The remote is standard, check the link under the image of the laptop in the main cutomization page on HP's website. it will list the standard ports/connections that ship with the laptop.

There are LOTS OF PICS. -
Ordered: Aug. 4th
Shipped: Aug. 11th
Recieved: Today Aug. 14th
I'm sorry i dont remember the exact expected build date but i know they shipped it 3-4 days earlier than expected, and transit time to the east coast doesn't seem that bad. (then again my laptop had almost no delays or missed cut offs.
Hope that helps.

Using $400 coupon it will save you about $250 over Costco same set up ... but with Costco ... you have 90 days Return Policy vs HP's 21 days ... and you get Costco Conceirge ... so after 90 days something hits teh fan they will be calling HP and bugging them on your behalf to get the thing fixed ... but then again ... if you deal directly with HP ... you may end up getting a free upgrade if they can't repair the lappy for you.

fine. It's a 25-watter, which will help in the battery life/cooling dept.

Question:
Does anyone else have a "problem" with the speaker mute button/light?
The light should be lit in white when the speakers/audio are on, and it should be orange when they are muted.
Before doing all the software updates the button worked just fine.
Now, after boot up and ready to go the light is orange.
The mute function still works as the lower right corner speaker icon shows "mute" when I press the HP button, but the touch panel icon stays lit in orange and won't go to white.
During boot up the light goes white then quickly orange, then white a couple of times and then goes to steady orange.
It seems like a software/firmware issue more than a mechanical function problem. Anyone else have this issue?
Also, the touch volume control is a bad idea as it doesn't work very well.
I've read other reviews indicating the same thing.
Sometimes the function works and most times it doesn't.
I do notice that the touch volume works better when watching a DVD or using HP's software where volume control is active.
Overall, it's a minor issue really. But, since HP decided to add these things and we pay for them, they should work properly. -
for me importance goes:
1. snappiness / speed of operation when multitasking (i dont do a whole lot, but i want it lightning fast for the price im paying here)
2. HEAT
3. noise
i dont game (on my laptop) and i mostly have it on my lap. my biggest worry is that 2.4ghz wont be enough in a year or two and ill start to feel like im back on my 1.6ghz AMD Compaq living in quicksand -

Hello everyone, this is my first post! I want to thank you all for the great info posted so far. First off, my config:
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)
15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
[For BrightView Infinity] Webcam + Microphone
HP Color Matching Keyboard
Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
No High speed 56K modem port
SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
No TV Tuner w/remote control
High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
OCZ 2x2(4GB) RAM (in hand)
This is my first laptop, and I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind.
1. Does it matter if I install my memory before or after I perform a cleanup/uninstall?
2. Why are there no sound cards offered with this machine? And why has no one mentioned any on this thread? Any recommendations?
3. I was looking for a stunning new game to break this bad boy in, but the top 3 games I found (Crysis, Bioshock, Mass Effect) all have this DRM crap it installs on your computer. And apparently you can't even play them without an internet connection (I was looking to play something on my breaks at work w/out net). How harmful/annoying can these DRM programs be? Anyone had problems with these games? Any other game recommendations would be great as well!
Sorry if I sound noobish, I am a long time console gamer and finally took the plunge into PC gaming and really don't want to screw up my shiny new machine! Thanks in advance for any responses! -

Just bought a DV5T using the NB6997 $400 off code. In addition to the code there is a site called fat wallet that claims to give you an additional 5% cash back if you order through thier site. You have to wait 90 days...A friend confirmed that it works as he has recieved his check. Here are my specs, I think its a great deal...
- HP Pavilion dv5t Entertainment Notebook
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
- Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz)
- 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
- 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
- 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
- FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
- Webcam Only
- HP Color Matching Keyboard
- FREE Upgrade to Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN from 802.11b/g WLAN
- No High speed 56K modem port
- SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
- No TV Tuner w/remote control
- High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
- Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
- HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
Total - $953.99 with NJ tax it was $1020.77....I should get an additional $48 back in 90 days from fat wallet assuming I dont return it. -

The touch slider is unreliable, I agree . . . right now mine is unresponsive. However when it is less humid, it works fine.
1. I would boot the laptop with the memory it came with first to make sure it works fine. Then after you finished your install, shut down the laptop and install the new memory. It doesn't technically matter, though.
2. The integrated sound is pretty good . . . I suggest trying it before you buy a dedicated sound card. Getting a dedicated sound card isn't going to help your performance much anyway since the CPU does the audio processing.

2 questions:
Does anyone know how long the $400 coupon will be available?
and
Why can't I find the search button on this forum? -
-
$400 coupon? Has anyone been able to get HP to price adjust based on this coupon? I called, and they told me I'd have to return the laptop and place a new order. Can anyone point me to the fine print for this coupon?
Since mine had to go through Indiana, I would expect little difference between east/west coast. I am only an hour from the Oakland airport, so the actual trucking time might be longer/shorter depending on how close your city is to a fedex-used airport.
Recap: ordered 9/4 @ 11pm (PT), depart Shanghai 8/11, depart Anchorage 8/12, depart indianapolis 8/13, depart oakland 8/13, arrive 8/13 @10am. -
Yeah, I was able to do it even after I told that no it couldn't happen (I posted a relatively long post on page 110:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=277341&page=110
saying what i did, and giving a few pointers on what to do to get it that money).
The only thing is your notebook has to have cost 1,299$ (before rebates/coupons) in order to qualify - although another poster was able to get 100$ back even though they didnt qualify for the coupon.
Hope that helps

