As far as I am concerned, outside the US there are only preconfigured models. The ones with ATI graphic cards go with AMD processors and NVIDIA with Intel. If you want your HP to have a better graphic card maybe the only way is to buy outside of your country but on this issue I cannot help. Sorry.

Anyone use the Logitech v470 bluetooth mouse on this yet? Newegg.com has a deal on it, $40.99 with free shipping, coupon code EMCAJBEAE. I get mine Monday morning, I'll let you know how it works (if smeone else doesn't beat me to the punch!).

i have a feeling that FedEx tries to please the special type of "bulk" shipping service that hp uses from shanghai. my dv5t cleared customs today in the afternoon (anchorage).

FedEx's phone customer service people weren't the most accurate though...they told me that my shipment would "sit in shanghai fri, sat, and sunday because it's the 'weekend'". Huh? the opposite happened: it left shanghai fri/sat, and arrived in anchorage on Sat, even cleared customs on Saturday!

Kudos to the US Customs! I thought that they don't work on weekends/Saturdays.

now, whether or not it will continue its journey to Indianapolis is another question...

Can anybody confirm that the HDMI port carries both sound and video on dv5t?

Just curious as I don't think it did/does both on the DV6500t, video only.

    thanks

    It does on the dv5z : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=270195

So I am pretty sure the dv5t would do the same.

I have been reading up on this website about the dv5t series and I have just sold my old HP dv5191ea as it was giving me problems (fan was creating too much noise)

I was looking up on hp's website and I saw the dv5t lappys on the UK website and the config was comparitively slow/less then to the config on the Middle East site.

I live in UK and have family in Saudi Arabia. I was looking at the dv5-1070ee middle east model ( http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/me/en/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-3329744-64354-64354-3744188-3767379.html)
and it seems to have pretty much everything of top config. What I was wondering is the website doesnt mention if the 9600M-GT has DDR2 or DDR3 memory, is there a way to find out, also is there a possibility that Hp would have fixed the heat issue by the end of aug (as the main HP resellers down here Jarir and Extra are expected to receive them by end of Aug).

Thanks a lot Chaz for all your help and effort (the review of dv5t was really good).

Oh man, I didn't know that thing about the battery. So if I'm not planning on taking it around for a while, I should pull the battery out? Can I just go ahead and pull the battery out while my computer's on and plugged in? Or do I need to shut it off, then pull out the battery and restart it?

    Thanks. :)

The 9600M-GT is DDR2 in the dv5t. It's still a good performer, better than a stock 8600M-GT DDR2. I have a feeling this card has some overclocking headroom in it, though I have not tried any yet.
Yes, you can leave the battery out while plugged in. Drain it to 70% charge level and store it in a cool place if you are going to take it out.

I like to keep my battery in just in case of a power outage. I might start taking it out though, since I rarely ever move my laptops . . .

AndrewCK asked me to get a list of what you need to install after a clean install, so here's the stuff I did (all of this in the swsetup folder):

In the Drivers folder in this order:
    -Chipset (restart)
    -Video (restart)
    -SATA
    -Network
    -WLAN
    -BTOOTH
    -ProtSHD
    -Touchpad
    -Audio

    Other (not in Driver folder):
    -QTouch
    -QPW
    -YouCam
-CyberDVD (CyberLink DVD suite . . . I use it to watch DVDs)

    That's all I can remember.
Well if you mean a hardware fix, as in, them changing the design, it's not going to happen. The heat is not technically an issue/problem since the notebook isn't overheating. However, it does get quite warm. Just raise the back up and you'll be fine.

    Full benchmarks are here:

If I get this laptop (looking likely right now), I'll be getting the 2gigs of ram from HP and then upgrading to 4 gigs later on. Can I get whatever or are there compatability issues since this is a new laptop?

Can anyone recommend what ram I should get? There seems to be a lot of differences, including fancy low latency and all that. What brand and type should I get?

    Thanks!

Also what are you guys using to "lift the back up .5-1 inch? Someone recommended taping coins together and putting them under the back feet but I'm wondering if there are better solutions?

