    Either that or I just got lucky, probably just got lucky.... I would say try again a lot of times even though one person wont help you another might, especially in telephone service.

    Is that since the HP laptop techs told us that there is absolutely no way xfire will ever work?

    What kind of clicking is it? Does it sound like it is coming from inside the laptop or is it a loose piece of plastic on the outside?

    * HP Color Matching Keyboard
    * No Modem
    * FREE Upgrade to Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    * Webcam Only
    * No TV Tuner w/remote control

    The question i have is, how do you create restore disks and make a clean install of Vista on the laptop. I have done it for my desktop at home but it came with a clean XP install disk from Dell. I have ordered a Symantec Restore disk from HP, but i want to do a clean install like the one i did for my Desktop so that i dont install any bloatware. Any help would be appreciated.

    DDR2 and DDR3 slots are not compatbale, so youre stuck with DDR2, and since the cpu has an onboard DDR2-800 memory controller you really wouldnt be helping anything with different RAM.

    I'm looking at current deal on HP.com for DV5z and Dv5t and want to know what is performance difference between dv5z and dv5t ? I'm looking at T5800Core 2 Duo for DV5t compared to AMD Turion(TM) X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor RM-70. Both will have blu ray player. Do you think DV5z provides any advantage over dv5t in terms of bluray playback and performance.
    One more thing I dont game on my laptop so gaming perfomance is least important to me. Yes if it plays bluray it is more important as well as multitasking as will be using it for programming work as well as digital image editing.

    What is performance difference betwen Turion RM-70 and ZM-80 ?

    mjoshi: The ATI GPU in the dv5z is going to run cooler than the NVIDIA GPU in the dv5t while playing Blu-ray video so I'd lean heavily towards the z. Upgrade to the 3450 GPU if you want, mostly because that also gets you gigabit Ethernet (if you have a file server/NAS you'll care), but the 3200 plays Blu-ray perfectly. RM-70 vs. ZM-80: you get double the L2 cache in the ZM-80, which helps a little but nothing earth shattering. If you have a little money left over by all means step up to the ZM-82. The RM-70 should be the minimum you accept though.

    Thanks for your response, I do rely more on ATI compared to Nvidia after current mess with nVidia cards. Also I'm never gonna play any games on this machine so I dont care about video card to much. Question I've is how big is performance difference between Core 2 Duo T5800 (with integrated graphics) and AMD Turion X2 RM-70 with ATIHD 3200 Radeon.

    On paper the T5800 beats the RM-70, but take it with a grain of salt because the RM-70 is a much better CPU. T5800 is an old Intel CPU, whereas RM-70 is fairly recent and has full speed RAM 400Mhz DDR2-800 compared to a 166Mhz FSB to the RAM on the T5800. Now that Intel is copying AMD's cpu design people are likely to start optimizing software to use that high speed RAM. Thats why AMD servers work so well, because the software has been optimized incredibly to use the full speed RAM. Right now Intel stuff wins from performance of huge caches on die to buffer their slow RAM speeds.

    AMD stuff usually gets better with time due to optimization.

    The AMD IGP works so well because of the RM-7x and ZM-8x has hypertransport 3.0, which is an amazing 3600Mt/s data transfer rate between the Northbridge(GPU) and the CPU that has the full speed RAM controller. Intel doesnt have that.

    The only good thing Intel has done with all their money and resources is finally make a cpu that is only 25 watts. Otherwise Intel has been stagnant with their inovation even while moving to the 45nm manufacturing. AMD has better innovation and engineering in my opinion. That said, I got the 25watt cpu, because I wanted great battery life and it also came with the low power DDR3, otherwise Intel has been useless. I did get the AMD graphics though, because Intel graphics still blow too, and Nvidia annoys me. My desktop is still a dual Athlon MP and an AGP ATI X1950Pro, which the system RAM speed is now limiting me in gaming, so I'm going to upgrade to a Deneb system as soon as the 45nm Deneb Phenom cpus are out. I built my parents an awesome Athlon X2 45watt cpu with crossfire graphics, and it sips power, its great and its fast even only with HT1.0.

    Okay guys my order got canceled for some reason. But now i want to know if the AMD Turion™ X2 Ultra ZM-80 is better than the P7350. I'm looking at a Lenovo Laptop with Core 2 Duo L7500 and a Toshiba with a P8400. Also, can you upgrade the graphics card on a laptop or not? I knew that you couldnt but i read an article somewhere that said you could so im confused.

    The P7350 and P8400 have the advantage of only being 25 watts compared to 32watts on the ZM-80 or 35 watts on any higher AMD, so in a way yes the P series Intel better for battery life. I have one, but at the same time if battery life was not a concern I would not have hesitated to get a ZM-80 to save money, because I prefer AMD's cpus. Because of their full speed RAM the AMD cpus at lower speeds are still usually better at most gaming when the CPU is needed. Performance is unnoticeable difference on every day tasks. The Intel might compress an MP3 file like 5 seconds faster.

