Is the TV tuner worth it?
Great deal on the RAM, Chaz. I'll take your advice and get it.
Man, I'm on the fence on adding Blu-ray. I just can't decide if it's worth it. I do love movies though.

What games are playable at 1680 x 1050 res. with at least med. settings (not including steam games).

-If you're referring to 3DMark06 scores, we debunked that myth when we realized that those getting higher scores were running on lower resolutions
-IMO . . . faster processors aren't worth it. You're not going to notice a difference between a P8400 and a T9400 in most applications
-I am running on 2GB . . . performance is quite snappy. What programs are you going to be running with this notebook? How much RAM do you use right now running those programs? -
ok, i have just a couple of questions i did order this notebook and it gets built the 8th.
my question is what motherboard does it use, and if the motherboard has a Intel integrated already in it. Cause what i have heard is this should support you to switch between the nvidia and Intel graphic cards for better battery life -

Right.... I just picked up my DV5-1007tx (I ended up going for the 2.5Ghz)
Intel Core 2 Duo (Centrino 2) T9400 2.53ghz
4Gb Ram
nVidia 9600mGT 512Mb
320Gb HDD
Native LCD 1280x800.... ( I forgot you USA guys can order higher res LCD's.... perhaps 3dMark06 scores should also reference the native res)
3dMark06 = 4552!!! Brilliant... @1280x800
This Resolution for me is perfect... not too small to read on a 15.4" and fine enough to run Native res at good frame rates in pretty much all games... I'll be doing some game bench marks over the course of today and tomorrow (given the rate people post on this thread that'll be 5-6 pages from now lol!!!).
I'm currently burning my restore dvd's... which has so far taken nearly 1 1/2hrs ?

woops! please disregard my other post. seems yall found the difference in 3dmark06 scores. I opted for the 1400x900 resolution on my computer. any way of telling what resolution im am running in 3dmark06 so i can compare results with yalls? right now im getting 4530 but im not sure what resolution that is at...
also any chance of crysis benchmarks?? i have been playing with everything on high except shaders, shadows, and objects on medium. it seems to play alright but i dont know the FPS because i dont know how to display in-game FPS. With my dv7t and the T9400 and 9600M GT and 4 GB RAM all on the 64-bit system i plan on playing orange box, crysis, unreal tournament 3, oblivion, battlefield 2, and possibly call of duty 4 if i feel i need to get it -
-
Touchdown... the res is on the Main 3dMark06 screen in the Setting column.
Also it's in the results online page by clicking on "View more" at the end of your system specs on the ORB page.
Here's my 3dr score with all my settings and can be uploaded to Orb for viewing by right clicking on the 3dMark Logo on the main display of 3dMark06 and selecting upload from saved file.

Is it tax free weekend this weekend??? The HP site doesn't reflect this. I'm in Texas, btw.
-
does the remote (the one that comes default in xpress card slot) in this computer is like the last series of hp with removable battery or it charges in the xpress card slot?
-
Does everything look sharp and clear on the screen too? I dont wanna regret not getting the 1680 x 1050 res gaming wise. I dont care about putting windows side by side. Thanks for your input
Oh yeah and let me know how crysis runs on your lappy I have like the exact same specs. Post the detail settings, res., and fps.
Thanks man.
Steve -
Yes, it states that certain states are tax exempt on the checkout page.
I decided I'm going for 32 bit Vista. Only benefit of 64 bit vista for me is the availability of 4 gigs but 3 gigs should be enough. Bad part is I'm paying too much for HP's ****ty 3 gigs but whatever.
I'm also going with 8600 instead of 9400 because its not significantly slower and it generates less heat.
Am I being accurate? -
-
1280 is just brilliant. At work if I need extra desktop space, I just plug in the monitor which is sitting right there. No big deal. For games, 1280 is a high enough res that with a little 2x AA, there's no jaggies to worry of and enough native 3D performance to give good game play.
My other gaming rig with it's 8800GT, even at 1680x1050... needs all that 11,000 3dMark power to run crysis at that res.... Putting a 1680x1050 in a laptop is a little overkill given that the native res out strips the 9600GT's ability to run that high with decent fps.... and I hate running non native in games... makes my eyes feel blurry
If business is your primary use for this laptop then i reckon the higher res would be preferable.... if gaming is your primary use... I'd recommend the standard 1280 would be ideal.

Thanks Ramjet you made me fell so much better about my decision.

