I would do AVG for AV. Its free, does a great job and updates just like the pay for use ones. I have alwasy felt that Norton apps are memory hogs.

Question on the screen for people who have received their system... I went to BestBuy to check out a floor model. It had the infiniti screen and it looked pretty dim compared to the other notebooks that were out. I tried turning up the brightness with the functionbuttons and it looks to be as bright as it would go. Anyone have an issue with the brightness?

Also, the display hinges were pretty weak I noiced. Again this was a demo, so I'm not sure if the people who have received their systems yet can comment on this. There seemed to be a fair amount of play in the hinges.

Your gonna go with the P8600? Saw a few times in this thread better off going with the P8400, pretty much same performance for $50 less.

Hey there everyone, I'm new to the HP forum and would like some thoughts on my pre-configed dv5t - should be receiving it tomorrow.

Here's the config (It's not from online so excuse any typos )
HP Pavilion Entertainment dv5t Notebook PC

    – Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    – Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P7350 (2.0 GHz)
    – 15.4" diagonal WXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1280 x 800)
    – 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    – 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    – HP Imprint Finish (Mesh)+Microphone + Webcam + Fingerprint Reader for HP BrightView Infinity Display
    – Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
    – No High speed 56K modem port
    – 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    – LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
    – TV Tuner w/remote control
    – 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    – Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    – HP Color Matching Keyboard

I just need a some confirmation that with this CPU I'd be able to play current games without having any problems - I've read a lot about CPUs these days not being the bottlenecks so I'm hoping that holds true in this case.
I also read that choosing a slower (?) CPU would allow for better battery life, correct ?

I am excited to get my hands on my first laptop tomorrow :D

Ps. I wish I could upgrade the resolution but it's pre-configed :( - I need to read more to see the good/bad of the Infinity display
Pss. I have read about the laptop heating a little and raising the back by one ½ inch helps (Thanks for that Chaz :))

Another good AV choice is ESET NOD32. It's not free but they do offer a 30 day trial. I also use AVG which is free.

Yay, I got my dv5t today. It looks perfect and runs flawlessly. I want to do a clean install because of all the crap on the computer, but is it truly necessary to do it? What advantage besides some more points on 3dMark does it give? And, I have to register my warranty + ADP service thing - will doing a clean install mess with the activation process? (The HP Total Care thing is pretty cool imho)

Also, sorry I didn't see this the first time around...have you considered the dv5z for her? If on a budget, it starts at a much lower price than the dv5t. I'm sure you could get a decent setup for about $900 with one of those =). If not, the dv6700t is still a solid choice, especially with some of the rebates I saw a couple weeks ago...you should check to see if those are still up, hundreds of dollars off and all that.

Chaz which one did you get?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I call HP tech support and request a Vista Home Premium disk they'll send me one free of charge right? I'm having trouble finding a place to download the necessary files to create a vista install disk for a clean install. my CPU score was around 400 marks lower than others who tested their dv5ts on the same specs. I'm assuming it mostly has to do with all the crap hp has on here.

Unfortunately no, HP doesnt ship OS discs. What they ship will be the restore DVD's which you can burn yourself.

just go to your local store that sells computers you can pick up a vista disk for like a little over $100.00, if you cant find one there www.tigerdirect.com and newegg are great sites to get them.

TimBeConfused, you getting 400 points less because of your screen resolution, they where saying farther back in this thread that 3dbenchmark06 standard resolution that it tests at is higher than 1200x800. you have to change the testing resolution in the program

I dont quite think that is the solution I'm looking for seeing as I already have a Vista product key with my new laptop. I just want a clean vista disc so I dont have a ton of hp installed programs that I don't want. Thanks though.

    Im really pissed right now.

I had a dv6000 that i bought right when this new model was introduced, but the dvd drive was a bit messed up, so i decided to return for this new model.

I get it today, and 5 minutes into setup, the screen goes blank and the machine goes idle. It now does the same thing everytime i reboot it.

Im really unhappy with hp right now. The dv5t is the best value for the money right now, but maybe i should look elsewhere.

