Mine has arrived, and it looks great! It's a little heavier than it looks like it should be, but that's because it looks so very sleek!

I haven't spent too much time with it yet but the trackpad seems to work just fine. Use a light touch with it though, especially if you're used to less sensitive pads.

However, if this below is true, I may want to send it back and reorder!
I missed the original 25% BCB by just a few days and it is a bummer. I still see 10% on the bing.com/cashback site though.

    I only see 10% BCB, not 25%.

For all of you whose laptops arrived today, when did you order them? I'm guessing... May 28th or 29th?

Not that I can tell so far. Build looks fine, the screen is crisp. No trace of pink anywhere. It's a very attractive laptop, actually. I may have to also grudgingly give Win7 some credit for being notVista. Time will tell.

Also, I played around a little bit with the fingerprint scanning and it's great! Seems really unfair that the reviews hardly mention it, since it's phenom for security purposes, and very few other computers offer it (take that, MBP!). I'm able to log onto my PC by just swiping my index finger over the reader, and it can manage my log-in data for various websites too. I may never want a scanner-less lappy again.

I ordered mine on May 25th, and the build date was set for June 4th. I got a shipment notice probably around June 2nd or 3rd though.

BCB update: I still see 10% if I search for the HP Direct store on Bing. However,, I was looking for a deal on anti-virus software when I clicked on a Norton entry, and to my surprise, HP was listed as a seller offering 25% BCB. So either Bing is being buggy, or maybe there are just a handful of products with the 25% on HP Direct. As far as Norton goes though, it's so marked up on HP that you can get it cheaper elsewhere (even with a smaller BCB).

Oh man... I think that's the first case of a dm4 arriving after the estimated ship date? I guess it makes logical sense, but it doesn't follow in the "early shipping" pattern. Oh well, I'm still hoping for mine to arrive before June 11!

I love it. The trackpad works flawlessly for me and I have had no problems with any of the two finger features. The CNET review mentioned having to be perfectly lined up to do the scroll function, however I can swipe my two fingers anywhere on the pad and the page scrolls flawlessly. For me the only thing I will need to adjust to is the keyboard since I am not used to the chicklet style. Also, for anyone who was interested my 6-cell high capacity battery lasted 5 hours and 10 minutes before reaching 10%. I had the screen a couple clicks dimmer than normal and was running multiple windows/updates.

Thanks! I was hoping the 6-cell high capacity would run at least 6 hours but I guess I shouldn't expect that from a i5 processor with a good graphics card. But since there is an interchangeable graphics system (dedicated/integrated), are you referring to the battery save mode with integrated turned on when you're getting 5:10 hours?

    Question regarding the Bing cashback

the 25% cashback is based on which amount (since I have never used it before). For example, for a config with final price of 950 after the instant rebate 150 off, will the cashback be 25% of 950 or 1100? Does the cashback take into account of tax too?

I am trying to see how much difference is there from the $200 coupon.

    Thanks,

Seems like I'm the only one who's reported that so far. To be fair, it did ship before it was even supposed to be built! I'm also happy to wait the extra couple of days if it reduces the amount of build problems seen in these laptops. Not a problem with this one still. Would have been sad if I'd had to send it back.

Good question. Your cashback will be before tax and after the discount. So, 25% of 950. It's a great deal!

Integrated was on and I was using the balanced power scheme. Under the power save mode you could get significantly more out of the battery. I'm extremely pleased so far.

I was at Costco today and happened to see the dm4 there, completely by chance... it is amazing! The screen is a little smaller than I expected, but it feels very solid and the metal casing feels good. I'm going to cast my vote for "definitely not pink".

I really hope mine ships today or tomorrow!

I am enjoying my dm4 immensely. I have used the trackpad a lot, it is different but works well. I'm old and I got used to it, you young folks should have no problem. I honestly have not tested the battery time though the smaller of the two I bought lasted about 3 hours before it was 25%. I am using the larger of the two the 9-cell for most use on portable. The ATI graphics card is very good but then so is the integrated graphics when on battery. I don't do gaming so I can't say how that would be. I really like the fingerprint reader it is one reason I chose this laptop. The 500 Gb 7200 HD was another. It does get warm but nothing warmer than the many laptops I have touched through the years. If you are on the fence, check out the 25% Bing thing and upgrade what you won't every upgrade yourself and pick it up. Unsolicited sales pitch there, I have no connection at all with HP. I'm glad no one is making a big deal about the color anymore. It is a very good looking device. We all don't have to be black or white. There are many colors on the palette. It looks like a nice tan on soft skin. (Actually, it looks like what ever you feel it looks like.)
I must add that the screen could have better contrast it is a little washed out. but there may be a setting adjustment for that.
The first computer I actually bought for myself was a no name brand by mail order for $1000.00 it had a 56K modem, 128K RAM and an awsomely big hard drive if I remember 2Gb or maybe 6 GB, I forget. At that same time my daughter had an Apple Performa built during the non Steve Jobs time, it was a piece of junk.
The first person I ever knew who had a computer in their home was a friend who bought an IBM to do her families taxes. It cost $7,000.00, the printer was the size as a washing machine (a lot of that was sound proofing.) It was before windows and used MSDOS. A little off topic, but just a little perspective to today's machines.

