They are probably moving onto the 16:9 screens like they did with the dv7t or they might just discontinue these and bring a 16" notebook as replacement.

Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
I am supposed to get my dv5z by march 13th , I don't really fancy a discontinue product.
-
Is the dv5z discontinued? I can no longer customize one on HP's website. My friend was just about to buy one too!
-
Unfortunately HP decided to discontinue the dv5z series (just like the did the dv5t series a few months back). Some people in this thread are speculating that it was done because LCD manufacturers are not making the 16:10 ratio screens anymore therefore once HP's stock was exhausted they discontinued the series. The dv5t(15.4" screen) was replaced with the dv6t(16" screen) and I assume HP will do the same eventually for the AMD based version.
-
brianstretch Notebook Virtuoso
The dv4z and dv7z disappeared too. HP may just be reserving the dv4z, dv5z, and dv7z for retail where AMD does best but new screens and new Radeon 4000 series dedicated GPU options make sense. The dv3z might be the permanent replacement for the dv4z though? HP has an awful lot of model lines these days.

I was wondering if anyone could do me a big favor.
My cam works with AIM (sometimes lol), but it has never worked in aim chat rooms.
Chat.aim.com
I was going to see if anyone could go to that place, go into a chat, and try and see if there cam works.
I've tried everything possible that I know of, but it still doesn't seem to work.
My aim is Jukst3r, so if you can do it. Reach me there or here.
Thanks. -
There is a new BIOS released for the dv5z version F.31
Enhancements: Resolves an intermittent issue where a bootable device is lost when powering up or restarting the system. -
I am posting for a friend who has a Dv5z. Will it change anything if I uninstall Cyberlink Youcam? Also, is there a way I can make it so it doesn't pop up every time I do a skype call without uninstalling it? Thanks!
-
Hello everyone!
I am new here and have just completed reading through all the wonderful posts here. I see that someone posted that the dv3z I think comes with LED backlit screen. Does anyone know if there is a compatible LED screen for our dv5z laptops with 15.4" screen? -
I was wondering if someone could help me out, and maybe you already knew this. But I know that you have been trying to get the Hybrid Crossfire and Powerplay to work on our beloved dv5z's. I was just playing around in my power settings under vista and noticed that I have a 'ATI Graphics Power Settings', here is the menu broken down:
-ATI Graphics Power Settings
-ATI POWERPLAY(tm) Settings
On Batttery: Optimal Battery Life
Plugged in: Optimal Performance
Is this one of the options we need to go back and forth between the HD3200 and the HD3450?
I'm sorry if this has already been discussed, but after reading over 1,100 posts my mind is about to melt. -
Unfortunately hybrid crossfire is not what powerplay is all about. Essentially ATI powerplay dynamically adjusts a gpu's core clock speed(in effect slowing it down) while a notebook is not plugged into a power source, doing this causes the gpu to draw less power and it also lowers performance. It also allows a notebook to lower it's LCD brightness levels while not plugged in to a power source. These 2 measures allows a powerplay equipped gpu to save energy while a notebook is unplugged. All modern ATI GPUs support some version of powerplay.
Hybrid crossfire on the other hand is the combination of 2 physical GPUs, a dedicated one and the onboard IGP in the chipset. AFAIK hp have designed the dv5z line without this combination and there is no way to enable it; you either have integrated graphics with the HD3200 or you have a dedicated card like the HD3450 or HD3670 but no combination of the two.
Therefore the only thing we have is powerplay and based on your settings it is setup correctly for optimal battery life while on battery and max performance while plugged in.
Hope this explanation helps you... -
That did clear up my understanding between the differences in Crossfire and Powerplay. In the beginning I thought that they were related and then seeing that setting in Power Options made me excited to think that maybe with the latest BIOS release from HP that they opened the doors. Alas, we are left with battery draining chips. It is sad how HP is not willing to allow us access to crossfire.
The other thing I'm disappointed in is the lifespan of my "high capacity" 6 cell battery. I'm curious how long the standard 6 cell lasts? My high cap 6 cell lasts around 1.5 hours, any one else seeing better run times with their high cap battery? How much more run time are people here seeing with the 12 cell battery?
Thank you everyone and thanks for a great forum! -
I've tweaked my dv5z to get about 3 hours of battery life. I'm only using a Standard 6-cell battery. When i got mine the 12 wasn't out yet. It's in one of my college classes where there aren't outlets so i'm only using Word and minor internet surfing, minimal brightness, and i disabled a lot of extra background processes.

anyone tried windows 7 on this dv5z series?

