I was wondering if anyone knows of any picture diagrams for replacing the ram in this machine. I got the 4 gig newegg/ocz deal, and after driving to 3 stores I finally found a mini screwdriver to let me get the back plate off.

When I got the plate off, however, thew ram is very tightly placed inside the machine. I seem to recall someone saying that the ram should pop up when the slot is taken off (though maybe I am remembering that wrong). Given that I have fried an entire computer before in the past trying to insert ram, I was wondering if anyone knew of a step by step directions site?

So are the mouse buttons on the dv5t supposed to be kind of loud? ... I mean I notice the click when I press them; unlike my MacBook Pro where the click is somewhat quiet.

Hey has anyone noticed "keyboard flex" on the left side (shift, caps, tab)of the dv5t keyboard when you apply a little pressure on the keys.

Try it and let me know if the left side of the keyboard pushes down a little when you apply pressure b\c mine flexes a little bit.

    Thanks guys :)

Just wondering, but has anyone who ordered a system using the live.com cashback link gotten their `cashback?'

I ordered on the 11th, got my computer today (which is wonderful!), but my cashback account still shows nothing. I sent them an e-mail on monday about it, and then again this morning, but haven't heard anything back. =(

Hey, I ordered my dv5t on August 12th and estimated build date was 21st. To my surprise, it was shipping yesterday morning, 2 days earlier, which was awesome. Now after heavily watching the FedEx tracker, it is in Anchorage, AK. I am wondering if it will arrive tomorrow even though estimated delivery is on friday by 10:30 am. I have to know since i will be at school during those times i'm going to ask someone to stay home.

No! I wrote about this earlier. We are in a bad way. I wrote them because I hadn't seen my 5% cash back pending in my account. They replied and initially put the money in my account as pending. Then 1/2 hour later, they took it away!! :)

Apparantly there is a rule in the Terms of Service (17g to be exact) says that you can't get cash back if you use coupons. I used the $400 off coupon. The sucky thing is that Ebates and Fatwallet also offer 5% and they don't care if you use coupons. The stupid thing is that it really shouldn't matter whether you use a coupon or not because they give you the cashback based upon the final price (before taxes and shipping). So who cares if you use a coupon.

Anyway, I wrote them again basically asking them to make an exception in this case, but I haven't heard back.

It sucks. That is like $40+ I may not get back. :(

R4000, thanks for the link. I had a bit of trouble, as my fat fingers not only made it difficult to get the clamps off, but at one point one of the clamps wedged my fingernail against the ram, and I almost couldn't get it out (lol..imagine calling 911 over that!). Anywho, I put both chips in, and it showed 2 gigs. However, I felt like the top chip wasn't seated too well before I ever turned it on, so I took the top chip out and put it back in again, and it showed 4 gigs. Hooray for not breaking new computers! Thanks again.

Hmm Kentucky is farther from Anchorage from California, so hopefully, i get it tomorrow... I'm not sure who will be home though :X. I'm out of the house by 7:50 A.M. My dad around 9:00 A.M but he doesn't speak english so i don't know how that would fare. Also, did you guys get any other notices after the arrival at Anchorage AK through FedEx tracking? So i can make sure it will be here by tomorrow?

    HI,
I ordered my DV5t and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. I ordered on August 17th and it says estimated ship date as August 22nd. The status is "In production" per the HP website. is this pretty accurate or is it sometimes earlier :) Thanks

Hey guys, was there a free printer (after mail-in) that I didn't choose? I don't want it.. but hey, if it's free.. I could've given it away or sold it. Seems like I saw that someone had chosen that in their config.

LOL on another note.. I know everyone is looking in detail at every bit of this new computer..so flaws will be found.. but as I read page 176, for about 10 seconds I was thinking.. "good feeling gone" .. only lasted 10 seconds :) Page 176 is behind me now lol

Sure the printer you get is "free". Not really though. You have to pay 70$ for it + tax then you're going to have to wait a couple of months for the money. If you don't need it, don't get it basically.

How long does it take to make the recovery disks?

That's a complete crock. On my previous order (late Saturday the 9th/early Sunday 10th) I not only used a coupon (the 5% off one), but my wife's APP account to make the purchase and the cashback (10% at the time!) came through within hours. Previous to _that_, I had ordered a Thinkpad T61 from Lenovo through live using a coupon and the cashback showed up. Then suddenly on monday the cashback drops to 5%, it dosen't show up and I don't hear anything. =(

I had a chat with the folks at Live Cashback and they are saying that HP denied the claim because we use the coupon. So maybe that is true, especially given your story about Lenovo. Live Cashback is doing more research for me, and maybe some compromise can be reached. The guy at Live Cashback was very kind. So we'll see. He said I should hear something in 48 hours or less.

