The left palm rest heat is hit or miss. If you have the WD hard drive, you shouldn't have a problem...

what about the Nvidia graphics card? I remember reading about someone having a problem with it causing the screen to blackout? What's the deal with that?

Hi all, I am thinking of getting a dv4t because of the LED screen, but I have 2 questions:

Is it worth paying to upgrade from the 6 cell battery to the “High Capacity” 6 cell battery? What’s the difference?

Should I pay the extra $50 to upgrade from 2GB RAM to 3GB RAM, or can I upgrade later if I just get the 2GB? How many slots are there for RAM upgrades exactly?

Would this system work well with 2 GB ram?

    • Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P7350 (2.0GHz)
    • 14.1" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
    • 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
    • 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    • • Wireless-G Card with Bluetooth
    • No Integrated WWAN
    • Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    • High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Will the dv4t support 8GB of DDR2 RAM when it comes out? Or does it support it now?

Could somebody please check if the screw holes of their DV4(t) are in the same place as in the picture attached to this post ? Or could somebody take a picture of their keyboard with screw holes visible? You only have to unscrew 3 screws on the bottom to find out...

I would like to replace my french keyboard of the DV4 laptop I ordered (it will arrive in about 1,5 week) with a US one. I ordered a US keyboard on eBay, but the shops asks me to check if the screw holes are in the same place because this is the first time they sell this keyboard...

The High Capacity” 6 cell battery has 16% more battery life than the standard one.

You can upgrade from 2GB to 3GB yourself for less. You can find 2GB modules for about $25-30. Like most laptops, there are 2 memory slots.

If you only use it for standard office applications, email and internet, 2GB would be enough. For things like photo/video editing, games, etc 3GB is recommended.

To answer my own question about finding out the position of keyboard screws:

I found a picture of the underside of the DV4(t). That helps me already, but still, a picture of the bottom of the keyboard itself would be even better...

I've read on HP's Website that 8GBs were supported. At least my model was (HP DV4-1112TX).

    Hi everybody.
Yesterday I purchased the HP dv4-1123us laptop. The specs were good and the price really sweet but unfortunately I’ve run into problems.

The biggest problem is that while the wifi is on, all audio (DVD, mp3s, windows sounds, everything!) make a crackling noise every few seconds. If I turn the wifi off then the audio is normal.
I’ve tried it with headphones, same thing, so it’s not a speaker problem. I’ve updated to the latest drivers, nothing. I’ve downgraded some drivers, nothing. I’ve made combinations of drivers used, nothing.

I’ve looked online and there seem to be more people with the same problem. Some of them had dv4 laptops, some had other hp and some had other brands… Some of them (not with HP) managed to get rid of the problem with driver updates but it doesn’t seem to work for me.
I just want to know if any of you has/had the same problem and if there is a solution. I also want to know if this is a well-known problem for the dv4 series or it’s just me (and a few others). If I find no solution I will have to return the laptop but I want to know if I should ask for a replacement (hoping that it won’t have the same problem) or ask for my money back and start looking for another laptop (not HP this time..).

    The specs of dv4-1123us are:
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P5800 (2GHz)
    4GB DDR2 System Memory
    Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
250GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive
Wireless: Broadcom 4322AG 802.11a/b/g draft-n Wifi Adapter, Driver Version: 4.170.77.3
Audio Driver: IDT High Definition Audio Coded, Driver Version: 6.10.6017.13

    Thanks

    EDIT:
It seems that I found the solution in another thread about the same problem on a Dell..
I just turned off the 802.11a and the problem seems to be fixed... i was looking for a solution all day and it was that simple..
Now I need to do some more testings and decide if I'm keeping it or not.

8GB of DDR2 is already available, not sure if the DV4t supports it or not, but at USD 800+ you might want to wait a while. ;)

I just purchased this notebook and it came a few days ago.
Got it with a 320gb 5400 hard drive and the 512 9200gs graphics card
    and intel wifi 5100 card.

