Looks like a fairly portable yet powerful laptop. HP claims it has 8 hours of battery life, and the battery is removable, so with $50 extra you get an additional battery and double that.

For under $1000 you can get an i7-3612QM and a 2GB GT 650m.

I was originally going to purchase a Sony Vaio S13 but this laptop seems like a better option now. I'll probably place my order in around 2 weeks.

Anyone else interested in this laptop?

 

Put a better screen on it, a thunderbolt port and remove the optical drive and I would buy 10

Seriously it looks a very good laptop, but that screen it's a waste of a very good opportunity for a great laptop. And it only appears so far in the US site

 

I wish it had a backlit keyboard......too bad they removed it in this model
Maybe they will make a DM4-5XXX with better screen and backlit keyboard....

 

I would be very interested if they would put in a higher res screen option. It looks like a nice performing laptop, but I won't buy a 13"+ laptop with a 720p screen.

 

Im very close to purchasing this computer. Does anyone know how to heat issues are on the new HPs? Ive heard horror stories that pavilions love to overheat and with tha tmuch horsepower, I worry about heating issues while gaming.

Engadget has pictures of the white DV4. Looks pretty nice if you ask me. Now all we need is someone to purchase one and let us know if it overheats or not!

 

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I just joined but I looked through the first 20 pages of threads and saw maybe one thread about this (A LOT more on the dv6/7). Any ideas why this is?

I'm waiting for my custom configured laptop to ship from Costco. Unfortunately, I just saw the $250 off coupon for direct from HP. I can still cancel the order but I think the extra ~$150 is worth the Costco customer service and extra year of warranty. Here's what I ordered.

Also, I didn't get the hard drive cache as I am going to add a optical caddy for a SSD. Does anyone know if the optical drive in the dv4t is the same as dv6t? Lastly, is there any benefit of putting the SSD where the original hard drive bay as opposed to putting the SSD in the caddy?

 

I also wanna know just how glossy the display is (how big of an issue is using it in a lit environment such as a campus or classroom)

Man, I really don't want to be the first one to order one of these units in case they are absolute garbage. If there were reviews and they confirmed that the unit did not overheat I would buy one instantly.

If there aren't any reviews soon I might as well order one though.

 

I'm interested in how you're doing this? I was originally thinking of just getting the mSSD, but since SSDs are getting cheaper these days I'm also considering replacing the hard drive with an SSD..

 

the support chip sets have 2 SATA III ports and 4 SATA II ports. I will guarantee the optical bay is wired SATA II. I would "expect" the HD bay would be wired to SATA III ... I am still not clear how the mSATA slot figures into the picture.

 

Considering the SSD is supposed to be used for caching, I would assume that it would be sata3 just like the primary HDD.

This is the machine I should have waited for instead of the x460DX I picked up a few months ago. I could really use the 650m vs the 630m.

 

I'm disappointed to see HP retired the old dv4/dm4 that had a 1600 x 900 screen and backlit keyboard and then introduced this without those upgrade options. The dv4t is a great product, I don't know why they'd water down the optional upgrades to make it a very affordable 14-inch portable notebook with a lot of flexibility. Maybe those options will arrive later, I believe that's what happened with the last generation.

 

I went to Costco today and they had the DV4 in stock, with the HD 4000 graphics. I was very stunned at how thick the laptop was. It is one of the thickest 14" laptops I have seen in the past 5 years. It was the white version, and I didn't quite care for it (black would be much better).

 

How much thicker are we talking? Also, how was the weight/heat?

 

I was debating doing the same thing but many people on here have been using a caddy and replacing the optical drive with a second hard drive bay. Considering I can get a 128gb SSD for $90-110, the mSSD seemed like a waste at $50.

Anyways, my laptop should be shipping this week so in a week or two I'll let everyone know about any heat issues and size. I am coming from a sandy bridge dv4t. I had some terrible issues with HP warranty (without a computer for 1+ month) and Costco let me return it for store credit.

 

I saw this at Costco, and it WAS thick-1.3 inches or so. Also, the primary reason I chose the dv6 over this was the fact that this is plastic whereas the dv6 is metal.

 

It's plastic?? Well.. Not only is it thick but it's also made of poor material? I guess its Vaio time (if only they solve their display problems)

I saw this at Costco also, and i think i am going for lenovo.
On a second note i check out the hp sleekbook envy 4t, seem like the same keyboard with the dv4t. so might be possible to hook up a backlit from an envy 4t model. i was going to buy one from costco to open up and see what possible to upgrade but the plastic kill it for me.

