Yeah, I like DV5z, but I like the DV4z better w/ LED display, almost bought one today. That is a good price, and the integrated graphics are as good as those Nvidia low ends, so it saves on weight and price. If you plan to fly with it or be mobile get the 12 cell battery too, with the $30 off the combo :)

Has anyone ordered a DV5z with just the HD3200 and added an HD3450 and see if it installed and xfire worked, since the bios obviously already recognizes IGP. I searched for a mobility 3450 and couldnt find but maybe someone has an in with HP to get some boards and give it a shot. Or flashed the bios of the one with HD3450 to the bios for the HD3200 only notebook?

I just ordered a Lenovo T400 with an HD3470 256MB GDDR3 which can switch to Intel IGP 4500HD on the fly to save battery, and at the same time it has 25 watt cpu, 1.5V DDR3 vs 1.8V DDR2, and a WXGA+ LED.

I assume the T500 is the same and can come with HD3650 for good gaming, but it only had a WXGA LED for some reason so I didnt get it. The Sony's have done it for a while, but they cost more. black friday coupons stacked for lenovo, instant savings + 15% off laptop and warranty and 20% off accessories which made it affordable. I saved more than $100 just getting 1GB DDR3, and ordering 4GB as accesories :) However then RAM is not covered under warranty I bought. Me calling it in took like 40 minutes, because of poor communication/understanding with lenovo rep, but saved me $85 too. I'm AMD fan but Intel did this one thing right with 25 watt cpus, otherwise Intel is useless, and at least I got AMD graphics.

Otherwise I was about 10 seconds away from buying the HP DV4z, which is attractive, but only WXGA LED again, OK for 14" maybe, but not a 15.4". HPs instant savings and coupons didnt stack, but I could have gotten a little more military/student discount if calling it in, which would have made it good.

What's the difference between the Ultra Mobile Turion X2 and the "regular" Turion X2?

    (RM-70 or RM-72 vs ZM-82)

I mean is the difference that noticeable to justify the price difference?

THAT IS NOT TRUE, dont mislead people when you dont know.

The only difference is the amount of L2 cache, there is 1MB per core on the ZM Ultra Models and only 512kb per core on the RM models.

The ZM-80 is rated for max of 32 watts, the RM-70 is 31 Watts, all the others are 35watts.

The performance difference is slight, although there is one, and it could be more significant on future programs. AMD runs their programs out of their at speed DDR2-800 RAM, with the fast HT 3.0, so the cache is not as important for AMD cpus as Intels which get much better with a boost from 1Mb to 2Mb L2 cache. That is because intel's FSB is actually a quarter of the speed they say, so 800Mhz Intel FSB is actually 800Mt/s at 200Mhz "quad pumped"
So the Intel programs benefit a lot from having that ultra fast buffer between the CPU and RAM, and the increase in RAM speed is pointless because even at 1333Mt/s they are 333Mhz which DDR2-667 can handle.

Unfortunately, if you want CrossfireX, then the dv5z doesnt look like its going to get it anytime soon. However, Toshiba offers the A305D-S6886 with the HD3470 & the 3100 series IGP which in some ways is better than what HP would have offered with the dv5z even if they enabled CrossfireX....

Thats the thing, you can't access the IGP when ordering one with the HD3450, which is moronic. HP is just retarded for this huge mistake. Another display of how AMD gets a bad rap, because system builders build the systems crappy with less R&D for the budget lines. That is why I think if you flashed one with a HD3450 with the bios from a regular HD3200 notebook, then you could probably install the HD3450 in windows. Even if the bios doesnt see the HD3450 initially, if HP was evil enough to that, I think Windows could see the graphics port after it boots up on the IGP.

That Toshiba A305 w/ xfire looks really good.

