Our laptops are together then!!! They are traveling buddies. Maybe we can get them together a year from now - you know, for a play date!

^ hahahaha, our laptops are bff's. i was thinking maybe they send them to alaska to cool them off before they start heating up at their new owners place.
LOL -
I cant do this currently because my dv5t is on the east coast and i am on the west and I want to check everything is functioning before I get paid not to send it in, but when I do I fully intend to try to get the $80 dollars are more.
In short, its not an official coupon code or anything like but a corporate policy (I suspect) to keep customers from switching specs on their laptop (because if you think about it, the only thing it costs us is time, where-as HP has to pay for shipping 4 times, rebuild, and find something to do with the old one, hence its in their interest that we keep our laptops)
Anyone can comment/confirm/deny my suspicion on this.
Hope that helps

i haven't gotten the laptop yet but do they still use that little tip that sticks out of the keyboard area so when you close the lid, the lid pushes that pin to turn off the screen?

BTW, I would just like to bring up 2 things since we are all getting the dv5t that has eSata and HDMI.
The first is the best eSata External Hard drives. Im a huge fan of external hard drives and one of the major selling points about the dv5t was the eSata port. Upon ordering my dv5t I set about looking for the best external eSata HD that I could find (I was looking for a TB around 200$) I would just like to share the fruits of my labor and get some feedback.
The first company I went to was Seagate and Western Digital (With the Mybooks line). Both are very wide spread and what I commonly think of when I think of quality HD's. Ironically enough I ran into an article that tested 5 seperate eSata HD's and both the Seagate and the Western Digital were at the bottom of the list. Turns out their eSata is frankly crap. They recommended a brand I'd never heard called Cavalry. Upon further research it seems that Cavalry not only has the best external eSata HD but the cheapest. I just ordered mine for 155 (no shipping or tax). Any thought/additions/incosistancies?
The second point was the HDMI. I have TV/monater that I use as a TV screen to watch movies and shows ive downloaded and again one of the major selling points of the dv5t was not only the HDMI but the ability to play movies (for guests) and be able to surf the web without any lag in the movie on the other screen.
Anyway, I started looking for HDMI cables and they're **** expensive (well monster and anything in a video store are). Again, after research I (and the loosing of my noob status as a nerd). You can get very good HDMI cables for pennies on the dollar. I found an american company called Blue Jean that actually stood up to Monster (when monster tried to get them to close down for alleged patent infringement). I was so proud and look at their price I ordered a 6ft. HDMI cable for under 10$ (half of that is shipping). They have higher stuff with the gold plating and all that jazz but nothing coming near Monster's exorbitant pricing.
Anyway thats the end of my rant. Hopefully we can start a discussion on the best accessories and other optimization (which has been covered quite well), and over the heat issue - which IMHO has been done to death.
-TF -
I think that's been done away with Kevin. I currently have a dv6000 series (dv6700t) and it does not have the lid tip/pin to mechanically depress. It uses magnetic detection.
-
ran COD4 Demo and tested,, it was REALLY smooth and no lag at all...
the graphic was amazing for both COD4 and Crysis, i wish i could calculate the FPS, but i don't know how to... anyway, i really like my dv5t now and it only reaches 75C highest with Zalman NC1000 cooler on.. -
so here we go. please note that i copied this from someone else's post and/or from hp.com's page (i simply cannot remember as i saved it for my own use):

Do all the dv5t's come with the media remote standard? When I was configuring I didn't see it as an option. Does it only come with the notebook if you ordered a TV tuner?
-
-
Oh, so you are *not* supposed to see on-screen displays on the 64-bit version of Vista. Hmmm...interesting. -
http://www.fraps.com/download.php -
Are you supposed to put the remote in the slot at the left side of the computer or something? -
Looking on Hp's website it seems they are temprarily not currently offering the tv tuner option on configuring the dv5t. They must must have ran out. Mine is on the way to me so no waiting.

Alright so on 3dmark06 i got a score of 3517 at standard resolution. This is my second dv5t and on my first one iwas able to get 4000. I did some of the tweaks from Les ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532 ) like disabling windows search indexing and others, and i currently use the 177.83 driver for 64-bit. What else can i do to improve my performance to what it was on my first dv5t... w/o doing a clean install. New driver maybe? I just dont get how two very similar laptops can have two different scores.

