I did a clean install. Did anyone reinstall the ProtectSmart drivers? Just wondering.

Also, Chaz, does the PowerMizer off or on result in lower GPU temperatures? I was confused by your answer to the question above. Thanks.

I would guess yes, but you can never really know until you see where it lands next. My next landing after AK occurred in the middle of the night, but landed pretty close to my house.

He said yes, it does result in a lower GPU temp, and it should be on by default.

The reason I was confused was because the question to Chaz was written as:

"hey chaz, i have been reading on the forums that switching off the powermizer setting on vista has resulted in lower gpu temp for some people, have u tried disabling powermizer??"

    Hi folks,

I did a clean install of Vista x64 (I have a retail copy of Ultimate that I used).

However, I forgot to copy the QuickPlay software. So it is now stuck somewhere on the recovery disk where I don't have access to it.

I have installed the Quick Launch button drivers and the QuickTouch software, but they don't include QuickPlay. So here are my questions:

    1. Given that you cannot download QuickPlay from HP, is the only way to get it back to re-install from the recovery partition, copy it and then do another clean install?
    2. Can you assign the quick launch buttons to something else like Windows Media Player?

Also, I just wanted to make sure about something -- when you use the quick launch buttons to turn the volume up or down or something, do you hear a noise through the speaker that, to me, illustrates that you pressed a quick launch button? Just like a little click through the speaker.

I did, and I have no flex.

As for how to fix it . . . it's a matter of what is under the keyboard, and what yours is missing. It sounds like yours doesn't have a support or something under that area.

I'm planning to buy a dv5t after alot of research, it looks like a great machine. I've got my configuration pretty much figured out except for the CPU, T9400 vs. P8600.

From what I understand I'm not looking at a huge difference in battery life (already kind of eh from the 9600M), but the 9400 has a 10W bigger heat output. This laptop is going to be replacing my aging desktop, and while I'm mostly going to be using it for school and in class, I do game and do video editing/encoding (Dvdflick).

Does the T9400 run significantly hotter than the P8600? I just don't want a situation where the temps are sky high and cause a problem down the road.

I have had my dv5t since Monday. Noticed today that the left speaker grill/panel is slightly raised, on the inner bottom corner, where the speaker panel meets the lower panel. It is right next to the tab key. I noticed a couple other people who have noticed this defect (if that's what it is). I'm interested in knowing how many people have this issue?

I hate to be picky, but if I'm going to be looking at an otherwise very nice looking laptop, I want it to be perfect! Honestly, I might not have noticed it for another month or beyond, but now that I have, it's ALL I can see!

I spoke to HP (which was a hassle: they disconnected me once, and once I got them on the phone it was scratchy on their end). They said that since it's within the time limit, I can return it if it's a defect - and then WAIT for a new one to be built [BTW-I think it's great that everyone has been tweeking on the FedEx status page to see where their laptop is. Mine was on it's way from Idianappolis to San Diego, then got diverted BACK to Memphis because they screwed up the customs release somehow, and it STILL made it to me a day early. My sister was laughing at me because I checked the site from my cell phone like every hour, I'm glad I'm not the only one!]. OR I can have them charge me again, for a new notebook, and then I can send the old one (the one I have now, with the defect), back to them. Either way, it seems like a pain in the rear! If more than a few people say they have the same defect, I may learn to accept it...I guess!

Also, my left shift key, two keys below the speaker grill defect, has a slight 'click' to it, that none of the other keys have. It only happens about half the time, like the key is not sitting quite right. If I'm the only one with this problem, I may use it as an excuse to exchange for a new one. I want to be completely satisfied with the notebook, if I'm going to have it for a long time!

    Thanks...
    -Megan

Idk... it seems to push down about 1 cm maybe less.. Its not a big problem.. If anyone else notices a little flex all the way to the left of the keyboard let me know.

    Thanks

WAIT A MINUTE... I notice the speaker grill on the left is very slightly lifted... which is right near and the only spot where the keyboard flexes..... hmmm. Megan put pressure on your caps and tab button and let me know if your keyboard pushes down a flexes slightly.. I think that maybe the problem. Chaz check if your speaker grill is exactly flush with laptop like the right side is.