A better one would be the Fujitsu sa3650, with just IGP and a XGP, external PCI-E2.0 x8 port to plug in an HD3870, or better in the future. But havent seen them out at all.

    i have a *stupid* question
    someone that has a HD 3450 in a dv5z
if the 3450 is a MXM module
    check search wikipedia about MXM
it should be fairly easy to take it out
then boot the laptop, the laptop might boot into onboard HD 3200
then windows should see both graphics card

why? its basicly a 780G desktop chipset and i know that if you remove a discrete card it will default to the onboard one :)

in january am planing to buy a DV7-1090, its basicly a EU version of dv5z

    specs of it
    AMD Turion™ X2 Ultra ZM-80
    3072 MB (1 x 1024 MB + 1 x 2048 MB)
    500 GB SATA-harddisk 5400 rpm
    17” WXGA 1440x900 screen
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 with 256MB
    Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD±R/RW
    802.11 Pre-N & Bluetooth

btw hp have big savings now on
    shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/store_access.do?template_type=cto_config&config_id=LOWEST&bomProductId=KS878AV&aoid=11232&srccode=cii_5766179&cpncode=23-10808502-2

i have noticed after my research ;)

The only HP laptop that i know of that had an MXM slot was the HDX 20". If you look at the pictures i took a while back, you'll see the internals of the board. According to http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Table.html , you can see what notebooks have an MXM slot.

    Two quick questions:

    1. Does anyone have a software tweak or something so that the built in touch pad will not "click" unless you push the actual button? My right hand constantly pushes or moves the cursor when i'm typing! (why didn't hp move the touchpad 1 inch to the left?)

    2. Has anyone used rivatuner or something to try and overclock their 3450 graphics card?

    Thanks, J! :)

Turion Ultras have better power management than regular Turions too. Mine is idling at ~550MHz (2.75x multiplier), 0.8V core, well below what older Turions do. I highly recommend spending a few $ more for one.

HP notebooks with the Radeon 3450 use different motherboards. The GPU is soldered to the board. On the bright side they also give you gigabit Ethernet too which is one of the better reasons to upgrade.

X2 Ultra ZM got 2MB L2 Cache (2x1024kb), HyperTransport 3.0, CoolCore, Independent Dynamic Core Technology, Mobile Optimized Memory Controller
X2 RM got 1MB L2 Cache (2x512kb), HyperTransport 3.0, CoolCore, Independent Dynamic Core Technology, Mobile Optimized Memory Controller
    X2 QL got 1MB L2 Cache (2x512kb), HypeTransport 1.0
    TL got 1MB L2 Cache (2x512kb), HypeTransport 1.0

if you want a Puma then you have to go ZM or RM, why? Mobile Optimized Memory Controller, CoolCore, HyperTransport 3.0 is Puma cpu

    update: i tested the DV7-1080 in a local store with 3dmark03 and i got 3993 3dmarks
this is with norton internet security 2008

btw there is a good reason to get 3450 to, why? it dosnt share memory with system memory, and has gigabit like the other dude said

    specs of it
    AMD Turion™ X2 Ultra ZM-80
    3072 MB (1 x 1024 MB + 1 x 2048 MB)

    HD 3450 on DV7-1090

you see the 3450 has double the bandwith of HD 3200 32-bit bus vs 64-bit bus
ignore the bandwith on hd 3200 its a bug

    3dmark03
    2683 3dmarks on my HD 3200 (X2 2.0ghz/2GB(1+1) DDR2 PC6400 in Dual Channel)

Brian...he is right, the only difference between the RM and ZM's is the cache. They have the same power saving features. The QL Athlons on the other hand can only go down to [email protected] but these still have the same HT3.0 along with independant clock/voltage control just like the RM Turions and the Ultras.

Here's the thermal spec sheet for all of the newer Griffin cpu's...

Another difference between RM/ZM Turions and QL Athlon is the memory controller; The QL Athlon are limited to DDR2 667, whereas the RM/ZM Turions accept DDR2 800.

Yeah, I think that is completely understood, there was just a misunderstanding the difference between RM and ZM. The only difference is size of cache.

