ludayoda: I think the original instructions are incorrect..there's no reason to burn a 15GB OS/system partition. I have one big ~95GB partition and it functions just fine.

aznron: You don't uninstall Windows, you format the HD by booting the CD you created with nLite, and following the steps from there. (delete the current partition Windows is on, then create it again, & format as NTFS format)

I'm thinking of reformatting/reinstalling and taking notes, so I can post up a reinstallation guide specific to the dv8000t, because clearly it's different than the instructions for the dv2000t.

MDesigner, would those instructions fit the dv5000t as well? My other question was whether I could use the serial number for xp pro( that came with my laptop) when I am using my own xp pro disc for clean installation? I already have an xp pro that i used for my desktop. I do not want to buy another cd just so I can use it for my notebook, since I already paid for the xp pro upgrade.

I don't know for sure, luda.. the crucial step the 1st post in this thread left out is the SATA drivers. I quote:

Obviously that's a bit vague. It turns out the needed SATA drivers are in C:\SwSetup\HDD, and it's probably best to slipstream ALL of the drivers to CD. Whether this will stop the blue screen I got last time I installed Windows, I'm not entirely sure. This is why I'd like to reformat and reinstall, knowing what I know now, and see how smoothly it goes. I'll think about it this weekend.. I'm going out of town, & I might bring all my installation CDs with me and try a clean install with hopefully no issues, and if it goes smoothly and everything is perfect, I will definitely post instructions on this forum and try to have a mod make the post sticky.

I agree, agree. The guide was a good start, for those that have done that before. It's not totally complete (step-by-step) for someone doing it for the first time. I think a couple things were assumed.

OK, I'm convinced. :) I'll back up a few things and reformat, and take extensive notes. I'll post here once I post up the dv8000t reinstallation guide. Expect it within a week or so (roughly)

THANK you for that link.. it includes a link to QuickPlay 2.0.. the REAL thing you would actually need to reinstall it on your machine. C:\SwSetup contains nothing of the sort.

The are two versions of QP2: One for operation without windows, and the other for use within windows. The one in the SwSetup folder is the one for use within Windows.

This is after a no BSOD install:
    - installed intel matrix storage drivers succesfully
    - used nlite rc8 with SATA driver integration

stupid decision: I reformated it again (woohooo)

This is what I got after getting a BSOD, disabling SATA, installing drivers manually for the 2 IDE channels and then re enabling SATA:
    - I can't install intel matrix storage software because it says that I don't meet the minimum requirements.
    - the Second IDE Channel is just an Ordinairy Second IDE Channel Waaa!!
    - used nlite 1.0 final with exact same SATA driver integration as before.

Now I'm afraid that that my HD's performance would suffer a noticable decline since I'm not able to install the intel matrix drivers/software. :(

I am going to be receiving my dv2000z in a day or so and posted a thread asking about installing Windows MCE on it and didn't get any replies. I don't know if iposing the same question in this thread is in bad taste, but I was hoping maybe someone in here could tell me if it's a bad idea to attempt to install MCE on it? I figure since I have to reformat to get rid of the bloatware anyway, I could just swap out the OS then... But I don't know enough about MCE to know if I'll run into driver conflicts that I wouldn't otherwise just reinstalling XP.

    Anyone know?

Slipstreaming SATA drivers, as given in the original post, works fine till I try to reboot. I just cannot reboot after the install unless I disable SATA through BIOS. I will try to redo the slipstreaming and post here if it works. Other than that if you have a copy of C:\SwSetup folder on a disc you will be just fine.

i just reformatted using nlite, but once reformatting and installing windows was done it just kept rebooting over and over by itself. It gets to the windows logo screen but right after that reboots. Safe mode doesnt work.....any ideas?

Do not use the nLite slipstream method, it's prone to problems. The blue screens you are getting are the error INVALID_BOOT_DEVICE, because you have SATA enabled but your OS has no SATA drivers installed.

