Hey - so I have had the computer for a few hours. Its sweet. However, I must admit I have run into many problems already and I am frustrated !! So first wireless internet will NOT connect. Access: Local only ?!! Hooking up an ethernet cord for some reason messed up my frieinds wireless and they get "Another computer using same IP address as this one" now. Then - I figure I will try to update windows first because that might fix the internet not connecting. But windows update stays stuck at downloading updates 0% and "preparing to install" It has never changed. I dont know what to do at this point but I also had to do a couple force shutdowns on IE and windows explorer that were getting stuck when I was messing with the WLAN settings. Anyone else figure out how to get their internet working?? Or windows update??

It shouldn't take up CPU; lots of gadgets will take up more memory, but that shouldn't be an issue anyway. Have as many gadgets as you want.
Ah - ok, that game should be able to run on even an Intel GMA graphics chip, as the game uses Macromedia Shockwave player from within an Internet browser. Maybe Shockwave isn't compatible with 64-bit? Check on that. As far as I can tell, that is the only piece of software you need to play the game.
Could you give us a picture or more thorough description of the problem?
For the record, that's a problem with OS or router, not the laptop itself. As for the fix - check our Networking & Wireless forum for solutions. If you don't see something that helps you, just make a new thread there. You're basically guaranteed to get your problems fixed on these forums. ;)

Your Windows Updates didn't work since your computer isn't connected to the Internet. "Local Access" means that you can't get out the Internet.

Thanks Chaz - I will try that forum. I even called Belkin and of course they just went through standard protocol and then said to call the vendor. O and what sucks is that I actually did connect to the internet by plugging in an ethernet cord and that is when the Windows Update didnt work. Thats why I am so frustrated right now.

Alright so I finally got a clean install done on my new dv5t and used it for the last 5 hours. It was good for awhile but now its going downhill. I found two dead pixels and I've never had any dead pixels. Of course that isn't hp's fault but its dissapointing. Then I played TF2 for an hour. I can barely keep my hand on the laptop because the area on the left side right by the keyboard is so hot. Then I felt the bottom of the laptop and almost had to go to the E.R.

Got my laptop yesturday, works great so far.

I got it with 3 gigs but may want to upgrade to 4. Since it comes with a 2gig X 1 gig, I would only need to get one 2 gig chip. What kind do I get?? i know there are different speeds and what not. I guess my question is what kind the DV5T come with so I can buy the same to match. Also, how hard would be to install on my own?

Off topic, but how do I remove the newbie under my name??? Could not find it in options.

    Thanks in advance.

well from what i heard, and i own 1280x800 display, lower resolution is better if you don't have any difficult time reading small text.. cuz i have bad eye so i can't really see if it's small... i actually like mine better than higher resolution one..
And just let you know, T9400 generates more heat and electricity usage than P8600, i think.. that's what i heard, too lol...

Received my Zalman NC2000 cooler today. It's so quiet and works well. My laptop is running cooler now. Played about an hour of Crysis and my GPU temps went up to 64 C (yes I know that's still quite warm but it was worse without the cooler on). At idle now for the last 10 minutes, the temp went down to 49 C. I'm using HWMonitor_64.

I have the same problem where sometimes it will say"Local and internet" and sometimes it will say "local only" but when it says local only the internet still works...weird... Ive checked online for about 30 min. on how to fix and I cant find anything... Maybe it has to do with vista 64-bit compatability? ... If anyone has a solution please let me know!
    Thanks :)

I like the higher res. everything looks sharper and if you have a harder time seeing theres an option on the bootom right of internet explorer to change the zoom level to make words and images larger.

I believe you would need matching specs to continue to have dual channel...I know some dekstop mother boards will dual channel the first say 512 MB Ram if you had a 512 and a 1 GB chip

I think you to reach a certain number of posts before newbie goes away

It doesn't have anything to do with 64-bit. The notebook I received erroneously was 32-bit and I couldn't use windows update either. It was just stuck permanently and wouldn't download. I couldn't find out why. I do not share the network issue though.

