I am using Everest to monitor temps, I guess I'll try another one also. It got up to 77c CPU and 96C GPU then I shut it down.

Hi Steve0, HP has delayed my P8600, so for now I have a nice T9600 that doesnt shut off when I close the lid :) I am affraid I have never played Crysis, so I am not gonna be much help there. How much does the game cost? When is your dv5 supposed to arrive? Did you try posting about the bluetooth mouse in other forums, like the accessories one? I will keep an eye out also. Talk soon.

I'll have to install everest and check my temps which I'll do in an hour after I finish work. I'll run up some games but I don't have COD4 with me...

You can try downloading CPUz Hardware monitor from www.cpuid.com
    and CoreTemp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp

You'll see a difference between them all... use the one with the lowest temp readings..... no reason. It'll just make you feel better :)

I have no scientific information on which one is more accurate, the arguements in other forums as to this question go on for thousands of pages... But comparing temps to program specific readings are the only way people can get a realistic value of temperature performance.

These laptops DO get hot, there's no denying that. I'm just thankfull it's Winter here at the moment and room temps are like 15degreesC

If your Posting temperatures in the future (this applies to everyone...) please reference which program and if possible the sensor it's monitoring so we can all line up the readings to make a usefull comparison.

    Thanks.

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but what the hell...

With the dv5t, when you close the lid, does the computer shut down or anything? Or will I be able to open it and resume where I left off?

Laptop I am currently using (old Dell Inspiron 1200), when I shut the lid, and reopen nothing happens. I need to turn the laptop off and reboot. :(

Ummm you know there's a power scheme option in advance options that can allow you to select what happens when you close your lid... I manually go in and modify them all to "Do Nothing" when I close the lid..

Right click on Power Meter (near clock) and select Power Options> Click Change Plan Settings> Click Change Advanced Power Settings> Click [+] Power Button and Lid> Click [+] Lid Close Action

Check out those options... it may be as simple as that?

    Thanks for the fast reply.

I dont have the notebook yet, but will set it to my needs when it arrives.

Like I said, stupid question heh...

With this Dell, when I re-open the lid, screen is black, and I need to reboot. My dad has the same laptop and his isnt like this one. Also, there is no option anywhere to change the setting.

Its all gravy though, dv5 arrives in like 2 weeks, this laptop wont be needed then. :)

EDIT: wow...just realizing that wasnt towards me. I thought you had accidentally quoted the wrong post. Oh well, some answer I spose...heh.

Ahh if life were only that simple. Thanks for the thought, but I ruled that out in the first 5 minutes. I still had to endure 2 hours of HP online tech support before they would admit it was a faulty lid switch. Ahh the hoops we must jump through in life. :)

Also, I don't get the problem with crysis. I don't know about "silky" but it's playable...

Hi Chaz (or anyone else who might know).
Looking at the two GPU's, 9600M GT and 9200M GS, which of the two will produce the least heat (both if playing, but most importantly when idle or just browsing, using word, etc.)? I would probably have gone for X4500 if possible as I don't play much games, but since HP in Denmark (and Europe in general) don't believe in the free right to choose, and only have a couple of standard models all with the Nvidia graphics then I must accept that if I want this computer.

For cooler temps you'd be best to go with the 9200 I'd imagine. Also pair it with the right CPU if heat is an issue at all for you. P8400 and the 9200 should give you good performance and cooler temps.

What program are you using to monitor the HDD temperature? I am using HDTune, and it's not giving me a measurement.
What is (was) the ambient room temperature? Sounds normal for a dv5t . . .
Agreed, we all need to be using the same programs if we want to be able to compare.
You can tell it to do whatever you want. I have mine set to do nothing when the lid closes. You can set it to hibernate, stand by, shut down, etc. And it works.
Great! Yes the guide really helps.

I haven't tried Crysis yet, but I will be doing benchmarks for the review. I'm looking for it to be posted next week.
This is working good in many people's laptops:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251
And it's very cheap AR. Note that is a 4GB (2x 2GB) kit . . . I don't think you are going to be able to find a single 2GB module.

    Its a 5c difference actually.

This is due to the Tjunction temp being detected incorrectly from the MSR (Model specific register).

Core temps = Tjunction - Delta

eg. Yonah CPUs have a Tjunction of 85c but programs like HWmonitor will detect it as 100c(Merom Tjunction) causing a 15c offset.

I need some clarification on who I should order through, HP.com or Costco.
    Is it a better to go w/ the -$100 off & 5% w/ 1 yr. Accidental ESP or Costco's 90 day return policy/ add. 1 yr. ESP.

Any bad experiences in dealing with HP.com? If I ordered from Costco online and wasn't happy with the DV5t could I return instore?

    Thanks in advance!

So when I receive my laptop I am gonna go through the link you posted Chaz.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532

Im not looking to do a clean install of Vista, but I am looking to follow all of thoe steps to get the best performance.

Will doing just that give me a nice performance boost, or is it the Vista clean install where it really makes it shine?

