I apologize in advance if this has been asked and answered, but my searches couldnt find the answer i was looking for...
If I take out the HD and replace with a SSD (such as the ocz agility2 90gb, that is on newegg for 159 after mir) will i lose the splashtop interface that HP provided?
I dont care about the restore partition, but the "instant on" os is surprisingly useful...
-
If you use the latest version of Acronis True Image you can keep your existing installation.
I have zero experience with splashtop though, is it in the BIOS or on the hard drive? -
From what I've previously read about instant-on OS, it's works within the motherboard's BIOS. So a new SDD or HDD shouldn't affect it.
But it is advisable to make a back-up image of your HDD. If you have a Western Digital drive, you can download Acronis True Image for free from WD's website. -
I believe earlier in this thread someone said that doing a clean install messed up their QuickWeb. Mine never came with it, so I can't say one way or the other, but seeing that you can't download it via Drivers & Support probably points towards Mobo and maybe even part of a partition for it to work.
-
That is what I use. I also have a Logtiech Lapdesk N315. Great mouse good battery life as well. I use the Performance Mouse MX on my desktop as well. -
The dm3-1000 never come with QuickWeb ... however the dm3-3000 comes with QuickWeb. It does not reside in the mobo. Clean install will messed it up. There is a installation package weights about 3GB in their swsetup, I saved it and installed it after a fresh install and it works again.
-
Will Splashtop be intact if i relace HD? - HP Support Forum
the answer they gave there is just about the same as what you said... as per Rakhmad
"Yes you can as long as you save C:\swsetup folder.
In that folder there is splashtop installer for your notebook. Only few models listed QuickWeb software in HP fpt site." -
QuickWeb is installed on the dm3t-1100 and newer models, btw.

Anyone have a recommendation on where to find the battery for my Dm3t-1000? Hp doesn't sell them anymore and I would prefer to buy from a reputable dealer in the future.
-
I'm a little annoyed now that they don't sell the battery anymore... Isn't the battery basically the same as the one in the newer dm3t (3000)? That means that they no longer sell the battery for all 3 series?
Just doesn't make sense to me. Hopefully it'll pop up on the site again. -
Ebay has lots of DM3 batteries

Thanks Phil.
As for the -3000 battery, I do not think its the same.

Oops my bad.
Though why do they continue to sell the dv3 batteries and have discontinued the dm3's? (Which is newer.) I guess I better start looking on ebay. -
How do you know if you have quick web, and if you don't, can you download it?
-
mine shows as a bios option.. dm3 2000us

Hello, I bought this machine from Best buy !
It was refurbished with 3 months warranty. Price was 380 + TAX
Nice deal !

You all are claiming a battery life of 6 hours while i am getting just 3 hours @ max
Secondly, it freezes some time. Mostly while playing videos. Any idea what to do ? -
punk, undervolting will help battery life.
a clean install may help with the freezes -
PLEASE: Trackpad help!
I have a DM3-1030US bought in 2009, and the Track-Pad starts jumping around every now and then or sometimes it stops working entirely! Please, does anyone know what can be done?
I have sent it in for warranty...I have updated drivers, rolled back drivers, updated the bios, wiped the computer, turned off mutli-touch etc...NOTHING helps!
Thanks to anyone who can help me! -
I have that sometimes where the touch just doesn't move right. Turning the pad off and on usually fixes it.
-
Which DM3 (1000-2000-3000) has NO FLEX at all ?
-
My -1000 has minimal flex but it can change depending on the mood of the person who assembled it
-
I bought the same machine from Best Buy (but not as good of a price
)
Battery life is definitely exxagerated but it depends on what you are doing, how bright your screen is etc. Half brightness screen typing on word is a lot different than playing games or ripping CDs at full brightness etc.
Anyway, I never had any freezing problems, but the first thing I did when I got mine is uninstall or disable all the HP crap software that runs in the background. There is a system checker, a media helper, and some other stuff. You don't need any of it. -
To punk,
I don't think anyone here is claiming 6 hours.
I can squeeze about 5.25 hours with my computer undervolted, with one core turned off, the other core running at 800mhz, screen brightness low, bluetooth turned off.
That can handle basic web browsing and word typing, but it is noticeably slow that way. -
My Dm3 can't be the only one with a track-pad that is jumpy or even non-responsive every now and then...how come nobody has figured out a solution yet?
As for people considering a Dm3 of any kind...if they are still using the ALPS touchpad, SAVE YOUR MONEY and save yourself the most anoying trackpad ever made.
I have always been happy with HP, but this finicky ALPS touchpad as serious driver issues or something which they never fixed (not to mention the finish on the pad isn't the best...though you do get used to it), -
Have you uninstalled the ALPS drivers and tried using the default Microsoft drivers?
-
The older dm3s do have finicky touchpads (1000 and 2000), though it can be easily be fixed with the installation of newer and better drivers. And yes, the finish is not the best but you do get used to it.
As for "considering a dm3 of any kind" the newer 3000 version does have an improved touchpad concerning the finish and drivers. However the left and right mouse buttons are now integrated into the pad. (Like most newer HP laptops) -
there are dell drivers that work with the alps pad listed a few pages back. maybe give those a try?

