chaz when buying a new notebook and you are tech proficent you should always get the 64 bit os because later you will upgrade the ram to 4+ gb. Its why i went to 4 gb, plus it just makes things run easier

Hello!
I have read alot of pages on this thread but i cant find any 3DMark Scores or SuperPI or any comparing tests.
Im going to buy C2D P8600 @ 2,4Ghz with 9600 GT. Does anyone know the 3Dmark scores etc?
Thanks -

That said, as long as the RAM you are getting is 200-pin, DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) SO-DIMMs, it will work fine. The OCZ 4GB DDR2-800 kit on Newegg for $57 after the $25 MIR is an excellent deal:

BTW - here is a teaser shot from the review. It's 600kb so be careful.

So itunes doesnt work with a 64 bit OS?

Actually, Itunes 64 bits is only for windows vista x64 and work perfectly...
If you want to get it work with windows xp x64 the setup is lock but you can follow the instruction from this page and get everything to work fine :

Just ordered my dv5t.
Was $1794 after everything... (with student discount and coupon NB3089) and stupid sales tax.

The reason it was so much was because of the 3-year Accidental Damage Protection Extended Service Plan for Notebook PCs. I could not pass this up for the price. Will do the memory upgrade through Newegg. Tempted to go with a lower hard drive and upgrade that through Newegg as well, but wanted to stick with as much OEM as possible to ensure that if something went wrong, I would not have to swap out everything. -
wtf is up with the microphone on dv5t? did they run out of em too? rofl
-
whats the tradeoff in heat/battery life with the 9200M and the 9600M?
-
do you mean they don't have a built-in microphone? i would doubt that, right? it's part of the webcam thing?
would appreciate you elaborating.
thx! -
i have a microphone i dont know where it is though but ive used it before

Im thinking about getting one of these with the only upgrade being the video card. Im going to go with the 9600 (I think, which ever one is +$200). Would this be a good idea with the 2.0g? Im not good with computers. Will be used for gaming/school.
And I will probably upgrade the RAM when I get the cash. -
Lord Egregious Notebook Evangelist
So if this laptop is uncomfortable to use on your lap with a 9600 is it worth it just to get the 17" instead of the 15.4".
Also how does this 9600 GT compare to the xps DDR3 8600 GT? I'm really only interested in playing TF2 well since I own a 360. -
This change happened after I ordered so I better get one.

with Lenovo T61 and others, you can customize and get the Intel Turbo Memory Boost (aka Ready Boost but internally) IF you do not get the WWAN option (which would have taken up that internal slot).
Intel Turbo boost/internal Ready Boost possible?
does anyone know if we can upgrade the dv4t similarly by ourselves? i know that hp.com does not offer this as a customizable option.
thx! -

Hey guys the Dv5t is on sale @ best buy for $1099.99 USD!
im so happy, im getting it this week. -
OK I know this isn't a big deal but did anybody else who got the 9600m gt not get a nvidia sticker? If I spend $200 on it I expect some recognition!

Hi all, So I am having all kinds of trouble getting the eSATA port working on the dv5t. I am using a Vantec Nexstar 3 external enclosure. So far the only way I can get it to show up is to shut the laptop down, hook up the drive, and then turn the laptop back on. If I put the laptop to sleep it cant wake up unless I unhook the drive. If I do this, it wont see the drive again unless I shut everything down. Very annoying. I thought eSATA was a hot swap deal. Has anyone else tried the eSATA port? Thanks

In New Zealand here we can only get 1 of 3 set prebuild configs - all with 1280x800 sadly. Anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to get 1680x1050? I've spoken to HP NZ and they can't help, nor can their spare parts. So I guess only option would be to import? So I'll probably have to bit the bullet and settle for 1280.
-
How's the text size on the 1680x1050 WSXGA+ display? I've been hearing good things about it, but I don't want to have to strain to read things.

Hi! I'm new; please be kind if I do something stupid. I've read nearly every post in the thread, that ought to be worth something, right?
My old laptop died and I'm looking at the dv5t. I have a couple of, er, different? questions. I have a really rare disorder that makes my skin sensitive to light. A laptop is pretty much my only contact with the world, but I have to be careful not to spend too much time absorbing photons. So my questions are all about light-related things.
Infinity display: If you had to cover your laptop display with a special light filtering film, would you imagine that the infinity display would make a nicer, flatter surface for easier application? I tape it around the edges. I've been scared to try actually adhering it to a display. I'm also thinking about trying a "privacy filter" screen for lower light output (can't bounce around the room behind me) and that might be easier for applying my film.
Infinity display 2: If you were using your laptop in a dark room anyway, do you think the infinity display would cause more or less light to be reflected back onto your face? (I told you they'd be weird questions. Sorry!)
Shiny happy LED indicators: If every bit of extra light was a problem (pretend you're photographic paper and you don't want to be exposed), how bad would you say all the little lights are? On my old pavilion, I was able to put black tape over all the little indicator lights. Could I still use the quickplay (I think that's right) buttons along the top of the keyboard? Think I could cover up or disconnect the HP beacon on the back of the display?
Shininess of the deck: Do you think the keyboard deck reflects onto your hands or your face if you're in an otherwise dark room?
I'd be super appreciative of any comments about these issues! Including recommendations of other models if you think the terminator t1000 notebook is a bad choice for a pseudo-vampire. (It's so not fair. Vampires in movies and books never have these kinds of problems!) I liked the montevina platform and CPU/GPU choices in the dv_t's.
Thanx very much for bearing with me. -
BTW, I'm new. I'm probably one of the few women in here...I appreciate technology and love my new DV5T, which is decked out! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. -
-
so other than the 5% off coupon is there anything else to get this laptop cheaper?
btw so is the only thing worth upgrading the vid card other than the free upgrades and should i get vista 32 or 64 bit?
im aiming for like 1k or slightly above it -
A couple questions (i should be receiving this laptop in a couple days...)
- is there a possibility to expand the ram to 6 or 8 gb if i wanted to in the future?
- will most of the programs i used on winxp 32bit work on the 64bit windows vista?
- are the coolers available for the laptop that don't need to be plugged into the A/C and work from USB any good, or should i go for the traditional ones?
- what's the best way to clean the infinity displays from fingerprints and dust?
On a side note, does anyone know if Western Digital will be releasing a 500gb version of the portable usb "passport" hard drives anytime soon?
Thanks -

