Answer to #1 is yeah, you can retrieve it by installing the HP support software and hitting fn + esc... this will give you the serial number of your machine...
for #2 you should just do the Hp product detection (an active X control) and see what drivers it suggests.. then you can pick which ones you need to install (do this at hp.com/support)
#3 if you want multi touch and the touchpad toggle button to work then install the alps driver from the Hp site. others prefer the standard microsoft driver but the catch is the toggle may not work.
#4- maybe you want to hide the partitions from windows (so they dont show in my computer etc). Just right click on your my computer hit manage->disk managment. from here right click on the drive you want hidden and select change drive letter and path, then remove the drive letter and it should be hidden.

Has anyone touched their trim up with a chrome tip yet?
-
Nope.
Honestly, I think it would be a lot easier and better if, instead of touching up the chrome, you just scraped it all off. The plastic piece is just one solid color of black, and it would go a lot better with the keys and bezel. -
Hmm, I'm not so sure. It might just look like scratched black plastic! Guinea pig anyone?
-
Has anyone had any problem with the screen hinges? I noticed one of mine is a tad loose, and both have a half centimeter gap between where the plastic wraps around the actual hinge. Is the gap standard and do you think its worth the time opening the whole thing up to fix?
-
Nope. Hinges are solid for me.
-
Just picked up a clearance DM3-1112sa from Amazon UK for £240...
Quick question about RAM. It comes only with 2GB RAM and I am looking to upgrade it. Crucial indicates it uses DDR2-800 CL6 (CAS Latency 6) RAM.
If I were to put in a 2x2GB DDR2-800 CL5 RAM inside it, would it work? They are Kingston ValueRAM branded. Thanks -
also what is everyone using to measure temps?
-
I prefer to use CPUID Hardware Monitor.
-
After a bit of further inspect I'm starting to think the gap in the hinge covering plastics is from when I had HP fix the display in the past. It really seems like more cosmetic than structural but its still kinda disappointing at how many problems I've had from poor warranty work.
-
if your machine is a dm3z then i'd say install amd overdrive. it will give you clocks, temps and the ability to adjust voltage.
-
Quick question for dm3z users:
Where have you been getting your video card driver updates for the Radeon HD 3200, and if possible, could you post a link to the latest applicable driver for our video cards (I know, technically a chip)?
I went to Search Drivers and Downloads, then went under 'chipsets' to click ATI Radeon™ HD 3200 (780G) or AMD Support Search, and then clicked what appeared to be the latest driver for Windows 7 64-bit.
Yet, dxdiag reports that my driver version is still 8.632.1.2000 and from 8/18/2009.
This is what I get in the Catalyst Control Center under Information -> Software:
...I think I might've screwed up somewhere in the process, or the reality is that 8/18/2009 was really the last update for Radeon HD 3200.
So what should I do? Are the new drivers (if there are even any) functional? What search terms should I be using to find the latest updates?
Halp! XD -
Is anyone using anything to make the touchpad less sensitive?
-
Damnit, I really love this machine, but really want a fast chip also. Does internet explorer feel laggy or choppy for you guys at all?
-
I have abandoned IE altogether a long time ago. No matter what machine I use (be it desktop or netbook) I always experience problems regarding speed, performance, loading times... etc.
I have found two alternatives: Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. I use Chrome for basic web surfing and Firefox when I am working on website building. I haven't looked back since and never will.
Bottom Line: don't use IE. -
It works fine for me. But Firefox works so much better... -
Hello I am having a hard time trying to boot from a usb and as we all know there is no disc drive so I cant just throw the disc in I am trying to dual boot my dm3 that is currently running windows 7 ultimate I have made the new partition and made the boot usb drive and also made sure that the bios is set to boot from usb but it just wont boot from the @^%$^ thing and I am gettoing frutrated and dont want to end up smashing it so could someone please HELP !
-
Sorry, this probably isn't of any actual help, but I gotta agree with the two others who responded to your question. I never use IE (except when I absolutely have to). Instead, I use Chrome. It's the fastest, lightest, browser out there.