I'm wondering if I should jump in and buy the Zalman cooler. I put up a couple of 3D screen savers and let them run for a couple of minutes, and my GPU got up to 88 C. I don't think I'll do much gaming, but I want to be safe. the HD gets a little zesty at times too. I'm currently doing an install and I'm seeing about 48 C.

My video card idles at 52 C without a cooler, just for comparison. Could you also provide your HD and CPU temps as well? I'm getting 40/36 for core 0 and 1 and 50 C for the HD during average surfing usage. I'm on a table btw.

After much reading, I finally took the plunge as well:

HP Pavilion Entertainment dv5t customizable Notebook PC
-Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    -Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz)
    -15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
-FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    -512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
-FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    -Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    -HP Color Matching Keyboard
    -Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
    -No Modem
-LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
    -No TV Tuner w/remote control
-High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    -Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
-HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
-2-year HP Pick Up and Return Extended Service Plan for HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario Notebook PCs

Also went to Newegg and purchased:
    -OCZ 4GB DDR2 800 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251
-320GB Seagate SATA 3.0 7200 RPM HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148336 (This drive has a fall sensor)

I plan to do a clean install on the new HDD and leave the one that comes with it as is.

I decided to go with the P8600 chip because of the discussion here (cooler, less power consumption, only an approximate 4% performance increase).

I just need to find a good cooler. I know many of you have chosen to use the Zalman, but I'd like to know how well it works for those of us who actually use the laptop on our laps, on the bed, on the floor, etc. If I'm traveling this is where I'll use my laptop, not on a desk. From looking at pictures of the Zalman, it looks as though the airflow would be blocked by using it this way. In addition, since I'll be traveling, I'll need a cooler that can be transported easily. Any ideas?

My next purchase for it will be a Bluetooth mouse and a power kit to be able to use it in the car. Haven't looked into those items well enough yet to make a good choice, but I do recall some of you having problems with the MS Bluetooth mouse at one point.

Caeric, I don't think the Zalman coolers are meant to be used on your lap. It will restrict the airflow since air is being sucked from the bottom. You would need to get a hard pad underneath and then your cooler.

Wifi, after a cold bootup and waiting 10 minutes while listening to media player, here are my readings (laptop on desk):

Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo hardware monitor
    Temperature sensor 0 40°C (104°F) [0x41] (core #0)
    Temperature sensor 1 38°C (100°F) [0x43] (core #1)

    GeForce 9600M GT hardware monitor
    Temperature sensor 0 43°C (109°F) [0x2B] (GPU Core)

    HDD monitor
    Temperature sensor 0 34°C (93°F) [0x22] (HDD)

This is after an hour of playing Crysis:

Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo hardware monitor
    Temperature sensor 0 52°C (125°F) [0x35] (core #0)
    Temperature sensor 1 54°C (129°F) [0x33] (core #1)

    GeForce 9600M GT hardware monitor
    Temperature sensor 0 71°C (159°F) [0x47] (GPU Core)

    Temperature sensor 0 38°C (100°F) [0x26] (HDD)

I know this isn't a graphics prob thread and I really don't necessarily care about this particular game..but I guess I'm just wondering if the dv5t is at fault..or is it having 64-bit. All I know is why would my 6700t do ANYthing better than my dv5t with much better specs.. I've searched and it seems that shockwave is supposed to work with 64-bit, so I don't THINK that is the problem Chaz..not sure though. Also..it has the same weird graphic glitches in Firefox AND Internet Explorer..no difference. I'm calling about the (IMO) smashed looking speaker lineup prob in a little bit.

Don't hate me, but overall I'm not impressed with the dv5t..maybe it's 'cause I used the 6700t. Man, even as I type I notice the A key is making a clicky sound..I just tried pushing it a couple more times and it's clearly not seated right..

