Alright so I just installed the Windows 7 RC on a partition on my dv4t and I can't seem to find the driver for the track pad so the little scrolly thing on this side works. Also the touch volume control. If anyone knows where they are I would appreciate it :D

Hey yall, I'm wondering how our temperatures compare when just surfing web and stuff

    I used HWMonitor:

    (T6400) CPU: 39 C
    Core 1: 44 C
    Core 2: 45 C

    Nvidia 105M: 42 C

To be honest I don't really know what these numbers mean much since I've never had a laptop b4..

When I was playing Crysis on it, the GPU went up to like 60-70~ C...

Hi. I bough my dv4 1080 es in Spain. So, temperature of HDD up to 60 degres of Celsius. With open bottom case of HDD feel that temperature of HDD is higher than wi-fi modul.

    go to c:/swsetup/drivers

there are a bunch of folders.

install each one by right click RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR

if you don't it won't install properly. win7 might give you a pop up just say It installed correctly.

    reboot.

there is an ALPS Touch pad driver (will add new tabs when you go to mouse settings (allowing you to setup what tapping each corner will do and overall sensitivity) this will also restore vertical scrolling and i believe there is an option to set up horizontal scrolling and how much of the track pad reacts to each.

I believe the IDT driver (for audio) will give you back touch controls and also make the white/red mute option work again.

Just run all the drivers to be on the safe side, if you went from Vista 32 to Win7 64, I recommend going to HP support for DVT-1400 and finding the 64 bit drivers there.

Most importantly, run all setup.exe as RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR for best results.

I installed Win7 from day one. I didn't even make recovery disks lol. I just copied SWSETUP/Drivers to a disk, put in WIN 7 RC1, made a 200gb partition and another 90 (left the recovery behind) and was good to go.

Undernearth my name there is like a scale icon? Click that and i think you can comment on why i deserve some rep. Thanks btw. Hope that helps you out! Win7 has a slider control from no bugs to VISTA annoying for UAC. So for those paranoid androids out there, you don't have to completely disable it.

That's pretty good. Where I live its very hot. The laptop will automatically begin shutting down threads at 85c, its a built in Intel thing.

The videocard will get hot while running crysis. There is no direct fan as it shares the same heatpipe and fan with the CPU. on my pc, i seen it go up to 85c.

I've had the gpu get to 80c on the notebook. I would get worried if it got to 100c on the GPU, but at that rate, the CPU would probably reach 85 and being throttling.

The cooling system seems adequate, about 30s to 1 min after stopping a gpu/cpu intensive program the fan shuts off.

I been playing 3-4 hours daily of Company of Heroes Tales of Valor, and not run into any throttling issues even with 90F degree ambient temp lol. It's damn hot where i live.

    UPDATE:

Yes, that is normal actually. I think alot of the heat on this laptop gets stuck near the harddrive. Also the harddisk doesnt have it's own fan. I have gotten uncomfortable with my hand there, but my ambient temperatures arent helping me. I plan on buying a 200mm fan cooling pad to help. I don't have a problem with the heat when I'm not gaming, but as i like to play Company of Heroes alot for extended amounts of time, the cooling fan should help loads. Sometimes i run my fan on my desk against the screen, the reflected air cools me and the laptop off and i notice the notebook was alot cooler.

Also HP wraps the Harddrive in some weird plastic wrap. I think this is not a good thing. Would you put a heater in a plastic bag? lol. I think alot of the heat is getting trapped in there due to the black plastic, but i wont remove it. I hear people with ssd still have alot of heat there i guess just becuase all the air under the laptop is warm, it doesn help with cooling the HD

Yes, I always download the newest Nvidia driver or beta that is available.

NOTE: 186 breaks scaling. you will only be able to use the monitors built in scaling (aka if you play a game at 800x600 it wont be aspect ratio correct). I tend to use Nvidia scaling with aspect ratio. cant until they fix this again.

If you wanna be a gangster check out www.laptopvideo2go.com for leaked drivers.

DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. lol I've downloaded pretty crappy Quattro drivers with modded ini's that actually lowered my fps lol. Check out www.guru3d.com forums for feedback on drivers.

All the same the notebook is heated around HDD to 60 degrees. Usually 50-55. Somehow it is possible to solve this problem? Whether also a problem it?

Maybe get a really portable foldable cooling pad? I don't have a pad right now, and i been taking it around with me and it hasn't gotten hot enough. I really dont know anything else that can be done.

To compare, atm i have 4 harddrives in my desktop computer next to two fans which blow air continuously on them from the ambient air. 45-50c.

so 10c more from the laptop isnt bad considering no airflow. unless you can make some sort of metal heatsink, but then you would probably have to make sure you dont touch it.

