Relax Steve0 and check your private messages :) Remember we are uber geeks pushing things to their limits. Not normal everyday stuff. I am sure you will be very happy with your new lappy. Wow...that is a silly rhyme. I really need to quit running benchmarks and get some sleep :p

nwperformance, yeah I'm an electronic engineer. I do satellite/microwave/fibre communications and electronic design/programming.

My PC knowledge is pretty much powersurfing on the subjects I'm interested mixed with real world experience in electronic design. There's alot smarter people out there then me...sadly some of them are now younger than me too :(

Advice to new buyers of ANY PC... 32bit is always going to have better support than 64bit. Thus likely will have better software/drivers and unless the world suddenly embraces 64bit in masses. 64Bit is going to cause compatibility problems. The same hardware in XP will likely benchmark faster than Vista also...

The funny thing re 4Gb RAM usage i notice is that despite the 2Ghz (dv5-1050tx) and 2.5Ghz (dv5-1007/9tx) CPU.... the extra 2Gb RAM made NO Difference to game 3D performance anyway. If your doing something which requires 4Gb of Ram... then likely a Laptop is a poor choice and money would be better spent on a powerhouse desktop PC. Running 4Gb in a 32Bit OS only means that it'll address 3.2Gb of it (from memory) and the rest will be ignored... But would likely not reduce performance in anyway.

The extra 500Mhz in the 7/9tx models over the 1050tx model was $500 more expensive too... thats a $1 per Mhz!!!! for only 200ish 3dMarks more. The result when running 3dMarks side by side mean't the whole set of tests were finished on the 2.5Ghz models about 40 seconds before the 2Ghz model. I believe this was mainly due to the loading speed being quicker on the 2.5Ghz. Remember 500Mhz on 2Ghz is 25% when you think about it! But is it that benificial when we're talking $500! With that money you could get a nice bag and cooler and a couple of games?!

Real world results probably mean.... BF2 loads maps ~5 seconds faster on the 2.5Ghz? But in game fps are virtually going to be identical! (within a couple of fps atleast)

Crysis may benifit from extra CPU speed but, that what desktops were invented for? (unless your game to spend $4500AUD in a laptop lol!) Personally Crysis would only glance this laptop for curiosity reasons, and would probably never be played on it when I have a gaming rig setup for that purpose.

BF2/COD4/TDU/C&C3 etc on the move however is much more likely ;) especially when I'm staying at the GF's place.

    here is my guess [IMG]

the yellow one is the fan (it sucks air)
the orange ones are the exit for the air (where the hot air comes)

    is this right?

It did work - that GPU is identical to the 9600M-GT in my dv5t, clocks and all. Screenshot attached.

I'll have to try those 175.86 drivers out. I am using 177.72.
    That's correct.

Does vista 64-bit make games run slower or not work as well? Should i have gotten 32 bit. I dont even know what the advantages of 64 bit are?

I noticed this yesterday but the vent to the left of the fan on my computer is blocked, only the vent at the back is open. Is this because I dont have a dedicated graphics card hence i dont need the extra opening?

OK, I did it again. I cancelled my order form HP and reordered with Vista 64. I figured, what the hell. My desktop is 32 bit, so whatever I needed, I can always use it there. Here's the specs:

    Vista 64
    P8600 2.4GHz
    320 GB HD
    9600M GT
    1650*1080 Screen
2 GB Ram (OCZ 4GB RAM already in hand)
    Intel 5100 AGN WiFi/Bluetooth
    Webcam, Mic, Fingerprint reader
    3 year ADP warranty

Chaz, please make me stop reordering. This is the fourth one. My Costco one comes on Tuesday, which I'll be returning. The first HP is "being built, but the cancelled request has been put in". My 2nd hp (and last) is due to ship the 12th. I'm done.

