I have windows Vista 32-bit on my dv5, and I have 4 GB of RAM. I know 32-bit only reads 3 GB of RAM, and I'm wondering is there an upgradable version from 32-bit to 64-bit or do I have to buy the OS 64-bit CD?? And do all the hardware in Dv5 support 64-bit??

well, since yesterday, hp screwed up again with my new laptop that is now going to be built by the 21st of nov. a guy called me and had noticed that when the other person re-built or configured the new laptop, they forgot to put the 1680x1050 display,, **** i would have been p.o.-D well, for my trouble, and since i asked, i went ahead an ordered the new bronze one instead of the onyx. i think it'll look pretty cool. he gave me that free of charge. so, actually after all this time, my laptop will cost 880.52 for what's in my sig. i'm glad they are compensating me, but grrrrrr i started this process on October 3rd, 2008 and now i won't have a fully functional computer till i would guess... turkey day. oh well...
-
need some help here.. dont know what i did to my dv5t that now i couldnt find the adjust brightness in my power options.. i tried holding down the FN together with F7 or F8 to adjust brightness but still it wouldnt work..
any idea what could have screw up? recent things that i have done are installing new nvidia drivers and undervolting my laptop using rmclock. -
A quick question about Li-Ion batteries:
I just dled a software called RMClock, it can variably manage your CPU's voltages to help save battery. The battery information however, shows me
Design Capacity: 88800mWh
Fully Charged Capacity: 71040 mWh
The designed capacity is about 15-20% higher than the full capacity right now. (ive owned the dv5t for only a month now!)
So my question is, the long debated myth, is it alright if I plug in my machine every chance I get? Or does obeying the Li-Ion's charge cycle rule mean I charge it when the battery is critically low?
thanks guys -
@farsang,
rawalpindi, pakistan. -
salam ali, from which shop you have bought your laptop.
i am buying from myshop in lahore.
does this laptop heats up much while gaming.
is there any shop in islamabad or rawalpindi where this laptop is available? -
Which driver are you guys using for the 9600M GT?
I currently have the 178.13 one ( here) but I see they've got the 180 version out. So has anyone tested this latest one yet?
Edit: from what I've read these ones seem to cause people crashes and BSODs :/ maybe I should just stick with the one I've got or try 179... -
Hey guys, this might be a stupid question... But someone is bringing me the laptop from USA as I dont live there... But I want them to bring it with all the accessories and manuals etc... Is that too much stuff? my guess is:
AC Adapter, Laptop remote control, TV Tuner remote control, TV Tuner anthena, TV Tuner coaxial adapter, and then just papers... (as far as I know, no CD's come with it)
Thanks!
NOTE: Warranty or stuff or anything like a sticker or so that I would need from the box? -
Its not that bad. All that stuff is built in (remote goes in the express slot) except the TV tuner stuff.
There is a small box of documentation but right, no CDs -
That "box" of documentation is nothing hard to carry or to put in your baggage so it wont use much space?
-
Not sure if you are asking a question or not, but its small. In terms of surface area, probably a medium-to large greeting card. Definitely not 8x11. Its about 2 inches thick.
Actually, I have my remote(which I don't really use) in that box right now so you could put small things in there as well -
Should I plug in my laptop whenever I want or should I follow the charge cycles rule and charge only when the battery's critically low?
Thanks! -
You'll can potentially save charge cycles in the long run by maximizing how much charging needs to be done per "time to charge it up", or so I was told.
But, given that lithium batteries have a certain life span anyways, the ultimate answer was to just use it as you please, because they only really hold charges well enough for around 2-3 years(I've owned several Thinkpads and that was the case, I've had to replace my battery every 2 years - not following any sort of discharge rules) -
Where can I buy the 12 cell battery?
-
Thanks. I spent like 10 minutes trying to find it.
-
That price is ridiculous.
-
*Nods*
wowsa...maybe it'll go down in the near future -
Hey guys, is it normal for the quickplay buttons to act weird when the the laptop gets warm?
I'm so annoyed that this volume osd keeps coming up even when I don't touch it, and the rest of the keys unresponsive. Anyone gets this same problem?