    Hey Cable.tac,

I don't know about the system recovery disks before cleaning everything up, but besides CCleaner, there is also www.pcdecrapifier.com, www.revouninstaller.com, and www.zsoft.dk/index/software_details/4.

Also, check out this site - http://www.pcwintech.com/tools/CleanMem.html.

As to the integrity of these programs, I cannot attest. I plan on using them once my computer arrives.

Don't forget JPZSPORTS's guide on optimizing your computer either, and make sure to give him some props.

    Hope that helps!

Alrighty...after having the dv5t for a few hours, I thought I would add a few more odds and ends.

    1) Make sure you keep that wiping cloth handy...you will use it, A LOT :D.

    2) In case no one ever replied....to the person who wondered what the four little dots are next to the webcam at the top of the screen....those are lights that come on when the webcamera is on. I guess they are put there simply so that people don't forget their webcams are on  .

    3) Regarding heat and casual usage (web surfing, documents, etc), I really don't notice any major issues. True, the laptop does get a bit warm around where your palms rest, but not so warm as to be uncomfortable (and apparently a bit of heat is pretty common to a lot of laptops if I have read some various sites correctly). Also, given that my prior laptop literally got so hot as to make the computer stop working at times, I have to say that I really don't consider the temps so far to be problematic.

Next test, trying to run games!

(P.S.: I don't notice any flex on the left side of my keyboard. However, I have noticed that where the speaker grill meets the bottom laptop material (just left of the tab button), there is a slight bit of difference between the two pieces...as if they weren't fitted together just right. Maybe this is why I don't have the flex? (I think some people mentioned it dozens and dozens of pages ago))

May i ask if anyone noticed that their LEFT click button on the touch pad is higher than the RIGHT click button?

Thx in advance. i am hoping for a few opinions/observations before determining that mine is defective or ok.
    ===================================

that said, i spent the past two days "preparing" my new dv5t. testing for dead pixels, trying things out, etc. clean reinstall...

whew, this is quite a work out. it really has taken me two days! i'm not fully done yet.

tonight, hopefully, i'll do an Acronis image and then, i should be basically done.

Congrats to everyone who ordered! Feels nice to order a new machine. ;)
Hm. The spacebar squeak is something I've seen on other notebooks . . . I'd give it a week and see if it goes away. I'm not saying it's normal (it isn't) - it may just be a 'breaking in' thing.

The left touchpad gets warm on the dv5t, it's just the way it is. It's not dangerous.

Glad to hear you like your machine . . . it is quite a beast. Yours is basically maxed out.
It wasn't a 'bad' choice, no. Nobody ever complained about too much CPU power. ;) The T9400 is not the best value, but it won't hurt anything. The T9400 is around 10 - 15% faster than a P8400; that power could come in handy should you decide to do any heavy Photoshop or rendering work.
This is true - TDP != power consumption. I don't think there is too much of a difference in battery life between the two.
PowerMizer (the feature that lowers the clocks/voltages of the video card) is on by default I think. Yes it definitely results in lower temperatures.

I haven't installed the new PhysX drivers yet.
It looks great to me. I would stick with that config; you could save yourself a bit of money by downgrading to the base 802.11b/g wireless.
I think those four dots light up when the webcam is on, though I can't confirm . . . not using my HP notebook at the moment.
They are a bit loud, yes. You will definitely hear the click when you press them.
My keyboard is solid as a two-by four . . . no flex at all.

    What's your configuration?
I went with 32-bit because my iPod touch doesn't work with 64-bit. My desktop has a 64-bit OS so the laptop had to be 32.

I don't think it matters which one you go with. Just make sure all your devices have 64-bit drivers.

In answer to deleting the hp partition, I did. Made 60 gig for vista & programs and the rest for data. Doing my clean install now. I almost didn't do the recovery discs, as they took a long time. But, I played it safe. I'm glad to have it a day early and so far, I'm impressed with the laptop. It looks great and feels way more solid than the hp it is replacing (that I'm typing on now).

After the vista install, I'll do the drivers, take an image and see how it goes. I don't notice any flex in the keyboard. And yes, the mouse buttons are a bit loud.

I have the 9600 video card, and I am not noticing any kind of heat issue. It is warm, but just slightly warmer than the laptop I am on now, which uses integrated graphics.

No flex in my keyboard either. I'm loving the WSXGA+ display.

Regarding the "keyboard flex" situation, I am not feeling any flex at all. Its very sturdy.

I gave pressure to both the 'Caps key' and the 'page down' key on the right side (same line of keys as the 'caps'). No flex.