Steve0, quit worrying so much. 64bit got a bad rap when the xp version was introduced. There was almost no driver support and not much need for 4 gigs of ram (one of the main reasons for 64bit, as 32bit can only support 3gigs of memory). With Vista however, 4gigs of ram is almost a must if you do alot of things at once. Vista 64 has much better driver support and 64bit is going to be the wave of the future. Microsoft claims any 32 bit program made for Vista will run on the 64bit version. The only thing I cant comment on are performance differences with games. Perhaps someone who is a die hard gamer with the 64bit version can comment. Also, Vista in theory is supposed to run faster in the 64bit flavor, so it should be all good. If you really have issues with it, you can probably get HP support to let you switch to a 32bit version. Probably just requires a different install key.

Another quick update. I read in another thread that the same install key works for 32 or 64 bit versions of windows, you just need to have the correct dvd for the install. So yes you can switch to 32 if you dont like 64 woo hoo :)

Hi guys/gals - I got Call of Duty 4 installed. I haven't formally benchmarked it yet, but the game is quite playable and enjoyable at 1440x900 with high settings, no AA. I played for a half hour with no problems.

I didn't raise the back of my notebook up for this gaming session. The dv5t gets very warm on the bottom - you definitely don't want this machine on your lap - and the surface also got warm, but nothing alarming.

On a side note, I think 2GB is barely enough RAM to game with. 4GB is probably worth it if you want to use this machine as your primary gaming machine.
A few forum members were discussing that a few pages back, see here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3697389&highlight=zalman#post3697389
I am thinking about getting one of those Zalman nc1000s at Circuit City myself. While raising up the back of the dv5t helps it a lot, I don't want to deal with doing that all the time. Also, a nice benefit of a cooling pad is you can use it as a platform for your notebook on uneven surfaces - i.e., your lap.
Interesting - yes, probably because you have integrated graphics. That is the only reason I can think of. The dedicated 9600M-GT definitely needs the extra cooling power.
    I have these specs - P8400, 9600GT, 2GB RAM, 160GB drive, WSXGA+ Infinity, and Vista 32bit.

Show me a laptop that doesn't get hot? it's 40-50Watts..... ever touched the back of the stereo (45-55Watts also) in your car after it's been on for 15mins? I think you'd all be horrified if you knew how hot that got too.

They all get hot! Just don't use in laying on something where airflow can't escape the vents. When playing games, just either lift the back end or place it on a flat smooth surface. Thermal Throttling these days will pretty much always protect your lappy. If it's getting too hot, worst case is it will slow down a bit. More chance of the battery exploding under the load of gaming than it bursting into flames on it's own. Youtube "Laptop Battery Exploding" ;)
Vista warns me that gaming using the battery in performance mode may damage the battery lol....

I bought one of those cooler things for my Acer, Targus I think it is (it's at the GF's place, she claimed it... bloody women ... anyway...) and it was so loud and seemed to do nothing for temperatures. So I let her have if and just lift the back when I play games now.

    Ramjet.

What I want to know is if anyone has had or thought about getting the SPDIF Audio out separately from the HDMI for an amplifier?

Well Im new here but i was under the impression that the dv5t came with the new centrino processors? i recieved mine with a blue sticker instead if the pink one i see in all the pics. i bought the Intel(R)Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 and doing further research i used the cpuz program and found out it was Penryn, also i am having an issue with the sound, sometimes it will just go mute when not in use for a bit and when i try to play sometime it remains mute even though the sound is clearly on, any suggestions on that?

Other than that this machine is solid and works great.

    Hello,

I was thinking about purchasing an HP dv5t, but was hoping someone could comment on the display quality?

I just returned a Dell XPS 1530 because of the apparent GPU issues. The XPS did have a really nice display though. (I opted for the 1400x900 LED) .

Can anyone comment or compare if the DV5t display is any good, better?

    I was going to get the "15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1680 x 1050)"

    Any suggestions would be great.