Check the dv8000t installation thread and see if those steps work for you (they may not):

Followed the steps listed for dv8000 install w/o slipstreaming the drivers. It worked liked a charm and native SATA is enabled too :). So in a nutshell steps listed for dv8000t install work for dv2000t too.

Can a admin modify the original post OR at least redirect it to dv800t link.

Got my dv2000z today and the reinstall instructions worked perfectly (decided to just reinstall XP after getting no replies about MCE). Thanks to TPH for putting them up.

Also, TPH, I don't know if you still need that wallpaper, but I can upload it somewhere if you do. If you still have that DVD of SwSetup, they should be in there though (the wallpapers are in the Brandit / Bitmap folder).

Can I use the XP Pro CD I got with the laptop to do this? or does it have to be a retail version?
    Thanks for your help.

p.s. I wasn't going to do this because it seems a little complicated because of the drivers but after getting my laptop yesterday and seeing all the crap HP has put in it, I'm definetely reinstalling XP. Hopefully I can use the XP Pro CD it came with it otherwise I paid an extra $75 for the upgrade from Home to Pro for nothing.

OK. Just got DV2000T. A reinstallation is not neccessary for me but I do need more partition to get things organized. If you ask me to put everything under a big system drive C:, all stuff will hide themself from me quickly.

I have formated recovery partition and rescure that 10GB and I am using it as drive D: to store work/research related stuff. Now I need one more partition E: to store entertaining stuff.

I tried that using Partition Magic 8 but it won't work. The notebook need to restart to finish that job. When it restarts, it gives me ERROR 893 and it says too many of this errors so the job is quited and nothing can be done.

Any tricks or software that does the job? Thanks a lot.

BTW: I called HP and they don't recommend that so they refuse this type of support.

I haven't read through the whole topic, so please excuse me if it has been discussed before.

Nevertheless, my friend is in the market for a dv2000t. Just what are the advantages of going through this procedure? Getting rid of bloatware and opening more hd space? Will the computer be faster?

    Thanks.

Yes to both your questions. But it depends on a number of factors. If you have 2GB RAM, then in most cases the increase in performance will be insignificant. But if you have 512MB or less, then there will be some performance improvements. The main improvement will be in boot times since you will cut down on the number of startup programs. There wont be significant improvements in the overall speed of the laptop but the response times will generally be better after reformatting. Other than this you also recover the HDD space eaten away by the recovery partition and the unwanted programs. Just deleting the blotware wont completely get rid of it. Remanents will remain in the system registry and trying to clean that up without reformatting is a bigger pain than going through with a clean reinstallation and installin only the software that you need/use.

I would definately recommend a clean install. But if you are happy with the performance as is, then you could probably work with the stock installation.

If I keep the recovery partition, would I still be able to use it in case I wanted to revert back to factory settings (holding F11 when booting)? Or is it useless after you reinstall XP and you pretty much have to use the recovery discs?

Not recommended and most likely wont work since if you reinstall Windows it will rewrite the MBR and you wont be able to use that partition.

Alright, thanks miner. I've reformatted the HDD a few times (with and w/o the recovery partition). So now I'm trying a 15GB partition with the rest unpartitioned.

One thing I noticed during one of my reformats was that the microphone works, but is not able to pick up any sound unless my mouth is really close to the mic (almost touching it). Even then, I have to turn the volume way up to hear it play back. I went through the "test hardware" for the Voice/mic, but it still doesn't pickup noise very good. I'm wondering if I had installed the wrong driver for that. spress23, have you gotten your mic to work?

If anyone doesn't want to deal with re-installing, or doesn't have the XP OEM CD, but has the issue of XP startup taking forever:

I narrowed the offending application down to Norton Internet Security. Windows would start, but I would only have the background and the mouse pointer for 10 -15 seconds, which was frickin annoying. After uninstalling Norton Internet Security it went away.