There are a lot of differences between QL, TL, etc. to the newer RM and ZM. I wouldnt buy an AMD laptop that is not an RM or ZM, unless I could get a cheap TL-66/68 cpu (because for sure a tyler core version) that does have DDR2-800 controller.

How does the HD3450 perform? I currently own a Compal HEL80 with a GF 7600 Go 256MB DDR2 350/350 MHz, how does the HD3450 compare to that?

I like the DV5z primarily because of the 1080x1050 screen and 12cell battery options, but would like to know if I can throw the occasional game at it.

I have an HD3470 in my desktop, and it plays DX9 games really well. However it is a GDDR3 256MB card, which is the only difference I think.

I play AOEIII, all expansions on mostly high settings. The T400 I just ordered has the HD3470 too.

Well, I' m a little dissapointed... my current machine got 7307 in 3dmark03 at stock speeds, and it is already slow for some games.

Still, I want to get a Puma laptop, and the DV5z looks very good. Too bad HP decided to ditch Hybrid Crossfire and PowerXpress.

Just picked one of these up on Black Friday. I haven't had a laptop for the last couple years since my crappy Dell Inspiron caused me to lose all confidence in laptops.

This deal was just to good to pass up. In addition to the free hardrive, ram, webcam fingerprint scanner upgrades, free shipping,$150 instant rebate, I also found a $30 internet coupon code, and got $25 cashback when I purchased with my credit card. The total came to $495.

I was originally going to get a netbook which would have been almost the same cost.

    Some Questions I have:
    >Has anyone actually used the fingerprint scanning function? It seems like a gimmick to me, but I am curious as to how well it works.
    >Also would this wireless N card be compatible? intel Wifi 5300 MIMO 802-11N Wireless N Mini PCI-E-Card I would post a link but this forum will not allow me to. It is selling for $5 with free shipping from ebay.
    >Anyone have experience playing DoD:source, and CoD4 on these things? I didn't get it to play games, but after hearing these reviews it seems like it may be able to.

For what it's worth - my contact at HP passed my questions on to the notebook team, and their reply was very explicit - Hybrid Crossfire and PowerExpress are not mandatory features for Puma laptops, and they must be designed into the motherboards to be supported. None of the HP AMD Puma laptops have these features; there is no way to enable them by any BIOS upgrade etc.

    Sorry for the bad news.

uwwmatt: HP has a whitelist in the BIOS that locks out "unapproved" internal WiFi cards, so you're probably stuck with what they gave you. Technically you could look up the approved part # in the service manual or on partsurfer.hp.com and see what turns up on eBay.

Don't be too worried, althought the 7600 is a little more powerful, if you used 3dmark07 or 08 the numbers would start to converge, as the hardware in the 3450 is designed to work differently than anything in 2003 did.

And do you have a 7600 or a 7600GT? If it was the GT then it would be much better.

If you want a Puma laptop that works correctly get the Toshiba A305 with Hybrid Crossfire, its like $700.

    Ok long story short.
My laptop specs: zm 80, 2gig ram, 250 gig hd, 1600 x1200 rez screen, HD 3450 dgp, wireless g, 64bit vista.

What I am currently having built for me from HP for no additional charge for trade, that I will have in my hands by the end of next week:

Core 2 p 8400, 4gig ram, 320 gig hd, nvidia geforce 9600 gt, 1600 x 1200 rez screen, wireless/n with bluetooth, bronze upgrade from black, vista 64 bit.

This is how I did it, I spent 6 hours with tech support trying to explain to them that the computer supports hybrid crossfire, and there needs to be a bios upgrade, finally after promises from tech support they would tell me how to fix it, which they failed to do, they decided to go a head and let me exchange it for a "comparing model". This is what I told them that I think got the exchange. I said this would be like me going and buying a car that says it has air conditioning. The manufacturer then installed the actual air conditioning unit but does not put the knobs in the car for me to turn it on, would you be happy with that car purchase? They agreed with my argument. I love AMD and ATI, but this trade up was WAY better, after finding benchmarks and even here on notebook review the 9600gt is 3x faster than the HD 3450. Even with hybrid crossfire it will only increase fps by 60% in some cases, leaving it lacking to the 9600 gt. I would recommend that everyone like me that bought the computer for hybrid crossfire, exchange for the dv5t, like I said free no cost to me for the upgrade, I paid 760 for my laptop and for 2 months of messing with hp got a 1300 dollar laptop. It is your call, but I say make the trade. I will try to post benchmark comparisons of the two when I get the dv5t.

