I saw the BIOS option and that it was enabled by default. That surprised me, but I left it enabled. I figured it was probably good for the laptop components and the noise is barely audible so it didn't bother me. That said, I'm surprised to hear that the fan never seems to turn off for you when you disable always-on. Does it turn on immediately at boot time or is there at least a brief period when it doesn't run? I guess the machine is just deciding that it is warm enough that it wants the fan on.

I find that the heat is fine. The palm rests warm up a bit but it is not hot or uncomfortable. I try to avoid placing any laptop right on my lap, but when I do with this machine it isn't too hot. The bottom is much cooler than an old Dell Latitude D810 that I had.

Saw a movie on it and there was very little heat and the fan is pretty quiet. BIG contrast from my Gateway

has anyone experienced problems with the wireless on the dv3500t? Mine's really flaky. Internet connection on it drops every few mins, while the connection on an old compaq I have alongside it is steady as a rock

Can someone look at the manufacturer and model for the display please - with a special program or in control panel? You can use EVEREST or PC Wizard to check your screen manufacture. Please comment on its quality too (colours, viewing angles, brightness). Thanks!

Thanks. So it's an AUOptronics screen. They're usually pretty good. How would it rate it colours, viewing angles and brightness wise?

Are there any owners who got different displays -I mean manufactured by LG, Samsung or CMO? Or all these special edition 3500t have this AUO screen?

After reading so many ''lottery'' threads about getting a bad Samsung/CMO or a good LG display on other laptops (Dells, Lenovos) I'm wondering if buying the 3500t I might encounter the same problem. I'm very anal about displays and after reading the good reviews saying the 3500t has a superb screen I don't wanna realize after buying one that it doesn't have the good display or smth like that. Please help me with info. :)

This is a great little lappy for the price - had everything I wanted - just a bit heavier than I would have liked, but can't have everything . . .

I too am curious about the warranty for this machine. My box included the flyer saying HP has upped the warranty to 2 years, which is great, but has anyone tested it out with HP? I'm presuming that just registering with HP will be enough to activate the warranty, but I'm still not completely confident.

    Thanks - Sally

Has anyone else had problems with the dv3510nr after hibernation or sleep? I've had two episodes where the fingerprint reader is not detected at the logon screen after hibernating. In both cases I logged on with the password and chose restart from the Start menu, at which point the computer hung on the "Shutting down" screen, and had to be turned off with the power button. In both cases the problem was gone upon starting again.

On other occasions after hibernating or sleeping the computer has failed to reconnect to the WiFi network. One time, the network appeared in the list of available networks, but eventually disappeared after attempts to connect. Another time it finally connected after several tries.

If you haven't tried letting your dv3510nr go into hibernate mode, you might want to give it a try and see what happens. I'd like to know too, because I'm wondering if this is a widespread issue. Thanks.

I bought this laptop last thursday and i love everything about the laptop and think its worth every dollar. After a couple of days playing around on the laptop i noticed that the battery lasted only 3 hours on a full charge, this was with bluetooth off and mild web surfing. I have the power setting on hp recommended and have all the options on default except the display which is set lower then suggested. Is it normal to get only 3 hours on this setting? Does anyone recommend a specific setting that allows high battery with the good performance?

arif, there ways to further customize the power options...go into it and you can adjust wi-fi signal strengths etc.

anyone upgraded this laptop to 8gb of ram yet? thinking about it now though 4gb hasnt been a slouch.

    just checked...

there are 2 pieces of Micron Technology 2GB DDR2 PC2 6400 (400MHz) in there...so if we want an 8gb...seems like these will be replaced.

Finally did it and brought one home last Sunday. I'm please so far but after trying to dig through manuals I can't seem to find info on wireless switching. The wireless switch seems to only be able to turn both wlan and bt on and off together and the bluetooth icon in the systray doesn't have a disable on the context menu. I have to go into connections to disable. Is there a secret I'm missing or do I just have to live with it this way?

Hey everyone, i have some question about the battery !
On the tests, the battery life is about 3h30-3h45, is that correct ?
And do u know if we use le laptop with 50% luminosity, WIFI, internet ? Divx ?

Do u know if another battery is available ? 9-cells, 12-cells ? And do u know where ?

    Thanks a lot !

(sorry for the bad english, i'm french !)

Don't think can give you accurate assessment about the battery life with those settings.

about the extra battery...unfortunately it is tough to find out now since HP has taken off the dv3500t page off their shopping site.

i would like to think like the dv4,dv5...these options would be available...but I guess we can only try to call and hope to find a helpful knowlegeable call agent.

