Is it mainly the bottom that gets hot while gaming? Does the top where you have your wrist get hot too?

For those of you who ordered your laptop previously... I'd recommend configuring your system online again and calling up HP and requesting the price protection. I'm getting $172.51 back since they decided to throw in the $100 rebate and all the free upgrades. Check http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/terms.do under "prices, taxes, fees" for more info.

hi, i ordered a dv5t myself. it's coming soon. but i find it really funny how there were sooo many negative comments about this laptop, and as soon as one positive one comes out, everyone who was worried is like, "Oh whew, I'm glad that's all over. I'm not so worried now." It's like you guys are hoping so much that the negative comments are just rare cases of bad luck, and the guy who had it good is the majority, lol. i mean i'm glad that at least one person had it good, but still, lifting up the back of the laptop to improve airflow? Come on! I'm gonna have to get a damn laptop cooler, when I just spent an x amount of dollars, totally squeezing my budget to a pulp... I still love you dv5t, but you don't match my expectations for the perfect budget gaming laptop.

haha i know what you mean man, besides finding out that the laptop's prone to getting really really hot, it's perfect. At least in my opinion, the options, the styling and everything is exactly what I wanted in a notebook. I'll feel a lot better even knowing if the laptop (without cooler) will stabilize at 90c or so. Even though it's a high GPU temp, if it doesn't get higher and it's not really dangerous enough to ruin the notebook, I won't have a problem with that high temperature anyways.

Try raising the back of the notebook up a half inch, it should help you out. Your temperatures are not dangerous, but they could be lower.
Yes definitely configure your laptop again if you already got it/ordered it . . . I did on Monday, and got $100 back.
It's like the Apple logo, yes, but brighter and it is very cool. I will see if I can get some pictures of it in the dark for the review.
I feel like I'm spamming with this post (and I am), but see my post 244:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3695508&postcount=244
Temps are low 80*C range if you raise the back up.

Again, the dv5z received a thumbs-up from our editorial team:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=270195
It is nearly identical to the dv5t, save for the internal components.

Yes, don't know why it wouldn't be true. Vista x86 and x64 are the same SKU. I believe if you use the re-format guide on this forum to backup and restore your activation files you shouldn't even need to contact Microsoft or anything. Chances are even if you re-format and re-install the same version you'll have to contact MS. I've not tried it so I'm not 100% but I'm extremely familiar with Vista activation (I dealt with it in an enterprise environment) and I'm fairly certain there shouldn't be a problem. Just need to get the ISO off the internet and burn it and you should be good to go.

edit: here's the guide I'm referring to... http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228

When lifting up the back of the laptop half an inch i get a peak of 89 degrees celsius but maintain a healthy average of 83 degrees celsius. And on my 3dmark06 i hit 4000 on the penny. Does anyone know where i can get drivers for the 9600GT

    Greetings all,
This is my first post so here goes. I just received a dv5t today. The specs are as follows:

    Vista Home Premium 64 bit
    Webcam Fingerprint Reader
    Modem Port
    WiFi 5100 AGN with Bluetooth
    4GB Ram
    250 GB Hard Drive
    LightScribe DVD everything drive
    High Capacity 6 Cell Battery
    T9600 Core 2 Duo 2.8GH
    Nvidia 9600M GT
    1680x1050 BrightView Infinity Display
    Alas no TV Tuner

I am happy to try and answer any questions people may have, but here are a few thoughts. First off the lid has a defective switch so the laptop does not sleep or hibernate when closed. They are sending me a new laptop after 3 hours of chat support and 2 hours of reloading the disk image all of which did nothing. My previous laptop was a DV6500 series so I can provide some comparison feed back. The weight and size between the two is very similar. The fans are definitely quieter on the dv5t. I haven't really done much gaming since Half Life nearly got me tossed out of school, so I cant say much about heat under gaming conditions. I will be happy to run some tests while I still have the laptop if people can steer me to the software apps they would like to see evaluated. With normal email and web surfing the fans remain mostly on their lowest settings. The top of the laptop does get warm under your hands after extended run times. I tried comparing with the DV6500 and it seemed cooler on the left side then the dv5t. The right side was about the same on both. I find the higher res screen to be a definite upgrade from my old 1280 x 800 bright view. I also personally like the infinity setup. I did a reflection comparison between the infinity and the DV6500 bright view and it was not very different. The infinity may have slightly more reflection, but this could simply be due to the fact its much cleaner than DV6500. The buttons on the touchpad of the dv5t do take a little more force to push and make a slight click when doing so. If ever there was an appropriate laptop to call "Shiny" the dv5t is definitely it. Lots of chrome and shiny silver surfaces. Its a refreshing change although if you are OCD about fingerprints, keep a cleaning cloth near by. For those of you trying to decide if you should order or not, I wouldn't let my post sway you one way or another. Yes its disappointing to receive a brand new laptop with a defect, but its and electronic device... it happens. Take into account production just started on this model and there are bound to be initial bumps at startup. Overall, fit and finish is as good or better than my DV6500 so anyone with older models wont be disappointed. I suspect any of the dv5t's with Nvidia discrete graphics are going to get warm, particularly when gaming, but I cant see any way around it. My DV6500 gets very warm when you load it up and fans are very loud. I don't think we should expect a miracle cooling solution on the dv5t's when they are packed with faster graphics more memory and faster processors. We need to remember this is the consumer end of HP products, so cost is considered over complexity and cooling. One last thing to keep in mind, HP has a 21 day trial period on the laptops, so at least try it before you make a decision. OK, I have rambled enough. A disclaimer for any errors in spelling or grammar as I am almost too tired to read my own post. Let me know if there are any questions and take care. PS: The HP logo lights up just like the Apple products. Seems to me HP should pay us for this bill board advertising :)