It usually starts acting up when I try to adjust the volume using the quickplay buttons. This only happens when it's warm/hot. -
That's pretty interesting because my volume/mute keys (or any of them for that matter) usually stop working when I'm gaming. Pretty annoying indeed, hp needs to figure that ess out.
-
Normal for this laptop - yes. Doesn't make it "right" however. I would suggest to keep complaining about it, maybe they'll fix it eventually (worth a try anyway )
-
I agree with uncming. It is a normal but it shouldn't be so. Really it is just an annoyance though. The laptop is good for the price.
-
Exactly! When I game this happens 100% or when it gets really warm/hot. Geez.. It's so annoying. I love this laptop. Best bang for the buck.
I wonder who I should whine to for this issue?=/ -
Any coupons out yet from HP? Im looking to get this notebook!!!
-
Check the 'laptop deals' link at the top of this page
-
Wait wait wait. Why is this normal? Why should this be normal? It's "normal" because most dv5 owners experience this or it was somehow...intended? I'm pretty upset that this happens and I usually ignored and troubleshooted it when it initially occured, but now it's 100% nuisance.
Sucks. -
Thanks but there all not very good, i thought they come out with 30% off ones every now and then? Im waiting for that!!!
-
Not normal, meant to say, common problem. Yes, it's a flaw in the laptop, but I don't see it as much of a problem. Try using the search function, I think some people were able to fix it somehow.
Back when I had my dv5t, I just pressed the stop button and it worked for some reason. It worked for others too. Then I took procedures to cool it and it never happened again (or from what I remember anyway). -
Here Jaden, check these websites out. www.xpbargains.com and www.slickdeals.net . the second one doesn't specialize in laptop deals, but they do post the HP coupons when they occur . -
Some claim it's heat related. However, I have 3 DV5's and I can tell you that it's not, only, heat related.
I can not speak to some quicktouch issue that might be related to a heat issue, because on 2 or 3 of the DV5's that I have purchased and setup, the problem was right off the bat, on cold start. The 3rd works fine.
On the 2 units that had the problem, the problem does not get worse as the ltop heats up, nor get better when it's cool.
It's fine the vast majority of the time, now, after the driver/software reinstall.
But, every once in a while, a minor malfunction still happens. I tend to agree with the person who suggested that it's related to static in/around the ltop.
Overall, the design SUCKS! There has been success by uninstalling the drivers for the quickplay/touch buttons and then loading a new set of driver.
It worked for the 2 DV5's I had issues with.
Also, both had the same problems with the erratic volume control, but, only one of them had a problem where the speaker mute would stay in "red muted" color, even though the button actually still worked. The additional problem on that DV5 was that the light would not change from white to red.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers fixed the issue for the most part on both machines.
Every once in a while if I use the HP slider (which I use rarely), the system will continue with a series of "tick" sounds. Pushing another control button like "stop", as another poster suggested, does work to stop the "ticking" sounds.
HP simply needs to redesign their POORLY designed and/or made touch system. It's a very annoying problem and leads to bad customer reveiws and negative comments about something that should work. A simple "mechanical" style vol. control would have worked just fine, but they had to go and try to get fancy...and FAILED! -
I got a DV5T with a 9600m and a 1680x display for 900 bucks... It was a good price but recently I have been hearing horror stories about quality and repair/support.
I have heard HPs break down alot... this is a no no for me. I can't have my laptop be unreliable. Do HPs, espeically the DV5T break down often!? I want this laptop to be reliable.
I also here reports ranging from people sending in their notebook and getting it back damaged, or with downgraded parts.
the price was excelent for the components, but I am fearful this laptop is going to break down alot, not be reliable, and be a pain to havbe to ship of to repair, and have it even more damaged when sent in for repair.
Heck I just got it and i already have to send it back in. The fan in the upper left hand corner is broken and making this annoying noise. Here is a link to the noise.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_wepYTRbTU
Really worried here.
I don't would rather not spend 1300 bucks on a Sager 2096 but I also don't want my laptop to be unreliable and prone to breaking often. -
Doesn't break down, just has weird media button controls, which I'm positive will be fixed within the next couple patches.