    You cannot upgrade graphics inside a laptop on probably 99% of laptops. The ones that you can you can only use maybe one or two other cards that are compatable. So dont count on upgrading.

    Upgrading of graphics card is not an option on 99% of laptops. Also if you are not going to game on your laptop probably dont worry about graphics card.

    I am having problem with my display after I exit out of Counter Strike: Source. The top half of the screen has these static colors squares popping up and flickering non-stop. The only work-around I have found is to adjust the resolution and switch back to the normal resolution.

    Is anyone else having this problem?

    I wonder if the 3650 also comes with Gigabit Ethernet like the 3450 does, it is interesting that they don't make that distinction any longer.

    The 3450 made absolutely every bit of sense in a Puma laptop with hybrid xfire, but alas.........

    And now HP came out with the DV3z which looks great. LED display, and the HD3200 IGP has its own dedicated 64MB VRAM, awesome. even lowest prices on 6 and 8GB RAM. Good for HP and AMD.

    Finally we see the display cache (or sideport memory) in a laptop, what a performance boost for the IGP, and allows lower power states when in use.

    An holy cow, a new DV2 with Athlon NEO and HD3410 graphics?

    Yeah, the dv3z looks pretty nice; I just saved a configuration on their web site. I still prefer having a 1680x1050 display though.

    With so many models to choose from, it's amazing they still don't have all the features I want in a single model.

    i read through all these pages regarding the dv5z after my purchase. there was a post about the % amount of free space on your hard drive to leave free so it can perform better. can any1 tell me tht threshold %, cuz i cant find tht post anymore. also, any updates on hybrid graphics. i have bought the dv5z and thought i could install the hd3450/3470 in addition to my hd3200.i cannot find the MXM slot however to add the additional graphics card. and there is the issue of bios locks as well. hope for any replies soon.

    You cannot find an MXM slot because there isn't one ;) ... you cannot upgrade the graphics on any HP DV5 model so if yours came with the integrated HD3200 graphics (which in anyway cannot be upgraded as it is built into the motherboard) you are stuck with what you have.

    Hi, was wondering if someone could help me with my webcam.

    It doesn't seem to be working properly, or I'm not sure if something is blocking it.
    I try to use it at chat.aim.com, but the light ontop by the webcam will go on for about 2-3 seconds, and then just turn off.
    And it sometimes messes up with regular AIM. It'll go on, then turn off.

    So i'm not sure if something it blocking it, or I need to download extra.

    Just trying to save a few dollars instead of going out and buying a new seperate webcam.
    Thanks.

    It'll do fine for video editing. You'll want to buy an external HD for raw video storage at some point, preferably an eSATA drive. Are you talking DVD res or HD? Either will work.

    If you'd have bought the Radeon 3450 upgrade option you could in theory use both that and the integrated Radeon 3200 together in Hybrid Crossfire mode. Unfortunately HP chose not to enable that feature. For video editing the plain ol' Radeon 3200 is fine. It'll even play Blu-ray if you add an external Blu-ray drive later like I did.

    Nikon,

    It looks like the dv6t is the replacement for the dv5t. There is only "0.6" screen size between the two. Any reason why you are not considering the dv6t?

    Probably because he said it was intended for gaming, to which the dv6t's 9200M is not really the best choice.

    And I like the fact that the dv5z is taller vertically.
    So what did you guys think? Do you regret getting the dv5z?

    Overall, yes I regret it. The lack of PowerExpress is disappointing (I didn't really care about Hybrid Crossfire, but that's obviously lacking too). If you are clear that it has the feature set you're looking for, then it's probably fine.

    I also would have rather had an LED-backlit display and a backlit keyboard, and now I regret not having waited for more options along those lines to hit the market.

    If it were me I'd get the DV3z, unless it were for gaming. Lack of PowerXpress is disappointing, but not a whole lot of notebooks have it. mine does somehow with an Intel IGP using an AMD driver and the HD3470.

    The DV3z has the IGP HD3200 but with a 64MB of display cache for dedicated VRAM, so better performance, and enables more low power states when not moving anything on the screen. LED screen standard too.

    I have the 3450 and I use it to play counterstrike Source, combat arms, sim city 4, with an external monitor 1680X1050 rez. It does get hot, but i just propped up the back to get better airflow. Also, i use the fusion utility that AMD has for download, i dunno if it helps any, but i figure it wouldn't hurt. Hopefully that answers your question

    Hi...

    new owner of an hp dv5z-1000us...i've been able to successfully downgrade from vista to xp (no yellow exclamation points in the device manager). the only issue i have is that the computer will not standby or hibernate. it just freezes...more or less...and nothing happens. I have to pull the battery to get it going again.

    i did a search, and didn't see anything similar to this.

    has anyone had any issues with standby or hibernate functions after downgrading to xp? thanks...

    Ive never been a fan of hibernate or sleep in anything from 98ME to XP, always flaky in every computer I tried, maybe it would work for a month and then freezing, not resuming, etc.... Although so far in Vista its been working great on both of my computers. On my desktops I learned to just use standby in XP. Its a little more difficult with a laptop when you want to save battery.