The new 45nm Penryn processors which we are talking about use less power and create less heat than the former generation core duo's already. The T9400 has 3mb more cache on chip and is going to need slightly more power to run. It's a bit of hair splitting. You will be happy either way- slightly less power usage with the p8600, or a bit more performance with the T9400.

Steve - There is a very small, tiny, amount of flex on tab key, right next to raised speaker grill. When I spoke to HP, they passed me around to customer service, to orders...without really giving me the chance to ask if anyone else had called in with this problem, or ask if it was even an ACTUAL defect, or if the grill HAS to be raised this way, because it's a custom configuration...

If you look, on both sides of the keyboard, where the speaker grill meets the rest of the lower panel, there is a little black notch sticking out, on the left side, it's directly to the left of the tab key, and under the speaker grill. There's one on the right side too, directly to the right of the "pg up" key. They're in the small gap between the edge of the keyboard and the speaker grill. You may have to look with a flashlight. Honestly, maybe I'm just sleepy, but the left one looks just a little bit larger, or maybe just more prominent than the right.

I've got to guess (and I have absolutely no education on this, so it's definitely a guess), that obviously it's not supposed to be like that, but maybe it has to be like that, becuase of the configuration, sort of a necessary evil. If that's the case, I'll think of it as a badge of...well...geekness...I guess - "hah, look how much cool stuff is in my laptop, HP couldn't even get it all to fit!!"

However, the clicky shift key is starting to bother me!! It's like it's not sitting correctly. When you push it, it goes down, then if you push more, it clicks down just a tiny bit more, but in a tiny upward direction. None of the other keys do that. Maybe I'm just obsessing.

My dv5z that I returned on the second day last week had the same issue. I'll see if my dv5t that'll arrive in about 3-4 days will have that
I wonder if removing and replugging the keyboard/top cover firmly would solve the problem, but yes it may not worth it.

I just got my dv5t today and so far, I'm loving it. Anyone know how to access the SMART readings from the hard drive? I have Vista Premium 64bit and a Hitachi 250GB 5400RPM Hard drive. I tried HD Tune and Speed fan but so far, no go. Also, does anyone know of good programs to monitor CPU, GPU, and HD temp as well as battery wear? I don't think Notebook Hardware Control supports 64 bit. Maybe I should have gotten 32 bit...

When editing video, a 7200rpm drive is always recommended. My previous pc had 2 hard drives. One was 5400rpm, and one was 7200rpm, I could barely edit video on the 5400rpm because it was so laggy and delayed. An upgrade to 4gb of ram would also be extremely beneficial.

    Hey, quick question:
what do you think is the optimum partition size for the Vista system itself?

Btw I'm ordering my dv5 next week and I'm very excited :D (as every potential new owner of this lappy i guess). Sadly the prices in Poland aren't as good as in the US + preconfigured models :p Anyway a good laptop.

well its safe to have like (according to me) 30-40gb for vista itself, coz i have seen the "windows" folder to be around 8-9gb on a fresh vista install.

Congrats to you, and everyone else who placed their orders. :) Good times!
That's correct, the difference in battery life will not be that significant. I'm not sure about the heat though . . . the CPU does run warmer, but isn't overheating. If you're encoding stuff, then the faster CPU is probably worth it.
I notice that my left side grill is not completely flush as the right side is; I haven't noticed it up until now.

I don't have the Shift key issue however.

Were you able to use a coupon code or anything when you ordered from Costco? Their default warranty is definitely a lot better, that's for sure.

If you look at the pics in your review, it looks like the grill isn't matched up. I assumed it was the angle of the photo.

Okay I took pictures, they arent the best quality b\c I took them with my 1.3 mp camera on my cell phone. The first picture is the left side where it is slightly raised and not flush. I think this is causing the very small key board flex on the left side. Although my shift key does not click when I push it, it sounds like every other key...

Can anyone recommend a virus program for Vista 64bit? New laptop arives today and I realized I dont have any virus protection.

