It does have Beats Audio, but I'm not sure exactly what it does.
Not significantly different, but the speakers are loud.
The tiny red button on the top of the keyboard is the Beats Audio emblem.

I just got this today. I plan to post video of it on YouTube by end of day tomorrow and will also provide some pictures. Anyway, check this thread later tomorrow and I should have more!
-
Yeah any sort of review would be most appreaceated... now matter what kind it is...
just looking for more info on batterylife With/without dedicated graphics (which gpu too)
Heat/fan noises under load, ease to carry around (is the thickness a prob?)
and of course any additional pictures are welcome
even though the ones posted earlier are extremely good.
what kind of ship/build times to expect... on the fence about waiting for another epic deal on dv6 or just get this and free xbox (to be turned into walmart or sold for $$) -
I just wanted to verify that this unit DOES have optimus. I just did a clean install on a new SSD and in the SWSETUP a found optimus files. I installed that driver and it said "Optimus installed"
-
Here you go, offering up a video, pictures and first thoughts in a separate thread:

Sorry, I get lost in owners lounges so prefer to break this out in a separate thread and I'll keep track of any questions there. Only had it a day so will have more thoughts in the coming days as I test it out more. -
I should hopefully receive my dv4t tomorrow. I'm glad it shipped well ahead of their estimate.
Is it possible to take out the DVD drive and replace it with a secondary hard drive? I know it is possible with a lot of different laptops but haven't heard anything about it with the dv4t. -
Just ordered all the parts off amazon. The SSD came earlier than the caddy so I have the SSD already installed and running. I did have to download a clean windows 7 because the recovery discs wouldn't work. I'll let you know how the caddy works when I get it. Should be here around Monday.
-
Which caddy did you get?
-
My laptop didn't take too well to swapping out the memory. Tried to put in 2 x 4 GB 1333 MHz memory sticks that I had but was getting BSOD every few hours. I put back in the single original 4 GB 1600 MHz stick and she runs just fine.
I heard that some laptops with Ivy Bridge have problems with slower than 1600 MHz RAM sticks and I'm guessing this is one of them, unless anyone has done it successfully? Seems like its time to buy new RAM. -
Do you know what the stock 4gb ram's speed and time is?
Looking to add another 4gb -
Just a generic one off of amazon for about $15. I'll post which parts I got when they all come in and I know they work.
-
Got everything today and put it all together. The caddy was a generic one but seemed to be built well. The external DVD case seemed very poorly made but went together easily and works fine. I got an OCZ agility 4 drive. I got all of this off of amazon for around ~$120.
Caddy (I would look for an amazon prime vendor!):
Amazon.com: NEW SATA 2nd HDD caddy for 12.7mm Universal CD/DVD-ROM: Computers & Accessories
128GB Agility 4:
Amazon.com: OCZ Technology Agility 4 128 G SATA 6Gb/s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive with 72K Random 4K Write IOPS and Max 400MB/s Read (AGT4-25SAT3-128G): Computers & Accessories
DVD enclosure:
Amazon.com: USB2.0 Slim DVD / CD RW Burner External Enclosure Caddy Case with SATA Connetor For all Laptop Notebook dvd cd burner[ Case only!! Drive is not included !!]: Electronics
All in all I'm happy. The solid state drive is ridiculously fast! -
750+tax for i7 + 650m with coupon NBY8552
Pretty crazy except for the sub-par screen.
Any one check if new cable needed for 900p screen? -
I just found out about this laptop. Agree that it has great specs except for the screen.
I don't put much confidence in HP laptops based on one I owned from a couple of years ago, but I'm curious to see how reviews pan out for the dv4t-5100. -
Mine should be in Thursday!
-
Mine too. What specs you chose? I threw ivy bridge core i7 3612QM, GT650M 2GB GDDR5 into it, and selected 500GB 7200rpm HDD, wifi with bluetooth. To get better performance, I gonna put samsung PM 830 256GB SSD, Kingston Hyper X PnP 2x4GB DDR3 1600 RAM, and the yeah, i get my new weapon for games and intensive tasks.