i just installed 4gb RAM in my laptop. I'm using Vista Home Premium 32-bit so I knew that all 4gb won't be available to me. However, System utility from Control Panel is showing 4GB. But when I open Task Manager the physical memory is only 2,095,992 K. I thought physical memory was same as RAM. Everest shows number for physical memory. Where are the other 2GB?

Yes, I think over the last few months, we have relunctantly come to the same conclusion. Thanks for confirming it, at least unofficially

It would still be interesting to see if someone that has a DV5z with the HD3450 flashed their bios with the bios from one without the HD3450 and see if it recognizes the HD3200, because it is there, and I doubt they disabled it in hardware. Then when windows boots would it recognize the HD3450. That would be interesting although not good for a novice, maybe someone with the accidental damage coverage :)

Both versions use the same BIOS.

Honestly, if you care about GPU performance I'd look at ASUS's M51 with Turion Ultra ZM-82 and Radeon 3650 over at Newegg. It's too bad there's no Blu-ray or 12 cell battery option but it comes with just about everything else. HP has made it abundantly clear that they just don't care about building AMD machines with a high performance GPU. I'm happy with my dv4-1155se, which is on sale at Best Buy again this week, but I've given up gaming. Makes a great portable Blu-ray player though.

I was looking at the M51ta before, but it's BIOS is so buggy some people have to remove the battery when on AC so it works "properly", there a tons of truoble with screen not coming back after sleep, video card (integrated or discrete) no being recognized after sleep, fan not working as it should, etc. etc.

Also, it is not Linux friendly at all, again because of the broken BIOS.

Nice, I like it. You even get a 12 cell battery so battery life should not be an issue. How long do you usually get with the 12 cell.

However, the spec sheet does not say anything about it having a Blu-ray player on it. ???

Close to 5 hours for the usual web browsing.

No Blu-ray player, but a LG desktop drive and eSATA to SATA cable works. Or USB to SATA, tried that too. Ideally I'd recommend buying a configure-to-order model from HP so you don't have to lug around an external optical drive. Get a LED screen instead of Infinity too. I wanted to abuse Best Buy's financing so I compromised.

(Hope this hasn't been answered 70 times already in this thread, I read it from front to back. )

Hello everyone, I'm very close to buying this notebook but I'm still confused about a few things.

Which is more important in this laptop: processor or GPU?

    Should I get the RM-70 (2.0 ghz, 1MB L2 Cache) and the HD3450
    or
    the ZM-82 (2.2 ghz, 2MB L2 Cache) and the HD3200?

(Right now there's a free upgrade to 3GB o' ram and I'll be using 32-bit Vista)
The most intensive apps I use are Battlefield 2, CS:S, and possibly COD4 or Left4Dead on low settings.

(TL;DR: CPU vs GPU for multitasking and light gaming?)

I got the dv5z laptop with the 3450, and the zm-80 processor. I will tell you this. If I could do it all over again, i would buy a better video card. I would look at the Asus with the 3650. As for the processor, i don't really notice what the processor is or whether the one i got is a good one or a bad one. I do feel like the laptop is a little sluggish at times, I guess i got the slower processor? mmm...anyhow...the two main mistakes i regret getting this laptop is...

    1. I wish i had gotten a better graphics card!!!
    2. I should have gotten the 12 cell, i eventually shelled out $130 bucks for the 12 cell just recently, and i love my laptop now!!!

    To give more details.