Are there any on screen display drivers yet? I reformatted when I first got it and to date I haven't been able to get the OSD to show up.
-
What is undervolting ?
Secondly, have you guys made any recovery DVDS ?
So you guys suggest that I should format every thing. Re partition and install with another independent DVD which just got OS ? -
The OSD is part of the MediaSmart suite. If you reformatted to remove all the HP junk, I doubt you would want to install the whole suite just to have the OSD.
Alternatively, you can use 3rd party OSD applications. -
There is a gigantic thread on Undervolting in the Hardware section of the forum.
Undervolting is basically giving less energy to the processor. This might sound bad or hurtful to the processor, but it isn't. Processor companies give their processors way too much power with the standard configuration. Undervolting also doesn't effect performance. -
Wow, a lot of pages here... I agree with some that a new thread for the most recent dm3t would be a good idea to some. Hard to find the right answers...
What kind of performance boost would I see with the 160gb ssd in regards to heat, battery life, and windows 7 operation? Is this just a waste of money for the moment as I should wait for another six to eight months for the price to go down on ssds or when they revamp the series again?
I know the old dm3 had no battery meter for "time left." How about the new one? -
For everyday performance, you WILL notice it.
For heat, you will NOT notice it.
For battery life, you will get about 10-20 minutes more.
SSD prices are going down rapidly, just make sure you get one of the good SSDs. There are SSDs that are great, and others that start out great but within a year permanently slow down. -

OK, but what abou the SSD hp is currently offering on their site? Good one, bad one? Save the money and just get the 500gb 7200? -

-
I don't know which ones HP offers, but I am sure someone else does.
It is usually cheaper/better to just buy stock RAM or Hard Drives and upgrade them yourself from a third party. -
I believe its a Intel G2 drive, or it was.
-
I'm glad the new dm3 touchpads are different. But for the old Dm3s, the updated HP/Alps drivers do not fix it. I have tried them all.
Thanks to those who point to Dell...i have been planning on trying the drivers for another manufacturer. Hopefully that will work. The HP drivers are usable, but I refuse to settle for a trackpad that is finicky even if it is only every so often -
anyone know how fast the ddr3 on the dm3z runs? im getting conflicting information from cpuz and amd overdrive. Overdrive seems to think it runs 1333, while cpuz reports 400 (or 800 with ram:fsb 2:1). i just threw in crucial 1066mhz and im not sure if it is fast enough for this machine.
any help is appreciated. -
Im pretty sure its 1066, although you wouldn't see much(if any) of a performance difference between 1333 and 1066
-
i guess its not even 1066.. looks like its ddr3 800 (for power savings?). after install both cpuz and overdrive are reporting a 400mhz frequency.
thanks for your help.Attached Files:

Hey guys, I have a question:
Does the HP DM3z 1030us with the ATI Radeon 3200HD Graphics powerful enough to run a 2560x1600 (or similar) display? -
i am able to run a 1920x1080p youtube clip without stutter with integrated graphics enabled. the max my tv takes over hdmi is 1080p, sorry i dont know about higher than that, but for that res i had no overscan/stutter issues at all.
this is the clip i ran

Here's a interesting one, I've brought this laptop sometime in April over eBay, it was a brand new machine and came with the DVD drive. When I first got it, I checked within the bios settings for various things and I noticed it said "Warranty Start Date 4/19/2010", but last month when I updated the bios from HPs website, now it states the warranty is ending sometime this month.
I have proof from paypal and eBay of when this laptop was purchased and I was the first owner as I took off the seal of the plastic bag that the laptops enclosed in when it's in the box, and it said my warranty starts on April.
I registered the laptop via HP over the phone and they said my warranty ends this month. I didn't call them and ask them yet as i wanted to see what you guys take on this.
Also, if this laptop is manufactored over a year ago, would it have any effects on the battery? When I first brought it, I would/could squeeze out about 5 hours of light to moderate usage of a single charge. Now it's gotten lower, I can get about 3.5 hours out of a charge with same usage, only web browsing and Microsoft office with lowest brightness. I know batterys tend to die out over time, but never this quick, I've only had this for 7 months now. I've checked Battery monitor when I first got the laptop and it showed battery wear of 1.9% and now it's 3.5%... That's pretty quick, no?
Thanks. -
That doesn't seem like much wear, I got my Dm3t in late December last year and I'm currently at 17% wear according to HWMonitor. As for HP I would call to ask when the warranty was started and if it wasn't near your purchase date I would call the seller and request reimbursement for a year worth of extended warranty.
-
I'd say that is reasonable for almost a year worth of use. I discharge/recharge daily, and I got my machine in early September. Hwmonitor says my wear is 12% (49k out of 56 remaining).
-
it probably would have been a good idea to ask about this before i bought it... but... anyone have any experience with these silicone keyboard protectors? i bought one from ebay because i noticed dust/hair/etc getting underneath the keys of my kb. it was only 3 dollars (including shipping) and I am not expecting anything high quality... Just curious if anyone has tried them and how they affect the feedback from the keyboard.
Keyboard Cover Skin Protector HP Pavilion DM3 DM3T DM3Z - eBay (item 260678484236 end time Dec-14-10 08:13:14 PST)
for $3.60 if its not the best i guess its not a huge loss, but I want to keep the keyboard in decent shape..
any feedback would be appreciated. -
^I don't have any experience with the keyboard protector; though I almost purchased one. I believe the only downfall with having silicone cover your kb is that it may be a different typing experience.
Keep us updated. -
Ive seen a lot of people use them with their MBP's and they just seem like a nuisance to me unless your fingers aren't clean