nwperformance, nice job! Although I purchased dv4t, thank you for your review. How fast is your T9600? I'm asking because I chose T9600 for my dv4t and nobody talks about it in this forum. Can you run a benchmark? In this forum, most people purchased the P series... so they don't talk about T9600 :(

In addition, I can't find much about T9600 on the Internet.

Im pretty upset with my 3dmark06 score of 4000, when other pre-montevina laptops would easily top out over that. Because i know i was expecting something in the range of 5000 and up.

Also, what benchmark software should I run, and where do I get it? And for those of you that were talking about the 12cell battery, I did some deep searching on the HP parts website and found a part number for a 12 cell for the dv5t. I imagine its only a matter of time before is shows up for sale on the website. Same deal with the xb4, which is the new expansion dock replacing the xb3000. It is now on the website if you search for xb4. The replacement laptop I ordered, I decided to get the p8600 instead of t9600. I figured I could do a comparison test. Also the HP rep upgraded me to 320 gig hard drive and blu ray player by stepping down on the processor. We shall see if I made the right decision. Finally...why am I awake.... sheesh :)

I know Chaz used ATI Tool http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/436/mirrors.php
And ran the artifact test and got his GPU up to 91 C but tilting it up took it down to 81 C. You should be able to monitor the temperature with something like HDtune or Everest. There are tons of different temperatue programs

Oh and PlanetEarth, I will be curious to hear about your dv4t when it arrives...I debated long and hard between the dv4 and dv5 series...decisions decisions. I guess part of it was the lure of built in tv tuner (which I upgraded to on the second order) and the Nvidia 9600M GT. I hope someone does a test on the 9200 vs the 96000 to see performance and thermal differences. The main differences I could find on the processors was the T series has 6 megs of cache and also draws 35 watts, vs 3 megs of cache and 25 watts on the P series. I wish HP offered the P9500 which has the 6 megs of cache but maintains the 25 watt power rating. Seems like it would be the best of both worlds. Sorry if I am posting too much. I don't know forum etiquette yet :) Take care all

nwperformance, that is exactly what I thought!

    Why can't HP just offer P9500? !!!!!!!

That would be perfect. I hoped to see P9500 as an option before the release of the new dv series. Then, I realized there was no P9500...;; disappointed...

Anyway, I hope to see your benchmarks soon :)

Litig8r great pictures and I can't wait to get mine. Sounds like the computer is running fine doing everyday stuff, and the heat problems arise when it is under load. Has anybody tried playing some games yet? I don't think this heat issue is much of a drawback because I expected to use a cooler when gaming. Has anyone else tried raising the back up a little like chaz said? Any way I'm just disappointing to here yours are defective right out of the box. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

hi chaz, i am actually not a dv5t owner but i should be receiving my dv7t today or tomorrow. i was just wondering whether or not you had tried to OC the 9600M GT yet cuz i saw that you have been using ATI tool. If you have tried OC'ing, what settings did you OC too and what was the boost in performance on 3dmark06?? this all might be a stupid question because i have read that yall's dv5's are heating up pretty fast so OC'ing might not be a great idea lol. but i was just curious because i will probably run into the same "predicament" with the 9600M GT in my dv7. thanx.

    Greetings,
I'm getting a dv5T as a free replacement/upgrade from HP. Unfortunately I don't get to pick and choose the specs, since it's a freebie, but it will undoubtedly be nicer than my Compaq C762NR that I had purchased a month and a half ago.

I am a little leery of the P7350 2.0ghz C2D chip that they are giving me, as it hasn't been discussed much in this thread that I could find...but in any case I'm sure it will be a better proc than the Pentium Dual Core 1.73 I had.

I was able to put together a guide for the Compaq on how to do the XP downgrade, and will more than likely be looking to do the same on this HP. I have logged more than 3000 downloads of my "upgrade/downgrade" (whatever you want to call it) guide for the Compaq in just 1.5 months...so clearly there's still a demand for XP

Since it's so new I was wondering if anyone would be able to provide me with some hardware details, like screen shots of each tab from CPU-Z and fully expanded Device Manager.

If anyone else is interested in, or has done a downgrade to XP on this machine, I'd be interested to hear what your experience has been like.

    Thanks!

