I would not recommend that; LCDs are blurry outside of their native resolution. What you should do is go to Best Buy and try some of the HPs there; all of the 15.4" ones will have WXGA 1280x800.

Is the Intel P7350 a Centrino 2 Chip? I cannot tell from the HP Site. The higher speed chips have a T in front of them.

    Yes. Centrino 2 chips are:

    P7350
    P8400
    P8600
    T9400
    T9600

I may have missed some, but those are all Centrino 2.

Earlier in this thread, someone wanted to buy 4 GB of RAM on newegg. I chose to get 2 GB because it's cheaper to buy the RAM from newegg than to get all 4 GB from HP. Does the notebook have 2 1 GB sticks? If it takes up two slots, then that might be a problem, because I wanted to buy 2 GB of RAM to upgrade. It's still cheaper to get 4 GB from newegg, so it's not a big problem.

That's correct, it is 2* 1GB DDR2-800 modules. You need to buy a 2* 2GB kit if you want to upgrade to 4GB.
Note that no one has run any game benchmarks yet, only 3DMark06. 3DMark06 is inherently unreliable for gauging performance.

Actually, I take back what I said earlier. The aforementioned processors including P7350 are all Penryn based processors. So they themselves are not Montevina or Centrino 2; however, they are being used by HP on the new Montevina/Centrino 2 chipset. Thus, the advantages of Centrino 2, such as support for 800Mhz are seen in the dv5t no matter which of those processors you customize your notebook with.

This is dumb. HP not only delayed my repair of my current dv2416 by 3 weeks. BUT the brand spanking new dv5t that I just received, apparantly has a bad motherboard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't even know what I should do... school is starting in 2 weeks, and I need a new notebook.

Take a look at my post here . . .
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3695508&postcount=244
So far, I have not found a reason not to like this notebook other than it is a fingerprint magnet.
The fan draws air from the bottom and blows air out the back and left sides. So yes the fan is located at the bottom of the notebook. That is how most notebooks are cooled.

I just ordered my dv5t on the 29th... Are there more people who like it than dislike it and is the heat going to be much of a problem if I play games for an extended amount of time. I see a lot more negative posts than positive ones which bothers me

The biggest reason I went with the dv5t over the XPS 1530 is the continued problems with the Nvidia 8400 and 8600 series video cards. The message boards are littered with tons of overheating problems with the cards and owners having to adjust their fans to run constantly in order to cool the laptop. Not to mention Nvidia's recent admission that in fact some of their cards are defective.

From what I've read, the dv5t's more recently released 9000 series video cards may run a bit hot, but shouldn't be in danger of harming the laptop in the way the 8400 and 8600 series have been with the Dell XPS 1530. The 9600GT should be a safer bet, even if its performance won't be quite as strong as the 8600.

I would hold off judging the notebook based on the comments thus far, there are only a few owners. The review for the dv5z on this site (which, as I mentioned a few pages back, is almost identical to the dv5t other than the internal hardware) was glowing.
The dv5t is 5.83 pounds according to HP. I will weigh the dv5t on a digital scale when I do my review to make sure that is accurate.

Well so far my dv5t has been chugging along great. Running Vista 32bit and installing all my apps is all I have done so far. Ill be running some World of Warcraft on it later so no major graphics test, I suppose Ill eventually test something better on it but I'm not to much a heavy gamer WoW is about as intense as I get.

I specifically went with the P8400 and integrated graphics, to eliminate
heat and extend battery life. That's one of the advantages of not being
    a gamer.

Mine arrived today but unfortunately I'm taking summer school for two more days. Because of the expected shipping dates I sent it to my permanent home and can't provide any details regarding the heat on the GPU issue. I'm gonna also request that someone else with the 9600m gt please post their temps while gaming. I do plan on extensively gaming on this notebook so if anyone knows anything else, please post. If it's a simple fix of getting a notebook cooler or something, maybe it won't be so bad. But I'd need games to be run for more than a half hour period for sure.

    Hey dv5t owners!!!

I noticed my machine gets pretty warm on the left palm rest, and on the top right near the power button, whilst idling even. But after letting it sit on my Zalman NC1000, the system is waaaay cooler. Other than the fact that my motherboard is bad (been on the phone with HP tech for the past 2 hours... waiting to be escalated after dozens of diagnostics), I really really like this notebook, and am hoping they send me an identical replacement soon.