From what I'm hearing (and hoping myself), you should have no problem using 32 bit programs on 64 bit. Some stuff that worked for XP, however, may not be the best for Vista.
According to Chaz, a half inch lift under the notebook goes a long way. I think I may try the Xpad if necessary.
I know that WD has a 500GB in the 2.5" variety externals, and they also come with USB/Firewire/eSATA connections. -
this notebook can go to 8 gb of ram, 32 bit operations work fine on 64 bit and yes the little 1/2 inch does go a long way

The Infinity surface would definitely be easier to apply films/protectors over . . . I don't have any experience with the type of films you speak of though. Applying something to the dv5t's Infinity display would be like applying something to a piece of glass.
The indicators lights are not super bright, but based on what you're saying, you will want to cover these up with some tape. You could definitely cover up the HP logo on the back of the display with a piece of tape, no problem.
In a dark room, no, I don't think it reflects.
Honestly, I think that you may be better off going with a business class notebook, which won't have the glossiness of the dv5t. I like Dell Latitudes. We can give you expert help if you complete the FAQ in the What Should I Buy forum.

-As noted, even raising the back of the dv5t up does a lot for the temperatures. A USB powered cooler would be more than enough.
-Microfiber towels. Buy lots of them.
-They probably will, given they're in competition.
I have heard bad things about the current 2.5" 500GB drives. Slow, they run hot, and consume a lot of power. The fastest hard drives on the market right now is the WD 320GB 7200RPM. -

Hi all,
This is my first post here, been reading this thread from day one =]
Ive recently purchased my dv5t at Costco, like the price and the features.
What i would like to know is what are the options for upgrading the laptop in the future? Been reading things about 8GB of RAM and would like to know whether its true. -

To upgrade to 8 gb ram wouldn't you need two 4gb sticks of ram? Correct me if I'm wrong. Also, if that's the case the 4gb ram sticks are pretty hard to find and are very expensive.Lastly. is it possible to put 4 2gb sticks(much cheaper) in the HP dv5t???
-
It only has 2 dimm slots, so you would need 2x4GB sticks.....

Chaz: I noticed you posted in the "Clean install..." thread and frequently post here, so i thought I'd ask here if you had any tips on doing the clean install with your DV5t following the guide in these forums. Or was it pretty straight forward just as the guide describes? Also, what Vista disc did you use for it? I should have ordered the disc with my purchase and didn't think to do it.... -

Order Dates and expected "finish build dates" and delivery/ship dates, please:
may i ask what the recent experience has been of the participants of this thread?
=================================
Date Ordered on hp.com
Expect "finish build date" shown AT TIME of ordering
Changed "finish build date" as time went on
Final "Shipped Out" Date
Date of Actual Receipt of dv5t
==================================
Hope at least some folks are kind enough to provide some of this infothe excitement of the wait and feeling bummed that the wait time is so long is unbearable
so, please help me out with the abovementioned info. thx! -

Looking for 4GIGS of RAM for my dv5t. Please advise. Thank you.
-
Hi all,
So I have two sets of memory to get rid of. They are both 4gb sets composed of two 2gb sticks. One set is 800mhz for dv4 5 and 7 series, the other is 667mhz for all older laptops. The 800mhz memory is genuine hp stuff taken out of a new machine. The 667mhz is Crucial brand. Private message me if you have any interest. Will go to highest offers. If this is not where I should post this, someone let me know. Thanks -
What i meant in my previous post was that I was wondering whether it is possible to upgrade to 8GB with the dv5t (in the future)... does the P45 mobile chipset support that much memory?
EDIT: OK, just done skimming through Intel's PM45 datasheets and heres what I've discovered:
- The PM45 chipset supports 8 GB of either DDR2 or DDR3
- Full support for asymmetric memory access, that means that you shoud not worry about buying 3GB systems.
- One curious detail is that Intel doesn't state that a given motherboard supports DDR2 OR DDR3. Does that mean that unless the DIMMs are physically different, modules could be switched when the time is right and the price is low?