I have some screenshots of the graphical-weirdness, but don't know how to show you them. If you're interested in helping me, I could send them over aim?

One more thing..the mouse button is hard enough to push my finger is feeling tired lol.. Yes, I ordered a mouse.. I could settle with this.. but I don't like the consumer settling thing...my $.02

If you want to show a screen shot do this: take the screen shot with the print screen button, then open up paint and press ctrl v, abd save it in your picture folder. Then on this website press reply and then press the little paper clip... on the new window that pops up click browse and find the screen shot you took on my pictures, then upload it, finally just submit the reply and your all set.

You wouldn't believe how long it's taking me on the phone with hp :( I'm calling to ask about the misaligned speaker grill thing. One rep wanted to have mine fixed. I told him I just got it a day ago..I don't want my laptop fixed.. but I was hesitant to exchange 'cause I don't want to get one with the same issue. He said he hasn't had even one person complain about this issue. Another rep offered me $80 refund..but when she found out that I already had one coming (because of me wanting to reconfigure)..she checked into it and told me that she can't give me a separate refund for this issue.. ugh..been waiting for 10 mins for a different person..the comp just hung up on me

The screen resolution is personal preference; I like high-res for some of the reasons mentioned - sharper images, less scrolling, and more screen real estate.
You would need to do a clean install to repartition the drive; see the clean install guide stickied at the top of this forum.
Hm . . . those look like rendering problems. Try running some other 3D game and see if you get the same sort of problems. That way we can figure out whether it is the game you are playing or the computer.

Rather than doing a complete reinstall, you can use the HP recovery manager. After you burn a set of recovery discs, there is a menu selection to remove the recovery partition. Then you will only have a C: partition left. Be sure and make the recovery discs before you delete this partition. HP does not include recovery discs with their laptops. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I figured the Zalman cooler wouldn't be good for me. I might end up just going with a cheapo Targus Chillhub... at least it pulls the air in the correct direction, is easily transported and I can use it in my lap. We'll see.

    Download ATI Tool:
    http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/
Install it, ignore all the driver warnings, and run it. Click 'Scan for artifacts' and see if it finds anything over a ten minute period (just exit after ten minutes).

It won't look like it's doing anything, but it is actually stressing the GPU extremely hard. :)

No doubt. This is the first HP computer I've bought, and this has been literally a nightmare for me. I purchased mine on August 14 and received the completely wrong notebook on August 22. I called and told them they sent me the wrong notebook and after an hour and a half on the phone, they finally agreed that I was competent enough to be able to tell that they sent me a notebook with the wrong specifications. Mind you, this was after I spoke to three people (two of which spoke with a heavy indian accent) and outlined what happened in very clear terms. All they could say was "that's strange, what does it say in system properties? Do you want to speak to someone who can walk you through the process to make sure that we sent you the wrong computer?" I wanted to pull my hair out. I said, look, I know what I'm talking about. It says there's a 9200M GS in my device manager; I paid for a 9600M GT. The computer's running 1280x800 resolution. And there's a fingerprint reader and a lightscribe drive -- I ordered neither one of those. I explained this like ten times.

The worst part? I'm checking my order status and the exchange notebook they're sending me (the one I ORDERED IN THE FIRST PLACE) is priced at over $300 more than the one I bought on August 14. Why? Because the promo code I used no longer works. The customer service agent noticed this, and said that I'll be temporarily charged with the difference (WHY?), but that it'll be refunded. Color me skeptical. I bet that they charge me an additional $1300 without refunding the original $950 I paid, and then don't give me the difference back. Which is what happened to someone a few pages back. Which means I'd have to call again and deal with them and probably explain the whole thing over again.

We'll see what happens, but I'll be **VERY ANGRY** if they tie up over 2000 dollars for a notebook I paid 950 for and should have received already. The worst part is they refuse to offer me any kind of compensation past the 2 day business shipping they're using for my next notebook.

    "Award winning service" is laughable.