I left out the YouCam software, because I doubt I'll use it. I used my webcam on Skype and it worked just fine without YouCam. I also loaded my fingerprint program (if you have the reader - its Digital Persona).

I've started to mess around with Linux a tiny bit. I couldn't get wifi to work at all no matter what I tried. I searched around and no one else can get the Intel 5100 working either. I heard some people saying the new kernel will support it, however. In OpenSUSE the volume works fairly well and I got the video working. I haven't tried Ubuntu yet as I don't have my LiveCD on me.

Sadly, I use whatever I can find. I was using my camera yesterday, and today I used my memory key. I need to find something more permanent.

Latency doesn't matter. Any DDR2-800 (PC2-6400), 200-pin SO-DIMM memory will work. This OCZ kit on Newegg is currently the best deal . . . $57 AR:

Thanks for the info. I will probably get rid of that software pronto. I never used the webcam on my old laptop, and I doubt I will ever use it on this.

Ok, I am having trouble with a fresh install. I go through most of it fine until I get to Completing Installation. It just stops doing anything even after letting it sit for a hour. Is there something i need to do to get this back up and running?

Definitely go for the Newegg OCZ deal. It's a killer deal, the RAM went in effortlessly, and from what I'm seeing, OCZ really stands behind their stuff. Any problems reported on Newegg were responded to within hours (read the comment sections on Newegg). Also, I got an email that they received and are processing my rebate!

As for the 1/2" lift, I use 2 coasters, one under each pad in the back. No problem.

    Hey Chaz,
What exactly is QTouch? I assume it's for the touch sensitive media controls. Does it have anything to do with QuickPlay? I did a clean install and all of my touch sensitive controls work fine, and I never installed the QTouch software. I figured if they work fine, why bother..I'll leave it as it is.

By the way, love your avatar! :D

I use sleipnir, and it uses the fingerprint reader fine, But then again it can use several different rendering engines. I have the basic layout similar to the old IE and the tab design as firefox.

Can anyone tell me what drivers I need to have before I install. As I said up above, my install is getting stuck at "completing installation." I am now fairly confident that I am missing drivers. If this is not the case, I would love to hear what would fix this.

Hi everyone. This is my first post here. I am strongly considering purchasing a dv5t mainly for school. (computer science major) most of my classes that the laptop would come in handy are 3 to 4 hours long. Because of this I am concerned about the battery life of 2.5 - 3.2 hours. Does anyone know if HP is planning on offering a 12 cell battery in the near future. I would love to buy this laptop because the specs are the best offered right now, but if it wont make it threw class what would be the point. It also seems that the 12 cell would lift the back giving the needed air flow space for better cooling. I don't want to carry 2 batteries in my backpack.

Hey vbnet. I'm also going to be using my dv5t for school and I also will be a Computer Science Major.

Battery life shouldn't be a problem in class since most should have outlets. If not, it looks like the two battery method would be your only option. Running on "power saver" should also boost your battery life substantially.

Hey chaz quick question, u knw whn u said there is there overclocking room in 9600m-gt, I meant in my other post to post benchmarks when u have overclocked the 9600m-gt and which settings did u use.

Also i knw off the topic, but my previous dv5191ea had a fan prb, i got the fan changed but the prb came back within 2 weeks, is there any chances of the heat issue/problem to caus fan noises or probs in the future??

Thanks for all ur help, appreciated!!!

    clean Vista reinstall:

i read via "orev" 's thread that there are certain cases where the "abr tool" doesn't work for some unknown reason. that is what is accounting for those 58 cases where the clean reinstall instructions did not work for those 58 people.

may i ask if there are folks here who have experienced serious issues with their clean reinstall of Vista? it seems like something around 80% worked, and something like 20% didn't work.

    thx.

    Thank you. :)

Crysis has a built-in screenshotting feature, just press F12 and the pictures will be stored in My Games/Crysis/Screenshots.
    http://www.tweakguides.com/Crysis_9.html
I think it's for the touch controls as well, though I can't confirm.
I remember reading earlier in this thread that someone found a part number for a dv5 12-cell battery. It's unknown when HP will actually offer the battery though.

