If you're going to spray it with anything you're have to take it all apart anyway, besides its not that bad to take apart.
-
Agreed. The chipping on my chrome lining isn't that bad yet. I'll probably do the Rhino paint sometime in the next two years. I'm not worried about the how thick it'll go on, as long as it's uniform and as durable as advertised.
-
I have it!
And I love it (got the wrong color, but whatever).
It's excellent protection without going to a hard case, and the zippers are no problem due to the "lips" on the edges. -
Right. I'm just saying I wouldn't go through the trouble to replace it with new chrome trim just to have to worry about it chipping again and having to treat it gingerly for fear of scratching it.
But if you just wanted to make it look nice long enough to sell it, that would make sense.
I would probably go with a black gloss epoxy that should be really durable, and if it ever did chip it would be hard to notice since the plastic is black under the black paint. -
If any of you guys decide to paint it, tell us how it turns out.
-
What color did you order/end up with gizmodian? And +1 to the keeping us informed on your painting diy.
-
I got the Pepper one, which actually looks more like purple-ish grey. If I had known, I'd have gone for the black multicolor/striped one, or just the black/white one.
-
So I probably want to get one of the old dm3. Do you guys know of any good deals out there, say 500 or less? I tried ebay, but most of the good deals are "new but open box" and I don't know if I can trust these deals. Has anyone bought an open box from ebay before, and did he have any problems later? thanks
-
Look at your local Craigslist, ebay has some good deals, but I personally think ebay and paypal is a pain in the to deal with from my experiences.
Otherwise the HP refurbished store might carry some, their stock is completely random so keep on checking them out.
I personally wouldn't pay more than $300 for a stock AMD model or $350 for a stock Intel model. Add more for the added specs you want such as graphics card, upgraded processor, etc. -
Since I bought the new dm3, I am selling my old dm3
HP dm3t / Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 / 320GB HDD / 4GB RAM - eBay (item 190448395003 end time Oct-23-10 20:53:06 PDT) -
I'm considering a second hand DM3 with AMD X2 L335.
How much battery life can I expect with low brightness, wifi on? -
On a DM3z with AMD X3 L625 I had before, I got a little over 3 hours at 50% brightness, wi-fi, doing normal web surfing with a few flash videos (this was before flash 10.1, btw).
So I figure you should get at least 3.5 hours. -
Thanks. Can I improve it through undervolting?
-
I have an AMD DM3z with the L335 processor.
With RMClock I disabled a core, undervolted it to .7125v, turned the brightness all the way down, and disabled Bluetooth with wifi on I get about 4.5 hours...
You must disable flash in your browser... Flash is a battery killer.
It is noticeably slow that way but it's fast enough for word processing when I'm taking class notes and basic web browsing at the same time. -
anyone use AMD overdrive to undervolt. I am trying it, but i cant get below .9150v on my k625... i wonder if RM clock would let me set it lower (if its a software thing as opposed to being the lower limit of my proc).
with RM clock, how low can you set the voltage on the l335 with stock clocks(both cores active)? -
With the highest clock settings, I can undervolt it to .8000v with it being stable.
-
Interesting stuff. I'll try it once I get it.
By the way, I tried covering the trim of my old DM3 with a silver marker but that didn't work very well.
Originally I thought the damage was caused by a zipper. Somebody else told it is caused by heat and transpiration. I think he was right. The damage started when I was in Thailand and it happened on both sides where my wrists touched the trim.
I'd like to make sure not to damage my new DM3. Any thoughts on how to are welcome. I think I should apply a protective layer on the trim. Maybe transparent tape. -
Maybe one of those clear coat paint protectors? Although it seems kind of odd that sweat + heat would cause it to peel. How long did you use it in Thailand?
-
Two months. 2 minutes distance from the beach. The sunscreen I was wearing may have something to do with it too.
It didn't believe it either at first, but the fact that the the trim peeled off left and right, in the areas where my wrists were makes it very plausible. -
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
I use to have an DM3 with an L335 , rmclock had a tenancy to bsod the the notebook as it changed multipliers , even though i tested them all at 100% with wprime without a problem, at almost idle it just use to bsod randomly , and i kept the voltage quite high, maybe it was just my L335 being awkward.
-
Yea the chemicals in sun screen could be to blame, and it makes more sense than my original assessment of "Phil sweats acid!"
-
Could be, my right side is peeling/scratching off too, and I always have my right palm on the trim and my fingers on the trackpad. But it is also the scratches cause I have scratches all over my right and left usb ports. But then again, I'm usually careless when I plug in usb devices.
-
That might work. It might be hard to get it to look neat, as you would have to cut holes for all your ports. Another concern might be that you pull all the chrome off if you ever remove the tape.
Clearcoat might be good too, but masking so that you only get it on the chrome sounds difficult.
If anyone tries anything like that, let us know how it goes! -
I would just like to see a picture of the DM3 with the chrome paint scraped off before I attempt it.
-
Somebody, PLEASE; Abuse your dm3.
-
I think there is a picture, somewhere in the previous 328 pages of this thread. Good luck!
-
This is a picture Phil posted a ways back (Page 308)
-
I think he is looking for an example of all the chrome stripped off to see how it looks with the trim in plain black plastic. -
so am looking for a replacement screen for my cracked old dm3. I found this at amazon Amazon.com: Brand New 13.3" WXGA Glossy Laptop LCD LED Screen For HP Pavilion DM3-1020CA: Everything Else and will want someone to confirm if it will work for the dm-1040us (it says this one is for the dm3-1020ca).

