I think your hard drive is relatively hot, compared to other hard drives, because most run at temperatures from 35 to 45 degrees Celsius. However, it looks like yours maintain a certain range of temperatures below 50 degrees Celsius, which is a good thing for youand a bad thing for me

hey PlanetEarth i have a friend who works in hp,said the reason why hp's offering an upgrade to 250GB free is bcuz people keep having problems with the 160GB....well she's not working in any essential departments only sales, big chance that she's making it up...anyway,i suggest you to call them up n ask for a free exchange/upgrade to a 250GB HDD, but dont send in your laptop try to ask them to send a hard drive to you, then have somebody change it for you.
i dunno if this is going to work as smooth as the way i said it. you probably have to add some tone when you talk to them....
with you condition its really not looking good.well,i'l probably have to do it too afterall. -
BTW, I did some test
It confuses me... It looks like my hard drive is normal if I open the hard drive bay cover.
So, before opening the hard driver cover or doing anything else, the hard drive temperature reached 48 degrees Celsius from 27 degrees Celsius in about 30 minutes. Then, using a fan, I blew air to the area where the hard drive cover was located. Because the fan was powerful and the hard drive cover has vents, the hard drive temperature significantly dropped from 48 degrees C to about 38 degrees Celsius. Then, it went to about 43~45 degrees Celsius when I stopped.
So, I decided to open the cover and to place the notebook so that the hard drive and the wireless module could contact the air, not the desk. Now, it is 43 degrees celsius. It went to 45 degrees but then dropped back to 43 degrees Celsius. It's staying at that temperature. It looks like the cover captures a lot of heat. What doesn't make sense to me is that the hard drive cover certainly has more vents than that of my old notebook. The wireless module generates more heat than the hard drive, but I don't think it affects the hard drive temperature much.
The hard drive cover is, of course, made of plastic... It has some kind of aluminum to protect the wireless module from electric charge (I think), but there are only vents on the cover for the hard drive. -
I think that since they are so close to each other that the wireless modual is heating the part of the hard drive that has the temperature sensor; giving a somewhat false reading.
-
this is weird..if it really has something to do with the cover then that should apply to any other dv4t users as well. we could ask them to check but i dont think anybody's actually going to do it....
can you find any other covers to match it? or like stuck something in between? i kno this is a stupid question but you cant go around with you notebook open like that... -
-
I can't go around with the dv4t likt this...
There's, of course, nothing that fits the cover...
Well... I might ask HP to send another one... Or, when yours arrives, please let me know what temperatures you get -
Hey, guys...
Do you think there's anything wrong with this hard drive?
I used Everest for this, but I don't understand.
To me, it looks like my hard drive is just fine.Attached Files:

This is my first time posting here but I have been following the posts for 2 weeks now. I should receive my dv4t today or tomorrow.
I chose the P-Series Processor and the free upgrade to the 250GB hard drive.
I have never checked my computer temp., but I will when I receive it...I will keep you all posted. -
mike_p's seems okay and he's got the hitachi one too. mine left china this morning so i should be getting it monday, if not tomorrow. i'll let you guys know how mine is too. i also have the 250g hdd and a P series processor (2.0 GHz).
-
Please keep us posted. I want to know temperatures of other dv4t's.
I should have chosen the P series, but I just chose the T9600. -
I should have chosen the P series...
Anyway, yes! Please let us know what you get with the CPU and especially the hard drive! -
i have another silly question. how shiny is the part that's not the touchpad? i know the touchpad is basically like a mirror. is the rest of the area also as shiny? all the pictures are sooo reflective.. -
It's hard to take pictures of the dv4t if you don't want to see the keyboard or the palm rest area reflective or shiny.
But, it is inevitable... The whle notebook except the bottom of it is very reflective. Also, the whole laptop except the bottom is a huge fingerprint reader -
besides the possibly overheating problem, do you think it's a good laptop overall? i was so tempted to cancel it last night and get the dv2700t sp ed cause it's not like 150 cheaper than when i got the dv4t. that was before i found out they'd shipped it. then i thought i might as well try it out cause there's that 21 day return period.
i also still want to put xp on it.. i'm in engineering, so i'm not sure if i'll be able find stuff like matlab and solidworks for vista that i can get more easily. see how it goes i guess.. -
so i asked this earlier and decided to wait until people actually got their laptop...