WinFlash for HP Notebook Multimedia Button Board Firmware (ROM) SP42435
I downloaded and installed this. It upgraded the button board firmware from version 24 to 25. Then shutdown it shutdown the laptop, so make sure you close everything first.
The touch buttons seem to be more responsive and I don't have the annoying volume problem where it keeps clicking even though I have stopped touching the buttons. -
Looks like HP has released a new BIOS update: F.32 for the dv5z-1000 CTO. Here is what HP claims is the enhancement:
# Corrects some words for multi-language support.
# Resolves an issue where the system boots into the e-SATA hard drive when resuming from Hibernation (S4) mode.
System is running fine here, no noticeable change, but then again I don't have an e-SATA hard drive either. -
Not only have HP updated the Bios but they have also released a new ATI driver package... catalyst 8.12
-
I was wondering if anyone has 3D marked their DV5Z?
-
-
For anyone running XP... does your eSata still work? Is there a comparable driver for it from the 6735?
-
I can't get my sound working though. -
Wondering if anyone else has this problem, updated my DV5 BIOS to F32 and now I can't change the order/priority in the BIOS for boot. When I try to change the value I just get the beep sound and no change.
I can manually select what to boot from by hitting Esc on POST then select boot options, but that means every time I boot the laptop I need to do that. Has anyone else experienced this?
My boot options in bios look weird too, have a look.
-
Yup I just checked mine and the same thing is happening and I am on F.32 as well; I cannot change the boot order in the bios. When I try to change it all I get are loud beeps! I also wonder what that 3 below the options means!?
-
Evolution, thanks for checking.
I was afraid I somehow messed up the BIOS update. It's kind of annoying not being able to change those setting now, wounder if HP purposely did this. I can't fathom what the 3 would mean...odd -
Hopefully this issue will be fixed in the next bios update...
-
On a completely separate note, the finish is peeling off my notebook, by the right side palmrest area. So much for durability of the Imprint or whatever they called it.
-
Hmm that is interesting looking at the imprint finish I would never guess that it could wear off. The lid on the dv5 is quite resistant to scratches etc it is the most durable notebook finish I have ever seen.
The worst that has happened with mine as I am sure has happened to about anyone who owns a dv5 is that it is a magnet for smudges and fingerprints.
Perhaps you could call HP and complain although I doubt such a thing will be covered under warranty. -
Hi Compax2405,
I just checked my BIOS and I was able to change my boot order, save and exit and restart and change the BIOS boot order again. I'm also not seeing the 3 at the bottom of my options. I'm running F.32. Not much more I can lend. But if you have any questions let me know and I can do more digging into my BIOS. -
Ah, yes, the never ending quest to keep fingerprints off the laptop. It is nearly impossible. Especially for the touchpad. My top cover never had a chance with my kids. I have a 3 yo girl and a 7 yo boy and the first thing they did to this one once I took it out of the box was stick an American flag sticker on it. Which was a lot better than my previous HP. It was christened with Fairly Odd Parents stickers. lol, gotta love children!
-
-
-
I'm also on F.32 and I verified I am able to change boot order, save, exit, and change it again later after reboot.