I'd recommend filling out the FAQ in our What Should I Buy forum anyway to make sure you get the right notebook.
I had that same problem with my Microsoft Bluetooth 5000 mouse when I first got my dv5t, but after the clean install, the problem disappeared . . .
I haven't tried the overclocking yet. The reason I think the 9600M-GT has some headroom is because it's built on a smaller process than the 8600M-GT, and some 8600M-GT owners are getting overclocks higher than the stock clocks of the 9600M-GT.

Not sure about the long-term problems . . . the notebook hasn't even been in owner's hands for more than a month.

Well, if I remove the battery, then I lose my backup power...
I'm still having a tough time deciding what to do.
If I leave the battery in:
    - I have a power backup in case there's a power outage.
    - I'd feel safer about using write caching
    - (HP also recommends to leave the battery in)

If I take the battery out:
    - I might keep my battery living a little longer for when I actually need it
    - I would assume the laptop would be a little cooler also since there's no heat coming from the battery.

I don't know what to do...

So what's the best way to get the fingerprint reader to work with Firefox?

    Thanks

Your system is similar to mine. Just a note about the RAM. Coming from
XP Pro, where 2GB is a lot, I've noticed that Vista is an absolute resource
pig. After I got my dv5t, I cleaned out tons of crap, and streamlined it
the best I could. With just the OS running, with AVG in the background,
Vista is eating up 988MB of RAM. The only way I can reduce the usage
is to eliminate AVG, which isn't practical.

I may end up going with 4GB later on, just so I have some in reserve.
Just for comparison purposes, I fired up my P4 XP Pro desktop and
found that, even with AVG running, RAM usage was less than 300MB.

Bottom line is, like me, you'll probably want to upgrade the RAM.

I tried using FingerFox.. I can't even get it to install. BUT.. I think even better, the ie tab add-in works awesome. I only set log-in pages to open with the ie tab... then the fingerprint reader works perfectly.. again.. only the log-in page of the website.

I didn't even know 'til just last night that the fingerprint reader even worked with a browser/webpage! I thought it was only for the windows logon! Found out in a different thread.

So I just got done doing some Vista tweaks.

I must say, I am loving this laptop so far. :) I didn't bother with the clean install, but by doing some tweaks I can see a performance difference, and a boot-up/shut-down difference.

AVG is also a hog too. I would recommend you go with ESET NOD32 anti-virus. Very small footprint and works great. 30 day trial and then an annual subscription.

I got a question for ya Chaz. :)

I currently have my battery taken out. I drained it down to 70% and took it out like you mentioned a few pages back. Put it in some plastic (which it came in), and have it in my computer drawer. Now, because there is an opening on the bottom of my laptop, with some prongs visible (where battery connects) can anything be damaged, or should I not worry?

Thanks, Cable.tac. I tried four, free, anti-virus programs and AVG took the least resources. However, it used to be a lot leaner and meaner, before it got to version 8. I *do* like the idea of NOD32 having a small footprint. I'll give it a trial and see how it goes.

Ok, here is an esata update. After doing a clean Vista 64 install and loading the Intel inf chipset drivers, and the Intel matrix storage manager sata drivers, the esata port works with a Vantec NexStar 3 external hard drive enclosure. Here is the problem I am still having and I would love for other people to test it. The usb port which is combined in the same port as the esata does not work with the Vantec enclosure. In fact I have tried two vantec enclosures in this usb portion of the combo plug and neither works. Oddly though, when I plug in a card reader or external hub to this port, they work fine. Only hard drive enclosures arent working. Has anyone else tried a hard drive in the usb portion of the usb/esata port? Thanks

Does anyone know if there is any 'pre-built' model with WSXGA and 9600GT?
I am not at US so I have to pass the right model to the shop so they can bring it to brazil.
I´ve seen some models with dv5-10XX