it seems like no one is in love wtih this laptop for the past 30 posts its all been about heating issues... is it even worth it to get this laptop? ive been waiting for months just to get it and im still waiting on better coupons to come out. I passed up some really good dv2700 coupons and im starting to regret it... actually to be honest im losing trust in hp, my friends dell e1505 from 2 years ago is running strong still while my dad and I have both gone through a dv6000 each and every hp ive dealt with seems to have glitchy problems... lately. Like i go to costco to buy a temp computer and then return them later but theyre giving me headaches... -
i'm hoping this one will last me a good 4 years or so. even if i'm not in love with it or anything (wasn't with my old dell inspiron, but it was still good for how i treated it.. dropped it on the floor a few times from my bed..). i'm hoping investing more in a laptop will make it worth it. my sister had her old compaq for less than two years, and my dad just got her an acer for like 400 bucks. i have a feeling that won't last. anyway when i first say the dv5z at best buy i thought it was such a slick laptop, and minus the heat problems, as long as the hardware lasts, i think i'll be all good. -
hi, all
my history was started with a dv2700t. I purchased a dv2700t at last month [almost]. sooner after purchase, I found out the article about defected graphic card from Nvidia. I then called HP and returned my lappy with a 8400m gs inside. as an exchange, HP offered me similar price dv4t. I will expect the lappy next week Turs.
I have some records about the temperature from dv2700t, and i would like to share with u guys.
the dv2700t I had,
it has a toshiba Hard drive 250 GB, idle temp is around 42~45, when browsing internet and wording, temp can hit 48~50. when gaming and downloading, HDD can reach 51~54. As some of u guys alrdy knew, the left palm side is always warm, but not uncomfortable.
it also has a geforce 8400m GS Graphic card. idle temp is around 41~45, when encoding movie or playing CS, temp will reach 62 [thats about the highest temp i can get, after playing CS for 2 hours], but consider the potential defected graphic card--8400m GS, I returned this lappy.
It also has a T9300 CPU, which i like it quite much, the highest temp i got from this is around 45.
do mention that I used this dv2700t 5-6 hours everyday before I exchanged it for a dv4t. -
Tomorrow or Monday (or Tuesday), I think I'll probably exchange mine with a dv4t that has the P8600. I have the T9600, but I think I need only a little bit of the processor power that the T9600 provides. Also, the T9600 usually stays at mid 40's degrees C. That means the P8600 will be lower than that.
The fan stops working when the CPU temperature is about 41 degrees Celsius. Then, I think the frequency of fan spinning will be significantly reduced by simply changing to the P8600. That attracts me. Also, if only mine has this serious hard drive overheating issue, then exchanging will solve my problem! Also, that will give back some of my money that I invested in this notebook.
Or, I might keep it and just buy a notebook cooler. I'll decide soon.... -
Good... I don't know why, but it looks like my GPU temperature is higher than that of the 8400M GS. Mine stays at temperatures from 48 to 52 degrees Celsius.
Also, the hard drive of my dv4t is worse than that of your dv2700. The hard drive temperature rapidly increases after I turn on the notebook, and it stays at about 51, 52, or 53 degrees Celsius. -
Not a HP dv4t owner but was going to buy one with its nice design and looks...wish that it would have a slightly better graphic card like 9300M, a better battery life, and a bit lower price....would have been a very good laptop for college.
-
Can any dv4t owner comment on the battery life of a P-series core 2 with a x4500 igp?
-
I wouldn't call it heating issues... really it’s just one guy having his hard drive get a bit warm.
I really enjoy my Dv4t.
The LED screen produces accurate colors. Wireless so far is top notch.
Unlike with other HP's, I do not find myself disabling the touchpad when typing. Typing is easy and I have yet to accidently touch the touchpad.
I haven’t played games... but I did watch 3:10 to Yuma on Blu-ray, with my configuration playback was perfect. -
And what about the graphic card and games?
What kind of game can be run so fluid, with medium/high details?
Have you tested recent games? (Of course I don't expect anything about Crysis, or flight simulator X ^^) -
I am confident that the dv4t will be a great laptop that will last a long time. -
I actually went to CC and took a look at dv4t they had.
It felt not so warm as dv2700t I had on left palm side where hard drive is located, and I guess that dv4t has been turned on for over hours.
the dv4t in CC does not have a Nvidia graphic card though, that might be part of reasons of low temp.
overall, I felt the dv4t is shinning, especially the touch pad was like a mirror.
about the heating issues, I don't feel that dv4t can go as hot as dv2700t.
btw, 8400m GS should have a higher temp than 9200m gs, So I guess thats a good news. -
I haven't tried to convince ANYONE not to buy the dv4t.
I even said 7miles not to cancel his order after reading my posts about the hard drive temperatures because it could be just me. I felt sorry for making him worry too much.
I have been saying that my hard drive gets hot incredibly fast and that I'm disappointed in the hard drive temperatures while I really love the speed and design of this notebook. I love this notebook, and I didn't say that my entire notebook was horrible. I just don't like the hard drive that is overheating. Did I say that I don't enjoy my dv4t at all? No. I haven't said anything about whether I enjoy it or not.
Maybe, I just posted too much about the hard drive issue that I have and made the dv4t look too negative. If that was what you think I did, I really apologize to all of you.