 :confused2:
Did you ever get san answer for this question? I would like to hear my puter above my breathing. It's just so quite.

SGP HP Pavilion DM3 Laptop Skin - Carbon
Anyone purchase this for their dm3? I'd like to know you're take on it.
(Texture, quality, etc.) -
$21 just for the lid? They really are beating people over the head.
-
I think the original lid of the DM3 is one of the best looking lids of any laptop.
-
Agree. I wouldn't cover it up with a sticker. For my ugly gray plastic Compaq, on the other hand, fake carbon fiber would be an improvement.
All you need is some carbon look vinyl. there are lots of you tube videos on how to cover your lap top, like this one:
YouTube - Wrapping a netbook with 3M carbon fiber-look vinyl -
Its got to work. The different model numbers are just code for the configurations (processor, HD size, bluetooth etc), and where the laptop was sold (CA=canada, us= usa, wm=walmart, etc.)

Nice driver for the Alps Touchpad: Dell_Multi-Touch-Touchpad_A05_R279834.exe
-
In one what way is it better than the standard windows one? Also, how did you find it? Do you just install random trackpad drivers lol.
-
Well the standard Windows driver works well but has several drawbacks: it can't be set very fast and it doesn't have two finger scrolling.
How did I find it? by searching for the latest Alps driver.
I don't currently own a DM3 so I can't test it. -
I got a chance to try out those drivers. I am gonna leave them on for about a week and see if they work better. I like that dell included so many ways to tweak the touchpad, circular scrolling, a four finger gesture (minimize all) and a few ways to assign different clicks to the mouse buttons.

there is a new video driver ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

Looking for a wireless laser mouse for my dm3. Looking for one that matches well with the lappy's looks.
Any ideas would greatly be appreciated. -
I was looking at the Microsoft Mobile Mouse 3000 but then decided I didn't really need it as I only use my laptop on the go and rarely at a desk.
-
What's your take on the Microsoft Touch Mouse? I like how it looks..
-
I have the Microsoft Mini Explorer. I think the colors match pretty nicely. Chrome bottom edges, and the top and sides are grey with black buttons and a black rubberized grip area. The only con is the usb transceiver isn't "micro" sized.
What's the Touch Mouse? Do you mean the Arc Touch coming in December?
If so, I do like the concept and looks of it. But I don't think I can live without back/forward buttons. -
Hmm I very much do like the Microsoft Mini Explorer. It does match pretty nicely and its form factor appeals to me. Though I wouldn't have an issue going without back/forward buttons because I normally use alt+left/right.
I currently have this Microsoft Wireless Notebook Mouse
Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 - 3-btn Mouse - Wireless - RF
that has just begun to die on me.
The Arc Touch comes in December? So what's the deal with this review?
Microsoft Arc Touch Review - Mice - CNET Reviews -
Its pre-reviewed to build some hype.
-
Makes sense. I'll look into your suggestions though. Thanks guys.
-
Wait! I've used the Logitech Anywhere MX at a friends house and I gotta tell you, it's awesome. It feels just like my Revolution MX I have at home for my desktop but in a smaller lighter package.
It works everywhere, even on glass (didn't get to test though) but it's a awesome piece of equipment imo. -
Oh, btw, if price is a factor, Newegg and other online retailers often sell the Mini Explorer Mouse for less than $30 on sale.
-
Thanks again guys. I'm putting the price cap at around $100. Looking to buy anytime from now to after the New Year. Might find a good post-Xmas deal.