Do you think that the 1280x800 (Infinity) screen will be enough for my needs (i.e. programming, playing games and watching movies)? Note that it's important for the icons and fonts to be readable at default settings and I reckon that such a resolution is also better for gaming, as I wouldn't need to scale it down and I would remain at the native resolution. The only issue are the movies: will I notice a difference between HD Ready and Full HD movies? Will Full HD movies still have satisfying quality (I'm getting the laptop version with Blu-Ray, that's why I'm worried)? Thanks! :)

    I have two questions.

How exactly do you turn off bluetooth?

How do you set up the webcam for use with programs other than that "You Cam" program that HP gives you?

Through HP wireless assistant, wifi switch or through the device manager.

You set up the webcam through whatever program you use. It should be detected automatically.

No it doesnt have Hybrid SLi, so theres no integrated chipset.

You can choose from either x4500 or 9600m GT

I'm using Everest and HWMonitor. I just downloaded and installed HDTune after reading your reply. Those two programs that I've been using give the same temperature as HDTune. I actively tried to cool down my hard drive as it often reaches above 50 degrees Celsius. I'm not sure whether my hard drive is a defect or the design of the dv4t is a defect :(

As noted in the clean install guide, even if you uninstall the junk HP pre-loads, there is still stuff left behind (files, folders, registry keys). A clean install is literally a clean install - there's nothing on the hard drive but the OS and drivers when you are done. It's not necessary, but it is nice to start fresh.
One way or another, following the tune-up guide will give you a great lift in performance.
I suggest going to Best Buy to look at some 15.4" notebooks on display . . . they will have the 1280x800 resolution. It sounds like that is the way to go for you.
Thanks for the tip on HWMonitor. It is reading a temperature from "ACPI" - I guess that's the hard drive. Right now it is 42*C in a 72*F on a stone countertop, with the back not raised up. I have a Fujitsu 160GB 5400RPM - what kind of drive do you have, and what is the ambient room temperature? The 7200RPM drives run a few degrees warmer.

The maximum rated temperature for 2.5" notebook hard drives is usually 55*C. My old Sager's hard drive was always 50 - 55*C, since it didn't get that great of ventilation. Sounds like that is the case with your dv4t. 50-55*C isn't dangerous . . . however if it's going over 55*C, then you need to be careful. A notebook cooler would greatly reduce the notebook's temperature. Even raising up the back and letting more air flow underneath the notebook would help.
The dv5t is available (in the U.S.) with three cards:
    -Intel GMA X4500 (integrated)
    -Nvidia GeForce 9200M-GS
    -Nvidia GeForce 9600M-GT

The only one of those cards that can play Crysis is the last one.

My CPU temp under load is >64*C, and my GPU temp is in the low 80*C range (back end of the laptop raised up a half-inch).

Thank you for your advice. I'm planning to buy a Zalman notebook cooler.
Right now, for some reason, my hard drive temperature dropped to 47 degrees, which is high for most hard drives but low for mine :(.

By the way, I don't think the ACPI temperature is the hard drive temperature.
My HWMonitor shows the ACPI temperature, core temperatures, GPU core temperature, and the HDD temperature. I have a 160-GB Hitachi hard drive.

Strangely, the HD temperature is dropping... I hope it is a good sign, but it reached 59 degrees Celsius yesterday when I was installing Microsoft Office and multi-tasking....

Wow.. your CPU core temperatures look very low.... are you using a cooler? or, is it because it is the P series CPU?

    Find bluetooth. Disable it.

my hard drive is at 51 degrees with just basic surfing and what not. So it appears they run on the warm side in the dv5t with the faster cpu and gpu's. I guess the new dv series are just warm laptops. I suppose that will be good on cold winter nights :)

LOL you made me feel better... good on cold winter nights....
My HD temperature dropped to 47 degrees, and it is now 49 degrees again
    :(

What are your CPU temperature and core temperatures?
Because I disabled the "Fan Always On" option in the BIOS, my CPU (T9600 like yours) usually stays at the 40's. The fan begins to spin when the CPU temperature reaches high 50's and stops at about 41 degrees.

I think it'll be lower if I enable the "Fan Always On" option.

Hm . . . I think my hard drive might be lacking a temperature sensor in that case. Does anyone else have the Fujitsu 160GB 5400RPM "MHZ2160BH G2" model hard drive in their dv4t/dv5t notebook?

My CPU is a P8400, it tops out at 64*C under full wPrime load. I know people with the T-series CPUs are running significantly wamer.
That's all I did, and my machine is running great.