I've uninstalled all the apps I don't want, and my DV2000 is working fine. Yeah I may have some extra registry settings and some extra DLLs lying around in the system directory, but they don't cause any problems.

    dv5000t -

I just got my dv5000t this week, and I've been playing with the recovery features a bit... I wanted to perform a clean OS install so I loaded the Win XP CD that came with my notebook...

    - note 1, HP says you can use windows xp to create the 1GB partition used by Quickplay.. they point to -- http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...docname=c00297718&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN -- HP Says that this document was written for QuickPlay v1.0 which only required 240MB of disk space.. but the process is the same "except" you must partition 1024MB (1GB).

    - note 2, I've performed several test recoveries... I even deleted the SWSETUP folder and then ran a recovery... yes, the swsetup folder was stored. [This was done without removing the recovery partition].
Would that happen if the recovery partition where removed?!? I'm told that as long as you burned the recovery set, then yes- but I've read documents that contradict what support says...

    - note 3, Full Recovery... using the HP Recovery DVDs.. "WILL" restore your restore partition - there's a plethra of menu options burried under the hood.. once you've booted from your recovery discs, the "<ctrl> + <backspace>" will reveal a whole new menu... everything from dumping the MBR and dropping all partitions on the installed disc. The process is "VERY" lengthy, say 2 + hours for a full factory recovery. See: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...=en&product=1832441&lang=en&docname=c00608578 for details on the forementioned recovery.

    ---
As far as the other nLite "is" one nice package... definately a tool to use, and through it you can actually build a more "personal" WinXP Installation...

    v3000T

I bought my V3000T with WinXP Home thinking on formatting and clean installing the XP Prof-SP2 (which I got from school for $20). I haven't found an installation guide for the V3000T but assume it'll be equally complicated to this one (for newbies like me). Is it possible just to upgrade to XP-Pro and get rid of the bloatware as much as possible without a clean installation? If so, what would be the best way to go about it?

    Thanks a bunch in advance!!

    BTW this is my lappy....

    Genuine Windows XP Home Edition
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2500 (2.0 GHz)
    - 14.1" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)

    Hi,

I've followed the exact same process described my MDesigner for DV8000T & all I can say is : "I'm Totally Royally Screwed Up by Microsoft" !!

Before, I utter an other word, let me tell you geeks out there abt my PC.. it prolly makes sense this way:

    HP DV2000T

    W/ Windows XP Home Edition

    100 GB HDD

    1GB RAM

    2.5 GHZ Dual core.....

    Here's what I've done:

    1. I bought a Windows XP PRO w/ SP2 CD

    2. Rebooted the system --> Disabled "SATA Native Support" in BIOS

    3. BOOTed from Windows XP CD & entered Windows SETUP

    (Found 2 drives --> 92046 MB -Primary Partition1 & 1028 MB - Primary Partition2)

    4. Deleted the 92046 MB partition

    5. Created 4 New partitions out the remaining 92.. GB
    --> Primary Partition1 --> 30GB
    Primary Partition3 --> 20GB
    Primary Partition4 --> 20GB
    Primary Partition5 --> 22GB

6.Selected the 30GB Primary -1 for installing windows:
--> Windows (FULL) FORMATTED the HDD

    SO FAR SOOOOO GOOD.

    7. SETUP Started loading windows:

    - Following messages:

"Setup could not find the p3.sys" in intallation cd.....make sure you have inserted the windows xp cd.."

Options: "ENTER" to Retry "ESC" to Skip & "F3" to Quit

Did try "ENTER" a couple of times.. didn't work.. so did HIT "ESC" to skip & go further...

