I just got mine today. I am so disappointed. I have to send it back. The keyboard cover juts up in the center, and one of the panels on the bottom is poking out too much. It is pretty though.

Yes, mine is rough as well.

I got around 6:35 last night on the lowest brightness setting before it entered forced hibernation.

So I have been having a bit of a problem. I'd appreciate anybody's input.
I've got the dm4 with the ATI 512mb graphics option. The problem that I am having is that when I allow the computer to go to standby while plugged in, bringing it out of standby is a bit more of a challenge...

basically the screen flickers once then goes all black. I can tell everything else is working because the fingerprint reader logs me in. The only temporary fix I came up with is to re-enter standby mode.

I've re-flashed the bios, and uninstalled the graphics controllers and still the same problem. please advise.

Also, the sound on this thing is unbearably low, is anybody else having the same issue?????

As far as the sound goes. It is pretty quiet even on full blast. At one point I was having the issue of it beeping everytime I sound would play and it was pretty annoying. The volume seems decent now and the beeping is gone. I wonder if it's a software thing that can be fixed with future driver updates.

BTW everyone, there's a new synaptics driver from 6/21/2010. I installed it and I don't know if it made much difference, but I've never felt the touchpad was as bad as people say.

Question, my laptop is extremely slow when on power save mode. I know it SHOULD be but loading images on the web browser is dreadful. I plug it in and it's like SUPER turbo mode in comparison lol. Is it because I didn't install the integrated Intel HD graphics driver? From a fresh wipe I only installed the ATI graphics driver. With a dual gpu setup is it important to install both? I wonder if that's why my laptops been freezing under heavy graphic loads at times....hmmm....any input?

Man.. it's tough to look through all of these problems and still want this laptop. It's the best specs for the size and price... I wonder how many people DON'T have some sort of problems.

Is the "AMD VGA Driver" different from the "AMD Video/Graphics Driver for Microsoft Windows 7" on the DM4T drivers? This whole time I've had the "AMD Video/Graphics Driver for Microsoft Windows 7" installed and am wondering if the VGA driver is actually the newer driver for the graphics card so I'm downloading that now.

I'm having issues where sometimes when I watch a streaming HD video (in this case on Vimeo), it freezes and has a buzzing sound. Then I have to force reboot the laptop. Hopefully this "VGA" driver works. I'm hoping it's not a driver that's just for the VGA connection. The Catalyst driver that our card falls under on the ATI site is much newer (updated last week) but can't be installed since it doesn't support the dual graphics cards yet. :(

Alright I'm really getting upset with this. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the video card along with Flash Player due to it always freezing during a streaming video.

PROFILE: Black Thought & Questlove (The Roots) on Vimeo

That's the same video. I watched it four times in a row and it can never even get to the halfway point without freezing on me. If anyone has the time, can they try it on theirs too? (Sorry if it's not an interesting video lol) I don't know what to do but as a last resort I'm going to do ANOTHER wipe (already did one) and reinstall Windows 7.

The bottom of the laptop feels warm during the video but not burning my hand warm or anything. The weather here is pretty warm too. But it shouldn't freeze! What do you guys think I should do? I received it last week. I don't want to go through the hassle of returning it and ordering another one because I need my laptop. If I ultimately have to I will though. Do they completely cover everything if I have to? Shipping and all?

Okay, that video sucks. I can't even get it to load, haha. Try watching this (it's the Dark Knight trailer on Youtube in 1080p). If you can't watch it in full 1080p, then you know you have a problem. I wouldn't worry about the Vimeo video.

Wait where's the link? lol. I want to make sure I'm watching the same one you're talking about for comparison.

Yeah but a video shouldn't make my laptop FREEZE like that. Even my browser erroring out would be better than this. The screen goes black and I just hear this loud buzzing sound. :(

ok it seems to happen very frequently with any video i stream online. I don't know what's causing it but I've never had this problem before with any of my computers. I'm hoping it's not a hardware issue. I'm backing up all my stuff now then I'll reformat and report my findings.

Received my wife's dm4t yesterday. Same specs with 5450 512mb

The touch-pad blows. The software seriously needs an option of not being able to move the mouse curse on both the left and right buttons. I don't use touch-pads much. But after having two fingers on the pad (both left and right hand index fingers) (right index finger to move the cursor and left index finger to press the button) causes the mouse pointer to go hey-wire. Why should I adapt to a new touch pad when a simple software fix to disable tracking on the mouse buttons will resolve the problem?

The CPU area runs extremely hot (bottom left if the laptop is sitting on your lap). This is just normal basic web surfing and not putting any load on the CPU. My left leg was very warm after using the laptop for 5 minutes.

Fan noise is pretty loud over the CPU area and doesn't seem to be doing a good job at cooling.

I recommend upgrading the hard drive to an intel ssd over the 7200 conventional hard drive for windows 7.