-
Exact same machine. With same planned upgrades except I am unsure of what ssd to get.. Well, and probably different ram but same amount. What are those setting you back?
-
I want to buy this laptop sooo much! Wish they would bring the 30% coupon back
It's probably impossible to find another i7/gaming laptop/14" laptop around $800 like this one was.. -
Yeah shane it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Couldnt have been happier. Well, i guess it could have been a 900p screen. Oh well!
-
Could I replace the screen with a 1600x900 matte screen? Is it available? I googled and did not see anything.
Thanks -
If anyone has bluetooth, can you please check the model number under your device manager so i can order it
-
I'm about to purchase the DV4T 5100 (i7Q, 650m) with the 4GB DDR3 RAM.
I was chatting with a sales representative at HP website about the RAM speed and she told me that it is only 1333 mhz.
Does the DV4T 5100 supports 1600 mhz RAM? I'm planning to buy an additional 8GB RAM so eventually i'll end up with 12GB. -
Here's a question. Does the touchpad on this unit allow for you to tap the pad to register a left click, or do you have to use the buttons?
-
Yes, pretty standard for synaptics software that has been around forever.
-
Thanks. For kansas and others familiar with the dv4t, what issues have you had with it if any at all? It seems most of the newer models of most laptops have build quality issues, quality control issues. But this is a refresh of an older model and I think that may mean they've ironed out a lot of the kinks.
-
Click buttons are noisy and a bit stiff. Some cheaper Lenovos have softer click buttons. Touch pad placement not aligned with space bar. Power pin is not right angle. Could be issues or not depending on the user.
-
And the touchpad is overall too small. I have a apple MBA and the two finger scroll works flawless but the dv4t has little less responsive with two finger scroll and the touchpad is too skinny to even scroll correctly anyways. I wish I could add my MBA touchpad to the dv4t. xD
-
Another thing is the power button. It is not round but a thin 3/4 inch bar which is recessed. Will prevent accidental pressing but also hard to press when needed. Also the up/down arrow keys are small and placed super close. Easy to press both while trying to press one. No backlit keyboard option either which would have been nice like the 3170se.
Another con: Screen doesn't tilt back really beyound the 90 degree. Kinda hard to place it on a adjustable laptop holder on a table and be usable.
This system with the 30% discount coupons are good value.(all ports, optical drive etc . Also HP has good return policy and reasonable cust.service. Without a 30% discount I will go for a Sony 13.3 inch unit. If only they added some finesse it would have been great value. Change the power pin to right angle, Reduce the weight to 4.2 to 4.5 lbs (mine weighs 5 lbs) at least like the dm4-3170se, option for matte screen and higher res, fix the touch pad placement and ergonomics (the cheap Lenovo i tried is silky smooth. Doesn't hurt the thumbs at all and barely any noise) etc.
Looks like the proven basics are overlooked for gloss and shine. I was going to return this for a ASUS S46CM (similar dimensions, 4.2 lbs, aluminum body) but that is not available till may be November. -
Mine says Intel Centrino Wireless Bluetooth(R) 4.0+ High Speed Adapter
Not sure if that is gonna' help
-
Its A4B73AV Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 since it looks like the WLAN and Bluetooth are combined. I just looked at my receipt for my notebook and double checked it in hp parts.
-
BTW, to get to BIOS is F10. I had to change the funciton key settings so I don't have to press FN+F5 to refresh. Also helps accidentally pressing F12 which will toggle Wi-Fi. Now I have to FN+F12 to toggle Wifi. Also serial number sticker is in the battery compartment. Not sure if that has been the norm since I haven't bought a new system in a while
-
Is the mSATA cache located under the back lid next to the WiFI, basically meaning the laptop does not need to be stripped to get at it?
Also, has anyone found the service manual this model yet? -
to missionhcky09:I really want to get a caddy like this. How does it look on the side (does it match the rest of the laptop?). I found this one ( The HP Pavilion DV4 Series MultiBay: Weight Saver, Optical ... - HP Support Forum) but when I look at HP PartSurfer the dv4t-5xxx doesn't show up, so I'm nervous it won't work.