That's good to hear, I was looking into buying that exact model. Does the dv5t fit well on it? I'm not sure about the dimensions and all that. Also have you tried gaming with your new notebook on the cooler?

It hangs off by .5 inch on the left and right. It fits very well front and back ---especially on the back since the Zalman has a nice dip in its design that seems to work well with how the dv5t's vents are designed. I think that the NC1000 is a great fit... you might think that the notebook is too large for it because it hangs off on the side a bit, but when I put my hands to the side of my notebook/cooler, I can still very much feel the cool air coming out the bottom sides of notebook.

Haven't tested any games yet though.

Thanks, 0.5 inches off either side is much better than my current old laptop's fit on it's cheap cooler =). I just put one on order. Seems like the dv5t might need it lol. By the way, for others interested in the zalman nc1000, which I've heard nothing but good reviews about, http://www.sharkacomputers.com/zalmannc1000.html seems like the cheapest place to buy it. Newegg seems to have $49.99 listed with $9.39 3 day shipping posted. That sharkacomputers site is a bit cheaper, $42.95 with total after shipping (UPS ground) and tax to be $53.67. Haven't really tried this online store before but I figure it should be safe, yahoo stores and all that.

$45 for the silver model, free shipping. They had a 10% off coupon for it when I bought it, but I don't see it there anymore.

Before you buy a cooler, just try raising the back of the notebook off whatever surface it's resting on about a half-inch. I found in post 244 that it greatly reduces the temperature of the graphics chip.

Defective product upon arrival, heh. After I remove a power source, the system clock reverts back to factory default, and startup gives me a CMOS checksum error.

I'm actually not returning it, but exchanging it for another with the same specs. Wish they offered me an upgrade or something for wasting my time by not inspecting their product before it shipped.

I"m actually performing an exchange to get the better wifi card which is free now, and with all the money saved from the (now) free upgrade to 250gb hd and some other stuff, I'm exchanging for the higher screen resolution as well. At the time I purchased I spent as much as my budget would allow, just turns out I could've gotten a lot more with the same budget now. I actually thought this exchange service and all my contact with HP thus far has been pretty good. Hopefully it won't come defective though, I can see how that would be pretty frustrating. An exchange for the exact same system due to a defective product would definitely be a waste of time.

Are all of these temp problems only when gaming, or are they the norm? I don't plan on gaming a whole bunch - mostly a school/work computer.

Chaz, as far as the lifting the laptop up a little to help airflow, do they have the 12 cell battery for the dv5 series that will do just this?

Although I'm not Chaz, a 12-cell battery will lift up your laptop a little bit.
But, the problem is that 12-cell batteries are not available for dv4t and dv5t right now. I'm sure that HP will release 12-cell batteries in the near future.

That's how I used to use this current laptop I got =). Anyways, I see a cooler as a pretty good investment so the original plan was to get one anyways. I'm sure if lifting the back end helps getting a cooler should do the trick as well (hopefully better). My only real concern is that a new notebook shouldn't really be required to be lifted in order to play games. It's a little disturbing that these heat issues have come up, even though the solution is pretty simple.

A question regarding the heat, does the GPU temp of the 9600m GT stabilize around 90 something C? If it stays around there and it continues performing well I don't really see a reason to panic about it too much I guess. As long as it doesn't really keep rising and eventually dominate everything, would this really big a big deal?

The temperature problems are only when gaming . . . I have had zero temperature issues since I started raising up the back of my notebook while gaming. At idle, the surface of the notebook is only lukewarm, and that's with my dv5t is sitting on a not-so-great surface in an 80*F room. At the office where I work, on a proper desk with air conditioning, this thing is barely warm at idle.

I agree with PlanetEarth, who did a nice job of answering the battery question:
I may consider a 12-cell battery when they come out with it.
It is a small world indeed. Go Phillies, fourth game in a row tonight. :)

Browsing the thread now with my new dv5t .... and man, she's sleek as bullet... I will be grabbing the 12 cell when it comes out though. Personally, I like the lift it gives the laptop as it arches up the back and it allows for increased cooling below the computer.

VERY impressed with this computer so far. Lightning fast and quiet as a mouse too. Seems to be a very solid built system.