Does anyone what CPU I could upgrade my dm3-1030ea to please?
It currently has its' stock 1.6Ghz
Many thanks in advance
Edit:
Think I may have just answered my own questions: SP9300
Can anyone confirm please?
Thanks -
According to the HP spec sheet for the dm3-1030ea, it has a 1.6GHz AMD Athlon Neo X2 Dual-Core Processor for Ultrathin Notebooks L335 which is a BGA processor meaning it should be soldered to the motherboard which makes upgrades not possible (or atleast extermely difficult). Plus, the SP9300 which is an Intel cpu & so wont be compatible with the AMD socket/chipset.

Thanks for the info miner.

Anyone scrape off the chrome trim yet?
If so, pictures? -
Not that, but I've hit a year and a month with this laptop already, and I'm planning on keeping this, unlike my previous laptops, I sell them when I'm bored, this is just too good.
Other than that, my left mouse button's chrome part started peeling off where I use to press the button, I can attach a picture later on, but has it started happening to anyone else? And also, does the mousepad show wear? -
I've had mine for 1 year 3 months and used it for 2 complete semesters without much wear. The trim hasn't worn and neither has the trackpad, hopefully it will stay that way.
-
Same here.
Only tiny bits have fallen off the trim, but you can hardly see them.
Trackpad looks good as new. I've had mine for over a year now. -
Hey guys.. My dm3t is still kicking strong. Seriously, the best laptop I've ever owned. But I used it so much that the battery life is starting to diminish. I get ~80% of the original capacity, and under load it seems to drain quicker.
Anyway.. I was just curious if you guys have a particular favorite offbrand you buy your batteries from, or if there was anything you think I should consider before I pick one up. Thanks. -
Third-party batteries are not recommended.
The best choice would be to buy one directly from HP. -
Hi guys and gals, finally going to get around to doing a clean install and I'm stuck on step #2 of Phil's guide. The link to the MS USB tool no longer works, any help?
Thanks -
A quick google search helps out a lot. Here you go

Any updates on the replacement backlit keyboard for the dm3t 1xxx? This really would be a big improvement! Does it actually have backlit keys?
-
Hi guys, just want share my overclock of HD4330 in dm3-1120ec
With default ntb config I couldn't pass 550/800, but when I increased voltage via BIOS editing (system BIOS, extract it, I found VGA bios and open in RBE, then save everything and flash via fla$hit) from 0.95V to 1.05V I've got this
Now I'm looking for way to edit HD3200 BIOS, RBE couldn't find clock setting, but with AMD GPU Tool underclocking gained next 20-30 minutes of battery life (but need run it after every reboot) -
Since I got a tablet, I've been using my dm3 1044nr only every other week or so. And when I turn it on the battery is either very low or dead. So I plug in the charger, and charge the battery until it's full.
Well, this past weekend, the battery was dead again, so I plugged in the charger. But this time it wouldn't charge. Crap.
So I went to HP's website to order a new battery, but I couldn't find one for my 1044nr. It may be there, but it's hidden and I can't find it.
So, with a little bit of trepidation, I ordered a new battery here:
6CELL HP Pavilion dm3-1044nr Battery @ Replacement battery for HP Pavilion dm3-1044nr laptop battery
It seems like a reputable company and they offer a one-year warranty.
Hopefully, I won't have any problems with it. -
Has anyone successfully swapped out the 7200 RPM HDD in an early model DM3 (i.e. 10** series) for an SSD? If so, which brand of SSD and how smooth was the transition? My HDD just died and I'd like to replace it with an SSD. I've been looking at either the OCZ Vertex 2 or the new SAMSUNG but want to be sure they'll actually work in the PC before I order one.
Thanks in advance. -
I seem to be having the same problem with my Dm3t. Overnight turned off, and the battery seems to drain substantially more than it should.
As for a SSD in a Dm3t, really any model should be fine although it doesn't support sata 6gb/s. -
I've removed the 7200 RPM HDD from my DM3 1100, and bought an OCZ Vertex 2 (120GB), so far it's working great.
At first I had this weird problem, one random time the notebook wouldn't recognize the drive (that happened one week after I first started to use the SSD), so I did a clean install, updated the BIOS and been happily using it for the last 4 months. -
Anyone yet figured out a way to overclock the su4100 cpu yet?
I feel like it's starting to slow down and really don't want to do reinstall of Windows. -
I'd recommend a clean install of Windows over overclocking anyday.
-
Yeah, that's true but then again, I don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my applications again and backing up data and such.
Back when I first had my eye on this laptop, I was excited that I got the intel verison of it, now I want the AMD verison just because of the graphics chip and it should run a lot better than this. -
Hello Everyone.
I just bought DM3 - 1048la Slightly Used
The Specs are:
C2D Intel UC7300 1.3Ghz
3Gb Ram
320Gb HDD
Intell 4500 Integrated Graphics
The Condition of the Notebook is just like new....
I bought it for 377 US$
So My Question is.... Is my purchase good for the bucks?
I wanted a small, portable with good battery laptop.
This seemed nice to me.
Comment.
PS... This is my first post at this forum

