Yes, the code is expired now but they should be able to offer you the same discount, some sort of price guarantee I'm sure, just call them as soon as you can!

i have serious problems with my DV5 and Windows 7.

Got the beta 7000 from TechNet yesterday, and ever since i installed win 7 + nvidia video driver the strangest error starts.

When booting, the new win 7 logo say windows is starting, it suddenly hangs. Just the picture, because from the speakers i can hear windows 7 starting.
So im stuck watching the "starting windows logo".

Ive tried to close the lid, and open it again to see if that helps = Nope.
Tried nvidia driver from HP.com = Nope.
    Official nvidia driver = Nope.
Downloaded driver kit from microsoft for win 7 = Nope.
    Safe Mode = Works.

But even uninstall through safe mode dont work, yesterday i had to format the hdd to try and install it again, same thing happend today.

    I have a DV5-1095eo with nvidia 9600GT.

    anyone else had this error?

hey guys, I'm about to pull the trigger on a new dv5t, but I had a question about the RAM space. how much expandability is there? aka how much room is there to add ram that I have laying around?

The dv5t can handle up to 8GB.. it only has 2 slots though so you'd need 2x4GB for that. I have 4GB in mine and it came with 2x2GB.. hope that helps.. :) and just in case you didn't know notebooks use different RAM to PC's :)

great thanks for the info dannyres. i was looking through the hdx16 forum and there was a link to newegg for the memory used in these laptops. Are you familiar with the exact memory needed in this computer? Also, off topic but does the hdx16 have more slots?

    Thanks!

From what I've read (I havn't tried it myself), any DDR2 SDRAM 200 pin SODIMM RAM should work. You'll want DDR2-800. Don't bother getting anything higher as from what people say it will run at 800Mhz anyway. I believe there is a well priced G.Skill 2x4GB pack on newegg somewhere. :)

I'm trying to decide on a new laptop and the HP dv5t has pretty much what I'd like and it's even affordable, but what's holding me back is the mention of overheating.
How serious is this (I'm not a gamer, but use PS CS3 and do some video editing) issue?
Also, is the screen LED lit?
And how responsive is HP's customer service?

    @siskiou
    For PS CS3/video editing,get the T9400 processor/
Screen is NOT LED lit and not bright enough to use outdoors.
    In India they suck.

Yeah newegg has 2x2Gb kit for around 40 dollars, I ordered the OCZ kit for 45 w/free shipping.

Def better then the 50 smackers HP charges to upgrade to 4Gb

Would the P8400 do? It's about the most I can afford.
How is the screen apart from no LED, indoors? I probably won't use it outdoors very much. Am thinking of the 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050).

As far as my knowledge a T-series would really help in such apps. But I think that might suffice. Screen is okay for indoor use.I have the WXGA infinity. Never had a look at the WSXGA. The infinity display causes more glare.

I'm not sure if it is best to create a seperate thread for this or since it is DV5T related, I could ask for feedback here.

I just ordered my DV5T laptop a few days ago and though the fun part would be shopping for a bag for it.

UGH was I wrong. Headache trying to decide so I thought I might ask you guys for some assistance since you all have the same laptop and must use a bag, right? :)

Well, I looked over this thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=228866

And I visited the eBags site also and have found these bags so far as options:
    http://www.ebags.com/keen/alameda_15_laptop_messenger/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=104614
    http://www.ebags.com/case_logic/15_4_canvas_messenger_bag/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=113539
    http://www.ebags.com/belkin/15_laptop_messenger_bag/product_detail/index.cfm?modelID=105284#
    http://www.spireusa.com/products/EN8.htm

I really liked the Tibuk bags but it seems their messenger bags, unless I get a really big one (and plain boring black), the others won't fit it. The Spire bag looks nice but still not sure if it will hold a DV5T.

So for messenger type bags, anyone use one right now that can hold the DV5T (I will also have a 12 cell battery) and have enough room for the power cords, ac adapter, and maybe a small book or two?