Mine will be here friday. How would you say the build quality is? I am coming from a dm4 so I am a little bummed out. Especially since I just refused shipment and got a refund for the dv6 so I could get the smaller dv4... I wonder if I should go get that dv6 again...

 

Its solid, just plastic, and glossy. Feels about the same as my dv6, just not metal, but there was no flexing on the costoco unit.

 

Mine was just delivered but I'm at work until 5. It's 10AM.... Can't wait to get home. I wonder if it's the exact same dimensions as the dm4. That would be nice if it was possible to switch the casing.

EDIT: Just got home and started transferring files. The screen seems very washed out and the colors are terrible. I'm thinking it is a defective screen. It is an AUO303c

EDIT of EDIT: Seems like the screen has warmed up a little (i guess?) because the colors seem better.

 

How is the temperature?

 

Seems fine to me. I just played Assassin's Creed Revelations for about an hour on full high settings and it didn't seem to get too hot. I used a free program online called "Real Temp" to check the temperature and it said max was 70.

Overall, the computer is a little bit thick, but barely thicker than my sandy bridge dm4. The glossy plastic looks nice but seems like a fingerprint magnet. I wish they would'be used metal.

First Impressions

Build quality is pretty nice. Definitely a fingerprint magnet, but not too bad.

Screen is average, but that is what i expected.

Keyboard feels nice. Everything clicks smoothly. I love the feel of the mouse buttons. My only problem is that the up and down arrow keys are not the normal sized. The are cut in half to fit into one.

Temperture is fairly nice. The entire laptop is very cool while idle and casual use (30C -35C). I played Crysis 2 for a good hour and so far it is not bad. The left bottom corner does get warm, but nothing uncomfortable (~60C). Skyrim on ultra was maxing out at 70C.

Fully charged and on Power Saver mode, it says 8 hrs battery. On regular HP mode, it says 7 hrs.

 

How long did it take for you all to get your laptops?

 

I got mine from Costco and it shipped about ten days later. It was delivered either in two days or next days which was impressive (Fed Ex 3 day). Mine was custom built though.

 

I read in a review that the laptop doesn't feature Optimus. Those kind of battery figures kind of hint that it does. Does it?

 

I'm not sure how to check, but I was also curious and just typed in "optimus" in the start search and nothing came up.

 

It's Nvidia's power saving feature - when non-graphically demanding applications are in use, Optimus switches the graphics over to Intel's integrated chip - thus saving power.

I've never used a laptop with it so I'm not sure exactly how to check. I'd just go to the desktop with no applications open, then go to the Nvidia/graphics card control panel and see which chip is running.

I'd be surprised if it isn't there with battery life in the 7-8 hour range. But then I did read Optimus wasn't active in this laptop...

 

I know what optimus is I just wasn't sure how to check. I'll delve deeper when I get home from work.

I am pretty sure it does not have Optimus.

If you just browse the internet you should easily get 7 hours on Power Saver mode.
I believe it might have to do with the 650m being more energy efficient.

If you are playing a heavy game like Crysis, then you'll get about 2 hours.

 

Good to hear. I ordered mine on the 13th. They estimated that it wouldn't arrive until the 2nd week of August so I am glad to hear you got yours a lot sooner than they estimate. Eagerly waiting for this laptop.

 

My Dv6 shipped a good week and a half early. It should ship sooner than expected(That makes them look better, more effecient)

 

would anyone/ could anyone please post some pics of this machine? specifically a side shot and a couple showing the glossyness? I am on the edge about this machine, and am just worried its too thick or too glossy...

Is the battery really that good? i know windows/hp battery meters can be decieving... cna you get 5+hrs with web 50%brightness?

anyone know where i can find a review of this unit? with its pretty epic specs and price i cant believe there isn't one...

7 hours battery on dedicated graphics (however efficient they may be) seems on the high side even with power saver. My current 1.3Ghz ultra-low-voltage laptop with no dedicated graphics (Acer 4810tz) can just get 7 hours out with the brightness right down, power saver on and some light web browsing.

 

It definitely has Optimus.

It looks well very glossy.... Which is sorta sad day, but from ringos pics it shure looks nice, I also had hoped it would taper more... But cant have everything perfect... Do you think I could get the replacement palm rest for the dv4 beats and swap it out?

No. If you look at pictures of the dm4 beats, it has a different layout. If you notice it doesn't have speakers on top of the keyboard.

I've noticed my headphone jack is a little iffy sometimes.
After a few hours it stops working, but it works after i restart it.

 

h,, i thought they had a dv4t 5xxx revision beats edition, must not have been looking closely...