I have the 1680 x 1050 Infinity BrightView and I really like it. It is much clearer than the 1280 x 800 on my DV6500 and doesn't have the edge bleed. Love the higher resolution, but if you are sight impaired, crank up the font size. I also like the look of the infinity cover. Just one smooth surface across the whole face. It looks like it offers greater protection for the LCD panel beneath. The LCD panel is perfectly centered behind the protective screen. It does not appear to be any more reflective than the glossy surface of my old brightview on the DV6500, but yes you can check your hair if the screen is dark :) I cant comment on this screen compared to an LED unit, as I have yet to see one. Just a few of my thoughts on the LCD. Take care

First, thank you for the reply!

I currently have a HP DV6500 series, the XPS LED screen was way brighter/clearer then my HP. That was basically my reason for asking... after seeing the LED screen I was curious if HP improved displays since the 6500 series.

Thanks again for the info, much appreciated!

As I said in my previous posts . . . yes a notebook cooler would help. Not necessary though, you can just lift the back up.

Full review of this notebook . . . probably 10 days and it will be written, and posted shortly after. You should read our review of the dv5z . . . it is essentially the same notebook:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4486
The statement you quoted . . . not sure I understand what the poster is saying. The dv5t is a Montevina notebook. If ordered with the Intel wireless card, it's Centrino 2. Montevina isn't a CPU, it's a platform - CPU, chipset, and wireless card. All of the processors offered on the dv5t are for the Montevina platform - they have a 1066MHz FSB.
Well, it looks really cool. It is extremely reflective though, like looking at a piece of glass. I think it is much more stylish than the regular screen. At my Best Buy, there are dv5s on display with both screen types.
I'll get Crysis installed, don't worry. Today I should have some time to run a benchmark.

No, just a different sticker...Core 2 Duo instead of Centrino 2.

In order to qualify for Centrino 2 sticker, a system must have these three Intel components - cpu(mobile Core 2 duo), chipset(45 series) & the wireless(5100/5300). The 802.11b/g wifi card is made by Broadcom, so you get a C2D sticker instead.

wow thats so stupid they give you a different sticker even if the wireless components are virtually the same just made by different companies. The intel one cant do anything better than the 802.11b/g wifi card so whats the point?

Well, Centrino is an Intel brand. So, why would they give it to other companies when they sell wifi cards themselves & pocket the profit.

As far as which is better, there are people who vouch for one over the other. But having used broadcom cards for the past 5yrs, I haven't personally run into any usability issues with it except for Linux support. The same applies for the previous Intel wifi's except they have much better linux support.

Steve0, the Intel card also gives you wireless N capability. So there is one advantage to having the fancy sticker :) Other than that its a marketing gimmick to get everyone to buy more Intel products. Also, you can always upgrade this card later if you want N or bluetooth added to your system. Dont worry, you are getting all the other gee wiz Centrino 2 hardware. I dont know though...that Centrino 2 sticker is pretty darn sexy. Haha take care all.

Hi Steve0, nothing new available yet for 64bit, but I am waiting for my dv5t with P8600 to arrive so I can do some direct comparisons. It should be interesting. I dont know if you saw my earlier post, but apparently our Windows keys will work with either 32 or 64 bit versions of Vista, so we can switch if we dont like one or the other. If the other laptop also has lower benchmarks with 64bit, I may install 32bit and see what the change is. I will keep you posted. Take care

You are welcome Steve0. Ok I have to go get some real work done today. If anyone wants me to run anymore tests on the T9600 dv5t before I have to ship it back next week, let me know. Have fun everyone. Hasta

    1. Ordered Through Costco.
    2. Price dropped $100 next morning, had to cancel and reoorder.
    3. Got a better deal at HP.com with student discount - canceled Costco and ordered through HP.
    4. Decided I wanted Vista 64 instead of 32, canceled that order, and ordered again.

    I WANT MY STICKER!!!

Yo Nwperformance give me the link to the program you used to get the benchmarks and when I get my laptop I will let you know what it scored. (I will have t9400 and 64-bit)

Chaz what did your lappy score with the 3dmark06?
