Hey guys, just went to office depot to get some dl dvd's for when the dv5t gets here. They had a DV5T w/ 2 Ghz C2D/4 gig ram and 320 gig hard drive/9200 Nvidia card for $999 after mail in. Just wanted to let you know in case anyone was interested.

See here how to enable the console:
    http://www.tweakguides.com/Crysis_8.html
I recommend going through that whole guide starting at page one if you want the best possible Crysis gameplay experience.
It's more of a personal preference than anything. I've had my battery out all day and I have noticed no difference in heat. The battery is not a main producer of heat - it only gets warm when it charges. Even then, the heat it produces is negligible.
I forget what battery level it comes with . . . 70% I think. So, no more than an hour to fully charge.
Define 'cheap'. The Targus Chillmat is decent, and if you have $45 - $50, then the Zalman NC1000.
That's a good question. I haven't heard of anyone's battery connectors corroding . . . and members on these forums have been taking out their batteries for a long time. The heat from the laptop should prevent any moisture from building up there so you will be fine. I wouldn't worry about it.
I don't know of any models with WSXGA+ and the 9600 . . . it seems HP is only selling pre-built models with the WXGA screen.

When I said cheap, like $30-40 tops.

I just want something that works well with the dv5t, and will cool it down enough so it is safe to game.

Can not having any stand or cooler while gaming eventually damage the notebook due to the heat?

Anyone familiar with HP promotions care to guess how long the $400 will stick around? Is this sort of coupon standard fare for HP?

I'm looking to order a dv5t in about 2-3 weeks.

    Thanks much

I just ordered one...I'm a big gamer so I hope the heat isn't as bad as it sounds.

Any more creative ideas on what to use to lift the back up .5-1 inch to allow for better cooling? Also, do I remember reading correctly that when there's a 12 cell battery offered for this computer, using it will lift up the back?

    Hey everyone,
Has anyone with a dv5t gotten BSOD's with IRQL DRIVER NOT LESS OR EQUAL with bcmwl6.sys (Broadcom's wireless driver)? I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers multiple times, but after an hour or so after bootup, the comp goes BSOD on me.
    Thanks.

Still curious if discount coupons are typical for HP. ???

Have there been any delays on the dv5t when ordering? I ordered a Studio 15 July 26th and have since been through 2 delays. I expect a 3rd this Tuesday as it is still in the build stage(not yet reached boxing). I am considering ordering a dv5t as the -$400 coupon is an amazing deal.

    Buy this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/Antec-NOTEBOO...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1219005963&sr=8-1

I just bought one and it is doing wonders to my old laptop which used to overheat after a couple hours of use. Now its been on for atleast 2 days straight. It's also made out of aluminum so its cooler for the laptop unlike the Targus one, I believe. Only gripe is that the blue LED light that shows its powered up is a tad bit bright when in the dark but you could easily cover it if you have any problems.

Lotta...i've been following your studio 15 as we had the same specs and ordered on the same day .....until i cancelled my dell and got the dv5t...

There are NO delays with the dv5t...they are actually shipping them out early...my dv5t will be done the same day as the studio 15 was supposed to...(on the 19)

Get the dv5t and get the MUCH better specs then what we ordered for the 15...

Also as a plus...i've talked to HP and they have much better service than dell...
Dell blatantly lied to me on more than one occasion...i can't take that...HP was very helpful in answering all my questions...

You better get the dv5t soon too bro because i hear that the 400 off deal is either over or very close to it.

Yeah I've just been having a slight problem. A laptop is my high school graduation present and I am using my mom's credit card. I already re-ordered my S15 due to the fact that I had to change a few things in the config. Now I am asking my mom for a credit card for the third time and she doesn't really understand things like this. She told me if it is delayed again, which it will be, I can order a different laptop(the dv5t). I already built a dv5t and it simply a lot better than the S15 I have built.

    For $1364:

HP – Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)

    Dell - 32 bit

    HP – Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)

    Dell - Intel® Core 2 Duo T8100

    HP - 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1680 x 1050)

Dell - Hi Resolution/Bright, glossy widescreen 15.4 WLED display (1440x900)

    HP – 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)

    HP – 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

Dell - 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450

HP - 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

    Dell - 320GB 5400RPM

HP – [For BrightView Infinity] Webcam Only

    Dell - webcam

    HP - Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN from 802.11b/g WLAN

    Dell - 1510 Wireless-N Card

    HP - 2 year hardware warranty/accidental

    Dell - 3 year hardware warranty/accidental

    The Dell is $150 more.

If I hadn't blown all my $$$ on the dv5 and a backpack and a mouse and memory, I'd upgrade my G router with the Linksys N.

This thread is COMPLETELY out of control. Almost 1500 posts! Its not even 3 weeks old yet, is it?

Wow, I guess I didn't realize this dv5t was THAT new. I must say, right now I've got a dv6753cl I got from Costco. I really love it - but after doing more research and finding out that I could get a better laptop for the same price, I just knew I couldn't settle with it. I ordered the studio 15..but the multiple delays I got annoyed me (especially the whole month later one) and then I found the dv5t and canceled the studio. I like this 6700 laptop so much, that I'm glad I'm getting an hp that's similar..just better. I really wanted the hdmi port also - the $400 coupon just gave me some nice upgrades.. can't wait to get it!

Anybody got a chance to maybe clean out the cpu fan on this machine yet?