Looks like an excellent config . . . go for it.
Not necessary, but worthwhile in my opinion. The Windows install is a lot . . . well, cleaner with the clean install. It's a bit more responsive and you can start fresh. It takes a few hours, but is worth it in the end.
Norton = garbage. Get ESET NOD32 Antivirus, I second the below:
Norton is garbage because it's bloated, and requires too much attention. It tries to baby you. ESET NOD32 is extremely streamlined, hardly taps into resources at all (unlike Norton), and offers excellent protection against viruses.

    ====================================

Well, this is very interesting... I'm on the verge of ordering the dv5t with the P8400 (P because of the 25 watt "low power consumption" processor, and because the 8400 is not as hot as 9500) and now, i'm concerned!!

Granted, your high end graphics card 9600 would generate more heat, but i do not know what processor you got. Please tell us so we all learn and benefit from this. thx.

as i will NOT game with this laptop, i'll only be using it to web surf for news-related sites like Bloomberg and CNN and the like, i do not expect the need for a separate graphics card, so i'd suspect the on board graphics will reduce heat by a significant amount. Plus, if i choose one of the lower end P processors, i.e. the P8400 (i somehow do NOT feel comfortable choosing the P7350 which is oddly absent from Intel's site and most information sources, just seems weird to me, though it is still a 25 watt-er!).

Have you thought of researching on a laptop cooler, i.e. the CoolerMaster or similar?

    thx in advance!

Man this thread is getting big...I leave for a day and it exploded.

Check out post 244 - this got Chaz's computer temps down by about 10 degrees. If that does not work for you, others on this thread got the Zalman NC 1000 and that seems to work quite well.

Dual, the laptop should only get noticably warm while doing intensive tasks such as gaming; you will be fine.

What Wujohn said about the dv5t is correct . . . all you have to do is lift the back up to give the machine a bit of extra ventilation, and the temperatures drop significantly. It's only necessary to do that while you game. A cooling pad would really help too.

I think one thing you have to keep in mind is that the dv5t is a relatively thin and light 15.4" laptop . . . put in a powerful video card, and it's going to warm up. It's not dangerous, it's just the way it is.

My Sager has been running warmer than my dv5t for nearly three years with no problems.

    ======================================

Good advice, all of you gents/ladies.

btw, as i intend to do lots of reading of news reporting sites (i.e. Bloomberg, CNN, BBC, etc) with this laptop and it's the primary intend, though it will be a general purpose laptop, i do NOT intend to get a separate graphics card, but rather, just do the "on board graphics solution".

that said, this should even FURTHER reduce the heat generated, right Chaz, et al?

oh, i intend to do the P8400 (concerned about the P7350 being so "not talked about" by intel so i thought that i'd go to one grade above entry level 25 watter P series processor), on board graphics, 2 or 3 gb, Infinity screen (check it out at BestBuy today). this should be one of the least warm dv5t possible, right?

    =======================================

thx Wujohn re: the Zalman NC 1000 cooler.

i looked at it and thought that it is more ideal for a desk surface use rather than a lap/thigh use as the air intake is from the bottom.

Others have pointed to the Cooler Master cooler as it does NOT have any holes/intake at the bottom!! please see:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=162820&page=8

btw, i looked on newegg and found over 60 in this laptop cooling category! please have a look - i think out of so many, we'll find something that would work for us! ; )

Has anyone ever used or seen this laptop "cooler":

    http://www.xpad4laptop.com/index.html

Apparently, this just lifts it a half inch or so, enough for airflow. Spec page says where the rubber feet should be on the bottom of the lappy. Can someone measure this out for me so I can see if it will fit?

Amazon.com has some good reviews of this product, and cost is about $25.

    =====================================

5strings: thx for this!! this is, so far, my favorite! despite newegg having over 60 to choose from, this passive device seems to be the simplest and causes the least amount of damage to the laptop!! (i.e. no damage to the usb port, etc)

as per Chaz below, he said that just a bit of extra space below the dv5t would be sufficient for cooling this particular model of laptop, especially since i'm not a gamer, will only do reading of websites typically, and will buy the dv5t with the P8400 25 watt low wattage processor.

    thx 5strings!