Hey guys do any of you guys know of any good drivers/software for the dv4t touchpad that adds more functionality? like my friend's dell laptop can add shortcuts to the 4 corners of his trackpad. like he can assign middle click to the top right corner tap.

Just the ALPS driver that it comes with. Your friend's dell probably uses a different manufacturer.

so the synaptic drivers wouldnt work with the dv4t touchpad? the alps touchpad already recognizes the 4 corners as shortcuts, its just that it wont let me point them to middle click instead of program shortcuts.

I don't know which driver you are referencing. You could give it a try, but i doubt it. Look for an updated ALPS driver.

For most games that need middle click i usually use a mouse or Z.

    Another option:

i guess you press both buttons to make a middle click. this might be in our driver. im on my desktop atm so i can't check.

yes i already know about the left+right click = middle click shortcut.
but i find it tedious. i need middle click because i use it alot in firefox. i use it for closing tabs, undo tab close, zooming pictures.

Sorry about that, I never really use a touchpad and usually go keyboard shortcut routes. I've found some linux drivers which do what you want, but no one has attempted to make some for windows.

No bump here. If it is popped up, probably from the build process - some component not set right when the screen was assembled. Ship it back for a new one.

it seems like those who ordered their DV4 units earlier (like myself) are also in the clear for the free upgrade.. i got a letter with my DV4t informing me that i an eligible to participate in the windows 7 upgrade program..also it cleary states " The program will enable customers who purchase qualifying HP PCs to enjoy the benefits of a new Windows-based PC immediately and receive a free(1) upgrade to Windows 7 when it becomes available in October. ) so not only are all pcs from this day on will be eligible..but those who also purchased a DV4t and recieved that letter of eligibility will also get their windows 7 free so we can breath easy now lol..lets cheer for a move on from vista although personally i dont see anything annoying or terrible about vista..the permission before doing anything is a little annoying but i like the windows dream scene content ( i am running ultimate) which windows 7 wont have (rumored ) because microsoft discontinued dream scene

Ok can anyone tell me why my letter 'D' squeaks whenever I press it? It started happening just 1 day after coming, and it gets pretty damn freakin' annoying whenever I have to press it a lot.. (especially whenever I have to move right in a game..) No other key does this sound..

Any way to fix it?? it's hella annoying to hear..

And are you able to pull keys out of the keyboard and put them back?

Go to Start, click on your USER icon, disable User Account Control.

    OR:

To disable the UAC, enter the Control Panel and type UAC in the search box.

The first result returned by the search will be User Accounts – Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off.

Turn it off. No more annoying.

i wonder how is this upgrade program going to work..im assuming customers will be allowed to upgrade to a corresponding windows 7 version that they current have on vista..for exam - vista home premium users will get upgrade option to windows 7 home premium, vista business - 7 business, vista ultimate - 7 ultimate and so on..currently the upgrade price for windows 7 ultimate (using W7 preorder upgrade program) is $219 which is just ridiculous (personal opinion).. i dont think ill ever pay that much for a stand alone OS..i would just buy a new pc which would come with the OS pre-installed

well im affraid i have some bad news for those who ordered their DV4ts before the 25th...

Q: I purchased an HP PC, but I did not see a flyer for the Windows ® 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP in the box. Do I still qualify?

To be eligible for the Windows ® 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP, your PC must meet all the eligibility requirements. If it does, then it is eligible for the program even though there was no flyer in the box.

it seems that we who previously brought our DV4ts are screwed for the update. although we have gotten the eligibility slip for the windows 7 upgrade option, we will not be eligible for it..now thats a bummer

Went to Best Buy this morning, and finally saw a Moonlight White DV4T. VERY NICE! It wasn't a configuration I was interested in, but definitely looked great. They also had the new Dell 14z, which I was also considering along with the DV4T. It looked nice, but the keyboard on the HP was way better for me, and I really prefer the 16:10 screens instead of 16:9. So, now I'm sold on the DV4T, and especially now that I've seen the Moonlight White in person, and also now that the Windows 7 upgade program is active. I just have to wait for a better coupon deal on the HP site so I can configure and buy. :D

I called HP Sales in the US and confirmed what Intox said above. I am within my 21 day return period and with the current July 4th Sale I could get the same build for about $60 more......sooo, I had the Sales dept. transfer me to the Customer Service Escalation Dept (in the Phillipines) told them I was going to send the computer back and order a new one to get the upgrade unless they issued a credit for the difference. The rep said to go ahead, so I got his name, employee ID number and went up the food chain to his Manager. Same deal, got his name, employee number, and told them they were being really stupid - they were going to have to pay to ship my computer back and re-sell it as a reconditioned unit at about a $300-$400 loss. Was going to write HP when all done, with their names. I got a credit for the difference between the additiontal amount to buy the same build and the cost to upgrade, less another discount when I called a few weeks ago to complain about another coupon that issued within my 21 day return period. It pays to make noise - HP does have outstanding customer service if you get to a decision maker.