Well, I ordered from HP after cancelling my order with Costco. I found myself trying to put upgrades on to get up to the $1299 (for the 400 off) that I definitely didn't need.. the only thing I'm having second thoughts about is that I chose the higher screen res.. but I see a lot of you are. I just don't want everything to look itty bitty. I chose the 2.4 processor and 4 gigs of RAM, but now that I'm looking through some older posts..someone had said if you don't do intense gaming, etc. you'll never notice it? ugh I got more upgrades for the same price about I paid at Costco..but I did lose that extra year of warranty. I hope the upgrades were worth it is all. for $28 more I :
lost one year of warranty, but upgraded
8400 to 8600
better screen res
better batt
went from 2gb to 4
chose bluetooth (only to get up to 1299)
If you guys think this was dumb of me..plz let me know. I do think I can still cancel my order..
note: I am just an ordinary user.. though I love technology so don't want just the basics -
BAh!
FedEx came to bring my notebook today but they came while I was sleeping! 8:40am, I had my alarm set for 9.
Slip says I can go pick it up tonight after 8pm, so I am deff going to do that. Just wish I had gotten it this morning. I got out of work early today also. -
May I ask if anyone has thought about whether this "registered and activated as intructed in the HP care pack materials" has any impact on HOW one "registers and activates" this, meaning BEFORE or AFTER the re-install of clean Vista install?
my concern is that the clean Vista reinstall may wipe out certain items that they "check" while you're registering.
thx. i'm planning on doing the clean reinstall asap when i get it. -
BTW, does HP have any sort of site similar to Dell's IdeaStorm where users can submit ideas, etc? -
-
Hey can anyone help me here?
Everytime I try to restart Windows after doing this clean install an error message comes up.
Its name reads CL RC Engine3 Dummy Winidow (not Window): QPService.exe - Application Error
The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000005) occured in the application at location 0x22770c9c.
Click on Ok to terminate program
And when I restart Windows I get this error:
Microsoft Windows
HID DATA has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
So any ideas? -
I do wear contacts/glasses, so my eyes are sharp. I guess if it was too tiny no one would like the higher res right?
So my new total for laptop is $903.99 -80.00.. wow $823.99 *feeling a little happier*
Again guys.. I'm cheap.

Coupon update
After reading Terry's posts, I called HP again. I was pretty nice but did ask to speak to a manager after the first rep politely told me he couldn't help. The manager offered me $150 credit which I accepted.
As mentioned, the NB6997 coupon can't be combined with the $100 instant rebate, and also can't be combined with my $50 external monitor instant rebate. So I'm still $100 short of the full $400, but my laptop wasn't $1299 before rebates. I could have returned this one and ordered a more fully loaded one for about the same final price, but I wasn't that excited about sending back my 2-hour old (running time) laptop and then waiting for a new one! (ok, basically free bluray would have been nice, but I don't actually own any bluray yet, and now I won't feel compelled to buy any. Yet.)
On another note, it looks like some of the HP-added extras don't show up in the control panel's uninstall list, so is there an easy way to track down and delete these apps? -
I got the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT partly to help me get to $1299 for the $400 and partly because I heard that my favorite game, Tiger Woods 2008, won't run on the integrated X4500.
Can anyone confirm that the game wouldn't run on the X4500? I am becoming jittery about the heat issues a little bit.
Thanks. -
cant confirm, but i can confirm you'll be playing some very nice quality golf

Woo! Got my dv5t.
Posting here on it right now!
I am gonna go play around with this bad boy for a little bit, ill be back with some impressions later/ -

Let us know how it is, especially around heat.

I picked up this laptop with the outstanding $400 offer, so I'm eagerly awaiting it in the mail. Like many others, I'm most concerned about the heating issue as it relates to hardware failure -- comfort and being able to use it on my lap is less of a problem, but I don't want melted silicon. Although, the first post says it is mostly solved with a small lift or cooling device. If that's all it takes, then I'll be perfectly satisfied with the unit given the outstanding price point of ~$975 with the promotional offer. If it melts in front of my eyes, then I'll be pretty frowny. That said, I'm not too interested in Crysis and likely won't be running any games of that intensity.

How's you Dv5t? -
gah does the resolution really matter?
i got the 1280x800 infinity screen
im mostly gonna be using it for schoolwork browsing gaming and on occassion movies -
Chaz (or anyone), would you use the dv5t on your lap ever, under any circumstances?
If not, how about with a stand that sits on your lap that you place the laptop on? Any you recommend? -
does the 400 coupon work for accessories?
ie., if i cant get my order over 1299, can i tack on accessories to get the price up? or is it on the laptop price only -
Best way is to just add what you what to get the price to $1299 and start going through the checkout process, add the coupon and see if it works. -
sounds like the only way to find out
i just have to make up another 100 to get to the goal price, but dont want to add useless things like a tv tuner or w/e, but a new bag or cooling mat might be handy -
Can someone direct me to the proper gpu driver to have installed?
please and thank you. -
Can someone tell me the best program to moniter the temps of the cpu and gpu, and the website to download it at.
Thanks!!! -
I can't vouch for the tool(s).
But, I am looking forward to your analysis. -

****, woulda been good to buy the docking adapter and then just sell it on ebay to make some of the sum back...