1. Should I downgrade the processor?
2. Should I upgrade to the infinity display? Is the picture enhaced in any way or is the infinity display purely aesthetics.
3. I assume the video card should be good enough for blu-ray
4. How do you stack the 5% discount on the APP discount. What is the discount code you all are using. When I stack the code NB3089 It wont allow me to stack it.
Any other changes?
BTW this will be my first laptop. I've been following threads on this sight for the last month or so for about 2hrs a day. -
I've decided I'm going to take the blu-ray plunge.
I too would like to know if anybody here has had good success with the integrated tv tuner? -
-
Soarski, that's a great setup. It's pretty much what I'm considering with the exception of the 9600M GT card. I think you'll be fine with the 9200M and blu-ray. I'm trying to hold out until Labor Day weekend when these laptops may go on sale. maybe....
-
2)The Infinity Display is purely an aesthetic thing; can you go look at Best Buy to compare? That'd be the best way to decide which you like better.
3) Yes it is more than good enough
4) No idea... -
Placed the order.
Went with 32 bit, 2.4 ghz, 3 gigs, 9600 gt

PULLED THE TRIGGER!
Went with everything as described but added infinity display, downgraded from 3 to 2 gigs ram will add more later, dropped the MS office.

I think I did OK

1. okay, got my dv5t early... yay HP. it's amazing, the keyboard (feels so good and idk why) is awesome, and the 9600m GT is sooooo surprisingly powerful. i can run everything i throw at it on high settings (COD4, BF2, and world in conflict (very high ran slow, but high is fine.) one thing i do wonder.... after gaming for about 10 mins, the fans crank up, is that okay? they really go, my old dv9000 cranked the fans up too, but the dv5t feels hot, and then the fans go off, so i wonder if everything is okay... i dont want to fry my new amazing dv5t.
2. also, does the dv5t with the 9600m gt have the hybrid SLI? not sure how it works, but i know what it does. it it automatic, or is it a setting i can adjust/change.
3. also battery life, i'm getting 1.5 to barely 2 hours on power saver mode, what is every1 else getting on the standard 6 cell? -
1. they are suggesting that you raise up the notebook back end just a little to fix the heat issue
2. the only way you can find that out is if someone knows what the motherboard is and if it has a integrated Intel graphic card with the nvidia, and you have to enable it
3. i don't know mine didn't come in yet -
I finally had a chance to play around with the dv5t today. Its out on retail here in Australia. I was quite impressed at the build and sleek design.
Im contemplating on getting one. Its pre-configured for $2000 or $1400 for the lower end model. -
Would the 9600GT be powerful enough to run Starcraft 2 and Guild wars 2 when they come out? Because im contemplating selling my dv5z to my dad and getting the dv5t with the P8400 and 9600M GT in it. I thought i would just use my laptop for school stuff but im finding i really like it more than my desktop and those games would be the only ones i really want to play when they come out.
-
BTW just finished a game of Starcraft Brood Wars -
Blizzard games (SC2) are notoriously easy to run. The 9600gt will be plenty good. As for guild wars, i can't say because I know nothing about it other than it is an MMORPG but you should be able to run most future games on at least medium

has anyone used a bluetooth mouse with a bluetooth enabled dv5t?

Hi folks:
i know that people have discussed the Infinity option here and there, but i have not yet seen a pros and cons of the various aspects of why the Infinity BrightView option is better or worse than the regular BrightView option.
may i kindly ask if the good folks here might opine about this please?
thx in advance! -
Hello, I would like some recommendations, Ive been building my dv5t on the web since it was released, waiting so I could gather enough money, and I've checked with the 512MB 9600M GT, but I've been wondering last days if it would be good to downgrade to 256MB 92000M GS. Im a Graphic Designer, I barely game, maybe instal a random decent game one day, but not Crysis like games. But I run a lot of apps, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, etc. and I'd like a good Rendering for Future 3D works with probably 3D Studio or Maya or Inventor.
I'm not that good with videocards, so maybe the 9200 is enough for what I'll be doing, or should go with 9600, as I'm trying to make my notebook better so I dont have to upgrade it later?
Last question, with the tasks I just mentioned, will it be heating up much with the 9600?
Thanks in advance!

Does anyone with the laptop know if an install of vista is already on the system? An install I could burn to a DVD. I'm looking to perhaps do a clean install, but I'll check out the benchmarks without a clean install first.
This is my first laptop and my first attempt at a clean install, so please pardon my ignorance. -
sonoritygenius Goddess of Laptops
@Undress: Go with the 9600M GT because of your 3D + rendering needs and be future-proof
@Tim: It comes preinstalled with Vista but ALOT of HP bloatware is expected to be on it: HP Total Advisor, HP Computer Connections, etc etc etc
A recovery partision used to be with HP I dont know how they do it in new models now.. but a Recovery Disk should come nevertheless -