Also, 2 other questions for everyone - 1) how can you turn off bluetooth? 2) I got the 32gb mssd accelerated cache - is that actually a second drive that I could see if I opened things up, or that would show up in Computer Management? Can I access it directly, or does it simply act like a cache (as in the name) that is a slave to my current hard drive.
So far, I'm liking what I see with the laptop. I wanted to be able to run big MATLAB scripts and optimizations using ABAQUS. I'm coming from a netbook so this is a BIG upgrade. Occasionally though, I feel the space bar doesn't respond when I tap it, but i'm sure I'll adjust. -
Returned my system. Didn't like the overall gloss. Got a cheap samsung 3 series. 5.1 lb. I think HP Probook or Thinkpad is my cup of tea when I really want to get a speced out system. This is a great system for the money. Wish it was not this glossy especially the screen and the bezel.
HP manual talks about a HP Connection Manager app to manage bluetooth.
Good luck -
Man this is one dead and slow sticky thread.
No service manual yet?
Anyone opened up the bottom cover, and can you see the mSATA SSD if you got one?
How many people actually have this laptop? -
I have opened up the bottom and identified the RAM, optical drive, and HD, but I don't know where the mSATA SSD is (and yes I do have one). I believe it is just a chip, and it could be located with the RAM. I pulled out the HD and didn't see anything, nor anything that was near by it, but I also don't really know what the mSATA looks like.
I've owned the laptop for about a week now, and I have been generally pleased. Like others have said, I would have liked a backlit keyboard, and I think the metal bodies look nice, but those things don't really have anything to do with the performance. I agree on the unfortunately slow thread - any other opinions on this machine?
-
Re:mSata: Should be similar to the one in this link
Removing and Replacing the mSATA Drive - HP Customer Care (United States - English) -
Awesome find, this is exactly what I wanted to know. I have this slot empty.
This means I can go buy a 64GB mSATA drive and throw it in there.
Think I will move my OS to the drive
-
I'm not sure you can actually "see" the mSATA. It doesn't show up any where that I can see (computer management, my computer, even BIOS). My understanding is it only acts as an "accelerated cache", and only the OS can use it as a buffer not an actual drive.
-
You have to use the hp Connection Manager to turn off the Bluetooth.

Hi, I just updated to the latest bios for this notebook, and the wireless card stopped detecting any wifi networks. Anyone else with the same problem? Is it possible to downgrade to an older bios?
Nvm, I didn't hit the wireless hotkey to re-enable wifi. Everything is working fine. -

Hi, I'm currently considering the dv4-5220us as my new laptop. how is the battery life on these on average?
-
I have flashed to this.
I noticed the flash took longer than normal compared the dv6 models.
After this was done in windows flashing, it then went through several reboots.
First one showed at the UEFI/BIOS level updating "boot flash".
Then it powered up and shutdown a couple of time with a blank screen.
Once it started with a screen, it stopped at the UEFI/BIOS level once again, and came up with a message "operating system boot mode change (021)". From here you could either press escape to contiune and ignore the message, or put in a code to update the OS boot loader so it said on the screen. I choose to update with the supplied code on screen.
Everything booted normally in to Windows 7. It detected two new devices, Standard PS/2 Keyboard and ACPI Thermal Zone.
Also I noticed in the boot menu if pressing F9, there are now 2 new options each for hard drive and the optical drive. These are labeled with UEFI.
Once in the UEFI/BIOS there are two new options available, there are under system configuration "Card Reader / 1394 Power Saving" and "USB3.0 Configuration in Pre-OS". The last option allows you to swtich the USB3 ports to either USB3 or USB2 when the machine is powered on, and before the OS has started.
The boot options menu is now extensive (for a HP machine anyway), compared to what you would normally see under system configuration.
Basically there was a lot to notice with the actual BIOS flash procedure, and extras in the BIOS itself. I am yet to see if I notice any major changes in Windows itself. -
The folk? The revision of dv4t-5200 (ENVY) no longer offer 650m? HP probably can't get the cooling right when everyone else is able to do it.....
-
I have one with 650M. Mine overheats constantly. Most games are unplayable now. Works for 30 mins then dies. Its awful and I have no real alternative options.
