticed is there seems to be a bit of flex to the right of the touchpad. When I press on the laptop in that one small part I can hear a bit of creaking so I am debating whether I should send it back and get a new one or if I should just keep it. So far I have had some success with undervolting (tested 8x multiplier at 0.85V and it's stable) and it seems to be doing what I need for everything else.

Try calling HP and seeing if they can ship you the screws. They should.

For a case I use a ZeroShock III and love it.

I play 1080p mkv files without any problems on mine using VLC media player.

And for the fan noise, none. Mine's always on but you never hear it, instead the harddrive is audible.

    @NiteWalker

I tried the online support, thinking I would be able to just quickly request them, but half an hour later, they want me to either A) Send it back to them or B) Take it to a local service center. The rep doesn't understand that it takes 20 seconds to put in the missing screws...so annoying that they want to inconvenience me over something so easy to fix

Hi at all !! I have read carefully i think, any Part of this forum that contain information about the HP DM3.

I have interest to buy this ultra-portable sooner but i wait the DM3-2xxx who gonna appear here in Canada.

There is 2-3 new model that gonna appear.

In all them, 2 retain my attention. The K325 and K625.

The K325 = Athlon at 1.3 Ghz VS The K625 = Turion at 1.5 Ghz

So my question is...... What i choice ??? Where the real difference ???

I know 200 Mhz dont gonna change many thing with the Turion.

But the Turion is not suppose to be low-performance VS Athlon stuff ???

Did the Athlon K325 gonna have a minus Score at Windows 7 performance indice because he's only 1.3 Ghz VS Turion 1.5 Ghz ???

If i look at AMD web site these 2 model have the exact same specification like 2Mo cache and these kind of thing.

But in my knowledge i know Turion = Sempron.

So i don't know how separate the 2 in my decision.

    Better have a Athlon at 1.3 or a Turion at 1.5 ???

I also read on the Net , AMD CPU are not able to do Dual-channel with memory asimetric.

That's tell me to upgrade at 4Gig of memory for being able to run memory at 400Mhz. Someone with 3Gig gonna have 333Mhz only possible if this fact is true.

Can you confirm this fact to me ???

New AMD CPU are maybe now able to do Dual-channel with asymetric memory module .... i don't know.

Thanks at all who participate at this forum because this place is awesome for someone who search information before to buy. :)

Turion processors typically have more L2 cache than their Athlon counterparts and therefore perform a little better. That Athlon 1.3 will have better battery life though.

Having different amounts of RAM in each slot will not slow down frequency. But it will prevent you from running in dual-channel mode. Dual channel accounts for about a 2%-5% performance boost so it's not a huge deal.

Ok i just verify my word on HP US web site and customised a dm3-2xxx for the fun and ....YES... Athlon K325 AND Turion K625 have the same amount of Memory Cache = 2mo

In the optic of having 2 CPU with the same memory cache, we can probably tell so the only difference gonna be the CPU speed Yes ???

Did Athlon CPU do more calcul by second than the Turion ???

If i refer to their web site.... the Turion seem to be the Superior because he worth 50$ more $$ US.

I really don't know if that's a good thing to pay more for near the same and like you said, in the better case... the 1.3 gonna be great on battery life.

So NoW... let's bring this baby when possible if HP can decide them to put this model on their Canadian web site.

Or see if store gonna have it somewhere soon..... :D

If battery life is an important factor for you, maybe you should look at the intel versions of the dm3? They have significantly better battery life.

I would also go back to the old drivers if they were helping keep it cool. I just bought one and installed 10.6 and noticed it gets pretty hot, I am going to try the 10.5 drivers and see if they are any better when i get home from work later.

I purchased a DM3-2010US recently as a graduation gift for my niece and it seems that video playback is barely audible, almost impossible to hear, when using the integrated speakers at max volume. Is this a common problem with this unit?

In other words, if we return it and get a replacement, is it likely to have the same problem?

I loved the form factor and general feel of the laptop.

However, we were extremely disappointed in the quality of the touchpad. It seems that the touchpad driver for this unit was released by a company called ALPS, and not the usual Synaptics. The ALPS touchpad does not allow momentum glide and the multi-touch gesture functionality is much more clumsy and limited than the Synaptics touchpad, which is not great, either.

I don't like the touch pad. Over time you can get used to it but it will remain worse than Synpatics.

The playback isn't very loud but I definitely wouldn't call it 'barely audible'.

