I don't recommend a clean install unless you are experiencing performance issues and you have some experience.

Can anybody confirm if the dm4t can output 5.1 audio via HDMI using the integrated graphics card? Thanks.

I got mine on Thursday. Wiped and reinstalled Win 7. The only driver it initially needed was the wifi card. Eventually I installed the latest ATI drivers, fingerprint reader, audio, and keyboard shortcut keys. Very simple process. Even hooked up my new Asus LCD to it and it looks great. 1080P output.

I love everything about the laptop so far. Screen looks nice (though I wish it was matte over glossy). The build quality is great with the metal/magnesium. The color is definitely silver but has a pinkish hue depending on the lighting. It's not really feminine though. Keys feel great and trackpad isn't nearly as bad as all the reviews and people are saying. I'l agree if they disable the touch motion on the bottom where the buttons are it'd be nicer. I love the size of it though. The shortcut keys are very nice at the top (volume, seek, brightness, etc.) with the one touch instead of having to hold an Fn key.

It's quick and I haven't had any issues yet. I still need to try some gaming on it but streaming and everything I've thrown at it so far it has done very well. Definitely happy. :)

like i said I was playing counter strike source and was seeing 80 degrees celsius, Heroes of Newerth was around 95 degrees celsius and it's scorching hot on the left side of my laptop. Idling or just firefox browsing was at 60 degrees celsius. That is not normal temperatures.

Actually I have no agenda in posting that article other than to express appreciation for those people who work the lines. As orders are made by us, the concern is all about shipping, but the manufacture is really amazing. In the old days design and implementation took years. Today, a line in this gigantic factory can probably be re-staged within a month or two when a new model is brought out. I still feel quality control is the prime item, that is if their designers have done their job.

My DM4 is always warm on the left side, its right where my wrist rests as I type. I'm not sure what is under there, anyone know? No games here, but it is on and working all day, on weekends especially.
Seems to handle anything I present to it so far. A great device all told.

Those temps you mention seem normal for a laptop this size. It's probably hot on the left side because that's where either the cpu or gpu is located.

Those are about 10-15C higher than mine all around. I idle at around 50C and it maxes out at 82C. Maybe there is something wrong.

Most things on this laptop have been great so far. I was finally able to burn the recovery discs, but not before wasting four DVDs due to random errors here and there. Also, one thing that really bothers me is that the audio card has major input latency -- meaning that I can no longer monitor my guitar by plugging it into the microphone jack. Does anyone have any fixes for this? I already tried looking for newer drivers.

So far the only issue I have is...none. Really. The touchpad is a bit sensitive but if you finesse it a bit you get used to it over time...plus, I bought a pink wireless mouse and I am not happy because everyone keeps talking about how pink the case is and now it doesn't match my mouse...I'm not joking. The case is NOT pink. I would prefer a matte screen but knew in advance this is not what I was ordering and knew I could live with it.

OK, I said I would talk about the PLS14 Case Logic Sleeve I bought...the dimensions of the sleeve said it would be tight to the dm4t and guess what?...it's loose. No joke, the case is loose which means it has enough extra space to accomodate my 9 cell battery and who knows what else. It's a nice sleeve so go buy it if you need a sleeve as the suede interior is going to pay for itself by preventing scratches.

BTW, my lappy's name is Viognier...what's yours? :)

Just got mine. The touchpad is indeed INFURIATING. I generally rest my thumb on the left click button when using a touchpad. This causes the cursor to go haywire. Is there ANY way to disable the bottom part of the touchpad? Has anyone come up with some way of solving this?

Ah, that explains why some people hate the touchpad. I only use one finger and the rest of my hand is elevated off of the laptop so that is why I don't have problems, I guess.

So I am worried that my laptop is defective as well, it gets quite warm from nonuse overnight to start up and use for web browsing for 5 min. The temp GPU: 54C, CPU ~50C. When I do some light gaming, GPU gets up to high 70s in about 20 min and CPU goes up to about 58/60C. Is this a real concern or is everything ok

It all depends on what settings you use for gaming. Plus which card are you using. I haven't seen any reviews on these mobility 5450 cards so I don't really know what the average temps for idle and gaming are going to be. Also what program are you using to check these temps?

It is worth noting that the both versions of the GPU upgrade have seen price drops. Down $25 for 512, $50 for 1GB. So anyone that purchased one should probably phone in and get the difference credited to your purchase card.

Can you guys hear the fan on the left side of the laptop?
I have been using the laptop exclusively on battery the first few days. I just ran started using the laptop with it plugged into external power supply and now the fan sound is quite significant and it will rev up when I do things such as browsing the web. I would like to know if this is an abnormality.