    Thanks in advance!

no issue so far, all dv5t drivers work on windows 7, if some on yours cannot works or give error, download the latest version. Of course im talking about running it on win7 with all drivers installed, it's beta so there must be some error on win7 :p

Hey, jojo. I hope you're still around. Thing is, I don't think the DTS codec works properly. The movie lags a little when using DTS on passthrough. I have my dv5t connected to a receiver through an USB soundcard. I tried this same USB card on another laptop with Windows XP and it works fine.

Only thing I can think of is to make sure you are using the latest drivers for the USB soundcard. Did you use drivers from supplied CD or did you get the latest from their website? Other than that I'm clueless  I never did use that type of device before.

Hey guys I am looking to buy one of these as soon as the next coupon is out.

    I have some questions...

    1. I know the infinity screen has more glare, but it should be fine indoors right? I don't expect to use the computer much outdoors. Also i read a thread where the OP found "dust" under his infinity display. The dust turns out to be the glue holding the glass on. Because many of you have had them for half a year, any dust buildup or comments on the infinity display?

    2. Also I am looking to purchase it with the 12 cell. I hear it raises the bottom a bit and helps with the heating problem. Any comments on this?

    3. Last question, how much battery life would i lose if i went for the 9600 instead of the integrated (While doing things like microsoft word). I have heard many things on this issue. The review tells me it may suffer a little. Yet i have also heard that the GPU won't use up any unnecessary power when it's not being "used" as in creating text docs etc. How much are we looking at here?

I apologize if any of this has been asked already. I will edit as i am reading page 13 at the moment...

Thanks in advance, this is an awesome site.

    1. The infinity display does have glare problems outside, but indoors, it's fine at the highest brightness level. I take mine to class with the lights on and I see things fine. For some people there are little particles. On mine, I have one tiny particle that you can't see at all unless you look hard. Don't know how that got in there, but maybe it was already there to begin with. I never checked. But the infinity display is really nice, it gives the computer a super nice slick look. Once you have it, you can't go back to the old bezeled look.

    2. Yes 12-cell will definately help with the heating problem as it raises the bottom by almost an inch. Also, battery life is awesome.

    3. You will suffer a little bit. I have a high-capacity 6-cell with a 9600m gt and I get about 2.5 hours on "powersaver" mode on full brightness, aero, wireless all one. 2.3 hours with bluetooth on. Plus I have the T-series Intel 2.53Ghz which would also eat up a lot of battery. This is surfing the internet and using microsoft word.

If you get the 12-cell I'd say you'd get about 4,5, or 6 hours depending on your settings.

    Thanks for the reply sendmarksmail.

Of course i won't be gaming unless it's plugged in. Thanks for your battery time stats, i appreciate it.

I'm having second thoughts on the infinity display. I had an ipod with an invisible shield on it. even a couple of tiny dust particles under the shield bothered me. Perhaps i'll check one out at bestbuy. I assume the stuff that gets under there (if at all) is about as noticeable as the typical dust buildup or so on screens. If it accumulates, i probably won't get it.

BTW does the power saving mode in vista really hurt the battery? I'm guessing not because people are saying "windows told me x, lol"....

    1. The Infinity Display is really just up to atheistic tastes -- I am a sucker for sexy laptops so naturally I got it with mine. :D Glare is not a problem at all indoors unless you have a light pointed directly at it, but outdoors can be a little tough -- especially with the brightness cranked down to conserve battery life. Although, one really good think about the Infinity Display is that it protects the screen well, so I don't have to yell at my buddies for sticking their fingers all over the screen. :D

    2. The 12-cell is definately worth it. Great battery life with the 12-cell (4+ hours on power saver :D ) , and it props up the back of the laptop so its more ergonomic and it cools off the HOT 9600m GT by allowing air to get the GPU exhaust. Probably one of the best upgrades I got with mine.