I removed a lot of the bloatware it came with and did the tweaks found
in the tech forum. The only issue I found so far is that when booting up,
although it loads quick to the login screen, after I log in I still have to wait
like 2-3 minutes before I can do anything. The wireless card doesn't pick
up any signals before that either.

    Any Suggestions?
    Thanks~

I had just received my second DV4t today and it had a missing 12 cell battery in the package again! That's the second time it has happened. The first time it happened with my first DV4t I had called and it took them too long to ship it so I decided to return the laptop to upgrade to a dedicate video card and more hard drive space. I thought the 2nd laptop wouldn't have the missing 12 cell, but I guess I was wrong. Is there any reason why they would forget to pack the 12 cell twice?

Thinking about a performance upgrade my my system and installing a 7200RPM drive. Has anyone tried this?

    Any thoughts?

I figure a SATA 3.0Gb/s notebook drive is what I am looking for?

Hello i just bought a DV4-1124nr from circuit city for $599. The laptop has been nothing but disappointing. But my main issue is that when i am browsing the web it will run strong for about 2 minutes and then eventually get stuck loading a page for hours. When i restart it it will work again for another 2 minutes and then freeze up on another page. I've tried to connecting to other routers but to no avail the same issue keeps happening. Anyone having this problem? I would return it if i could but CC will charge me 15% restocking fee.

P.S.- Is it me or is the fan ridiculously annoying. I checked off "always on" in bios but its still annoying.

@the_1: This is my first laptop (desktop user for 20 or so years) and I didn’t know what to expect from the screen . It’s not perfect, there are reflections and since I’m usually trying to save up battery I have the brightness on 10% so I haven’t really tested it thoroughly in various light conditions and brightness levels. I’m satisfied though.

@2thdrinWA: Problem solved as soon as I turned off the 802.11a

@htn2: Same thing happens to me, it takes a few minutes to completely load and to let me change the Power Plan or the Network connection on the taskbar. Oh but I can push start etc…

@lians60: I only use mine (it’s the 1123us) on wireless and it works just fine. Actually the range is pretty good, better than my girlfriend’s macbook. And the fan is not that bad, actually not bad at all, a bit louder than the macbook though.

My only problem is the battery life. It will hardly go over 3 hours, even on Power Saver, brightness set to 10% but with wireless turned on. Maybe I should uninstall HP Wireless Assistant and test it on Vista’s default wireless controller (as it looks for new networks it consumes battery)
Btw: I’m new to laptops and new to vista

Is the 12-cell battery available yet?

I'm getting tired of my DV4-1112TX running about 2 hours when surfing the net on the "Power Saver" settings.

I've read through 50+ pages of this thread and alot of people seemed to be having problems with the QuickTouch and audio. I was wondering have those problems been fixed? I am thinking of buying the Dv4t really soon but I want to know beforehand if these problems are fixable.

I just got my dv4t CTO (at last). And I'm happy I got it its fast beautiful...etc

    BUT
I have a few issues with it.

    1. The temps seem high. It has a T5800 2 ghz and the Hitachi :( 250GB HD (was hoping for a WD) and the temps (from HwMonitor 1.12) are:

    IDLE (while browsing)
    (CPU usage 0 -20)
    THRM: 57 C - 61C
HD: 49-51 ( is this hot?)

    WHILE BROWSING AND INSTALLING OFFICE:
    (CPU USAGE AVG: 90-100)
    THRM: MIN 68C ....It went to 73 C !!!
HD: 49-55 ( is this hot?)

    Are these temps good?
Why is the THRM temp going so high?
Where can I get a good notebook cooler for the dv4t?

    2. I also have got 3 BSODs since I got it 3 days ago. I'm not sure what they are about..could it be the heat.

3.It also seems as if HwMonitor does not read the temps for T5800. It and some other programs (PC Wizard) thinks its T7250 and wont update the temps in real time. Why?