If you play any games at all, the video card is important. I thought to myself, well i don't play Crysis or any super intensive video games, just WoW, so I don't need a big bad video card. I was actually going to go w/ the 3200, but decided to get teh 3450 just so i'd have a little more than i need. Well, you know what? even the 3450 isn't enough if you're playing any games. WoW runs fine, but i then tried to play, World in Conflict, Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun, Command and Conquer, REd alert, heroes of might and magic v, all in search of a cool strategy game. What i found is that even though these games run, you can't turn on all the eye candy, and if you're going to enjoy the game, have it play smoothly, you'll want to have that better video card. w/ the 3450, i can't game at high resolutions, which makes me wonder, well jason why'd you get the 1680x1050 screen if you have to lower the resolution to play any games smoothly? sigh...long story short, get yourself the best video card you can afford if you like to play games, i considered myself a casual gamer and thought i could get away w/ not having a super video card, but i regret it now.
having said that, i'll move on to my other gripe...

a 6 cell will have you tethered to the power cord all the time. you can get decent run time if you turn down the brightness on the screen and do other things, but then, , using the laptop sucks!! i want to be able to use my laptop at full brightness and full cpu and watch a whole movie darnit!! and to do that you need a 12 cell, so do yourself a favor and get the 12 cell when you buy your laptop. it also make a nice handle to pick up and carry your laptop. and it puts your laptop at an angle so typing is better and it doesn't generate as much heat!

Maybe if HP had implemented crossfire with the 3450 it would have met your requirement, but alas they did not.

well, the 9600gt cost 3x more than the 3450
    it makes sense ;)

another reason why did you buy a 760 laptop when you should have gotten a 1300 in the first place? ;)
the price is nearly twice, so a hint the speed will be doubled as well

my reason(s) to get a laptop is
    1. blu-ray
    2. portablity
    3. small size
    4. easy to get with me if am gonna help someone with a PC

and desktop pcs are the only pcs for gaming, no laptop can come close to dual 4870 X2s in crossfire with a Quad Core

    Hey, this is sorta random.

I got my laptop a few months back.
And this problem occurred about 2-3 weeks after I got it.

My touchpad doesnt click anymore. What i'm saying is, I can't click links or anything with it. And when I first got it, it did.
Not sure if something got turned off or maybe a malfunction.
But now I have to actually use the clickers.

Nothing big. But just wondering if anyone knew what was wrong.

If anyone knows, please give me some advice.

    Thanks.

Ok, I don't know if I clearly explained this. The $1300 dollar laptop I just got, I got for no additional charge. So I got it for the $760 that I paid for the dv5z. That is why I didn't buy it in the first place, because I didn't have the extra $540 dollars to spend on it. So long story short, after a few months of having the dv5z, than complaining a little bit, HP gave me a $540 dollar upgrade for free.

As far as speed differences go. I was not able to do a lot of benchmarking, but I will tell you what I noticed with all games I ran on both of them. Left 4 Dead would run on the dv5z but at lowest rez, and medium settings for about 40 - 50 fps average. The dv5t will run at 1280 X 800 at medium high settings, at about 50 fps average. So considerable leap there in terms of speed. Also, the same was true for Company of Heroes, and the rest of the valve games. They would all run on the dv5z but on lower to lowest rez, and medium settings, the dv5t will run them higher rez higher settings, and usually faster fps. I was also able to get Call of Duty: World at War to run very nice on the dv5t as well, but low rez and medium settings for that game.

Anyway, this is going to probably be my last post on here, unless anyone has any questions for me, seeing how I do not have the dv5z anymore. Honestly though peeps, if you have the dv5z and are not happy with it, perhaps do what I did and hopefully you can get what I did in exchange. My only gripe with the dv5t is while gaming the bottom of the laptop gets EXTREMELY hot, and yes a lot hotter than the dv5z. Anyway take care all, and wish you all luck on getting the hybrid crossfire and powerplay to work, because personally I still want to see it done.

I called HP, but they did not do anything for me. Thrikreen, you must have some good negotiating skills or something!
