I installed Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on my Dv5z in a new partition so I can still boot to my original Vista 32-bit, Ubuntu and now Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I've got everything working under Windows 7 except for 3D DriveGuard which shows drive as not supported. Has anyone had any luck getting DriveGuard (formerly ProtectSmart) working on a Dv5z under Windows 7?
-
This is the driver you will need. It is the updated windows 7 driver for the dv5z.
-
-
That is the current driver I am using in windows 7, I have had no issues with it either. Make sure your bios is up-to-date the current version is F.37
-
Does anyone know if the latest BIOS supports a ZM-87 processor?
-
I get PXE-E61: Media Test Failure Check Cable, Error Message on my dv5 laptop. I have checked hard drive cable and I have disabled network boot in Bios. When I disable network in Bios it will enable when I restart the laptop. I have the boot order set to CD/DVD then Notebook Hard drive... last is network. The laptop will still boot into windows and work ok after the error times out but you have to wait each time you start the system. Anyone knows why? Thanks
-
Wow.. A lot of HP owners here... Maybe one of you can help me out.
I will try to make this as short as possible. HPdv5z-1000 (My wife's)
2 months ago laptop won't boot just blinking lights.
Replaced thermal pad with copper and Artic silver 5. Laptop works great.
Over the last few days the laptop periodically just beeps on startup. I fixed it by removing the cmos battery and the memory modules.
Tonight nothing works. Just beeps. I have tried different memory and a different battery and I don't know what else to do next.
I am thinking bad motherboard or corrupt bios? I don't know if a corrupt bios would actually keep it from even booting to the setup screen.
Any ideas? -
Try setting the HD to boot first -
Thanks but I have tried that and it still does not work.
I get this error and then it boots into windows.
For Realtek RTL8111B/8111C Gigabit Ethernet Controller 2.18
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
I do not know why Network boot rom re-enables it's self after I disable it and save in Bios. -
The cap and num lock lights are error codes one blink is processor two is bios and three is memory if I remember correctly. Everybody told me it was the motherboard. Turned out to be the processor mine was a QL-60 and it ran really hot. When I got the memory error, three beep or three blinks and I put one stick in the second memory slot I normally got a different error.
Hope this helps you. -
I can put one memory stick in slot 1 and it beeps. I can take the same memory stick and put it in slot 2 and the lights will blink but not beep.
Is that what happened? Did you fix it by replacing the CPU? -
Yes the same way.
I got a new motherboard and put my cpu in it and it gave me the same errors, then I changed the cpu and it worked. I don't know if this is the same thing happening to you but sounds very similar to me.

"Miner" from this site helped me with cpu selection, if yours has an QL you may want to upgrade to a RM or ZM.
As per Miner; "The dv5 series was sold with cpu's up to the Turion Ultra ZM-86. So any of the cpu's from the Athlon QL or Turion RM and ZM series should work. The RM or the ZM series would be better than the Athlon QL series. I would suggest a RM series since they wont cost too much and performance wise they are going to be very similar to the top of the line ZM series." -
also thanks all for your help. -
What is your current processor?
I got a ZM-84 for about $100 with shipping from an ebay seller, looking on ebay I did not see much difference in price between the RM's and ZM's.
In my case process of elimination made me buy the processor, in your case get a good chip and think of it as an upgrade. I don't know if my problem and yours are the same, I'm just sharing my experience with you and hoping it helps.

I got an Rm-70 $56.95 The cheapest ZM I could find was $89.00 and it was either scratched or cracked but in perfectly working condition.. lol

Done and Done. My problem was fixed with the new CPU.. Thank you all for you help!!!

I bought my first laptop ever on line from hp.com and it was the famous DV5Z and i was real proud of it till nine months into owning it it began to mess up , it started as some white lines horizontal on the screen and over time it progressed into the entire screen turning white at times but the problem will go away if i gave it a slight tap or even move the screen back and forth, so i called up hp and they told me that that problem was not covered under warranty and i needed to return it for a $$$ to much for me) sum of money to repair, well i then decided to invest in a screwdriver and open up my investment only to realize that the cable connected between the screen and the board was slack so i pulled it out and re connected it and never had that problem again. Now i jus need to figure out what to do about the excessive heat that caused me to replace 2 chargers already , i am now on my third , and the battery well i know now that the one that i bought 6 cell was not good enough
-
Just wanted to share an HP link to help people who need to crack open their DV5z laptop.
http://h20574.www2.hp.com/?jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN&lang=en&cc=US&hpappid=psml
Includes videos on every part. Well done. Helped me remove my fan/heat sink to apply new thermal grease (the factory did a horrible job). -
Just wondering has anyone pulled their DVD/Blu-ray drive and put in a second HDD? The optical drive has a SATA data connector and a Slimline SATA power connector. I would think if a Slimline to 15pin SATA power cable adapter could be found it might work. The optical drive says it needs 5V/1.5A so I dont think there would be a supply issue.

is it easy to apply artic silver 5 to the cpu? i'm comfortable taking apart desktops but haven't delved into laptops yet.