I was looking at this for a handy around the house laptop, but had a question on the video. I want to use the dedicated only video memory, and not seep into the main memory for more... is there a way to disable the shared portion? My GF has the HP artist edition with AMD cpu and dedicated+shared video memory, and I found no way to disable sharing... so it reserves up to an extra gig of ram, just for video. How wasteful.

Hello, First Post here and came across this thread while google-ing some information. I have the dv3500t CTO that I bought from HP Sales.

    It's running the Intel T9400 @ 2.53 Ghz
    Vista 32-Bit
    512 NVidia GeForce 9300m GS
    3 GB Ram
    etc....

Question was that while on 'High Performance' Mode under Battery/AC settings, my laptop fans run full speed (they're loud) right away; I have even terminated all processes and left the computer sitting idle on a Targus USB Cooling Pad and it still runs high. However, the moment I switch over to Maximum Battery Settings, the fans turn off.

You guys have any ideas why this may be? I could understand that I was gaming or using a GPU/CPU intense app that it would kick in, but I have left it sitting idle with nothing running and it still runs high.

    Thanks.

I have had this or a similar issue a couple of times. Haven't been able to figure any specifics yet, but once I've had the fingerprint reader not recognized on wake up and a couple of times the computer will just hang on a blank screen and not wake up. A restart cures. No problems with wifi on wake up.

Hi, this is for other owners, occasionally I would be playing a game and the DV3510nr would crash? Does anyone else encounter this problem? I'm not sure if it is overheating (the bottom feels warm, but its actually cool compared to other laptops) or if this is a software issue.

I bought the DV3501nr last Saturday at Best Buy. I'm not enjoying all of the software included with the laptop. It seems a little too much. It's difficult to differentiate between bloatware and absolute necessary software.

I think the configuration sold at Best Buy is great except for the processor. It would've been nice if it came with the 8400.

I like the backlit keyboard, ports, storage, ram.

    I'm coming from a Dell Vostro 1400.

Mine had almost no bloatware, the only things I uninstalled were Norton and a few of the Windows Live apps (messenger, etc).

By far the cleanest HP I've purchased.

So you're saying all of those HP programs are necessary? It seems like it's stuffed with them. If there is a Windows and Intel wireless manager, why do you need one from HP? Or the update manager? It just seems like they weren't going for streamlined.

Also, I've been having issues with my browser, Avant. It seems to crash every so often.

    I love the laptop though.

hi there. can anyone tell me if:

    1) the DVD drive is easily removable/replaceable like the Dells? or do you have to take the laptop apart to take out the DVD drive?

    2) anyone have problems Vista 64-bit? (like running Flash or Java apps?)

    3) has anyone tried to wipe out the OS and reinstall with XP or Vista 32-bit? if so, how did everything work afterwards? was it hard to find the 32-bit drivers?

    thanks!
i'm trying to choose between the dv3510 and the dv4t. wish i had a coupon for bestbuy (or that they would lower the price a little ;))

HP to lower prices on 13-inch notebooks in 1H09

With Acer grabbing market share from Hewlett-Packard (HP) in the notebook market in the third quarter this year, HP has decided it will offer its 13-inch notebook models below US$800 in the first half of 2009 in order to regain its position in the market, according to market sources.

HP was not available for comment at the time of publishing

The company recently released its first 13-inch notebook, which is reportedly being marketed in the US for US$999. HP is trying make the 13-inch notebook segment the mainstream in 2009 and is pushing sales of a 16:9 aspect ratio for the segment, the market sources noted.

According to previous reports, the cost of 13-inch 16:9 aspect ratio panels will be lower than that for 14.0-inch panels because the 13-inch panels can be produced more economically at 5G TFT LCD plants.

Acer, for its parts, continues to aggressively market its netbook products, with the company currently in contact with over 20 telecommunication service providers to bundles its devices, the market sources added.

    1. DVD drive is easy to remove and it is SATA drive but cover it seems like itis attachet very hard to drive, didnt try to take cover off.

    2. No no problems with VISTA 64-bit runs smoothly, basically vista 64 makes emulation for 32bit soft and in most cases it runs well, i got only 3 or 4 which do not run.

    3. XP not supported by HP even on drivers page were is no drivers for this OS, I try to run XP live CD and it is crash with blue screen of death. VISTA 32 would run well because were are drivers on support page of HP only 3.4 Gb of ram will be used. But in normal conditions vista 64 uses 1.5-1.8 gigs of ram.

    1) The HP3XXX series optical drives do not come out like the modular bays in the Dell Inspiron or Latitude series. It would be nice, but to take the optical drive out you will need a philips screwdriver to take the drive out.