Hi, I need some help :)
I am an incoming freshman this fall, and I am planning to buy a new laptop this month. I tried configuring the dv4t on hp's website, and struggled in two categories. Battery life is my top priority and then performance. (I only plan to play SC,CS,SC2, or other light games)

    Processor:
    Intel Core2 Duo Processor T6600 (2.2GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    or
    Intel Core2 Duo Processor P7450 (2.13GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
    or
    Intel Core2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)

[another question: is the P8600 beneficial over the T6600 and the P7450 with the light gaming I am planning to do?]

    Graphics Card:
    IntelGraphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
    or
    512MB NVIDIA GeForce G 105M

The main difference between the T-series and the P-series is that T-series are manufactured on 65nm while the P-series is 45nm. The later use less power, that equals more battery-time (and of course less heat :) )

More info on the CPU's (from cpu-world.com)
    Intel T6600
    Intel P7450
    Intel P8600
Disclaimer: The P7450 and the P8600 comes in two variants, but I can't spot the difference. A list of all the the Core 2 Duo Mobile CPU's can be found here. Keep in mind that there exist CPU's that are not mentioned in the list..

From what I can tell after reading the spec sheets, the only difference is that one version is a "boxed retail" cpu and the other version is the OEM cpu, as mentioned in the notes section for each one. Otherwise, they are the same.

Also, in terms of actual performance, there is not really that much difference between the P7450 & P8600. That being said, I'm still opting to go with the P8600 when I finally place my order.

Incorrect. While true that some T-series are manufactured on the 65nm process, the T6600 you speak of is actually also based on the Penryn core and manufactured on 45nm. However, the P-series have a lower TDP of 25W while the T-series have a TDP of 35W. This difference translates to better battery life and less heat.

    Hey guys,

Just curious if anyone else has noticed this (depends how good your eyes are). Just purchased a DV3-2007tx (might be an AUS model) and the bottom half of the screen is brighter than the top half, ie as if there is a decent light bleed along the bottom. Not as noticeable on bright screens, desktop, bright scene movies etc, but on dark movies (or widescreen movies with black bars), can easily notice a difference in the level of black at the top and bottom of the monitor. Its as if the bottom has the brightness turned up and washes the black out.

Anyone else notice this? The stupid guy at the place I purchased it tells me 'he can't notice it' while looking at it under fluorescent store lights (umm obviously, look in low light and you can notice it).

Curious to see if this is a common or once of thing? Is it just HP screens?

    Cheers,

    Michael

I am hoping someone can help me here since HP support sucks!!!

I just got a brand new dv4t and it worked great for about a week then fingerprint reader failed, could not connect to the internet, could not log in at all, could not load my desktop at all....and many others.
HPs solution to reset my computer 2 days back 2X then to reimage completely. So after 9 hrs on the phone, yes 9 for a brand new computer that had as HP support stated "minor problems" i.e not connecting to internet really one of the main functions of the device seems to be working ok. However, my touchpad does not work. I installed the driver but the little icon does not light up and after searching the web I cannot come up with a solution. I mean I know its a minor thing however this is a brand new laptop everything should be in tip top shape, right?

anyway, thanks ahead for the help

Sure: 1 (866) 433-2018 Get in contact with Sales, describe your issue; be sure to take down the names of everyone you talk to. Tell them you are shipping it back if they don't get it resolved. Ask to be transferred to the "Escalation Dept. of Customer Service" You need to go higher up in the food chain to get a US Based Technical Support expert. Hope this helps.

Good news Mofo - until July 11 you can pre-order Windows 7 upgrade from 50-58% off. Just go to Microsoft.com. I have the 64bit Vista Home Premium and my upgrade was 49.99 plus tax (58% off the retail price of $119).

Is this normal? I purchased my DV4t CTO notebook last June 29 and after 2-3days it went to ORDER IN PRODUCTION

As of now, July 5, 2009 it's still posted as ORDER in PRODUCTION..

Estimated Build Date is July 10, 2009

I'm pretty much worried about the shipment days since I badly need to receive the package on or before July 15 and I'll bring the notebook with me when I travel abroad. I cannot change my flight date ofcourse.

    Any ideas??

You should receive your computer before the estimated build date or the day after. That's been my experience, and I've ordered twice. Also, it seems like many others have received theirs before the build date too. I received mine a day before the estimated build date, and I think others received same day or the day after.

I ordered mine on June 23, and I will get it tomorrow or Tuesday.