No problem. Again, I'd check the specs (i.e. size - seems to be about a half inch narrower than the dv5t, but shouldn't be a problem.) before jumping on this one, as well as the Amazon reviews.

can anyone with the dv5t 1680x1050 resolution screens and 9600gt reflect on World of Warcraft performance? Aka. Can you max out the graphics settings? How is the FPS in Shatt? Out in some random area, perhaps Hellfire or something?

I've been gaming on my desktop with an 8800GTX so I dont wanna downgrade TOO much, but I still wanna be able to play WoW on the road. Seriously considering getting a dv5t, but the graphics performance for the only game I play is holding me back. :D

    Thanks for the help.

    COSTCO.com customization on the dv5t w/P8400:

may i ask if anyone has any experience or thoughts on Costco.com's HP customization pricing/service? from what little i could tell, i did the configuration and it's the same roughly $1,039 price that i got from HP.com directly (w/free shipping but not including tax). HOWEVER, costco.com seems to have a 90-day return policy. that could be worth something IF something turns out to be really wrong or bad about the particular dv5t that i order or if i really end up hating it (extremely unlikely as i've seen them at both circuitcity as well as bestbuy and really like the over all look and feel (btw, i'm accustomed to my IBM T40p's look and feel and really like it as well - enjoy the simple, matte black good looks of the T40p).

look forward to hearing from you all.

oh, btw, the shipping date is supposed to be August 14th, if i had gone through with the order.

    thx!

I'm also interested as to how much this will effect temperatures. Although I already purchased and received a zalman nc1000, the reviews seem like this new cooler is pretty effective. So basically it just cools by lifting up the base of the notebook and improving airflow, right? I'm assuming that a more traditional notebook cooler with fans will probably cool more, but maybe not...I guess we'll have to wait for someone to buy it and compare =).

Dualmonitors: What do you mean by damage usb ports? I've only owned 2 coolers now, but have never had one damage a usb port for me. Is this a common issue among notebook coolers?

This is not very comforting news :(
First off I hardly see anyone on here getting the P7350 and even I noticed it's not showing on Intel's website. Mine's a preconfiged dv5t (I live in India) so couldn't change that.
Will having only a 2GHz CPU affect FPS gaming much ? Or only multi-tasking ?

Hello all, here is another update. The T9600 with Nvidia 9600 burns through the high capacity battery in two hours, just doing basic web surfing. Also there is a fan setting in the bios "always on" that can be disabled. With this setting disabled and the laptop running on battery power, the fan hardly ever turns on. However, when recharging the battery, the fan runs continuously. Not sure if that makes sense, but I am too tired to rewrite :) The P8600 order is delayed, so no comparison anytime soon. I still like the infinity display and when comparing to my old dv6500, I dont see it being any more reflective. Brightness seems about the same too. Ok, need sleep. Take care all.

    Hello,

I hope I posted this in the right location. Anyways I recently purchased a DV5T and am wanting a TV Tuner for it (I did not get the internal TV Tuner because I was told it only picks up waves and that I could not attach it to my cable box to get the channels I want). So I am hoping someone can help me find the best TV tuner for what I want to do. I posted the details in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=281945

And here are my DV5T specifications that I am really happy with (I have not received the DV5T yet, but I am confident in my decisions so far but this TV Tuner is really stressing me out!):

Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)
    15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1680 x 1050)
    4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
HP Imprint Finish (Mesh)+Microphone + Webcam + Fingerprint Reader for HP BrightView Infinity Display
    HP Color Matching Keyboard
    802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth
No High speed 56K modem port
LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
    No TV Tuner w/remote control
High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Thank! And hopefully I haven't done anything against the etiquette around here.

    -AndrewCK

Costco also gives you a 2 year warranty. Factor that in and you save at least $150. My was cheaper from Costco.