However, even if it is not your problem and it is just mine, don't say "It's just one guy" because (at least to me) it sounds like "He's the only one. Just ignore him". I know that is not what you intended to say, but it sounds like that to me. Also, to me, my hard drive doesn't get "a bit warm". Considering that a normal hard drive, including the one in my old notebook, runs at temperatures from 35 to 45 degrees Celsius, this one runs at about 51 or 52 degrees at idle. I saw it reaching 59 degrees Celsius, which is above the 55-degree C line. I wasn't doing any activity that had to access the hard drive a lot. So, it's not "a bit warm" to me.
Yes, I might be just one unlucky guy who complains too much. But, please don't make me feel bad even if this is just my problem. You could have said that in a better way.
Anyway, I might be just unlucky. So, don't listen to me. I won't post anymore. Thanks. -
I don't think they meant it that way plantearth. Im sure we all appreciate the fact that u brought up this issue because its better that we do identify problems instead of ignore them
-
-
not only u r worried about heat issues PlaneEarth, I think all dv4t owner are concerning this issue. We thank you very much for delivering the information to share with all of us.
I actually find your information quite interesting.
one of my friends own a sony laptop with a hitachi hard drive, and this hitachi was later replaced with a WD, both 250 GB.
according to his experience, He said that hitachi is warmer compare to WD and a Toshiba.
If you find the temp of your hitachi is relatively warmer above normal, I would suggest you to call technical support of HP right away, they hopefully will send you a new hard drive and there also will be a Fedx guy there for picking up the hard drive once you receive the new one.
just another question regarding 9200m GS, anyone has idea about what average temp when 9200m GS on idle? -
whoa, hey i have to say that i appreciate you letting me worry about it,at least i kno what i should be paying attention to when it comes to me,that's wayyyyy better than getting frustrated first hand!in fact we feel sorry for you having such a problem(n that's not bcuz you are UNLUCKY it could've been a common thing that we still dunno),we were talking about it trying to work it out,so that when we have the same problem we will know how to fix it.
there's absolutely no need to apologize,n we are still dying to hear from you with any progress. besides honestly i really wouldnt cancel my order unless im experiencing a problem myself..so dont worry about it. -
Just wondering if anyone can comment on the quality of the LED screen vs the brightview infinity. Worth the extra $$$? Too late for me to back out of the LED now, but I'm still curious to know from people who have already received theirs, while I wait for mine to be delivered.
-
The Apple LED screens are amazing! I need a screen for photo editing while on the road. Was hoping that HP's LED would be the ticket. Anyone seen any details on the NTFS percentages for the LED screen, etc? -
One more request for info on the LED versus regular BrightView versus BrightView Infinity screens.
Also, would love to hear what people are finding for battery life. My existing Dell has always had really weak battery power, and after 5 years, basically lasts about 10 minutes on battery. Dell's response has always been "the battery is not expected to last beyond 1 year." Which is really helpful... -
I have a similar problem with my dell laptop. Three years old, and the battery doesn't actually work at all anymore. It's basically a light desktop, but with really bad performance. Anyways, a friend of mine apparently saw the dv4t's brightview infinity at a best buy a week or two ago, so when my dv4t arrives on monday or tuesday, I'll have him check out the led screen and report on the differences.
-
I really enjoy the led screen on my dv4t.
I'm getting around 3 hours of battery life with Wifi/bluetooth on. -
@ anybody who has their dv4t in hand:
is the smartbay drive hot swappable?i have been considering the extra hard drive but there are times when i do really need the dvd drive and having to turn the computer off, swap, and turn back on is kind of a pain when you need to switch and go immediately
-
Just got my dv4t about an hour ago. 23 hours from now it will be back on a truck and heading to HP. I am not impressed. I'll post more details later, but I have to go to work right now. It's not defective, it just wasn't worth the price. I should've gone with Lenovo/Sager/Asus. Sorry to be another bearer of bad news...
-
alright, on it right now, just to give it a second chance, but eh...
cons:
LED screen has a lot of flex (especially around the HP LED logo on the back of the cover I'm getting a lot of ripples)
screen didn't have the "wow" factor I was expecting, just a pretty nice screen, so not really worth the extra money
hard drive is way too hot. this is the main issue. left palmrest is much too warm for me, my left hand is sweating, and bottom is hotter. ran a test and it's at 51 degrees, so maybe I'm a sissy but I just don't want it that hot. cpu's at 36 degrees. I know I could get a notebook cooler, but this is a new notebook and I'm a non-gamer. I don't think I should have to worry about heat issues until the notebook's at least a year old.
it collects fingerprints a ton, and if your hands are sweaty, they will stick to the palmrests, the touchpad, pretty much everything.
touchpad's a bit small
would prefer that screen resolution were higher--too cramped for my tastes
performance didn't really wow me. been playing with it for an hour now and I've already had it freeze on me while I was browsing the web.
and to top it all off, I was lied to by HP reps TWICE. I asked once if the LED screen had the same 'frameless" appearance as the infinity screen and they told me yes. I didn't believe them, so later talked to another rep and got the same answer. I was pretty clear with the question too. I don't care that much about the frameless look, but it still bugs me that they didn't know/lied.
pros:
pretty good speakers, bass was a little off
fingerprint reader seems pretty good
looks nice
decent laptop overall
I haven't tested battery life yet.
conclusion: not worth the money I paid for it, and I had the student discount and the NB3089 coupon code. I'm still planning on returning it tomorrow. Sorry guys... -
sonoritygenius Goddess of Laptops
oh my mxy..