I felt that I had more fan noise off the battery, but it does rev up for like 2 seconds on the power cord randomly. Does your left side get warm/hot?

As long as both the CPU and GPU stay under 85C I wouldn't worry. This is a relatively large amount of power in a small chassis, those temps aren't a problem.

As for the fan coming on; the default setting in Windows power options is active cooling when on AC power so the fan will turn on before the processor slows down. Go the Power Options, Edit Plan Settings, Advanced Power Settings, and Processor Power Management. Then change the System Cooling to passive.

Agreed, 85C when gaming is still pretty good. I would think any type of gaming would ramp up the temps on this due to its size.

My G73 hits 85C when gaming and that thing has way better cooling than this does.

How long is everyone's batteries lasting, on average? I can't really give an accurate answer, since I was doing some power-intensive activities while on battery power (data transfer, program installing, etc), but I seem to be getting barely 3-4 hours. I got the high capacity 6-cell battery. I will update you all once I've tested the battery during normal use.

Actually, can someone with the standard capacity 6-cell battery take a look at the battery and tell me what model it is? Mine says MU06 (in a rectangular box next to the HP logo). I want to make sure HP didn't rip me off and give me a standard battery.

Is there a way to restore the system completely? like to have like it was just shipped? Seems system recovery only has my initial usage as the first restore point but I do not find any "raw" recovery option that sort of reinstalls win7 automatically?

If you kept the recovery partition there should be a Restore to Factory Defaults option in the Recovery Manager program.

If you burned the recovery discs using the HP Recovery Media Creation tool, you could use those 5 DVDs to restore the system back to factory settings. If you haven't burned them yet, I'm sure you still can. Just beware that you can only burn the set of DVDs once.

Now it's even hitting 90 GPU, 75 CPU after 30 min, would just using integrated lower the temps?

Also is this due to a build issue? or is it just DM4 design in general? My idles are 53 GPU, 48 CPU

Your GPU is a little warm but as long as you are no having problems with it (artifacts during games, slow downs, etc) you are okay.

I'm sad to say that I just sent back my dm4t earlier today. There was nothing wrong with it, and it is a great laptop, I just liked the extra features of the dv6z more.

Eventually got my wife's dm4t from HP. I was checking with wprime/hwmonitor and temp hit 86C. In northeast ambient temp today is about 31-32C. I think 86C at full load is way too much to be comfortable and I am kind of scared that this laptop can not stand the beating if I take to hotter parts of asia. Can other's confirm their temps at full load with Wmonitor?
My system- i5 430M, intel GPU, 320GB hdd, 4GB RAM, win7 64. System idles at little over 40C.

Has anyone experienced any freezing on high loads? I have mine connected to a 1080P Asus LED LCD and I was playing music with MediaMonkey on one screen and a youtube video on the main screen of the laptop. When I went to pause the youtube video the screens went black and the music just got stuck on the note and the volume was loud at the time. I was forced to hold the power button and restart it. It has frozen a few times since I've had it. Shouldn't an i5 processor with a fairly good graphics card be able to handle a small load like that? It didn't seem to be that cpu intensive.

I already wiped the computer and installed Windows 7 a few days ago. All drivers are up to date as well. Any solutions or precautions so this doesn't happen in the future? My Samsung netbook and HP Touchsmart PC VERY rarely restarted the last year I had them. I was hoping I'd have a pretty reliable laptop on my hands.....

    hi guys,

first thanks for the valueable information you provide about pavilion dm4t.

i just bought one for my wife a few days ago. it comes with win7 home edition 64. i reimaged it to win7 ultimate 64. everything works fine except: whenever i plug or unplug the AC adapter, the screen will turn brighter (or dim more) first (which is normal and expected). however, it will black out for a few seconds, leaving an arrow blinking on center of the black, and then come back to the normal state before the blackout. I didn't see this behavior before the reimage and i assume there is something i did wrong or missing from my reimage. my machine is customized with Intel HD Graph card and I did install the Intel HD driver after reimage and "device manager" shows it works well.

If you've experience with such a problem, please share with me.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Some mbp owners complain about that as well.. I've never really heard of any solutions, other than changing your typing habits.
One mbp owner went as far as grinding the edge down, but I don't think you want that.

Personally, I don't feel any pain from the front edge. Maybe it's because I position my hands differently? I don't know. In any case, you could try applying a thin strip of tape (probably a rubbery type, like electrical tape) to the top portion of the edge, so you don't cover the speakers or SD cart slot.