    3. I am not sure the exact battery life difference between the integrated graphics and the 9600m GT, but the integrated graphics will definately have slightly better battery life. If you want to game, battery life is negligible in regards to performance -- but if you are not going to game I would stick with integrated graphics or the 9200m GS for HD playback. The 9600m GT will automatically downclock when not in 3D applications like games (for regulating temperatures), but this will not increase battery life because it still uses the same voltage. If you have something like Powermizer this will lower the voltage of the GPU and save battery life. For increasing battery life with my 9600m GT I have undervolted, I downclock the CPU, I crank the brightness all the way down, and I will sometimes use Powermizer if I only plan on doing basic 2D applications. (I also downclock the GPU manually with RivaTuner to lower my GPU temperatures when using 2D applications).

    Hope this helps! :D

Yes it was very helpful thanks!
You say you get 4+ hours with undervolting and downclocking. I dunno if i would ever do that, but i assume a battery time of 3-4 hours will be sufficient. Messing with overclocking and stuff like that always sounds dangerous (ah, the days of tech tv + multiple warnings), like it's going to destroy my computer. I assume it can, but it's not too difficult right?

I think i'll get the infinity, i'm a sucker for sexy laptops too. Any flakes of glue or any other stuff stuck under there and how long have you had it? I assume the other guy was overreacting as many of you guys were making fun of him :D

Yeah I haven't really used it for long periods of time off the charger but I was probably at 4+ with about 25% still remaining, so maybe another hour or so.

As for undervolting, and underclocking/overclocking its not too difficult you just have to really read up on it and just be patient. Undervolting is really easy and it just uses a program (RMClock) instead off messing with your BIOS directly, so the risk of something bad happening is really low. Overclocking is more difficult and the most dangerous, but as long as your careful, patient, know what your doing, and make some backups you should be fine (but if you mess something up you are SOL! ) What I am trying to say is be very very careful!

Here are the links if you want to read up on them:

Yeah nice, i read your sig fast and was thinking 1280x800!
How is the size of the computer? I'll need to carry it and I have seen it recommended for students. I really want a 14 in...but none have graphics cards like the 9600m GT. I think most are 15-17in with this graphics card. All the pictures i've seen, save one flickr picture, has made it seem huge.

    edit: grkazan11...speaking of cheap laptops...

Haha...thats what I thought when I saw the DV5t on pictures, but its actually really sleek. I wouldn't say it small, but I don't notice it too much when I lug it around with me.

There is an ASUS out with a 9650m GT that is a 14", but I don't really know how much better the 9650m GT is over 9600m Gt -- probably not very much. Its a little more expensive than the DV5t, and I have read that it feels kinda heavy for a 14" laptop

Second, somebody needs to help me with this, my volume quick touches never work properly, i have tryed about everything. I think im reinstallling the right drivers but am not sure and i have tryed taking the battery out and powering it for a bit but hasn't helped. Always comes back, Im tired of the volume not working properly, anybody got any help...

    Getting internal temperature information question:

I just got a dv5t configure-to-order. The hard disk drive is a Fujitsu 250GB drive (as identified by device manager).

I ran HWMonitor from CPU-ID, but HWMonitor did not report the hard disk temperature. HWMonitor reported ACPI (motherboard, I assume), CPU, and GPU temperatures. I then tried HD-Tune. HD-Tune said my hard disk temperature was 0 degrees (!!!).

Any other suggestions for getting hard disk temperatures from the hard disk?

    Thanks!

hey, just got my dv5t on monday..dont quite love it yet, but im still getting used to it

is everyones battery still going strong? i bought the 12-cell battery, and its important to me that the battery doesnt start to have its charge weakened quickly..part of the reason i bought this laptop was because in a year, my old laptops battery would only hold a charge for about a minute..

another question is longevity..will this laptop hold up and still perform over time? im hoping that it will last me through college, so i want to be sure that it will, to know if i should keep it.. thanks

Ughhh, I think I might have messed up when I ordered my DV5T by simply not thinking about the resolution enough...

...so I have a question (and will call HP to see what they say since I might send it back unopened)...