As a workaround you can make it louder by adjusting the equalizer.

The touchpad isn't the greatest, but I'm fine with it.

Hi. I am new here. Am looking at Dm3 1040us on amazon, and am wondering if its processor "1.3GHz Intel Pentium SU4100 Processor", is any better or higher than my current HP dv6871us' (Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 / 1.83 GHz)? (Sorry I am not in the know when it comes to these things) I am down to two choices: dm3 or dm4 (intel processors). Just need to know if the dm3 is any faster than what i have now :)

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ione, the CPU is slower. You can compare Core 2 Duos on clockspeed.

But a CPU is rarely the bottleneck during normal computer usage.

aww. thank you for your quick response, phil. i love the power of the dm4 but just couldn't resist the all-metal look of the dm3...... sooo sleeky. it would've been nicer if the dm4 didn't have that stream design look and pink-tint feel to it. :(

Hi ione. I agree with him that the Core 2 Duo T5550 @ 1.83 GHz clockspeed has more power, than the weak SU4100 @ 1.3 GHz. But I don't agree that the processor (CPU) is rarely the bottleneck during normal computer usage. In fact, you won't have a powerful fast computer if you have a weak processor, since the processor is the main unit in the computer that handles all the data processing. If it's weak and at a low clockspeed, that means the data will be processed slower, resulting in that you will experience slow loading times and lag. I can confirm this because I do have the HP DM3 and I'm very disappointed with it. It has 4 GB DDR3 RAM, Nvidia G105M, a 7200 RPM harddrive but it has the SU4100 which is the weakest processor I have EVER had. I was sceptic when I saw it in the shop, but they told me it's powerful enough for normal tasks like internet browsing, light gaming and writing documents. And Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. They lied. The bootup is the only thing I find posive with this laptop, thanks to the 7200 RPM (rotations per minute) harddrive. It boots in like 1 minute. But it's pretty slow when I load up Word, internet browsing. It takes about 30 seconds average, but then the pages isn't even done loading. And it lags when I play games like Rappelz on it. I can honestly say I miss my old laptop, Acer with Windows Vista Home Premium, it had a 5400 RMP harddrive, 3 GB DDR3 RAM, Nvidia 512 MB (I don't remember the exact model) and a Core 2 Duo T9300 @ 2,5 GHz. It booted in like 40 seconds. Everything loaded alot smoother and faster, it opened my web browser with fully loaded pages in like 3 seconds. Rappelz and other games ran flawless on high (not maximum). Sadly it died after 9 months of daily use. So now I'm stuck with my dang slow HP DM3, and what I really hate is that it uses over 10 minutes to load pages with hundreds of comments. And just as bad, it's uncomfortable to rest your wrist at the bottom left side of the laptop, because of the middle-warm heat. Thanks to the SU4100. I would definitely choose the DM4 over this, the Core i5 is more powerful than Core 2 Duo, in fact I read somewhere that an i5 @ 2,4 GHz is over 7 times more powerful than SU4100 @ 1,3 GHz. I wouldn't mind the pinkish color at all, it's not that pink and it changes to campagne and silver in the right light and area, and I would rather have a working computer with a decent speed. HP DM3 was a bad choice for me.

Snowneko, what you think is caused by your CPU is probably caused by a poor install by HP.

After doing a clean install my DM3 SU4100 boots Windows 7 in 10.9 seconds with an SSD, in 25 seconds with a 7200rpm drive. As shown here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/windows-os-software/459125-post-your-windows-7-boot-time.html

As you can see booting and loading applications is not CPU bound. Just like browsing the web, watching movies or office programs aren't bound by the CPU.

The only things that will go significantly faster with a faster CPU are applications that max out the CPU, like unzipping, decoding or math calculations.

Does anyone know where to still find an HP DM3t with the 105m graphics besides ebay?

I am looking for one because while I absolutely love the DM3z, I need better battery life for this upcoming school year, 4 hours isn't going to cut it. I need more like 7-8. I am looking specifically for the model with nVidia graphics and SP9300.

Is there anyway to switch the graphics between the 105m and 4500mhd? What is the realistic battery life?

Yes, it's switchable. Work pretty much the same as the ATI discrete graphics option. There's a little nVidia icon in the tray that reports the current mode being used. The only difference is, you can only switch by choosing power saver mode.
In earlier models (rev. 1), I don't think graphics cards were switchable.