Hey, out of curiosity, how many IDE Channels are listed under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers? I have 8 IDE Channels and then the Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller and Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller.
I just want to make sure I have the correct drivers installed. I never thought that there should be that many controllers, but I've been wrong before.
Thanks in advance. -
I have 8 IDE channels as well.
1 Sata controller and 1 PCI controller so it looks like your installed drivers are correct. -
HP has released a new Bios for the dv5z, F.33
Enhancements :Adds support for the Boston Power Cell Battery Pack.
Adds Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)
thermal protection in Linux. -
Well, I've been running the Vista 64 bit SP2 RTM for about a week now and no major issues. CPU temp seems to have stayed the same. Does seem a bit zippier on the startup but nothing to go home and tell your mom about.
I also updated to the latest firmware, thank you Evolution, but I didn't think to look in the BIOS and see if there was anything new or changed. I am currently downloading the latest release of the HP Quick Launch Buttons for the dv5z; version 6.40.17.2
Description:
This package contains the software that enables the Quick Launch Buttons on the keyboard and the external Easy Access Buttons Keyboard to be programmed for the supported notebook/laptop models and operating systems. This application enables menu control of various bezel buttons, such as volume, internal/external display, and mute on/off; HotKeys; and Docked Events.
Enhancements:
Provides the latest version of the driver. -
Well it looks like Microsoft has released Vista SP2 to the general public now. I'm guessing that it will be available through Windows Update at first. I'm not finding the Service Pack on Microsoft's Download website.
If you do plan to install the service pack, be for warned, it took about an hour to update on my machine. The first 40 minutes you can still use your computer, but the last 20+ minutes it does the "Installing Service Pack Step 1 of 3 0%" screen.
Happy Updating! -
Hello, i dont want to interrupt your conversation but i need a little help. I'm looking to upgrade my processor (AMD turion x2 rm-72 2.1Ghz). I just dont know which are compatible or which processor would suit me best.
My problem is that ill have Runescape, iTunes and windows live messenger open and ill start to lag. My processor will be at 100% with about 87 processes running. Right now i have iTunes, Firfox and Windows Task Manager open with 83 processes and my processor is jumping from 87% to 100%.
If i were to upgrade my processor i would like one that was 2.3-2.4 ghz with a decent cache.
Any suggestions? I'm sure i forgot to include some information too. -
Also, i forgot to include that I had some overheating issues and i ended up having to send my laptop into hp to have the heatsink replaced. It still gets a little warm at times but core temp normally says its around 73-77 degrees when i am surfing the web.
I dont know if a faster processor would help because it wouldnt be maxed out at 100% all the time so it would stay at a lower voltage and run cooler. Or if it would make my laptop hotter because its using more power.
On a side note: I dont care about the processor helping battery life because im plugged in everywhere i go. -
Any of the current turion RM series or turion ultra ZM series processors will work on your dv5z (ps you should correct your sig the dv5t is the Intel model and the dv5z which you have is the AMD model). However if you upgrade your processor you will automatically void your warranty so if you still want to upgrade keep that in mind.
Your current rm-72 should be fine doing the task you listed without being maxed out all of the time. You said you have 83 processes running that number is very high; that tells me you probably have alot of the bloatware that HP ships still installed and running. Some of that bloatware is undoubtedly adding unnecessary extra cpu cycles and causing your processor to become maxed out. -
Thanks, is there a program or something i can get that will either end the unneeded process for me/ tell me which ones to end/ get rid of the bloatware?
-
Looks like HP has release another BIOS update for our beloved dv5z's:
Version F.34 Released 2009-05-25
Enhancements:
# Adds support for Microsoft Windows Vista Operating Systems with Service Pack 2(SP2).
# Adds support for future Microsoft Windows Operating Systems.
However I am online with their tech support so I can get mine fixed. I went to start the laptop this morning and all I get are blink diagnostic codes for a BIOS corruption failure :-(. Based on this link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...c=en&cc=uk&lang=en&rule=26781&product=3816592. We'll see what happens, luckily it still under warranty. -
Thanks for the Bios update info. Hope you get everything sorted with HP on that Bios issue.
To burkem3000 there is a software package called PC Decrapifier that can remove all unwanted and unnecessary software but I have never used so I cannot tell you much more about it. I have a clean vista installation and not the HP factory install so my install only contains what I need. -
I've been following this thread since it started and my warranty will be up in a couple months.. finally got sick of the overheating. I thought it was a design flaw with the heatsink being connected to the gpu / cpu / etc collectively so went the better part of a year dealing with air so hot it would burn my leg through pants and unexpected shutdowns.
TO anyone still having these issues with their dv5z; as well as possible performance issues ( mine would get to about 95c and undervolt many times per minute to stop itself from shutting down, which caused performance spikes, etc )
I finally tore the whole notebook apart down to the heatsink and took it off only to find the compound that HP had applied was very tacky.. almost "baked" the problem seemed to me that there was ten times as much thermal compound surrounding the processor die as on it.. and it was at a slightly higher level than the die, and very hard. I scraped it all out and found a tube of artic silver that was about 3 years old, applied it to the processor, replaced the thermal pads with it as well on other components, and put everything back together.
Long story short, I can now run my system @ full load without undervolting, and temps flatline at 85c, though that is extreme. I now IDLE at temps around 55c instead of close to 80. My case is extreme... but it may be worth a check for anyone that has had it with this issue (especially linux users... processor seems to scale, but not undervolt itself.
[edit]
If anyone goes about this business, do not replace the thermal pad on the northbridge with thermal compound. The result will be too thin causing stability problems that arise sporadically ( games, flash videos, ) the system will seem stable without intense activity. This is once again the poorly designed heatsink system at work, with the northbridge being slightly lower than the cpu / gpu on either side of it.
[/edit] -
I have my laptop back today and it seems to work like it did before. It came with F.23 BIOS loaded so I have updated to the latest BIOS F.34. Seems to work ok so far. I will reboot a couple more times once Windows updates finishes installing.
Mine runs really hot, about 88C, with the power options set to full performance. I usually run about four Firefox windows with about 10 tabs each, Boinc running SETI and my Avast AV. Running SETI cranks the CPU cores to 100% and doesn't let up. If I elevate the back of the laptop with a 1"x2" board it'll drop down to 83C. Seems to me someone didn't do their homework when they were designing the cooling system. Should have had the intake come from the top of the laptop instead of on the bottom where there is very little room to pull air in. @crache Does your laptop seem the hottest around the RAM? I know mine does, Yeouch! It gets to be a scorcher down there. -
Since I started using my Zalman NC1000 cooler the bottom of my dv5z doesn't even get warm anymore, cool air plus aluminum really helps to keep the temps under control
Glad to hear you got your notebook back from HP with no further issues.
Did HP tell you what was the cause of the problem? -
the RAM area is quite warm, and I've found the modules to be producing enough heat themselves. I read of another dv5z user who upgraded their 2gb or so HP supplied to a higher grade 4gb, and actually experienced a drop in temperature. @ about 50$ to upgrade myself to 4gb of ddr800 I might consider it since my 3gb HP provided me with is two different brands... does anyone know if dual channel works like it used to several years back?
As far as the cooler; a worthwhile tool.. my system was so hot that running a large fan aimed at the bottom wouldn't even help. I was stupid about it, got the AC motor too close and it wouldn't boot; had to take out the battery and do a power drain, holding the button.