I went with the 1680x1050 display since I thought "Hey, greater resolution for better look games, movies, fonts, etc" but then I realized...

...my 22" Samsung panel is 1680x1050! So does that mean that although games and movies will look better, Windows will look that much smaller?

Normally, the native resolution for a screen is set to make it look its best, but since they offer 2 resolutions, is it safe to assume that each will look equally great, one just a bit more precise since greater resolution?

Or will the 1680x1050 be very tiny when using normal Windows productivity software, programming, browsing, etc?

I saw the lower res in the stores as no models had the higher res, and never thought about checking it out first.

    Ughhh!

Yes things will appear smaller on a higher res screen, unless you change the Windows DPI setting. However that can cause problems with certain apps.. its getting better though, especially with Windows 7. :)

Most DV5 owners say the 1680x1050 is fine, and a few here and there say the text is too small.

I went with 1280x800 for a few reasons:
    *Cheaper
*Better res for games as it doesn't strain the card as much
*My eyes aren't the best in low light conditions, and 1280x800 looked fine in the store.

Looks like your Fujitsu drive lacks a temperature sensor, mine does as well so when I launch HWmonitor or HD tune I get no HDD temperature reading.

best of luck to you and your new laptop. Did you guys have a problem with the finger prints?
Btw is there realy that much of a difference with the 1680x1050 and 1280x800 screen?

    It's quite a difference..

    1280*800 = 1024000 pixels
    1680*1050 = 1764000 pixels

That is a 72% increase if my calculations are correct. :)

Whoa that a lot. Does it make a big difference in the whole 'screen' (reading, watching movies, etc) experience?

Yes,thats not the fault of the Monitoring Program. The Fujitsu HDD does not come with a Thermal sensor at all! Screw Hp.

    Hi,

i'am a new member in here and not know a lot about notebook
so i need Ur help :)

I want to buy new notebookfor me, becoz i want to give my first
notebook( lenovo y410 3000 ) to my bro. I' looking for 15" notebook
and i found 2 interesting notebook, HP DV5t and ASUS G50Vt-X1.

    My Budget is about $1300-$1500.

I am a gamer, I don't really need a high end notebook with expensive
price. But at least i want to play Crysis in my laptop.

    So i have a few question :
    1. Can u give me the dimension and weight of both notebook?

    2. Which one is more heavy? is it still in reasonable weight?
because sometimes i will use this notebook for travel.

    3. Between both laptop, which one is more cool? is the heat of
both laptop still reasonable? because i usually use notebook for
a long time to make program and to play a game. so if the
surface or maybe the keyboard feels warm, it feel not comfortable

    4. Which one is better in performance? because i need good notebook
for make a program using Visual Studio 2008 and same time i use it
to listening music or may be do another things in the same time.
And in the spare time in work, i want to use it to play games.

    5. if u don't mind, please give me the pros and cons about both.
I have seen the review, but i want to hear the user review
    from u all.

    6. How about both monitor quality? is it good? because i have read
    that X1 show average quality.

    7. How about both sound quality? is it good? because i have read
    that X1 show average quality.

    8. May be u can suggest me another type of notebook that better that
    both?

Actually i also like G50v-A1 / x2 but i don't like the orange color on
    that laptop.

Thanks for anyone whos answered it or read it. I really appreciate it.

Sorry for may bad english. English is not may native language

i dont know about ASUS but i will answer about dv5t :

    3. it will got pretty HOT so i suggest u use it with a Cooler Pad, yes, it is HOT, not warm if u play game, the temp may go up 80-90 C

    4. dv5t can handle it pretty well

    6. the dv5t screen is good, bright and colorful

    7. dv5t sound is just average, cannot compare to my old compaq

    8. i think dv5t is a good choice, good design, high performance, if u use it with a cooler pad than there is no problem, it just a little warm

Posting an update on my DV5

It's still chugging along............. 24/7 as a surveillance video server.

One comment about the standard rez screen. IMO, it doesn't do too well for DVD video playback. Black levels really suck.

    cheers