Sorry the long post.. but one more thing. Will it say "out for delivery" like UPS or is this it? Also, from googling..looks like it is common for them to sit all weekend, even close by..ugh

^ i know for ibm laptops, the program that actually makes the volume indicator appear is somewhere in the startup scripts. you can run msconfig and view everything that starts - it's most likely one of those programs.
the quick way to check is when you boot up, and the desktop shows, immediately press the volume buttons. does the indicator appear on the screen?
i would call HP and ask them about how to make that indicator appear, then when you have the name of the software, remove it from your startup.
with ibm, if you remove that software, your volume controls still work 100%, but the indicator doesnt appear - the effect you're looking for. -

Yet, why must that giant indicator be in the very CENTER of the LCD?!?? If one were viewing a video that is streamed, or youtube, etc, it effectively blocks your view of it for something like 10 seconds! How silly and counterproductive.
Any ideas/solutions would be most appreciated, esp "official solutions or official alternatives" as I am a bit wary of removing something so standard as it may have other deletarious effects either immediately or later.
Thx in advance. -

Well, I hope Vegas's sort facility is as fast as yours was. It said it got there at 3:35 am, so hopefully I'm on the same boat as you.

Hi,
As I continue to "play" with my dv5t, I am running across times where I want to get some verification:
1. The three lights on the front of it -- the hard drive, battery and power on light -- does the battery light stay on, bright, when the charger is plugged in for you? I thought that at one time it wasn't on when I had the charger plugged in, but lately it is on when it is plugged in. Thanks.
[Edit: Now the battery light actually turned off -- does it stay on for a bit and then turn off when the charger is plugged in???]
2. The DVD drive. I have had it the case a couple of times where I put a DVD in and it just "grinded" and nothing ever happened. I had to open and close it again to make things happen. Ever happen to you? -

Try 177.73 from www.laptopvideo2go.com
You should backup the swsetup folder on the dv5t's hard drive before you wipe it and do a clean install. Then you won't have to download any drivers.
My dv5t came by surprise. It was supposed to be delivered on a Wednesday, but it just showed up Tuesday morning.
2. Never happened to me, but then again I only used the drive two or three times. -
Does anyone know if its definitely supposed to be delivered by 10:30 AM?!!
OO I think I found it:

Wanna hear a funny story?
I received my dv5t at about 9:30 this morning. I was initially extremely impressed with FedEx (and HP) due to the speed at which I received it.
That changed when I opened it. They sent me the completely wrong notebook. They sent me a unit with 1280x800 display, 9200M GS, fingerprint reader, tv tuner, lightscribe drive, etc. So, after waiting on the phone for an hour, my correct notebook is being shipped by August 29. SIGH. MORE WAITING.
So, if someone ordered a 1280x800 9200M GS config and received a 1680x1050 9600M GT config, have fun, because you have my computer. =b -
My DV5t aptop arrived day before yesterday and I have been using it alot to find out pros and cons before 21 days are over
.
I have a IBM T60 thinkpad as well which is needless to say very very cool then DV5t. I noticed that its getting very hot from below especially where the mouse pad is that area is hotter then others. The palm rest area is very hot as well . I think they can change the type of plastic to not transfer heat on the surface above. Is it the same place where you guys are seeing more tempratures ? I am elivating the laptop for proper airflow. Not using a cooler right now but I have to buy one ( any suggestions please ? ) .
Apart from it getting hot!! hot !! hot !! everything else looks good . Performance is amazing screen clarity is beautiful. Webcam works amazing even in low light . Havnt played games on it yet.
I am using cable for TV Tuner and using windows media center for watching TV , the quality is very good. I am sharing the signal between tv and my laptop and it works super on it. Which software you guys using to watch tv ?
The fingerprint reader is very good , But i think they should deliever more software to make ultimate use of that technlogy . I was looking for a software which will lock files and folders via finger print rather then locking the whole computer ?? Any of you guys aware of such a software ?
The new Wireless cards is more faster ( faster response then what I observe in T60 in simple web surfing ) .
I read somewhere that DV5t has accelerometer in it for preventing hard disk . Is there any software available to make use of that or to test it ? Something what most of you guys must see in apple ipod touch ...
Guys will appreciate if someone can suggest what notebook cooler ya all are using and from where to buy it . Also if anyother software for fingerprint reader is available .

I'm actually debating getting the DV5t w/ a 9600m GT card in it. Would you say it's worth $50 more in price over another system I found w/ a ATI HD 2600 w/ 512mb ddr3 ram? This other system also has 4gb instead of the 2gb system ram I configed the DV5t at. Thoughts?