    2) Adobe does not make a 64-bit flash plugin. Adobe says you can use flash on the 32 bit version of IE which does come with the 64 bit Vista. Adobe as far as I know does not support and has no timeline to make a 64 bit Flash Plugin for Internet Explorer which in my opinion is plain stupid. Pretty much everything else that is current works in 64 bit Vista.

    3) I have downgraded current HPs and Dell laptops from Vista to XP. Yes, it can be a big hassle because the XP drivers are not with the model you bought. Unless you know what you are doing and what you are looking for, the task can be very daunting.

If you have 64 bit Vista why would you run it with anything less than 4 gigs of ram?

    Hope that answers your questions

    1) my question to knighthawke do you even saw HP DV3500 in real life?
Personally I have it, and i can say what optical drive can be take of from laptop with one click and push latch, (toddler or the button. ) and no Philips screwdriver if you do not trust me in the evening I put some photos!

    2) About flash plugins first of all IE suxz anyway, in second FLASH plugins works perfect on VISTA 64bit! In IE and in Fire FOX – it rullz.
    3) Yes you can downgrade, but were you can take drivers if even manufacturer do not provide them? Stupidest thing it is video driver others I think can be found in internet! Because NVIDIA do not provide drivers for mobile graphics only for desktops.

If you have 64 bit Vista why would you run it with anything less than 4 gigs of ram?
    Agreee!
BUUUT! All the soft in 64bit vista eating two times more RAM so think logically your RAM on 64bit will be full much more faster than on 32bit and loosing of some 0.5Gb in 32 bit is better than loosing 2Gb from 4Gb.

HP does not sell any other DV35xx in the states, The only model of that series that is sold in the US is the Blue Label and only ay Best Buy, the DV3510nr. The 35xx in Europe which is still available might have a latch but the series in the states does not. So in reference you and I are right. You are welcome to check the the sites in the US and you will agree that there is not push latch on the DV3510nr. One great thing the model in the US has that yours does not is the Backlit Keyboard. But I certain you can get that part and install it on your machine without any problems.

If you looked at my post. Flash does work for the 32bit version of IE in Vista 64. All Microsoft 64 Bit OSs like Vista and XP come with two versions of it's browser. So yeah Flash does work with Vista just not using the 64 bit Browser. When it comes to browers Flash is still Flash no matter what brower you like. It is still owned by Adobe.

    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=6b3af6c9

Most of the drivers are available from HP you just need to know what you are doing and where to look. It's a pain like I said but very possible. All the hardware is pretty much common parts. Intel, NVIDIA, Realtek etc etc

I don't quite know what you are trying to say about the ram but 32-bit OS can only use a little bit more than 3 gigs of ram. 64 bit systems can use over 100x more. You are not going to lose anything by switching from a 32 bit system to a 64 bit OS.

Running a program in 64-bit does not automatically double the RAM usage over 32-bit. That's not right.

The dv3510nr from Best Buy definitely has a removable optical drive like harddy said. It's a simple latch that you slide and the drive pops right out. No screwdriver needed.

Ok My mistake, we looked at the our display model of the DV3510nr and it does slide out. We were looking for the latch that would look like Dell's and didn't see it. The latch is located underneath the body and near the middle of the laptop.

So if the optical drive is modular does that mean a bay battery is likely to become available?

This is not possible as there is no secondary battery connector on the motherboard to accomodate this feature.

Re: *OFFICIAL: HP DV3500T Owners Lounge*

I am really interested to buy this model, but am torn between this 13.3 NB as compared to the DV4 14.1 model. Can anybody give feedbacks as to which one is a better buy, technically?

depending on your usage...which DV4 are you talking about? with which graphic card?

the 9300M GS is ok for light gaming but might not be sufficient if you compare it to the DV4 with the better graphic card.

i chose the dv3500 because i was used to a 13.3" vaio and i like the backlit keyboard...also the dv3510nr from bestbuy seem like good value for money.
the lcd is great but i wish they had better options instead of just 1280x800.

hp giving bestbuy 'exclusive rights' has been quite a pain for me, since they took down the shopping page for it and hence we can't find out what accessories are available for it easily.

battery life realistically will be 2hr45mins-3hrs...

Thanks for the feedback regarding the DV3 and DV4. The problem here in Malaysia is that the DV3 specs is not that good at all. Intel Core 2 duo T5800 plus it doesnt have the backlit keyboard. The DV4 uses P8400 and has the built in integrated TV tuner! Price diff is only USD$80.

Seems that other variants like the upgrde to 8Gig Memory with backlit not available here. Have looked at various PC retail shops. Perhaps, they might be available in Singapore? Any idea how to verify?

    Thanks.