The tv tuner has two attatchments that come with it. One of them is an external antena and the other is a piece that allows you to hook up a coaxial cable. With the antena I was able to get some over the air HD channels when outside in my back yard, but when inside it doesn't work. With the coaxial connection I was able to get the exact same cable channels as my normal tv. We don't have an HD signal running to our house yet but I assume if you get HD to ur house can use it with the laptop through coax. With Windows Media Center you can download the tv guide easily and be able to get all of the info that cable boxes allow you to get such as what you are watching, a brief description, ratings, etc. Overall, I think its a good ad on, especially for a college student like me that just wants an all in one device.

i don't get this whole thing about clean install

a revo uninstaller is free and takes every single registry/related files and permanently deletes them...

a ccleaner scan after should take care of the rest.

it's much easier and much more practical...

here are the links for the downloads
    revo: http://www.revouninstaller.com/
    ccleaner: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

there is absolutely NO benefit to a clean install. After about 3 weeks of use, it'll deteriorate to the same level as a regular uninstalled computer. And the amount of registry keys left behind by REGULAR (not Revo) uninstall is about .0001% of total registry.

Does the revo or the ccleaner get rid of all programs even if you dont want it to. What if you dont know if you need a program will it tell you? I just dont want to delete something that i neded.

not to worry - you have complete control, and basically, anything the ccleaner finds won't be detrimental to you if you delete it anyways.

revo uninstaller will create a system restore point prior to uninstalling anything, so you can always revert back to your original form if you uninstall something you need.

i'm positive that if you look at the list of programs, there will be at least 5 that you will see as unnecessary, like "Symantech Trial 30 days" or whatnot.

To answer your question, no it will not delete anything without your consent and approval.

Hello every one this is my first post on this site. I have been following it since page eight and ordered my dv5t a couple of weeks ago and it should be here on the 10

    HP Pavilion dv5t Entertainment Notebook
    - Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)
    - 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
    - 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    - HP Imprint Finish (Mesh) + Microphone + Webcam
    - FREE Upgrade to Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN from 802.11b/g WLAN
    - 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - $100 OFF Microsoft(R) Office Home and Student 2007!!
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard

I was wondering if I made the right choice on the OS bc it is 64 bit not 32 bit and if the screen resolution is good enough for mild gaming?

I also bought COD4 and was wondering if the default graphics drivers were good or if I need to download 177(what is the difference between them) and will deleting the default drivers mess up the computer?

I thought about doing a clean install but was having trouble understanding how to burn the dvds that i needed so i will probably just delete the programs i do not want and run CCleaner and defragment.

last question is a 1000 dbi mouse good enough for modest gaming?

Ps: I am only 17 and have a lot to learn about this stuff so any help is much appreciated.

    Thx, Jon

64 bit OS runs much smoother and faster [as i heard]. some programs need to be 64 bit in order to install under 64 bit vista, for example, AVG antivirus.
It also needed for actually reading 4 GB RAM. A 32 Bit OS can only read upto 3 GB if I am not mistaken.

I would think 9600m GT is good enough for playing COD4, but i am not sure if it can handle the game smoothly under max setting.

I request someone (who already has a dv5t and has uninstalled programs.) to make a list of unneeded programs that can be uninstalled or deleted with ccleaner or the revo programs. I want to make my laptop preformance better by uninstalling unneeded programs, without messing it up...

It would be great help to many people and greatly Appreciated.

Thanks a bunch to who ever makes one! :)

    Steve

    Oh.. Chaz... Sorry...

I have one more question. You have the P8400. I saw the temperatures from the screen shot. Are they idle temperatures? Does the P processor stay at the low 40's? I want to know about the idle temperatures of the P series CPUs because I'm considering about an exchange with a dv4t that has the P8600.

Funny you ask this as I was looking at the specs today for the game as well. I ordered my laptop and placed my preorder for warhammer online right after. Even if it requires a modest amount more recources than wow, it should run just fine. I have run wow on 8400gs video, 2.0 cpu with 2GB ram and its fine enough on medium. The video card on the dv5t is MUCH stronger than the 8400.

Welcome to the forums, Jon. Page eight was a long time ago. ;)

There should not be a performance difference between 32- and 64-bit Vista unless you are running programs specifically written for 64-bit. In that case they will run much faster.

The default graphics drivers will work fine, though upgrading via the Driver Update Guide will improve your gaming performance a bit.

A 1000 dpi mouse is fine . . . however I suggest you post in our Accessories forum to get the best advice. Make a new thread there and tell us what you are looking for.
Vista 32-bit with SP1 can 'see' 4GB, but I don't know if it can actually use it all.

I went with 32-bit Vista since my iPod touch does not work with 64-bit.
Yes, it should run fine given the minimum requirements. The 9600M-GT is good enough to play any modern game at medium or high settings.
Yes, those are idle. I am now in a warmer room and it is idling in the mid-30*C range (~35*C). As I noted before, the highest I have seen it get over the last week under full load is 64*C. I don't have the back of the machine raised up.

The only program that HP installs that you actually need is Digital Persona if you opted for the fingerprint scanner, everything else is optional.

I installed a clean install of Vista and then just installed the drivers from HP and nothing more. (well I installed what I wanted to run but nothing from HPs lineup)

Every time I enter this thread I get more and more excited for my notebook to arrive.. Estimated build is the 14th, is it at all possible it can be built sooner?

I am super stoked heh. :D