1366x768 is pretty much standard on a 14". Would prefer if they could up the resolution to 1680x1050.

Later tonight I will take off the bottom panel and see if I can apply some thermal paste to the CPU to help lower the temps and control the fan noise. If anyone has any other suggestions let me know.

Also - The laptop does have a pink tint to it.

    hey guys,

I am thinking of buying the HP dm4t laptop. I would like to get your feedback about 4 things:

    1) Does this laptop heat up too much?
    2) How quite is it? Does the fan make a lot of noise?
    3) How is the screen? I like to watch movies on my laptop. Is the screen good enough for this?
    4) I have read in other reviews that the pink color stands out. Is it so bad?
    5) This is my first HP laptop purchase. How reliable are hp laptops?

Overall how good is this purchase?

    Appreciate your feedback.
    Thanks,
    Sanjay

    yes.

    yes.

Screen is good but you will crave more res. Also the view angles are kind of weird and look best when you tilt the screen all the way back.
    4) I have read in other reviews that the pink color stands out. Is it so bad?
    Not bad.
    5) This is my first HP laptop purchase. How reliable are hp laptops?
Not sure. only had it a day.

Overall how good is this purchase?
For comparing other 14" seems to be the best deal on the market for around $800 shipped w/ tax and dedicated graphics for an i5 processor.

It seems like it is for a lot of users but my max internal temps were in the low 80c (C) and the outside was very cool except for by the vent, which wasn't too hot to touch just warm.

The fan is constantly spinning at a low, barely audible level when doing normal tasks but when you are doing something intensive it gets audible but I couldn't hear it over my TV on average volume

The picture itself is very good, crisp and clear with no washed out colors.

Not really. It is only noticeable in the right light. Normal is looks silver/argento/champagne

A lot of people will tell you that they are not reliable but I have owned three HP laptops and not had a problem with any of them.

Has anyone installed the latest Synaptics drivers from the HP website? It won't let me enable two-finger scrolling, for some reason. The check box is visible, but when I click on it, nothing happens. I am going to revert to the older drivers until someone figures out what's wrong.

I checked this notebook out at Best Buy and Costco yesterday. The performance seemed fine, but the aesthetics left something to be desired. Like others have said, there is a clear pink/champagne tint to it.

Can someone PLEASE test this video and tell me if it goes past the 6 minute point without freezing?

okayplayer - Hip Hop Music, Reviews, News, Interviews, Blogs and Discussion Board - PROFILE: Black Thought & ?uestlove

I would really appreciate it. I don't understand why my laptop keeps freezing with certain videos when my netbook can run them just fine. I'm on the phone with HP tech support and they're not admitting to any issue with the software/hardware of the laptop. I have an HP DM4T with the added 512MB ATI card.

That video I posted ALWAYS freezes on me. I want to make sure I'm not the only one.

Thank you! Are you on the integrated Intel graphics or the dual with ATI dedicated too?

I just disabled my ATI graphics card and the integrated Intel runs it fine. So now I know the problem. Hopefully I just need to reinstall the drivers and it's not a physical issue with the card.

I think I remember there being like 4 or 5 drivers for network cards ALONE on HP's website. I'm sure since they offer different kinds when you customize the dm4 they offer one for each.

Hi I recently purchased my very own HP dm4t. For my new computer with all the HP extra programs and whatnots, I wanted to do a clean install of my OS to Windows 7 Ultimate from Windows 7 Home Premium. After backing up the Recovery drive (D) and my personal files, I went ahead with the install. Everything went perfectly, but when I began setting up everything back in order, I realized that the Validity Fingerprint Reader wasn't working anymore. First, I went to Device Manager and updated everything to current version and under Biometric Device, I found Validity Sensor so I thought it was fixed after all. But I'm guessing the software wasn't installed or set up. So here I am, with a 6-days old dm4t, stuck doing reinstalls of everything all over again. Anyone who can help me please shed some light on this matter.
    Thanks in advance.

If I'm not mistaken, there is a driver for the fingerprint reader on HP's website along with the software needed to use it.

Yes, the drivers on HP's website work for the fingerprint reader. I'm running on my fresh install right now.

If anyone could answer this it would be appreciated. After the clean install and installing all the drivers that would install from HP's website, when I adjust the sound, the volume level no longer shows up at the top of the screen. This is just a small thing, but any idea why this would happen?

    Hi G,

To recover your OSD for that, load up the HP quick touch SW, and / or quick launch...

All of a sudden the visual output from my sound control buttons (f9/10) is gone. The sound changes fine but I don't see it changing. I did disabled some services from msconfig but bringing them back does not seem to solve the issue. Anyone in the same boat? Also, is the sound output is really low? I think in a noisy environment you can here the speakers even at full blast.

Oops- looks like someone just posted the solution.