Pros:
-It gives the dv5t a really sleek look
Cons:
-Even more reflective than a standard glossy screen
I think it makes the display look clearer, but I can't verify this. All I know is that my WSXGA+ Infinity display is probably the clearest display I have ever seen . . . you can't even see the pixel grid. I love this screen.
I'm going to merge your thread with the dv5t Owner's Lounge so this forum doesn't get too crowded with dv5t questions . . . -
The recovery dvd is also taking a long time for me. Did it sit at 100% for awhile on you guys or am I going to have to restart?
Chaz: I am aware of the guide and will be using it. However first I need to burn Vista to a DVD in order to do the install. Does the Dv5t come with an image of the Vista disk or am I out of luck and I'll have to go buy a disk? -
will this be a problem in order of compatibility or i wont have to worry about it? -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I was unable to find the Vista disc on the hard drive . . . so you will have to borrow a Vista disc from someone or download the files and burn them (instructions in the clean install guide). Alternatively you can buy one as you noted. I have a retail copy of Vista Business, so I just used that. -
-
I'm so excited! My DV5T just shipped today, that's 7 days earlier than HP's estimated ship date!
-
Well I sent this to Chaz as a PM cause I didn't want to get lost in this big thread, but what the hell, ill just post it in here aswell. More the feedback the better I suppose.
=======================
I am looking for a notebook for everyday need (email, music, internet etc etc) plus some gaming here and there.
I already know I am going to stick with the 2GB of RAM (will upgrade through newegg if I feel the need too) and I am going to get the 9600M GT GPU. I am also going to go with the WSXGA+ (Not with Infinity)
As far as a CPU goes, I saw that you said going to the T is not worth the extra cash, so should I go with the P8400 or P8600? Is the P86 worth the extra $50, or not at all?
As for everything else I am going to stick with the Free Upgrade for the Hard Drive and the WiFi. I am also going to go with the High Capacity Battery.
Now, one more set of questions. My girlfriend is also in the market for a new notebook. She is getting it mainly for school and every day use. No gaming needed at all, so I was thinking about the dv6700t for her. Was gonna go with the T5750 2.0Ghz CPU and 2GB RAM (would upgrade for her if she needed, doubt she ever would though).
As far as a GPU for her, is the Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 - For Core 2 Duo Processors good enough? She wont be doing any gaming at all, maybe a movie here and there, so I figured the X3100 would be good enough.
Networking, is the 802.11b/g WLAN all she would need, or is upgrading to one of the others a good choice?
Battery, High Capacity 6 Cell or the extra cash for the 12 Cell? She is going to have it for school, so maybe its worth going for the extra battery time?
And last but not least, warranty? Should we both fork out the cash for the 2 year accidental damage and spills, or is 1 year fine enough?
===================
Few more questions I forgot to ask in the PM I sent to ya Chaz.
As far as my girlfriends laptop goes, Vista 32-Bit or 64-Bit? I dont see her laptop being upgraded to 4GB as she wont really need it, so is 32 the way to go?
In general, should she go with the dv6700t or possibly a midrange dv5t for around the same price? She is looking to spend about $900 (including tax and warranty) so what would be the better buy for the money?
I appreciate any help and info I can get. We are looking to order these laptops this week, so I am just trying to narrow down what is best for us to get.
You guys rock. -
Question to Chaz/Any Mod who wants to answer...
I read through the FAQ and didn't see anything about posting links, but, if I made an ISO of my Vista OEM disk would it be "against the rules" to link to a download of it? It would not be hosted via bit torrent.
I am not talking about piracy because it still needs the user's legit key in order to install and function properly. -
Rusch, I think you're making two pretty good choices for what you want out of the notebooks. For mostly regular use and some moderate gaming the specs on your dv5t should definitely work. As for which processor you should get, P8400 vs P8600, I'm not really sure but both are pretty fast. It depends on what kind of games you're going to be playing.
As for your girlfriend's notebook, 2.0ghz with 2gb should be plenty. And if she's never going to be playing any games, the integrated graphics is actually recommended. It'll run cooler, take less battery, and still be able to run movies and all your basic stuff. As for networking, it depends on what kind've networks you're going to be running on, but as for now 802.11b/g is good enough. This depends on whether or not you guys have access to an N network anywhere. The battery is your call, I'm sure someone here knows the battery lives of each. And for the extended warranty...um...I personally never get them, but a lot of other people do. I think it's preference except maybe if you notice that you/your girlfriend are a little accident prone...in which case you should go for it =P. -

But if it's against the rules, I wouldn't do it. Which is why I asked.
Thanks...
I'm still eagerly awaiting my dv5t...I haven't decided weather to keep it or not though since it's a freebie! -
Just wanted to know what would be the better Vista choice for my girlfriends notebook, 32 or 64 bit?
-
I can't believe there's no "search this thread" button. anyways, 2 comments/questions.
1) quick dock
I'm one of the people who have realized that the quickdock isn't compatible with the dv5t. when I called them up they said that it should have came with it's own AC adapter. so they mailed me a new one and it did not have an AC adapter. I actually don't think it is supposed to come with an AC adapter and as you all know, the dv5 AC adapter doesn't work with the quick dock.
what's my best recourse? call them up and ask for a newer model? (what model would that be?)
is there some sort of adapter that I can use to make the new AC adapter compatible with the dock? this is so odd because there is an adapter that makes the dock connect to the laptop.
2) The other issue I have is the remote is really not very responsive.