I got mine today a day earlier than the estimated arrival date. I had a strange and discomforting conversation with the fedex guy.
fedex guy: is this your first hp?
    me: yes
Fedex guy: you know everyone's been having problems with these so you might as well send it back right now.
    Me: really
fedex guy: yeah i've seen people get 2/3 of these and send them all back the next day so if you want i could send it back for you right now
    Me: mmhmm ok, bye
(let me at least open the damn thing first)
Well i unboxed it and tested the the main features (webcam, tv tuner) and checked the internal components to make sure i got what i paid for. Everything is running fine, its just a bit warm when its plugged in, and the tuner is ok with my cable connection, the over the air signals are problematic (but im inside ) and the digital tuner doesnt seem to pick up any digital channel, i have to click the analog tuner to pick up and channel both on the cable connection and the antennae. Id suggest getting a tv tuner instead of buying a big heavy tv for college, or what i did was instead of my roommate and i having a conflict when we both want to watch our own shows at the same time, i split the cable connection and connect one cable to my computer, the other to the tv in the dorm and we're both happy.

SO anyone know what the software title is that handles the Fingerprint Authentication. I backed up the SWSetup folder from my Dv5t when I got it and then wiped it for a fresh install but now I can't get the fingerprint scanner to function. The drivers installed but there is no app to use with it..gah!

In any case its working well except the remote that came with it doesn't appear to do a single thing...I didn't get the TV Tuner but I expected it to at least be able to control the Media Center portion of things.....probably another software piece I need to install I'm guessing...

Hi touchdowntexas - I haven't overclocked the card yet. I only used ATI Tool to run the artifact scanner. I think this card has some nice overclocking headroom, though it will be necessary to keep an eye on the temperatures as always when overclocking. I'll probably be using Rivatuner to OC.

Please let us know what kind of temperatures you have on your dv7t.
The P7350 may be the lowest-end processor offered, but it is by no means slow. It should be significantly faster than the Pentium you had. It has a 1066MHz FSB and 3MB of cache. It should be just a bit slower than the P8400.
    Try these:

177.73 for Vista 64-bit. Make sure you use the guide to install:

    First impressions:

It definitely is a bit on the warm side of things. I've got it on my lap and I'm just doing some internetting and it's warm. Not uncomfortable but noticeable for sure. I can feel it under the left side of the trackpad (where I rest my hand as I'm typing). Also of note, the trackpad. I don't like it. I'll probably get used to it but at this point I'm not very fond. It's got a shiny surface and sort of sticks to your finger. Also the click buttons are kinda funky. I find myself hitting the spot just below the buttons instead of the actual buttons. That's all I really got right now other than the fact that this thing is definitely sexy.

How much more preformance would you get if you over clocked the 9600M Gt?

i have actually never overclocked before but it is my understanding that even with minor overclocking you can get around 10-20% more 3dmark06 marks. that would be enough for me as it would put me on the same performance level(according to 3dmark06) as the dell xps m1530's. i would be perfectly content with that even though when i first started looking at dv7t and the 9600M GT i thought i would be getting at least 5000 marks in 3dmark06.

Really? We would have to overclock to match the m1530's 8600gt? I realized it's gddr3 or whatever but I didn't think it would be ahead of the 9600m gt still. Hmm. I was about to get one but the HP just looked too good :D . That and I've been reading a lot of stuff online about how the 8600 cards are blowing up or something. Not sure what that's all about really.

Tried that the processor has reached to 87C while playing Call of Duty 4 and its keep lagging like crazy while playing multiplayer and some other games. Also i try running Pc marks 05 and 3d marks 05 and 06 and its keep crashing and internet explorer and others programs also. Imma try a clean install to get rid of the bloatware and see what happens. Also will my Serial key with Vista SP1 under my notebook works with my Vista Disk because my vista disk doesn't have SP1 included

Hmm. Now this is a little bit disturbing, as COD4 is one of the games I NEED to play on this laptop. Is this an isolated incident? Anyone else have any info regarding the notebook's performance during gaming?

Is the 9600M GT DDR2 better than the 8600M GT DDR3?

    Sortof.

The 8600 DDR3 is faster, but can't run DX10 very well.
9600 DDR2 is slower, but can run DX10 better.

In terms of pure power, the 8600 DDR3 is better... but overall, I'd take the 9600 DDR2 over the 8600 DDR3 since the previous 8400s and 8600s are having major heat issues that is causing nVidia to recall them by the thousands.

Greetings dv5t dudes, I think I'll get one of these fine machines

Since I order from the Swedish site it seems as like I can only chose from pre- configured machines but I found one with a price of approx $1500 ( there was another Which I should prefer but that didn't have any price listed, but I'll call them and ask tomorrow)

    Intel® Core™2 Duo-processor P8600 2.4 GHz

    4096 MB system memory

    NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

    15,4-tums WXGA High Definition BrightView Widescreen 1280 x 800

    320GB harddrive

How good is this compared to other platforms in the same price class, ( consider that Sweden have 25% vat) and could I get something better for the same money?

How well will this system run games like crysis and mass effect?

That's most interesting. I will have to check my load temperatures when I benchmark the machine.

I played Frontlines: Fuel of War for a little while yesterday and didn't have any heat problems. I don't know if it is dual-core enabled though.