Got my laptop on Friday - 2.4 processor, 3 gb ram, 9600 nvidia card, 32 bit vista.
Returning it within couple of days. Problem: touchpad and keyboards are really hot within 10 minutes of using it, no gaming done. Tech support stated probably something wrong within the video card.

Okay, I'll let you know what it finds.. here is a screenshot of the 6700t (x3100 igma) .. see how it looks as it should

    ***update
FINALLY after all these reps transferred me to any other rep in creation.. a supervisor said..oh.. you need to talk to hp shopping and just tell them you need a replacement. You don't want a computer with a defect (the speaker misaligned).. LOL I told him that his reps should've known that and he agreed. Soooooo.. they are sending me a new laptop 9/2 build date... and I am sending this one back after I get it.. problem hopefully solved. I think my misalignment problem is worse than some of yours.. btw.. one rep was trying to get me to send it to be fixed.. yeah rrrrrright.. I told him I didn't want a fixed computer just yet after one day .. any..
Oh..the touchpad buttons are growing on me.. I do think they are too stiff.. but after using the 6700t again that's here..the 6700's really are too loose..they jiggle... I'm really liking the dv5t.. not as much as I thought I would.. but I am :) :)
Ohh.. and same thing here..she is going to credit back my $400 coupon thing after the computer ships.. she better!
The real bummer is.. she asked me if I wanted to change any configuration.. if the tuner was still an option, I would have gotten the 2 gb ram and the tv tuner.. oh well :)

I think I have at least 2 dead pixels too. Not sure if it's a dead pixel or just a stuck pixel. There is a difference. Just noticed it today when I had a white background. So disappointing.....not sure what I'm going to do. Sorry to hear about your trouble.

    Hello everyone.
First, I'd like to tell everyone how I ended up here in this wonderful forum of fellow dv5t owners:

Let us first begin with the first notebook I purchased....a compaq (get all the laughs out now please)....Pretty much the thing died within 3 months of me owning it. It was pretty tragic after sending it in 3 times for the same video card issues and LCD failure. I suppose HP took sympathy upon me for their severe inconvience on their part and upgraded me to a pavillion dv6700z. Now this notebook lasted a little longer. Unfortunately....it too suffered the same fate as it's older brother and failed within 5 months of ownership. The motherboard, heatsink fan, thermal pad, and charging power brick literally burned out. WOW! I know.....This was also sent in 3 times for repair. Having left me with a SUPER bitter taste in my mouth, HP decided to replace this notebook yet a 3rd time....With the dv5t. And that's how I ended up here. I have had the chance to read this forum since the day they placed my order for mine to be custom built and I am pleased to say that this notebook looks pretty solid. 3rd time a charm? I certainly hope so. At least they are trying to fix it the situation. Feel free to comment and I hope to speak with you all soon. Take care ;)

Oh yeah, here are the specs:
    windows vista home premium 32-bit
2.0 intel core 2 duo processor
    250GB Hard Drive
    15.4 inch Brightview
    3GB Ram
    256GB NIVIDIA GeForce 9200M
    Intel WiFi 5100AGN
6 cell high capacity lithium ion battery
    webcam
    Lightscribe 8x cd/dvd

Wow man, I sympathize with you. I would've long went with another company by now. Some how, I am one of the lucky ones with a fully functional computer. I'm waiting to see what ends up not working, as I have no way to test HDMI or eSATA right now.

Just ran a pixel tester and sure enough, there are about 5 dead pixels. Uggghhh! Going to call HP now to order a new laptop. Anyone else have this issue?

Is it possible to arrange a return via chat, or must you spend endless hours on the phone? I'm considering returning my dv5z, and after reading these posts, would much rather avoid calling, if at all possible.

Yes, it's a visual check. Set your background to a solid white color. Clean your display with a microfiber towel and then look to see if you have any black dots. They are small. Mine are clustered around the bottom right corner. You can also see them with a red or blue solid background.