The stuff available now will be just as nostalgic some day, bet on it.

I picked HP DM4T at costco today.

I had ran few power and heat consumption tests. Here are my observations.

    Intel HD Graphics Mode
    IDLE: 14 Watts [TEMP = CPU:34/35 HDD:37]
    Load (Prime 95): 50 Watts [TEMP = CPU:69/70 HDD:37]
    Load (Prime 95+Furmark): 51 Watts [TEMP = CPU:81/81 HDD: 37]

    ATI 5450 Mode
    IDLE: 15 Watts [TEMP = CPU:38/37 ATI:48 HDD:38]
    LOAD (Prime 95): 53 Watts [TEMP = CPU:78/77 ATI:69.5 HDD:38]
    LOAD (Prime 95+Furmark): 66 Watts [TEMP = CPU:90/89 ATI:92 HDD:38]

Note: Battery is removed when running the tests (to get accurate power consumption). Screen Brightness was set to 100%

ATI's power usage in idle and cpu stress are impressive. Only 1-3 Watt difference to Intel HD Graphics. Only when stressed with furmark there is a 12 watts jump in power consumption over Intel HD which is not bad.

I did not like the display on HP DM4T it is lacking depth and contrast, otherwise it is very good Laptop.

    Hope this helps...

Hey guys I have a question. I ordered the dm4 already with the i5 420M and 4GB of ram. I should have gotten the i5 540M and 3GB of ram instead. Processing power is power is more important to me because I can upgrade the ram later and it's only $25 more.

My problem is I ordered it last week. It still says it's in progress. I'm going to try to call them tomorrow morning. Do you think they can still adjust it for me? Thanks in advance.

$25 for an upgrade to 4GB? Where are you able to buy a 2GB ram stick at that price for? I am very interested, as I went with 3GB. The cheapest I have seen a ddr3 2GB stick is $45. Please share if you have more information regarding this price.

No, I think he means that it's only $25 more to upgrade from an i5-430m to an i5-520m (with 3GB RAM) than to upgrade from 3GB RAM to 4GB RAM (with an i5-430m). The calculation still doesn't work out, but I think that's what he meant.

I am also considering modifying my set configuration. I ordered it yesterday.
I want to take advantage of the additional 3% Bing crumbs a person suggested in one of the earlier posts.
I need help with re-modification though. I set my order to the most basic configuration. All I want from my laptop is speed and being able to run a lot of programs at the background. I have no idea about the difference of each, but should I go for more RAM or a higher processor? All the others I am keeping at the most basic configuration. Here is what I have so far:

    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-430M Dual Core processor (2.26GHz, 3MB L2 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.53GHz
    • 3GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • Intel(R) HD Graphics
    • 14.0" diagonal High-Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366 x 768) -For HP Mobile Broadband WWAN
    • SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    • HP TrueVision Webcam + Fingerprint Reader + Digital Microphone
    • Wireless-N Card
    • Full-size island-style keyboard
    • 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard)
    • Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

    Thanks is advance.

Exactly. Once all the coupons and tax was applied my setup with the i5-430m and 4gb was $825 and the one wit hthe i5-520m and 3gb was $850. If that doesn't add up maybe I sacrificed something else in there to get that price I can't remember.

Okay, I just encountered my first problem with the DM4T --

I've noticed that everytime it makes any sound, it emits a short high-pitched click first. This occurs before all notification sounds (like when I plug in my iPhone, start playing an MP3, or receive an instant message).

    Any ideas?

Hmmm, mine does it as well. I'm not sure as to why though. It's not a big deal to me though. At least you know you're not the only one who gets it. My receiver at home does this same thing. I think it's the audio kicking in, as maybe it isn't rendering all of the time in order to save voltage and battery? I believe it's just the audio controller kicking in though.