Dv5t is a beautiful powerful machine. -
hello all,
I just got dv5t and its really good in terms of the price i paid.
But i have a problem in hibernating the notebook. Whenever i hibernate, around 5 minutes later it automatically starts in sleep mode. I wonder what is going on.
Am i missing something? -
The Hi Res screen seems to be a waste of money. For a screen this small, the 1280X800 is more than adequate. Yes you get a bit more room on the desktop, but when it comes to playing games, playing all the newer games (Far Cry 2, Fallout 3) at that high of a resolution will give you terrible frame rate anyway.
-
I have to highly disagree there. I think it's one of the best upgrades on the laptop. The screen is NOT that small, and I found going from WXGA to WSXGA+ gave me so much more screen estate, and font was definitely readable. It's not just a bit more room, it's a lot more room. You mention games but the dv5t is not just used for gaming. It's in the range of performance entertainment, not a gaming laptop. Anyway, the laptop as a general for all users will be used far less for gaming than other work like word processing or browsing the internet, in which case, the higher resolution is a great improvement.
-
hey guys! i bought a CoolerMaster NotePal X1, an X shaped laptop cooler stand which is USB powered and everything worked just fine! it was a investment of 1500/- indian rupees and i got a great typing angle, very cool n neutral palmrest area, raised screen level(2 settings) and the best thing is it is light n i can put it along with the lappie on my lap!! this addressed all the problems with touch sensitive(capacitor powered) quick play buttons, which ARE malfunctioning due to heat dissipation system below them (95% times this IS the reason). without laptop cooler, dv5 is not meant for lap n is definitely a (Desk)top replacement!!
As for higher resolution screen, i think dv5 is Amazingly powerful n can give u a full glory of High Definition Movies, n for that a higher resolution screen is definitely favorable! (Not for gaming) because the screen can give you a better looking visual if u run the game in their native(or maximum) resolution, hence a 1280 x 800 resolution screen can give you better gaming FPS n glory than a 1650x 1150 screen coupled with mediocre graphics card(any laptop card) !
peace out!
-
OMG!!! What happened to this lappies prices???
dv5t from $729.99
dv5z from $669.99
dv7t from $1,024.99
ETC!
I think the HP Shop is bugged cause they're showing a banner that says "NEW Low Price. HP Pavillion dv5. Now starting at $549.99"
???
-
yea, i just noticed that because i have been fallowing the dv5t, then i look today and im like, what?
could just be a mix up. -
hey guys a quick question to you owners im going to get either this or the hdx16 but i have problems with loud fan noises and overheating with my current laptop and so i dont plan on buying a brand new one only to have the same issues. so honestly is everyone having these problems with heat and loud fan noises?
-
When I run 2 copies of World of Warcraft, along with e-mail, browser, IMs, etc., the computer gets fairly warm. The fans come on when they need to but they aren't noisy. I don't need to turn up the TV or the volume of my game or anything like that. I keep it on a laptop stand while I am playing (which goes on your lap) and therefore don't have my legs get hot.
When just doing normal tasks (i.e. no games), the temperature is comfortable. I regularly donate plasma and I take my laptop with me to surf the web, watch movies, listen to music and it doesn't get hot enough to bother me. That whole process is an 45 minutes to an hour of the laptop constantly being on my legs without moving. I actually haven't noticed the fans at all while doing that.
So there's my experiences with the heat and fan noise. Take them for what you will. -
i guess ppl just exaggerated, with that kind of powerful gpu in the system its expected to run hot when your playing games but im glad that during normal processes it runs well. thanks
-
I think the dv5t dropped majorly in price (I've been watching it too) is because they're now being offered with plan vanilla dual core 1.86ghz as well as beefier c2d flavors (which amounts to a huuuge price contrast) and an integrated graphics option. They're letting users get 12cell batteries now too.
-
So anyone had there DV5T for awhile and used it often? How it is holding up? Is it durable? Will it last a few years of daily use and travel?
-
I think the most senior member would be someone from July - I got mine in September and love every time I fire it up
-
No probelms so far uncming?