EDIT Also while checking the BIOS I saw a 'Fan Always On' and it was set to 'YES' is it safe to turn this off. (I think the fan is a bit load and annoying.)

    Thanks

I have i pavilion dv4 was bought from Dubai a month ago as present a i got it 3 days ago, I have a problem whit the temperatures on the device, at idle the temp are in celsius(fahrenheit): 50 (122) hdd, gpu 47(116.6) cpu 40(104) , for testing i tried a game-counter strike source and the gpu got as far as 80(176) cpu above 60(140) and hdd 58(136.4). The funny thing is in the user manual temps for western digital hard drives are from 5-55(41-131) deg .My room temp is from 22-25(71.7-77) deg is this normal and if there are people reading please if you have any experience whit this models post your temperatures. Reinstaled the Acpi fixed Feature button, scaned the hdd and nothing updated all drivers and the bios is the last version f14. For the readings I use Everest from Lavalys

My exact model is dv4-1135ee and Vista Home Premium 32bit.

^ yes they can be replaced. there is no proprietary connection. and for the most part, hard drives run warm regardless of their capacity.

just ensure that the hard drive you are buying is the same connecter as the laptop. the dv4t uses a sata hard drive.

thus, you have to make sure the drive you are ordering is a sata 2.5" (laptop) hard drive.

Hi all, I just got my dv4-1123us last week and was wondering if anyone has a recommendation on a good laptop sleeve for it? I had bought the Case Logic 14.1" Security Friendly sleeve, but it's a bit big/loose. I would like to find one that's a snug fit. Thanks!

    Hey guys-
wondering if you guys might be able to help me out. Ive had my dv4t for a few months now...i dig it for the most part...but over the last month have run into a few problems.

1st...the quickbuttons amove the keyboard are non responsive...they are lit but dont react to touch at all.

2nd. Today my fingerprint reader stopped working

3rd. at the same time as the print reader my usb ports seem to have gone bad...at first i thought my usb/mouse had gone bad but i tested it on anthr machine.

i keep getting a message that tells me "the USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned"...even when nothing is plugged in.

has anyone else had similar problems? where you able to resolve them?

    thanks in advance

Hey folks, just bought a dv4-1028us and I had a couple of questions regarding system recovery.

I want to do a clean Vista install with no HP bloatware whatsoever. What is the best way to achieve this with HP notebooks? Is there a recovery partition or will it come with a recovery disc? Remember, I don't want factory settings - I want to completely wipe the hard drive.

    There is a recovery partition.

You will need to have your own Vista disk to do the clean install, you can use the same serial number.

There is a folder on the C-drive that you will need to back up, the folder name escapes me at the moment. It contains drivers and software installs. For instance, if your laptop has blu-ray you will need to qplay to play movies, otherwise you have to buy a $100 program.

Count me in. As of this week Ive joined the ranks of owning the dv4t. Enjoying it so far. I do have one question though...is there a way to get it to change power settings for when its plugged in vs battery?

Right now I have it on the performance setting, but Id like it to change when I go to battery use. Is there a way to get it to do that itself that I just havent found? Thanks!

Hi, sorry to go off topic but im a new 1028us owner and have a question im hoping someone can comment on.
After turning it on and letting it go thru its set up and updates, i immediately noticed a 'noisy' cpu....when i say noisy, i mean you can hear it working....kinda like clickclickclickclick.....is this normal for a brand new laptop with a P8400 centrino 2 processor and 4mb of ram?
I have an old Toshiba and dont ever recall the same noise...i do recall that noise when my 8 yr old Dell was really starting to slow down.....