My wireless card has stopped working on this? Windows can see it but it can't see any wireless networks and the button on the right is always orange (can't change it to blue). Can this be fixed or replaced?
-
@kushty
It's a common problem for Linux users. If you forget to turn the wifi on before shutting down the system, it will become soft-bricked.
BIOS in this notebook is a piece of sh*t. Linux is more sensitive for hardware errors than Windoze so Linux users on DM3 experience a lot of problems. IMO the most annoying is that wifi firmware-loading problem. Among others are messed up hardware virtualization (causing lots of problems with memory mapping and sometimes even kernel panicks), DRM on Intel GPU, something with DMA and numerous problems with ACPI and power management.
EOT
Solution for the wifi problem is quite easy when you have the newest BIOS. To fix it you have to update your BIOS (if you haven't done it before), enter the BIOS settings and restore defaults. After restart your wifi will be fixed.
On older BIOSes it was more complicated. I had to remove the CMOS battery, remove the wifi card, plug-in battery and power up the notebook without wifi. Then switch if off and place the wifi back in it's slot. -
When I ran into this problem I just placed tape on one of the pins.
-
Thanks for the reply. I tried powering down but I didn't plug out the wireless card and boot up. Anyway, I sorted it by putting tape over one of the pins. If I can be bothered some time I will do the things you suggest as it is probably affecting my battery having the wireless card turned 'on' all the time, which I think is what taping the pin does.
-
You can just turn off your WLAN card by using Windows Mobility Center (Windows Key + X). Taping the pin negates turning off the WLAN card physically (WLAN button on right side).
-
I read that once you've taped the pin you can never actually turn it off?! As in, even when it's 'off' in Windows it's still drawing power?!
I guess it wouldn't be connecting and communicating with anything though. -
Beats me. Because I notice better battery life when I turn it off through Windows.
-
Yea, it must help to some degree because it isn't actively communicating with anything.
-
Well best of luck to you.
Cheers. -
I know this thread hasn't been updated in a while but I've got a few win 8 questions:
Does anyone know where I can find a Windows 8 alps trackpad driver for the dm3 which doesn't break the trackpad on/off switch? Managed to find one which enables the win8 gestures but it's really annoying having a switch which doesn't work - especially when typing.
Also, any idea how to get the 'lock' button (f5) to work in win8?
The bluetooth works, but I can't find any way to disable it (other than in device manager)? The old hp wireless assistant doesn't work....
Battery life.... definitely lower than with windows 7 - although I guess my battery is a bit old now
Finally, the legacy win8 graphics drivers listed on the amd website refuse to install on my dm3, anyone managed to get around this? The drivers provided in windows work, but I have a feeling that installing the amd drivers may help the battery life issues I've been having in win8....
If anyone's interested windows 8 runs pretty well on the dm3, but make sure you do a clean install/use the refresh feature in win8. I had never done a clean install on my dm3, and had a few issues on win7, which seemed to get worse when updating. But after a clean install the laptop runs win8 well
with just the small issues above...