Also anybody thought of reapplying thermal grease on the CPU as factories usually dont do a great job on it?

Asking because I was looking at pics of the bottom of the computer and it doesnt look like you can access the CPU/ CPU FAN.

    Any inputs?

    nwperformance: re: eSata

in all likelihood, the combo port only provides low power on the usb portion. (in order to prevent cross firing between the pins)

as such, this port will not provide enough power for an external drive on usb unless the drive has it's own power supply that powers NOT only the drive mechanism, but also the interface circuitry. (for most enclosures, this circuitry is powered by the usb port)

please test your Vantec NexStar 3 using the usb plugged into a DIFFERENT usb port of your dv5t. If this is indeed the issue, using a POWERED usb hub connected to the combination port with the Vantec drive plugged into the HUB should correct the issue.

hope this works and solves the mystery!

    hi JK,

I was also wondering if the fan could be accessed from under the keyboard like my old hp nc6230. I am going to a dusty foreign country in about a month and it is survival to know how to access the fan and cpu heat sink grill.

I found a disassembly guide at retrevo.com for the dv6000 which includes the dv6700.
On the dv6700 the fan is on the underside of the mob in between the bottom case, so you have to remove the mob which is a hassle.

So I am wondering if they reengineered the layout on the dv5t to make the fan accessible from under the keyboard, which would be nice.

If you go in there to grease up your cpu, could you take pictures please? I think in 6 to 8 months a lot of owners are going to be asking how to get to the fan and heat sinks for cleaning.

I would open my own case but don't have the nerve at this point.

    Ok just ordered my dv5t:

    - FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    - FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - Webcam Only
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)

    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

All this for 899.99 before taxes
This is actually the base price of the dv5t, so i think i got a pretty nice deal. I guess waiting until the last second to buy a laptop for college paid off. But i will be buying a 12 cell lithium battery once it comes out.

Hey, I thought you guys would like to see some nice screenshots that I took in crysis. I took them at 1680x1050 res and all settings set to very high(DX10). I did this for the eye candy even though i was getting 6-10fps. Normally I play at a low res. at med. settings and get 30+ fps. I actually have the first picture attached as my desktop background with the 3 palm trees. Make sure you zoom in to see it at full res.
I had to convert from BMP tp JPG thats why it says "converted on the top left b\c I have the free converter and the free version of fraps only takes BMP's.

Let me know what you guys think of them... :)

    ============================

not to introduce something "unpopular" here on this thread... ;) but one of the new dell's, the semi ruggedized one, is said by dell to be "dust resistant". maybe it would be good to look into that one, just in case it suits your specific needs.

    just a thought...

my dv5t is at the airport now...hopefully, FedEx will try to delivery it tomorrow, rather than wait for the "expected delivery date", which is 2 days later!!!

Most likely. The trend i've seen here is that you get it around the estimated build day. Mine was the 19th and right now its already in Memphis, TN (I live in VA) when Fedex says that my estimated arrival is on the 20th so here's hoping for the best!

Hope yours will get to a local depot later tonight and, maybe, it will be "out for delivery" tomorrow?!?

Mine is at the airport now...hopefully, they'll get it "in town" and on a truck and post "out for delivery" on their website soon!! Wish me luck... ha ha...

Can you travel safely with the dv5t? I ask because of the heat issues and I certainly wouldn't want to have to carry a notebook cooler around with me too. I am going to probably be traveling 4 times a year and would need to be able to bring this notebook with me. I don't suppose there is a way to tone down the GPU to a bare minimum display GPU while traveling or something?

Hey just to let you guys know it is unplayable at very high settings which I took the screen shots at, but it still looks amazing at med. settings and I get 35+ fps at med. You need like a $3000+ computer to play crysis at very high. Like I said at very high when I was takin the screenshots I only had 6-10fps but it still is amazing at med. settings. Im very impressed with the 9600Gt. :D

Cool. How hot did your dv5t get while playing? Do you have a cooler?

That is definitely a driver error. Try downloading a newer driver from Broadcom's website.
That's the one. I don't have any temperature reports, only that it makes the dv5t feel significantly cooler.
Haven't tried; I suggest checking HP's site for service guides.

Unless you have a CPU that runs at 95*C (like some people with the T9600), then it's not worth it. Applying an aftermarket thermal compound such as Arctic Silver 5 will take at most maybe 5*C off the CPU temp. This is only really important in systems where every degree counts. If your CPU is 95*C under full load, that is very close to the 105*C maximum temperature for one of the Core 2 Duos in the dv5t.
However, for a system like my dv5t where the CPU runs at 64*C or less under full load . . . it would make no difference.

No I don't have a cooler I just raise the back a half of inch for ventilation. It does get hot but I have not measured the heat yet b\c I did'nt dl the program. Most ppl should be fine if they just lift the laptop half an inch...

    Great idea chaz.

I have the 9600M GT and theres really nothing to worry about heat wise when not gaming. I only noticed heat while playing Far Cry. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

    Hey,
I cant give a first hand account of this but I have heard the difference in the recourses needed to Run XP And Vista are not that vastly different, however XP doesnt show ALL of its RAM (if i remember correctly the number is somewhere between 150-300mb of ram that is omitted in its RAM usage) where as Vista shows all of it. This is what Ive heard from several credible sources. As for streamlining take a page out of Chaz's book, he seems to have it down to the bare minimum.

Hope that helps, but more RAM is never bad