Any comments would be helpful.....should i be worried?

thanks. another question- if I'm going to be using this in europe, is there a special ac power adapter I can buy? with my current laptop I'm just using a small socket converter.. I'm wondering if there is a better/safer/smarter alternative? I've had friends who got european equivalents for their macbooks. Can I ge something similar from HP?

hi guys - I bought my Dv4t with lowest specs, and propose an update by myself...
    1. CPU t3200, shall I upgrade the CPU to a higher one like P8600? Provided I use the integrated x4500 video card, to what effect will this upgrade improve the running and heat?
    2. memory 2gig, make any sense if upgrade to 4gig?
    3. WAN card, should update to Intel 5100? Can it be updated to 5300 or not?
    4. 250 hard disk. I had a hitachi 320gig, very quite and cool now using as a portable disk. If I replace the hard disk with this, would solve the heating problem to some extend, I presume?

    1) Why'd you go for the lowest specs? Probably kicking yourself, as you already want to upgrade, lol
    2) Unless you have Vista 64-Bit, there's really no reason to get anymore than 3GB
    3) WAN shouldn't matter, I got the HP WLAN + Bluetotoh and have had ZERO problems with connectivity or range, Intel is selling the name
    4) I have the 250 HDD and it gets warm at times, but originally the heating problem was with the 160GB drives...with that being said I thinks its just the design of the laptop or its hit & miss.

I got one of these for my brother for xmas yesterday. First time I ever switched it on I got the 'windows did not shut down properly' error... :/ not good.

It loaded up fine the next time so I continued to install programs like office

However, when I restarted it, it said Explorer has crashed, a black screen showed with just the cursor.

So I Ctrl+Alt+Deleted and logged out and back in again and it was fine.

Seems a bit dodgy for a brand new laptop. I've never had issues like that with my dv5.

My new DV4T with T5800 CPU and 9200M graphics is very loud when the fan is on anything other than the lowest speed. If I run something CPU intensive, it sounds like a dang vacuum cleaner. It's the loudest laptop I've ever heard. Installing the latest BOIS didn't help. Has anyone found a way to tame the fan noise?

I'm so impressed with my new dv4-1028us. This thing is a BEAST! It feels faster than my Sager NP2096 lol

Amazing specs for a great price:
    P8400
    4GB RAM
    320GB 5400RPM HDD
    Intel GMA 4500MHD
    Vista 64-bit

All for $589. How insane is that??

I'd like to know if there is a fix for this too... Even on idle the one I have is loud, it drowns out the noise of my dv5 which is quiet as a mouse in comparison.

It also makes clunky mechanical noises when loading up, like it's set to search for different components on startup or something...

Even the reviews mention these issues:

Wondering where you got it from for that price? I am looking to purchase either online or from a shop in the US, and that model lookls like it fits the bill. Want one with integrated graphics for longer battery and less heat/noise than the NVIDIA card.

    Cheers

Anyone? I would like this as well. What is the name of the folder to backup? I would like the HP control center, but everything else, that is non-essential, I do not want on there. What are my best options?

Does anyone know if this is true?

I got it from Circuit City after price matching the Big Lots deal they had a couple of weeks ago. It was probably the best deal I've ever seen on a laptop.

The name of the folder you want to back up is called SwSetup (located right when you click on your C: drive). I just did a clean install using orev's stickied guide found in this HP forum so take a look at that. You will need a Vista installation disc though, so ask around for one.

The default fan setting for these notebooks is "always on".

If you want a fix to the fan issue, follow these steps:

    1. Hit Esc at the initial boot screen when you start your notebook.
    2. Hit F10 to go into the System BIOS setup.
    3. Scroll over to the System Configuration tab.
    4. Select Fan Always On and disable this setting.
    5. Restart.

    ;)

@MrPresident, I was about to type that. Good Job nonetheless. I keeps the fan off when not needed but when it does go on, there'll be noises. It's not like really that bad, all laptops make noises anyway. The really silent ones are the netbooks. I wish there's a way to adjust the speed of CPU to the level of just above a netbook. That should keep it quiet.

ps. I have a Samsung NC10 and 1.6Ghz atom is more than enough power to do most tasks.

Yeah, it definitely won't fix the fan noise, but I think it's a great solution if the fan is constantly bugging you.