So, I kept receiving messages like that for all the following files:

    P3.sys, ks.sys, modem.sys, parport.sys, wdmaud.drv, pjlmon.dll, ndisuio.sys, amdk6.sys, hid.dll, mssmbios.sys, nici394.sys, sonydcom.sys, sp2.cab, w2csapi.dll, msh263.drv, mtkrpamp.exe, mouclass.sys

    8. So..I kept hitting "ESC" & finally it said "100 %" & it rebooted..

    9. Now, we come into XP install --> slighty graphical environment

    --> "In preparing installation" stage
(it shows: set up will complete in 39 minutes)

10.After few minutes (it shows: set up will complete in 34 minutes)

Message: "Windows could not load the installer for CDROM. Contact your hardware vendor for information"

    HIT "ENTER"
Message: "Windows could not load the installer for DiskDrive. Contact your hardware vendor for information"
    HIT "ENTER"

    11. I left it like that ..for sometime - 40 minutes or so it still shows set up will complete in 34 minutes.. but the bottom right blinking green light keeps moving.. indicating the system is reading (Not struck)...

    12. Finally after a while (abt a hr later) it came up with the same messages as above..& got struckk...

So, guys.. please help..me .. Got struck here..

As, i've already formatted.. there's nothing in my system now.. desperate to get it back up & running!!

Please do not suggest me to use the HP recovery DVDs .. they suck big time -- it restores back to the OEM setting .. with all the bloatware..!!

So, please.. advices needed for a clean XP installation..!!

Check to make sure your optical drive is clean. I would get a clean disc and try to clean it. Make sure the xp cd disc is also clean. If you clean both items and it still happens you could have a bad cd but I doubt that. The other problem is that the optical drive is bad.

If you have another computer (desktop) try to install xp on it and see if you get to step 9 in your post (xp install --> sligthly graphical enviroment). If you get there without any errors then your optical drive is the culprit.

    Thanks Scott,

Yep, that was a problem with the CD.. I used a different one.. it went through smooth!!

All is fine.. except for this one thing: QuickPlay

When I try to install the HPQPDP..it says-

"Installation Terminated due to partition allocation failure. Please check your system and try again."

Also, now.. I also a drive (unformatted) ..saying "Logical partition (X :).. in my system..!!

    Didn't touch it though!!

It would be great if someone could help solve the Quick Play Problem!!

    Thanks

you need at least 1 GB of unpartitioned space in order to run HPQPDP. This program will create a 1 GB partition for quickplay to run...So you might have to delete/resize one of your existing partitions. HPQPDP will then create a partition with the drive letter, X:. Hope this helps.

I clean installed WinXP Pro SP2 following MDesigner guide for dv8000 ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=62357&highlight=step) until step 20 and the QP installation instructions on the starter of this one (tph #1). From there on I follow a bit of each guide until I got everything to work (I think): SATA enabled, Direct QP, sound/modem OK. My lappy is incredibly fast now!! (I still need to install my programs though, so we'll see). I couldn’t have done it with out you guys. Thanks a lot!!!

PS: The only thing I don't see any more in the task bar is the little antenna-like icon, but my wireless works and BT is installed. Does it mean I'm not using all the capabilities of the PRO/Wireless? BTW, I don't have any question signs in the device manager.

Does note #3 mean that it will reinstall both the recovery partition and the HP QuickPlay partition?

Yes, the recovery discs you burnt will put the computer back to factory state. So, it will recover the partitions and all of the bloatware installed on the laptop.

Thanks a lot, Miner. My problem is that I erased both my recovery partition and my QuickPlay partition on my DV2000T before creating the recovery CDs. I ordered recovery CDs from HP (only $15). I thought I would also have to order a QuickPlay Recovery CD (which, it seems, none of the HP sales people have ever heard of before, though I saw one on ebay). But if you are saying that the recovery CDs I ordered will restore all three partitions on the hard drive (operating system, recovery partition and QuickPlay partition), I will be all set.

If the recovery discs are the same as the ones they ask people to burn, then yes, it should contain Quickplay as well the recovery partition.

Is it possible to get rid of the bloatware by erasing windows, reinstalling it from the back up cd that is sold for $10 with the laptops (which only has the operating system), and then do a selective application recovery from the recovery CD?