FYI, my estimated build date was 8/21 and it arrived on 8/21 so they are pretty conservative in thier estimates.

    Thanks!

Stupid question, but, what the heck...

The dv5t doesn't have a button to open the computer right? You know some have a little button you press when the computer is closed in order to lift the monitor so you can see it. I noticed with the dv5t, you just lift. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a latch or something.

    Thanks.

I got my dv5t yesterday and I'm very happy with it, except for 2 things:

    1) I can't get Lightscribe to work. I downloaded and installed latest drivers from lightscribe.com, using Verbatim disks - tried 3 disks with the same result: I get an error message from the LS software when trying to burn the image that "media is not recognized". I will try to call HP support later today and see if they can help.

    2) The incredible amount of bloatware. Why does HP alone have to have 12 different software packages? Couldn't they put all their support/manuals/maintenance stuff under ONE package. I wanted to avoid a full clean install but it looks like I'll have to spend this weekend doing that.

Otherwise the machine rocks. I ran Crysis Demo on it and it ran very smoothly at medium settings. My main game is WorldofWarcraft though and I was able to max out all settings and run it at full res. and I got 55 fps. Very nice.

    My config is:
    HP Pavilion dv5t - Vista (64-bit)/ Intel C2D P8600 (2.4 GHz)/ 15.4" WSXGA+ High-Definition Display (1680 x 1050)/ 4GB DDR2 Ram, 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT/ 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive/ Webcam / Intel WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth/ Lightscribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW.

I was incorrect in a previous post. My keyboard does have a slight flex on the left side as you report. It doesn't hurt the response, but it is there. I have the slightly raised area on the left side as well. I'm thinking it is probably not a defect, but maybe a slight design flaw.

My first Lightscribe drive wouldn't work with verbatim cd's at all. HP sent me a new drive, same issue, other brands, no problem.

I didn't even bother getting the lightscribe drive on my dv5t since I never used it.

Without the dedicated card, it runs very cool. If you don't need the dedicated video card, don't get it. ;)
The lid mechanism is magnetic - it's one of the latest trends in the notebook industry.

Yes. And I had the impression that Verbatim disks were some of the more compatible Lightscribe disks out there...

... so apparently I was wrong. Which sucks because I was really looking forward to using this feature. I guess I'll stop by Fry's tonight and pick another brand to test with.

On a side note, I found this article about how oobe works. I'm going to login as administrator and clean up that entire oobe directory structure. Hopefully that will get rid of all the junk. I really don't want to do a full clean install

There is no way I'm doing the clean install thing - you guys are cool to do stuff like that..just not for me. I like the idea of the PC Decrapifier that I read in the earlier post.. is there any reason NOT to do this??

when you order a brand new car, how about you get it with the options that i picked out? instead of being 'stuck' with something that the company sets for you (which, coincidentally, leads to degradation of system performance), there is a lot to gain from reinstalling from scratch.

the thing about the decrapifier - which is a great name btw - it will have to be written per pc which sort of sucks. the crap installed on my dv7t may not be the same as the crap installed on your dv5t.

downside is that installing from scratch (as a noob) requires a lot of knowledge about PCs so many ppl rule that out. the one thing i would reccommend is to maybe even hire someone to backup your data/music/whatever and have them reinstall from scratch. yeah, you'll be paying them, but the benefits of a totally clean system are totally worth it.

Chaz I noticed that your index score was 4.8, which mine was also until
I updated it and the desktop preformance for windows aero dropped to 4.7. Update yours and see if it does the same thing... I updated after changing drivers so I just wanna make sure it will happen for everyone.

    Thanks

Nothing horrible will happen, I don't think.

If you register, you will get any critical notices about your machine (recall, for example). And it may be easier when you call support to have your machine registered.

Yes- I understood your comment and responded accordingly. This is what I'm using.

What I meant by Verbatim being a more compatible brand is that while researching this issue last night I found a lot of people having issues with various brands of media with Lightscribe. But most recommended using Verbatim disks (some even over the HP branded one) to get it to work. So I assumed that the problem is not with the disks.

Once I get a different brand today and try it, I'll find out for sure.