I'm new to the forum and was directed here by someone to see if anyone could remedy my problem i have a DV5 1008ca and everyday the laptop will over heat and cause my laptop to abruptly shut off, i have CPUID running and have taken heat measurements of the hard drive and cores, i have a Hitachi HTS543225L9A300 250gb which runs at 53° C, and I'm running an AMD Athlon X2 QL-60 which runs at about 93-97°C but when read from under the computer with a laser temperature meter it reads about 109°C. Wondering if there is something that i can do for the laptop or if this would be a recall on the laptop. Thanks Aaron

Hello. Can someone recommend a cooling pad for dv5z? There are so many choices and I have no clue which one would fit best. I don't need it to be top of the line, just something inexpensive ($20-30).
Much appreciated -
Any news of a recall or anything on this crappy model? Sigh... I get pissed everytime i use this laptop, the overheating is just terrible, i'm out of warranty, so i'm thinking of cutting this damn thing open and leaving a vent or something
-
i'm thinking about following this guide: Your Tear Down Guide By Mike Brady
and putting AS5 on the cpu. anyone seen this guide? seems accurate. -
I found the biggest difference was just fixing HPs crappy application of the CPU thermal compound. AS5 does make a difference, a few degrees on my DV5s, but the real advantage was the stabilization of temps. There were no more drastic fluctuations on temps or the steady inevitable climb into unreal temperatures.
They will still get hot, but it takes a lot less time to recover and much longer to get to the higher temperatures. -
I have a DVZ5-1000 laptop that like so many was overheating. I replaced the fan/heatsink and now it will not power on. The power button just flashes once and then nothing. I hear no sounds at all. I have checked all connections, reseated memory, HDD, performed the hard reset, etc. So I put the original fan/heatsink back in and same thing, but after several attempts I was able to power it on by the remote and then power button 4 times. So I decided to put the new fan/heatsink back in and again will not power on either by remote or button.
AC adapter is good (LED is lit) and so is the battery. It was running fine, rebooted with no problem before replacing the fan/heatsink.
There is no sign that the MB is damaged, no burning, all ribbons look good. Do you think its a bad power button or MB? -
Did you every find out the instructions for dissambling the dv5z? i have a dv5z where i need to replace the broken lcd screen, but cant find instructions. -
Followed the guide and applied a nice thin layer of thermal compound to the cpu. It DEFINITLEY made a difference. It would get hot and then shut down on me after a while, not it still gets hot, but it hasn't shut down!! The tear down guide is a godsend!!! =) -
I have been dealing with the Overheating ever since the day I got my dv5z-1000 (Xmas 2008) but a few days ago my screen just stopped working. I can still run the laptop if I plug it into a new monitor so I am assuming if I buy a new screen and put it in it will work right?
I don't know if my resolution was 1280x800 or 1680x1050 both are available for this will it make a difference to get the higher resolution if I had the lower? Like any downside?
While I have it torn apart I was thinking about doing some upgrades that Will REALLY help first off I have the lowest processer available for this machine. The AMD Athlon X2 QL-60 1.9GHz. I was looking and apparently I can just drop in a Turion X2 Ultra ZM-86 2.4GHz. Now will it just drop in plug and play? The last time I worked on the internals of a computer was a 386i about 15yrs ago. Other than buying the chip for about $150 what will I need to do to drop it in and have it work?
Lastly I would REALLY like to go with a solid state hard drive. I am not sure how to go about that one is this system compatible with one? Can someone point me in the right direction to go about this? -
My guess is:
If you upgrade to a higher resolution screen you should not have any problems adjustion your display to match this. Make sure that the size, fit, is correct. The same with the SSHD as long as the connector/adaptor is SATA and you clone your OS you should be good.
The backlight on your screen maybe gone or the screen inverter. -
I have a dv5z-1000, purchased in 2008. Right at the end of 2010, on Dec 29, it began to blink once every 5 seconds. I followed all the advice to reset it, removing the battery, resetting memory cards, pressing the power button without power, letting it rest overnight..and got it to run one more day. Since that day, it went back to blinking no matter what. I've concluded the CPU is damaged by heat, as overheating was an issue, as it is for everyone here. My question to you all in this forum: Can the Athlon AMD x2 CPU be replaced? I found them for as low as $45, for example:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz 2x512KB Socket AM2 Dual-Core CPU ADO5000IAA5DO
Has anyone done this or had a tech do it? Thanks for any input you may have.
By the way, how can I search all 134 pages of this owners' lounge? Thanks in advance. -

The dv5 motherboard uses a socket S1g2 you need to replace it with a RM or ZM series Turion or the Athlon QL series processors. -
I believe I have only one blink, though it repeats infinitely every 5 seconds.
It corresponds to:
1 Blinking, Caps Lock/Num Lock; CPU, CPU not functional
So, I am inferring from that blink code that it must be a bad CPU.
Thanks for the tips on which CPU to buy.
I wonder if it is worth risking the $45. I have a place that can do the labor for about $60. It would be a bummer if the system board or GPU were also bad. I don't want to spend more than half of the original $700 on repairs. But it would be such a pity to just dump this great laptop in the garbage! I suppose I could try to sell it for the good parts. The screen is still fine.
Have you ever replaced your CPU? Or have you read of anyone in this forum who has done so? I haven't gotten through all 134 pages yet. -
I replaced my QL60 with a ZM-84 for about $100 with shipping from an ebay seller this is about a year ago, been working great.

Hey guys,
I have been using hp dv5z for more than 2 years now and obviously it started frying up so i decided to clean the fan and put some thermal paste. Although the temps have dropped but i m still thinkin of investing in a decent cooler. Can anyone suggest me any coolers that actually work well and are not waste of money. Thanks -
Where do I belong? I have a dv5-1160us