Has anybody successfully OC'd the HD5450 in the DM4T? Are there any 3DMark06 scores for the DM4T? This GPU is likely to find its way to the TM2T tablet. I would be interested in your impressions of the GPU and the type of tasks it can accomplish. I am particularly interested in the ability to handle 1080p out to an external monitor.

3.5" wide x 2.25" deep. There are sensitivity settings on the laptop that are easy to change. I don't experience any cursor jumping anymore, and I was able to increase the sensitivity on the trackpad so that I no longer experience any problems scrolling or using the multi-touch.

I just called HP and complained about the corner of my laptop being about 1mm higher in the corner. It is a small crease, and I have decided to keep the laptop, but by calling and complaining they gave me $80 back on my credit card. It will not be applied as a coupon code, so my 25% BCB will still come in just fine. This will make my dm4 only $625.09 after tax and cash back. Try finding a better deal, I dare you!

The way I got was not only with complaining about the build quality, but I also let them know that I know about the coupon code that became active as of June 2 for $200 off. They told me that they could not apply the coupon code, which is what I was counting on, so they ended up offering to credit me back the $80. I asked to confirm that it would not hurt my BCB eligibility with a supervisor, and I recorded the conversation (thanks to skype :) ) just in case it doesn't go through. Maybe some of you can get this discount as well. It only took a 10 minute phone conversation.

    Cheers!

I have tried ATItool and I can't get it to work. I downloaded the latest catalyst driver, but atitool is not able to recognize it. I'm not sure why, but for now I am unable to OC my 5450. Tried rivatuner as well, and it couldn't locate the driver. I will tweak it some more and see if I can come up with any solutions. If anyone gets it to work, please post here.

Ordered 6/3rd sight unseen (still slated for 6/14), decided to check out local Costco this afternoon; lo and behold they had a unit sitting next to a new gen DV6 (and only another handful of models from Sony, Dell and HP), surprising since haven't seen the new HP notebooks at local MicroCenter (who usually has everything), BestBuy, etc. Agree with general assessment that it is a very nice looking machine, if a tad larger/heavier than I had imagined; superficial impressions: touchpad seemed very responsive; very decent webcam image, sound from speakers not particularly loud (compared with my prior generation HP DV1000 which is 4 years old; but similar output to a 1 year old DV7), nice display (but seemed slightly washed out..as a couple have commented). Looking forward to its arrival.

Thanks a lot for letting me know about the dimensions.
But how did you get your laptop to be so cheap. Even with the $200 coupon I can't have it any lower than $811 after tax.

I did not use a $200 off coupon, as I used bing cash back at 25%. My final build price was $889.99 after the instant $150 back, which gave me $222.50 back in cash back. My tax was around 4%, thank you Missouri, so that added around $38.06 or something like that. The cash back didn't require me to get the build up to $1100. I would not have bought the dm4 for that price, as it was out of my budget range. I didn't want to go over $700.

i really want to use the bing 25% plus 3% deal...i only the 200.00 off coupon for my order..when it comes should i return it

and in the mean time buy another laptop using the "bing" method to save almost a 100.00?? anyone think its worth the extra steps

maybe i can just make a complaint and have them credit me? lol

I thought about reordering since I used the $200 off coupon instead of the now present 25% bing cashback

However after some calculation, with a final config of 1100 - $150 instant rebate = 950 price:
with the coupon my final sale price was 750 + tax = 810ish
after some inquiry to other posters regarding how bing cashback works since I never used it before, it appears the final sale price would be 950 + tax - 25% of 950 = 788ish (since the tax is pre-cashback and the 25% is pre-tax)

In the end I feel my time and energy is more valuable than the difference of 810-788 = $22. This way I don't have to return it when it comes, and in addition the discount is immediate instead of cashback. But that's just how I feel, if I end up receiving the machine of good quality. You might feel differently with your money and also depends on your configuration.

I thought the EXACT same thing and share your opinion. Could take another 2-3 weeks to finally enjoy the laptop after that long and you won't receive the money for a long time. Just be happy and enjoy the laptop when it comes. I know I will. I hope it comes this week. But I ordered it on the 5th so might not be till next week. :(

How heavy is this laptop with the 9cell
from what i've read the 6 cell only allows 4 hours.
I'm looking for something with at least 6-7 hours.
I cancelled my ul30vt for a 14" with good build quality + screen. (the ul80 sounds awful in both)

You may have to send it back as soon as you get it and order another one.

With so many returns, do they just refurbish and sell it back?

I might just keep it. They said I have 21 days to send it back. I mean how much faster is the 520m processor over the 430m? If I could go back I woulda done the 520 and less ram to balance the price out but I feel like the 430 be great.