You just shattered.. everything..
Sony Z, I am back to dreamland...... < < < -
I'm new here and I've been following with all the posts about DV4t. I myself purchased it and the HD is definitely warm. However, based on my previous experiences with IBM Thinkpad, HP DV1040US, Macbook and now DV4t, I say they all heat up and can fry some balls. I doubt that there is a notebook that exists that wont release the heat.
Here is the info for the DV4T using Everest Ultimate Edition:
Temperatures
CPU: 45 C
CPU #1: 41C
CPU Core #2: 40C
GPU: 53C <-- IDLE
WDC: 47C <--- IDLE! When there is an intensive operating it goes from 50C - 55C.
The specifications are P8400 2.2GHz 2gig RAM, 9200M GS nVidia, 250 Hard Drive.
It is specifically warm next to the hard drive.
Anyone thinks there is a better one out there?
P.S. I need it to carry to college so I choose the mobility one. Oh yea, the best part of it, its made in CHINA! -
How is the wireless for everyone else?
-
Hmmm... such a bummer to read a negative review on the dv4t... I've got high hopes and am leaning toward it, but the heat thing sounds rather shady, the sort of product development problem that just isn't acceptable.
-
i got mine today. i haven't run anything intensive on it cause i've been out, but the hdd got up to 49C. it's currently only at 40C though, which isn't bad. my hdd or something does make weird clicking noises, which make me a little nervous. they're real faint though. warmest component now is the GPU and it's only at 44C..
the fans are on all the time. anyone know if that can be changed? and how?
also i'm gonna give vista a few more days, but i think i'll install xp on it and see if it runs any better. i know vista is a lot on the machine.
clayton, my wireless is working fine. but i've also only had it for less than a day..
oh and my specs are: 250g hdd, 2.0GHz processor, 3g ram, nvidia graphics card
also my sister and i played around with the cam for a good 15min or so and that was neat.
all in all this seems to be way better than my old dell inspiron 700m, though it's noisy as heck. gotta figure out how to not have the fans running the whole time.. -
Good news for me. I just got conformation that my dv4t shipped. It was expected to be shipped on 8/19, but at 4:26am today (8/12) I got the e-mail that it was shipped out. Looks like the back log is dying down some.
-
Got mine yesterday (12 Aug) and my estimated build date was the 18th. It shipped out the Friday the 8th. Haven't really had time to mess with it. Brought it along with me to work. But I must say Bluetooth FTW!! No longer do I have to use a usb cord to share my internet connection from my WM6 device. Just taking time to uninstall all the junk software and optimize her right now
for anyone complaining about performance....one way to do so is disable all the fancy vista themes/effects -
Clayton,
in the pics you took your dv4 is tagged with a "Intel Centrino" sticker....i don't recall there being an option for one? Or is it because you selected the Intel brand wireless card also? Mine is baged with Core 2 Duo -
Just got mine 4 hours ago
I tested it right away.
under normal browsing, gpu temp is around 40-43
cpu temp is around 34-41
for teko03
if you chose 802.11/a/g/n, u will get a core 2 sticker
if u chose 5100 wifi, u get a centrino sticker
thats the only difference, cpu is still the same.
my hard drive is 250 WD, which has a temp around 34-37.
Personally, I would think dv4t is much more cooler than dv2700t/dv2700se series.
but, as an exchange, the 9200m GS only scored 3.5 at windows vista index.
8400m GS IS more powerful than 9200m GS, but 9200m GS is smoother, and generate less heat. not to mention the defected part of 8400m GS.
afterall, I am very satisfied about this laptop, the only cons are:
1. touch pad is kind of small
2. touch pad can be sticky to certain people
3. If you are playing games, 9200m GS is not a good choice, but this gpus is really good for watching video. -
i do see what u mean its sticky, unless u have really dry skin lol your gonna get rubbing/friction sometimes...bluetooth or wireless mouse ftw -
my estimated build date was the 22nd, which makes me wonder if maybe mine may have already shipped or will be shipping in the next couple days. Those of you that have gotten it what was your estimated build date, also then what ended up being your build date, and when did it finally ship. I'd appreciate it.
